    Yes I totally agree with you. CDs are cheaper than vinyls and much prefer the CDs over vinyl. The CDs are much easier to store and then vinyl. However, what the companies need to do is to release the harder to find albums, all kinds of music to CDs albums that are hard to find and out of print. I have hundreds of CDs. I put them in alphabetical order so that I can find them. Great video thanks

      Most stuff was issued on cd but went out of print. When there's a format war (between records and cds), fewer titles are pressed and the consumer doesn't win. Back in the 90's, Fantasy used to reissue without street dates or much fanfare. Ho-hum! We're getting another Stax box. Fans actually criticized them for issuing John Coltrane's complete Prestige catalog in box set form a second time. Was viewed as a money grab! Concord bought the entire Fantasy catalog which included Stax, Prestige, Contemporary, Pablo, Riverside, among others. When you order a new cd today, Concord will most likely send you a cd-r. Craft is their boutique reissue label and it's full of vinyl, bloat, and a ton of hype. Twenty years ago I got tired seeing those 20th Century Millennium collections and reissues with just one bonus track. They're a sight for soar eyes in 2022.

      I agree. Cd's sound way better than streaming and better than lp's in many (not all) ways. You can hear so much more detail with a cd. LP's seem so antiquated, large and fragile. Anyway, I have about 5000 cd's and 2500 lp's. I don't buy lp's anymore as they take up too much space and are way too expensive these days but still buy new and used cd's. So many more titles are available on cd than lp as well.

    I've been collecting music for over 50 years. I never got rid of my vinyl collection or off loaded my CDs. Why on earth would I? I've never understood the "all in or all out' mind set. I'm happy to live in a multi format eco system- there are pro's and con's for every format including streaming. I did stop buying new vinyl over 25 years ago but I've never stopped buying CDs. I turn 62 next year and despite embracing streaming I am buying as many CDs as I ever did. The extortionate prices for new vinyl is basically a scam that's milking the collectors for their last penny. The same happened when CDs first launched - record companies plundered their vast back catalogues and hiked prices on the new format as folks made the transition- so many offloaded their vinyl for next to nothing and now they are rebuilding their collections... Many of those same people did the same when streaming became "cool" selling off their CD collections and scoffing at the uncool fogeys who were still buying and listening to CDs... The more things change the more they stay the same.

      Great comment indeed! It seems many people just follow the trends. I have never understood it. I love the both CD and vinyl. Bought a lot of vinyl back in late 90s until 2018 or so when they were at first cheap and then reasonable priced, not anymore. Now it is time for the CD again. But the sought after CDs have been expensive for a decades too, but not that expensive as the trendy vinyl today. But we can say the CD is at the stage the vinyl was back in 2012/2013, Judas Priest/Iron Maiden CD cost now about 3-10 which was the price of its vinyl counterpart back then and common albums by Doors or Rolling Stones are still like 3-6 on CD.

    I'm 74 and I was part of the 1960's counterculture (a freak, not a hippy) and aside from the cultural importance of the 60's music, vinyl records were the main source of entertainment at that time. I didn't have enough money back then to afford a good sound system for vinyl, so when CD's came out it was an opportunity for me to hear music clearer than I've ever been able to hear it. Today, I can finally afford a decent turntable, amp and speakers, so I've been collecting vinyl again.
    Subjective as it may be, I like the sound of vinyl, its not better or worse, just different than hearing music digitally. I still have quite a few CD's with a growing record collection and I listen to both. But there is a nostalgic aspect to vinyl, the process of playing a record, reading the liner notes and marveling at the jacket's artwork make the listening experience more immersive and it does remind me of my youth. I find the extra effort needed to play vinyl has its own, unique rewards. I'm glad that vinyl is having a resurgence and that younger generations are experiencing the same things that I and many from earlier generations experienced when playing vinyl albums.
    I think the popularity of vinyl is here to stay as are CD's and streaming, one format no longer has to suffer greatly because another exists. CD players in cars and portable CD players are no longer necessary with the availability of streaming. With that, a significant reason for buying CD's no longer exists, this alone will prevent them from becoming "a big thing again". Vinyl has its place and its in the home, which is also the case now with CD's. Once someone invests in a sound system for vinyl and starts to feel more engaged with the process, they'll continue. CD's will continue to be sold and used but unlike in the 80's, 90's and early 00's, they now have competition from vinyl and streaming. I think that all three formats will be popular for a long time but its unlikely one will knock the other out of the market place in a similar way that CD's did to vinyl after their introduction. Each format has a place in our lives, streaming is convenient, CD's don't require much care and offer good fidelity, vinyl rewards the extra effort with tactile engagement, a unique auditory experience, visual pleasures and nostalgia.

    • @DigbyOdel-et3xx
      @DigbyOdel-et3xx ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Any audio issues people had with cd sound was all to do with poor mastering and production of the music, not the CD nor the Redbook formula.
      If one truly learns to understand how digital audio works and of course 16 bit 44.1k sampling of the CD will note that it's completely transparent to the original master recording.
      Bad sounding CD = bad or incompetent music mastering.🤔

    I’ve been a music collector for 55yrs+. Bought them in their various formats, some only available on a specific type. Counterculture aesthetics is what’s driven the resurgence of vinyl. CDs have twice the fidelity, quiet & are convenient to use, durable, don’t warp, not affected by dust. Audiophile vinyl doesn’t exist, it’s only remastered. Vinyl appeals to those who tinker; wow/flutter/rumble, tonearm type/material, cartridge type/stylus/material, etc. All in hopes of finding a good combination, albeit that tracking surface noise exists!🙈. CDs have advanced HiFi measurably. And DACs satisfy those who dislike “digital sound”. Sadly, streamers are left with nothing except subscription fees, no pride of media ownership🎶😎.

    Another thing people fail to mention, is that you can back them up on a computer. If your computer doesn't have an optical drive you can get an external USB version for around $20 to $25. In addition to backup you can rip the disc as flac files and transfer the music to your phone or digital music player. Not to mention local music stored on your phone or digital music player sounds better than streaming.

    The cds I buy are mostly $10-20 each even used. The nominal 90's-00's cds that you showed will always be bargain bin as are Carpenters and Air Supply records. I don't see cds that charted in Billboard's the Top 100 taking off as there are just too many and people aren't into a lot of that. What will and has increased in price are deluxe editions like those done for the group Bad Company, box sets, indie releases, cd singles with unique mixes, third party licensed music like those issued by Wounded Bird, Sundazed, or Hipo-select, and imports especially in the older music that wasn't in it's heyday issued on cd. Rock Candy, Bear Family, Cherry Pop, Japanese pressings all lead the way. The 50's-early 60's pop, rock, and doo-wop isn't going to make much of a comeback with few exceptions as most who remember those styles as a current have sadly past or are very old. The standard classic rock/soul cd may hold their value but there was a moderate amount pressed. After music goes out of print, you have the 90/10 rule where 90% falls below retail price. After all, said title isn't selling and that's usually the reason why items are cut-out. A good 10% will increase with some going exponentially but interest in the artist after their initial peak has to obviously follow which is the biggest key compenent.
    I wasn't impressed with your titles like Rod Stewart and re-recordings of the Platters and Drifters. The titles on the wall behind you mostly sold in the millions but my money would be on Jeffrey Osborne. His albums with LTD haven't been in print in awhile. Osborne also issued a second companion volume to Ultimate collection called More of my best. A ballad collection followed in 2001 and mopped up the rest but these were pressed in far fewer numbers. He also had an album called "Don't stop" that was quite underrated and was subsequently cut out rather quickly on cd in the mid 80's. It normally is in the $15 dollar range propelled by the hit "Crazy 'bout cha" which was a Quiet Storm favorite and later put on Ballads. LTD also did an album without him called Love Magic that was only issued on cd in Japan. Enchantment and T-Connection are other groups that weren't anthologized early in the cd era. Domestic discs are long out of print and full catalog got limited issue in England. Just some insight.

    • @thehighllama8101
      @thehighllama8101 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly. For example, last year I bought an out-of-print CD of the Cowsills' 1968 album, Captain Sad and His Ship of Fools (on the British Now Sounds label, which apparently released more obscure and overlooked albums of the 60s and 70s), and it was $50. Look on e-bay now, and you'll see prices of $80+. More recently, I boought David Bowie's Aladdin Sane 30th Anniversary 2cd Deluxe Edition, as well as Matthew Wilder's I Don't Speak the Language (1980s album with the one-hit wonder, Break My Stride, on the Collectables label). The CDs cost about $50 and $60 respectively. Basically, I bought all the very popular and mainstream releases back in the 80s, 90s, and 2000s. Now I'm focused on finding more obscure or less popular albums on CD that were released on smaller, independent labels, or special editions of albums that I didn't purchase at the time they were released. Like, right now, I'm looking to buy the deluxe box set of the Kinks' Arthur album, which is a 4 CD set, and it can go for hundreds of dollars, since it's rare and out of print. Basically, when it comes to the rare or more obscure stuff, buying CDs ain't cheap.

    • @DorianPaige00
      @DorianPaige00 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thehighllama8101 If you get into viewing or buying other's collections, you'll find some of that stuff especially if they bought mail order (remember that), Tower records, genre focused store, or did special orders. There's solid collections out there with Japanese pressings of obscure and famous groups. The earlier Collectables discs are easy to find but a little tougher on the ears. When Collectables started issuing twofers, the majors got involved in the mastering process and things improved but they weren't over-pressed. Around this time, they issued twofers on Slave and Cheryl Lynn and I rarely saw them stores. Maybe Tower and Sound of Market/Jazz Sound in Philadelphia had them. Sound of Market was really the only physical store that really catered to my taste. Within a week of going there, I dropped $10K and they were fairly priced. I had a bag of about 200 cds from the R&B section and I only completed S-Z in reverse order. I wasn't as excited about what I got as I was worried about what was left behind. Today if a cd is sealed, you better open up because there might be a dreaded cd-r lurking in there. That's another issue that is totally ruining collecting.

    As much as I'd like to see a full-blown CD resurgence like you describe, I don't see them ever overtaking vinyl again like they did 35 years ago. They might (and I hope they do) continue to modestly increase in popularity like they did last year, though. However, having said that, vinyl prices cannot continue rising like they have been or they'll run the risk of pricing themselves out of business. I hope the record company execs are smart enough to realize that.

      Only time will tell… to the serious record collector they will not. I thinking more of a new trend.
      This recent surge in vinyl is mainly nostalgia from the previous vinyl owners and the younger population who never experienced owning records and think it’s cool. I’m saying that will be the next driving force in the CD trend. Will CDs overtake vinyl in value I doubt it vinyl has way more history so the CDs that will increase in value will be the box sets the limited presses, etc.

      I think that they will overtake lp's in the long run. LP's are such an expensive, antiquated, fragile, large, cumbersome, etc format. I have 2500 lp's and they take up a ton of space. With hi-res streaming available, CDs will never gain their previous popularity. For $20 a month I can stream in rates far higher than any standard CD and listen to it anywhere in decent sound. And if you want physical media, CDs will never offer more than LPs. CDs really sit I between streaming and LPs. It's like an inverse bell curve. But for real, for those liking CDs, our local Goodwills have them by the 100s at 1$ a piece. Go buy them by the armfuls! If anyone says that they can, it is almost certainly the placebo effect. Plus, if you don't have the physical media, you are renting the music and are at the mercy of the corporate streaming lords. If there is a copyright dispute, any dispute with the artist or if they decide that they don't want songs like Catholic Girls, Not Now John, Walk On The Wild Side, The End, Jewish Princess, Some Girls, Revolution Blues, Brown Sugar, Georgia, Into The Night, Everyone's Gone To The Movies, Turning Japanese, etc, they may well get pulled or censored. Most music lovers don't want to rent, they want to own their music and only two formats exist today where almost all titles are available, LP and CD. I think the cd is by far the most practical thing in today’s world than vinyl. The cd is smaller, more portable, and are recordable unlike vinyl. I’d like to see the cd come back for reasons mentioned earlier. Digital remastering causes distortion in the sound giving them that metallic sound. AAD CD’s sound much better than digitally remastered CD’s. Cd’s don’t wear with playing like vinyl. I feel that AAD CD’s with improvements would be closer to vinyl sound than digitally mastered analog CD’s would be. CD’s compared to vinyl is like cassette tapes to reel to reel sound wise. My thoughts exactly! I started collecting cds at the beginning of the covid pandemic and i sure am glad i did! i've amassed about 600 awesome cd's for mostly a dollar. Some i've paid 3 to 8 bucks for at my local records shops but they were usually 2 or 3 cd sets. I am so glad I started collecting them, i would have probably originally spent about ten grand give or take had i bought them new. That being said i have occasionally bought brand new just released current music but that's ok. And I bought a good quality digital audio player so I can take music with me in digital un comprssed files. And it's also blue tooth. Although i mostly enjoy popping in the cd into my player in my man cave over some coffee or bourbon depending on the time of day haha. Cheers from Houston! Class of 96 and an 80's kid...

      I'm particulalry going crazy with complete opera CDs. They were always difficult for me to afford new because it would be $40-50 for three CDs with a huge libretto booklet. Of course, condition is everything, but I can now get them with minimal shelf wear, sometimes even sealed, for $2-10. Collection is all over the map because of what I can find in acceptable condition. I have Rossini's Il Viaggio del Rheims and L'Italiana in Algeire but not Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Smetana's Libuse but not The Bartered Bride, and Mascagni's L'Amico Fritz but not Cavelleria Rusticana except for burned copy I was given when I was in it to help me learn the part (which was chorus, so it wasn't that helpful).

    They’re great if you’ve got storage to keep them. Can quickly overwhelm a living room/listening room. I like to keep most in storage and a few favourites out ready to play and circulate them every once in a while.
    Not sure that CDs will ever have a Vinyl like comeback though as they don’t have the same kind of analog appeal. They’re digital just like streaming but without all the convenience. CDs appeal rests with audiophiles who think they sound better than streaming. Doubt there’s enough of them to really make a difference.
    Edit: Just realised that CD sales are no longer in decline in the US and are significantly outselling vinyl. So who knows maybe your right. I guess if artists stop distributing ALL their music via the likes of Spotify it might help. There’s a lot of good stuff not on the streaming services so there’s still an incentive to buy physical albums.

I do not buy mainstream albums in the first, as I am into jazz and improv and other Avantgarde genres, and here some some CDs can be very expensive if hard to find. I also buy classical and have bought 40 classical CD`s in a thrift store once for a fiver or six dollars.

    Dude, you struck a chord with me on this one. I was listening to exclusively vinyl up until about 2020 when records just started getting way too expensive. I HAPPENED to come across an 80s Sony CD player at Goodwill and I bought it based on the reviews I quickly discovered on my phone. I guess I was expecting it to sound maybe 75-80% as good as my vinyl setup. Needless to say, it sounded awesome. The first album I played was an AM+ copy of Styx - Grand Illusion that I bought at a used book/music store for $.25. Since then I have been buying tons of CDs mostly in the $1-$3 range. I'd say at this point my CD collection is probably about the same size as my vinyl collection. I agree with you that CDs are still way undervalued/underrated, but I have seen prices creeping up a bit in the past year or two. CDs are an awesome medium that a lot of people are sleeping on but shouldn't be. Enjoyed your video!

    I think CD's are making a comeback partially due to a renewed nostalgic interest in everything 1980's as well as the steep prices of records being released either as new albums or as reissues of past albums which only encourages music collectors, particularly young collectors, to consider buying CD's instead as a more affordable alternative.

      I believe or atleast hope the market will be "normalized" when the vinyl trend will crash. At the same time people will realize the CD is still the easiest and best sounding format to listen physical music (I love the vinyl too but thats a fact). I'm not too happy if there will be another trend with the CD's. It means stupid hype and insane prices which has very little to do with the dedicated 2nd hand collectors market. Also there is so much different CD editions of same album, it will be a huge mess if there will be "every CD is worth of gold" attitude because a tiny IFPI code can separate a CD worth of 0,50 and 50.

    I was 19 when the CD player came out in 83 and what the young folks today don’t seem to grasp is that CD’s are a “stand alone” media which is not dependent on the internet or an MP3 storage device to store for long periods. The CD is a MUCH higher quality sound in comparison to downloaded music but young people don’t know that there’s something much better out there. As for albums, basically the same thing as the CD’s but you’ll need quality equipment to bring out the quality of the album. Albums are susceptible to heat and moisture so proper storage is important and for Gods sake, keep the albums vertical and straight, don’t put a lot of weight on them where they’ll warp.

    I collect cds and I have a lot of them and I will continue to buy them. I also buy albums and recently have been growing my collection. I even have 800 cassette tapes in 8 Napa Valley holders. Cd sales have already increased 47% over last year and albums sales also increased. I believe both the cds and albums can co exist together. I also know albums are trendy for a large portions of buyers and expect sales of albums will slow down and level out. People are still buying cassettes and some music groups have been releasing cassettes for sale. Although I have never owned a reel to reel I do have a working 8 track player on my home stereo. Like albums and cds I believe the streaming of music can stay viable just like my satellite stereo in my car. The point is I hope the record business keep making cds and albums. What I really would like is new cars have an option for Bluetooth, Satellite Radio, Streaming, a hook up for an Ipod with a cassette player and a cd player and RCA hook up for amps. I am the person who would pay more for a car with a stereo like that, and I believe I am not the only one. Prices of Albums will come down slowly and I hope people trade in their record and cd collection. I will be there to get the deals and enjoy my hobby of collecting music. I really love technology but there is nothing like touching a product like a cassette, cd and albums,. You get the artwork and extras that technology can't deliver with the formats. I was against people downloading music for free I want to make it viable for an artist to make a living, and the consumers to afford collecting. I am considering getting a reel to reel after I get a tube amp, a preamp, amp and equalizer for my home stereo. I almost have my speaker set up on my home hi-fi. Bottom line keep making cds and albums, get more record plants that can produce what ever the customer buys. We really need the independent record stores to thrive and realize we need the experience thumbing through music at a store. We still can shop on the internet and we need to learn from our mistakes. A lot of people got rid of their albums, cassettes and cds I know I did. I am holding on to my music and not getting rid of anything again. I wish I had all my albums I gave away. If anyone wants to get rid of their compact disc's you can donate them to me.

I will buy the vinyl version of albums released by newer artist so I do both vinyl and CDs. Well, I grow up in the mid 90's too and I tell you the 2nd hand vinyl selection was large and cheap as chips. I mean you could pick up 1st pressing Black Sabbath and KISS records for 0,50cent all the day and even the new vinyl was cheaper than the CD counterpart. Thats why many of people got into vinyl back then and build the foundation for the upcoming "vinyl revival", later "vinyl trend". If you liked old metal or rock, it was like a paradise because instead of nowadays very common Evanescence or Nightwish CD it was Black Sabbath or Anthrax LP for example.

    Hello I'm in my sixties, and I have a large collection of cds. All genres, with a huge quantity of Jazz. I like my cds, and play them alot. I clean them with a solution called Isopropyl Alcohol. This solution is what was used back in the 1980s when cds came out. I have the soundtrack to my life on cd. From the sixties to the early 2000s. I'm not so much into anything too contemporary. I live in New Zealand and some stores that sold new cds don't now. I get alot from charity stores.

    I have CDs and I have Vinyl and prefer vinyl. I don't see liquidation of vinyl stock, but please tell me where you do. Walmart's $15 record sale was pretty busy. Those prices were pretty good, considering in the 70s an album was $6 and a double album was around $10, that's a decent price. I have almost 3000 LPs and probably 1000 or more CDs. I'd never buy a new CD, but I would and have bought used. At 50 cents a pop I'd be foolish not to. Now is there going to be a resurgence of CDs overtaking streaming and vinyl, I doubt it very much. Just a feeling I have. Vinyl lasted tooooooo long for it not to come around as relevant again and I'm sure glad it did. Besides even cd players fell apart and are harder to bring back to life than 60 year old turntables.

    • @rudyonduty
      @rudyonduty  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m not sure how old you are but if you do a little research, there were big chains of record stores all through the 60s,70s, 80s and into the early 90s, not just a section in Target or Walmart… Tower Records, Sam goody & Licorice pizza just to name few. Your serious vinyl collector will always be. To all those people scooping them up at Walmart for 15 bucks it’s just a fad for most of them. As far as CD Players go… new turntables came along with the resurgence of vinyl and so will CD players as soon as there is an Oporto make money comes along. In closing, you think Walmart would be selling $30 albums for 15 bucks if they didn’t have a reason to? Follow the signs.
      Thanks for watching. And thanks for your post!

    Where i live there is a charity ( thrift) shop selling CD's for 50P (about 60 cents?) they have an enormous amount in there, and at that price you could build a really good collection fairly quickly. I also like all kinds of music so such a place is an aladins cave. I will not buy vinyl, simply because you have to be fairly rich to indulge and i have to budget. I like CDs they sound better, i just don't buy that nonsense that vinyl has superior sound quality. Buy these gems when you can, a bagfull for little money.

    One thing you forgot about CDs have full album art. I never stopped collecting CDs. I been collecting since I was 14 and I'm 45 now. I still buy them from shows and online. I have close to 3,500 CDs and growing. I collect all kinds of media movies, video games and music. My game collection is the most value but my CDs are close behind. To speak the truth if I lost my CDs I would be devastated but my movies and games it would suck but I could handle it.
    Some CDs are extremely expensive. Like old video game soundtrack also a lot of movie soundtracks because they were low pressed. If you ever buy to resell old first pressing of black metal and Death Metal sell for a pretty penny. Again very low pressing on a lot of them.

      But where you can find 1st/early press black/death metal CDs under 20$€£ today is a question. Those CDs was never a big thing in the flea market bins. About 5-10 years ago there was better 2nd hand market for those items, not anymore. Like I said, the CD market is like vinyl market was back in 2012 or so, with a good luck you can still find those early "extreme metal" CDs for a reasonable prices and the availability is generally much better than their vinyl counterparts. But finding them for cheap is almost impossible, even the 80's Iron Maiden CDs command 15-30$€ online today, they were 5 buck CDs just a couple years ago, but with a good luck you can still find those for cheaper (For example some months ago I bought 1st Bathory CD 1991 for 10€, 1st press of Mayhem's Deathcrush without barcode for 15€, talking about bargain! It is just like you could score a 1993 pressing of Deathrush on vinyl for 50€ back in 2012) Same cannot say for their vinyl counterparts today. People who see that thing now are blessed, because many "extreme metal" (I hate that term) fan is too obsessed with the vinyl at the moment to understand the beauty of CDs and I think it is same on the every music style at the moment. I dont have see rare CD soundtracks on the wild much. But yeah, 2nd hand CD market is still very fine overall because the joy of hunting is still alive.

    I go to the Goodwill store all the time mostly on Wednesday's because now that I'm 55 I get a senior discount of 25% off. They sell their CD's for a $1 so I only pay .75 cents. Some days I only find 1 or 2 other days I walk out with 15 or more. My biggest problem is that I have hundreds of CD's and finding stuff I don't already own is a challenge.
