I tear up every time i hear Tim Minchin sing this song. When he gets to his daughter, it chokes me up every time and i don't even have children of my own. Didn't think someone else singing this would do that to me but I'm blinking tears out as I type this. That was very sweet. It's arguably the most beautiful song Minchin has ever penned, sung by a beautiful lady. Nicely done.
I'm right there with you tears and all. I do have a daughter and a granddaughter as well. It gets me because I can't be with my brother and Dad at Christmas drinking beer on the back deck as they both passed away.
My favourite Christmas song. That section of the song gets me too. Sublime when an artist communicates meaning through ordinariness: way more than the sum of its parts, which are all great parts. Makes me miss my family so much more than traditional Christmas music. Merry Christmas mate.
The "you'll be handed round the room like a puppy in a primary school" line gets me every damned time, and makes me awfully sad that my family is awful and my children don't get to experience that.
Same... Not all of my family is awful, but part of it is, and it hurts me to hear beautiful songs like this knowing that I'll never quite be able to enjoy a Christmas like this again. Lucky for me I have amazing friends and a fantastic sister, and we'll stick together no matter what.
The first time I heard this song I was visiting Sydney and attending a rehearsal of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Choir. They had me sit up front next to the director and it was sung so well and in such a heartfelt way that I cried. It was a beautiful moment and since then it’s been a favorite song of mine.
Beautiful, and gives me goosebumps, but I do agree that Tim's is really heartfelt, plus in the dvd he looks like he's about to cry.... I do really love this version though. The guitar is awesome too.
Such an incredibly powerful voice and Kate’s apparent effortlessness reminds me of the brilliant Linda Ronstadt from the ‘60s and ‘70s, even though their ‘styles’ are different. Kate’s voice is so musically seductive it didn’t even matter that the video lip-synch was up the spout.
this made me cry.I have been fighting for my daughter 2 return 2 me due 2 a sour relationship which i was strong enough 2 finally leave. The words 2 ur song resignate with me so much.I missed christmas,2 easters and her bday. But me and her family will continue 2 wait and hope that she will be safe when she returns.
Beautiful, really beautiful. I must have heard this song from Tim Minchin 30 times and only managed to make it without shedding tears on 5 occasions. Your version provoked the exact same reaction.
How can a voice be that pure? Tim's song as Mary Hopkin might have sung it fifty years ago. A combination that couldn't be done without time travel. So lovely in every way, thank you: have a joyous holiday season with family this Christmas.
I'm just so "chuffed", as you guys say down here. I'm a huge Minchin fan, but from what I gather Kate is a massive Aussie pop star, so anything of Tim's that she does expands his influence 10x...plus, you know, her voice is absolutely beautiful.
I got Kate's dvd of her Live in San Francisco and this is on the bonus features part. Holy shit, nearly brought me to tears with how beautiful this is.
KM-H is in my top 5 best female voices in Australia, along with Tina Arena, Kate Ceberano, Vanessa Amorosi and Vika Bull - sublime. I rememebr first seeing her singing 'Psycho Killer' at the end of an episode of 'Spicks and Specks' years ago - completely gobsmacked.
I'm glad that some people get to know this songs thanks to you guys when maybe they'd never have otherwise. It's a beatifull song that should be spread by any mean possible, and if it's in a respectfull and sincere way as this one, better. There's a lot of stuff on the internet and maybe you don't ever get to cross path with Tim's work. But with the help of this type of homages the task might become a little bit easier. And if the message gets through easier this way, for people that like this version more, great. What matters is the message. Choose your favorite messanger.
Australian atheist Christmas carol. The best Christmas song written. A good response to the religious who ask atheists "what do you people do at Christmas?"
Wow! This song, and especially this version, has just given "Christmas" a sense I knew I felt but just couldn't put in words without alienating all those that still think "it's about Jesus..." Beautiful!!!
Would love to get a chart of those guitar chords and voicings with the capo on 3rd(?)... can anyone help? I'm having trouble transcribing the piano chords to guitar...
I really like Christmas It's sentimental, I know, but I just really like it I am hardly religious I'd rather break bread with Dawkins than Desmond Tutu To be honest And yes, I have all of the usual objections To consumerism, the commercialisation of an ancient religion To the westernisation of a dead Palestinian Press-ganged into selling Playstations and beer But I still really like it I'm looking forward to Christmas Though I'm not expecting a visit from Jesus I'll be seeing my dad My brother and sisters, my gran and my mum They'll be drinking white wine in the sun I don't go in for ancient wisdom I don't believe just 'cause ideas are tenacious it means they're worthy I get freaked out by churches Some of the hymns that they sing have nice chords But the lyrics are dodgy And yes, I have all of the usual objections To the mis-education of children who, in tax-exempt institutions Are taught to externalise blame And to feel ashamed and to judge things as plain right and wrong But I quite like the songs I'm not expecting big presents The old combination of socks, jocks and chocolate's is just fine by me 'Cause I'll be seeing my dad My brother and sisters, my gran and my mum They'll be drinking white wine in the sun I'll be seeing my dad My brother and sisters, my gran and my mum They'll be drinking white wine in the sun And you, my baby girl My jetlagged infant daughter You'll be handed round the room Like a puppy at a primary school And you won't understand But you will learn someday That wherever you are and whatever you face These are the people who'll make you feel safe in this world My sweet blue-eyed girl And if my baby girl When you're twenty-one or thirty-one And Christmas comes around And you find yourself nine thousand miles from home You'll know what ever comes Your brothers and sisters and me and your mum Will be waiting for you in the sun When Christmas comes Your brothers and sisters, your aunts and your uncles Your grandparents, cousins and me and your mum We'll be waiting for you in the sun Drinking white wine in the sun Darling, whenever you come We'll be waiting for you in the sun Drinking white wine in the sun Waiting for you in the sun Darling, when Christmas comes We'll be waiting for you in the sun Waiting I really like Christmas It's sentimental, I know
I'm wondering why she left out the lines that lead up to the refrain change at the end. After "and you won't understand, but you will learn someday that wherever you are and whatever you face, these are the people who make you feel safe in this world. My sweet blue-eyed girl." comes "And if my baby girl when you're 21 or 31 and Christmas comes around and you find yourself 9000 miles from home you'll know whatever comes..", but she only sings the last few words which is odd for me, because this is the part why the refrain changes. Good cover though.
lol when I heard "I get freaked out by churches , Some of the hymns that they sing have nice chords but the lyrics are dodgy", I laughed out loudly. I can relate to that lol. I once visited a Catholic Church and was freaked out because of the Catholic Mass.
This is great, but Tim's version is so much more heartfelt by virtue of the fact that the views and the words are SO personal to him. Beautifully sang though.
Am I the only to think that this is a bit tongue in cheek? I mean she sings the song beautifully but I can't help thinking the whole thing looks and sounds a bit too "goody two shoes", in contrast to the words which are sharp and provocative in places (...westernisation of a dead Palestinian - Press-ganged into selling Playstations and beer...), as if to trick people into listening to a protest song thinking that it's a nice Christmas song. And the thing is, it's the most beautiful Christmas song I've ever heard! So, thumbs up all the way.
If anything, a straight-faced or "goody two-shoes" delivery of scathing criticism is perfect, when you consider the overall message of the song. She isn't trying to be comedic -- at any point -- so any jumps to bitterness or snarkiness would just be disruptive, honestly. She performs it the way she feels it. If she had mirrored Tim, she would be a simple hack (and this is KMH we're talking about, here!).
Yeah I thought the same thing. Realistically it's impossible to cover Tim Minchin unless you're not only musically talented, but have the wit/charisma to pull it off. I guess, ultimately, the song is musically beautiful on its own - these guys are celebrating that. Unfortunately it just comes off a bit 'weird' that they don't fit at all with the humour.
+Francois Lacherez No it is a little tongue in cheek i guess, not really sung in the spirit of the song but it sounds great fuck'n lip syncing is annoying but i like it myself
Sweety, honey, baby, love, it's called dubbing. Lip synching is what hack performers do when they can't perform music live. Please don't mix them up. Kate is a first class performer. If the dubbing bugs you, I suggest you stick to music without video and/or go to live performances only.
OK, then I revise my second sentence to, " And it's really annoying how poorly the dubbing was done." Fact remains that the movement of her lips in the video is badly out of sync with the audio track. And no need to avoid music videos as this is usually handled well enough not to be noticeable.
You take Christ out of Christmas and you will lose the magic of Christmas, and I mean that seriously the celebration will just become banal. Why the elevation of family in the song?
If you want to hear Tim's original version, go listen to Tim's original version. Kate's take is more melodic and restrained, and I think she nailed it.
When I listen to this I like to imagine this is Tim's daughter singing a cover for him a couple of decades later :)
God that made me cry...
That is one lovely sentiment.
me too, as soon as I saw the comment...
Oh my goodness that gave me the gooseys all over!
that would be so lovely ,i do hope this will be a thing that happen one day

Life must be hard for those whose can write criticizing comments about a beautiful version of a beautiful song. Thanks for the cover, Kate.
Or, and just hear me out on this, they have different taste to you and are perfectly happy. Just an idea.
@@pipmcsqueeza1017 Nah, they're just grinches!
I just love this Tim Minchin classic. Kate more than does it justice. Brings tears to my eyes. Just beautiful

A truly beautiful version of one of the world's best songs. Thank you Kate (and Tim)
This is the closest thing to an australian christmas carol i think there is.
+Pip McSqueeza nice try no dice
+Pip McSqueeza I prefer to listen to songs that weren't written by rapists.
white wine in the sun is the perfect Christmas song :)
+Pip McSqueeza agree to disagree then
I really want to know what Pip McSqueeza said to tick everyone off.
@@Guy1ncognito something about rolph Harris singing 6 white boomers is my guess
Absoultely losing my mind. The only way this could be more perfect is if it was a duet. Gorgeous.
Tim Minchin wrote this song for his baby daughter and if you haven't heard the orginal you should listen to it because Tim is amazing :)
Learning this song for a Christmas Open Mic next week. When I say "learning" I actually mean practicing singing it without crying. Beautiful.
You should let yourself cry. Good singers are awesome, but emotional ones are priceless.
This cover is just beautiful.

Have to agree with all the positive comments made of Kate's cover - her voice simply resonates pleasantly and emotively with my ear
Beautiful, really beautiful. I must have heard this song from Tim Minchin 30 times and only managed to make it without shedding tears on 5 occasions. Your version provoked the exact same reaction.
Ah this is a beautiful song, it will be repeating in my household for several weeks
1 Like for the Minchin cover, 2 likes for her wonderfully beautiful voice! Never heard of her before...clearly my loss.

Great cover of my favourite Christmas song. Thank you ❤️

nice work
Australian atheist Christmas carol. The best Christmas song written. A good response to the religious who ask atheists "what do you people do at Christmas?"
also, Keir plays so beautifully.
Capo is on the 4th fret. Key of E. Hope that helps.

Get behind Kate for an Aria 2021 by listening to her new album Child in Reverse
It sounds like the song connected with her.
Well, this is just a little fucking delight. Merry Christmas!
Right back at you, this is everything Christmas is not always, but should always be.
Kate covering Tim, does it get more awesome
Very well sung but would love to hear your own words on this subject Kate.
I really like Christmas
It's sentimental, I know, but I just really like it
I am hardly religious
I'd rather break bread with Dawkins than Desmond Tutu
To be honest
And yes, I have all of the usual objections
To consumerism, the commercialisation of an ancient religion
To the westernisation of a dead Palestinian
Press-ganged into selling Playstations and beer
But I still really like it
I'm looking forward to Christmas
Though I'm not expecting a visit from Jesus
I'll be seeing my dad
My brother and sisters, my gran and my mum
They'll be drinking white wine in the sun
I don't go in for ancient wisdom
I don't believe just 'cause ideas are tenacious it means they're worthy
I get freaked out by churches
Some of the hymns that they sing have nice chords
But the lyrics are dodgy
And yes, I have all of the usual objections
To the mis-education of children who, in tax-exempt institutions
Are taught to externalise blame
And to feel ashamed and to judge things as plain right and wrong
But I quite like the songs
I'm not expecting big presents
The old combination of socks, jocks and chocolate's is just fine by me
'Cause I'll be seeing my dad
My brother and sisters, my gran and my mum
They'll be drinking white wine in the sun
I'll be seeing my dad
My brother and sisters, my gran and my mum
They'll be drinking white wine in the sun
And you, my baby girl
My jetlagged infant daughter
You'll be handed round the room
Like a puppy at a primary school
And you won't understand
But you will learn someday
That wherever you are and whatever you face
These are the people who'll make you feel safe in this world
My sweet blue-eyed girl
And if my baby girl
When you're twenty-one or thirty-one
And Christmas comes around
And you find yourself nine thousand miles from home
You'll know what ever comes
Your brothers and sisters and me and your mum
Will be waiting for you in the sun
When Christmas comes
Your brothers and sisters, your aunts and your uncles
Your grandparents, cousins and me and your mum
We'll be waiting for you in the sun
Drinking white wine in the sun
Darling, whenever you come
We'll be waiting for you in the sun
Drinking white wine in the sun
Waiting for you in the sun
Darling, when Christmas comes
We'll be waiting for you in the sun
Waiting
I really like Christmas
It's sentimental, I know

Tim tends to change the words every second time he sings it too. You can't pick one version as authoritative.

But apart from that, no.
This is a great song, she can lip sync on my knob for all i care, it still sounds great

Awesome cover, amazing voice, nice subtle guitar. Pity the terrible dubbing makes it unpleasant to watch.
Really good but can’t beat the original

It's not a protest song. It's a song about eternal love. And ironic because it's also antireligious

+Darryl Hetherington Get real..Kate sings it beautifully.
doesn't sound honest. just a cover without any heart in it. looks like you have not understood the meaning of this beautiful song
A bit dodgy!
I think you have chosen the wrong song to sing. Your voice is good, but you should sing other songs...
I dislike reality show fake-ness. Therefor, I dislike this over-produced fake-under-produced production. Merry Christmas!
