I don't know how he can sing that song without crying. It gets me every time.
Does the same to me, however i know why. Both my parents and my brother died of cancer. No one is drinking white wine in the sun waiting for me at christmas. I fucking hate that time of year. Still a lovely and beautiful song though.

I always understood his lyrics ( as is my right to interpret art in the way I choose) to mean those people have already passed, and they are waiting for us. We may not see them.
But they are there.
Waiting for our return.
With wine.
Relaxing.
On our behalf.
As we have an ability to stress about things we ought to know we cannot control...so those who went before us, are waiting patiently, lovingly & ready for us living, to chill, be calm, then we might realise that they never went away! X

He's not under rated. He's a comedian and they gave him a whole 55 piece orchestra. He's bloody brilliant
I've been an avid fan for more than a decade. His fame and appreciation continues to grow. "Underrated" is an overused comment.

I'm a little ashamed to admit that I have no idea who Tim Minchin is. But after listening to that gorgeous melody, evocative lyrics, and blissful voice, I intend to dive right in and discover all I can about this man.
Very talented individual, did all the music and lyrics to Matilda and Groundhog the musicals.

I do every time I listen to this one. It's probably my single favorite xmas song because it speaks to what the holiday means to me, and cuts away all of the mythology and religion, all of the consumer capitalism, in favor of reconnecting with loved ones, even from thousands of miles away. It's an important theme for me most the time, as my Partner's on one side of the globe, and my kin and kith are on the other.
What a poet, I adore his work.
i know he's australian but he often reminds me of a brit and he even calls people from the north of the uk a northerner, and is on a bunch of our shows, so does he live here or somthing?

@@expressrobkill he lives in Australia, he lived both in the UK and America for a few years but he is living and working in Australia currently with his wife and kids and I believe he is currently filming season 2 of his hit TV show Upright

Tim Minchin is amazing. I listen every year, while I'm living 16000km away from my beloved Australia. So beautiful.
how do you achieve THAT? The Earth circumference is ~24000Km, meaning the furthest you can be from any other point on Earth is at max 12000Km away :P
But I get your point ... my family lives ~8000Km from here and I tear up every time I listen to this song.

I lost my dad a while back, this year I lost my mum as well, I can't complain though,
they were both great parents,
but they won't be here this Christmas, at least physically,

Christmas is a rough time of year for a lot of people. This song never fails to make me smile - even during the cold dark days of winter. The visual this song conjures up in my head of his loving family celebrating in Australia just makes me happy. Enjoy

Impressive, haven't heard of Tim Minchin until now, and I must say those lyrics hit me. Pretty accurate description of my own view on christmas.
Wonderful! I happened upon this song when my daughter was teaching English to students in China and was, in fact, almost 9,000 miles from home at Christmas (and she has blue eyes). I didn't know about Tim Minchin then, but now I'm hooked. Congratulations to James and his wife on their new baby girl. :) I still can't get through the "daughter" part of the song without tearing up...and she's 27.

I do not remember the last time I felt so emotional towards a song before I started listening to this one, been listening to it so many times and it never fails to get to me.
