    Your cat is cool. I also haven't thought of CoC for years.
    Alright, geology.
    Some of you may have heard about the earthquakes that happened in Turkey a few weeks ago. That's because Turkey sits on a number of plate boundaries-tectonic plates that intersect in Turkey include the Arabian, Iranian, African and Eurasian plates (plus a handful of tiny microplates) so it's a very complicated area with complex fault systems that accumulate a lot of strain. When that strain was released in the first big earthquake, it moved some of the stress onto a different fault, which is why that second fault also had a big earthquake despite being 100 km away. That second earthquake is technically NOT an aftershock-this type of earthquake pair is called an earthquake couplet.
    One reason why there's been so much death and destruction is because while Turkey has great earthquake codes, they've been allowing building companies to build buildings not up to the code (in exchange for a small fine) in order to build as many buildings as possible to boost the economy. Doing things shoddily is not a good idea in earthquake zones.
    Turkey also has a number of volcanoes across it as a result of the plate boundaries. One volcano in eastern Turkey, Mount Ararat, is significant both as the place that Christians identify with where Noah's Ark landed after the Flood and as the national symbol of Armenia (it used to be part of Armenia, and many Armenian politicians advocate for a border change to bring the mountain back into Armenian hands).

    • @plebisMaximus
      @plebisMaximus ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh damn, the rock man. I've been meaning to ask you, can volcanoes come up individually or only on fault lines like any other mountain?

    • @erusean8492
      @erusean8492 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Man, I love these geology posts. No idea why they began but I sure hope they continue

      @@plebisMaximus check out the Paricutín in Mexico. It just started rising in the 1940s. I have visited it, and you see the village close by which has been covered with ash.
      PS: another geologist here, that's cool to see.

    • @Osariik
      @Osariik ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@plebisMaximus Generally volcanoes form at plate boundaries, usually in areas where two plates are pulling apart from each other (because it allows magma to well up between them) or where an oceanic plate is subducting (moving under) under another plate (either oceanic or continental; because the subducting plate melts and that melted rock rises to form volcanoes). Volcanoes can occur in other tectonically-active areas that aren't plate boundaries, like there's a handful in the western United States related to extensional forces in the Basin and Range province (Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico).
      Volcanoes *can* also occur away from plate boundaries/faults. Usually this occurs on a thing called a hot spot, which basically is just a hotter-than-normal area of the mantle. This does still tend to create a chain of volcanoes, like what you see in Hawai'i (if you look at a map of the seafloor northwest of Hawai'i there's a chain of extinct volcanoes stretching all the way to Alaska) or Yellowstone.
      There's a few other situations where volcanoes can occur not at plate boundaries or faults that are more complicated. There's a volcano on the Chinese-North Korean border, Paektu, which seems to be related to a weird slab of crust disconnected from other slabs but still subducting. In southeastern Australia, the western half of the state of Victoria is COVERED in old lava flows and dormant or extinct volcanoes, and no one really knows why because there's no hot spot or extension there, so it's a bit of a mystery (though there are plenty of theories).
      Long story short, yes, volcanoes can occur away from faults.

      @@erusean8492 Thank you! I'm glad you enjoy them, I love writing them myself, and I often learn something new while writing them. I always hope that other people enjoy them and maybe learn something cool. I'll definitely be continuing them.
      I started writing them because when Q is playing with a specific region of the world it's fairly easy to connect that with the geology of the area and the cool facts related to it. One of my passions is sharing how cool geology is with other people.
