Yes!!! I’ve been wondering why reactions to this have been slower than usual. This is one of the most feel-good songs ever anyway, and then Voiceplay just loads it up with everything we love. That was a D-frickin’-SIX out of Cesar’s mouth. Now for The Bass Gang’s If I Had a Heart-their best yet. Anyway, I’m so glad to see your reactions when they drop!!
This was originally going to ne a mini, but Layne decided it was too much fun to cut short, so they did this longer version. Cesar did both sets of whistle notes at C6 and D6, and Geoff went down to a C1 in the background. Did you know this song originated in South Africa in 1938 with the Zulu language title of "Mbube" - it was Pete Seeger and The Weavers who recorded it as "Wimoweh" that brought it to American attention in 1950/51. After other recordings of it were made, in 1961 it was re-written/arranged to it's most popular and well-known form as the doo-wop/R&B hit, "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" as recorded by the Tokens. There was a big lawsuit from the original composer's family when Disney used it in The Lion King without paying any song royalties. Such a history for this song!
I had to watch this twice - I got so caught up watching the critters the first time that I had to watch it again for VoicePlay. IMHO, their best yet! Great singing, harmonies & beatboxing and funny as hell into the bargain.
Didn't read all of the comments to see if someone already answered, but I am pretty sure Cesar was doing both the long riff and the whistle notes (studio magic) because, at one point slightly earlier, his lips were moving to the long riff while the whistle notes were there. Then his lips were doing the whistle while the long riff was there. I might be wrong, though. Loved your reaction and your joy.
