They consider themselves as family. In fact, when Geoff got married, Kathy said she knew he was already ‘married’ to VoicePlay. When Cesar joined he started calling Geoff and Layne ‘Dad and Papi’ and Eli ‘brother. ‘
So funny that out of the hundreds of Voiceplay songs, you do two of the "vio-Layne" songs back to back. Youve basically seen like 2/3 of the violin appearances. Its really not a regular thing.🤣
There is always a lot going on in VP video but this might take the cake. LOL OH yes they're great friends. Geoff, the bass, and Layne, beatboxer and violin, have been friends since middle school. Eli, bald and bearded tenor has been with them for years. Also J.None, the black baritone, Cesar, Puerto Rican tenor is the newest member, since 2021.
J None was a full time member of the group up until about two years ago when, as I understand it, he was recruited by the navy to work in their music department? Something like that. I know that he's in the navy these days, but sings with them every chance he gets. The mall where they recorded this is where Layne's production studio Pattycake Productions is, and they do a lot of their minis out in the main area.
I watched this when they debuted it 2 days ago and have watched many, many times since. I always have to laugh at their " special level of goofiness" as they term it. They have so many great... and goofy covers they have done. One of my favorites is 'Butter'. There is so much lunacy going on in the background you need to watch several times and will still notice something new. They also have so many videos of more serious music that I love but I adore people that aren't afraid to have fun and make fun of themselves.
They really are super close and are a very tight-knit group. Layne and Geoff have been best friends since middle school! They love doing silly things things like this and never take themselves too seriously. 😊
This does seem more improvisational-a lot like their shorts, which are often filmed in the mall you see here. Love the “dad dances” in the background in parts. The harmonies, however, are beautifully developed and clearly Layne put some work in on this arrangement. He also listened to his audience-we love it when he gets to sing, and even more when VioLayne makes an appearance, even tho it’s not acapella. Anyway, great reaction-I’m glad you like these guys!
The Lion Sleeps Tonight was originally written and performed by Solomon Linda in 1939 in Zulu under the name Mbube. The English version's lyrics were written by George David Weiss. A huge portion of VoicePlay's video are filmed in and around the building holding their studio Pattycake Productions owned and run by Layne and Tony Wakim, one of the group's founding members who prefers to work behind the scenes now. And actually this is the third number where Layne played the violin. Our first sight of Violayne was their video for Warriors, the fist of their post-apocalyptic trilogy.
Lane and one of the early members of the group have a production company. Pretty sure the studio is in that mall. Many of their "shorts" are in the mall. J None is one of their former regular members and Caeser actually is the one who replaced him. J has been a semi regular featured guest singer recently. Geoff and Lane have been performing together since high school and Eli (pronounced Elly) has been with the group for a very long time as well. You should also check out Geoff's solo stuff. He does all of the vocals and you get to see his amazing range that is not as apparent in the group unless you're paying close attention.
The vocal track is always recorded ahead of time. They lip sync or sing along, depending on the intensity of that part, during the video shoot, The shenanigans going on were planned by Layne, sort of, but they were goofing around with the choreography. Voiceplay toured extensively prior to Covid. When the world shut down, they couldn't tour and ramped up their studio work. At the same time, Geoff, in his spare time, started doing solo work. Speaking of folk songs, he did Shenandoah a while back. It is sweet, soothing, and wonderful.
I didn't realize that this was going to be one of their shorts.... still fun, though. Layne often - not always - chooses to arrange and direct very antic, hilarious performances. He has great comic timing and plays the clown expertly. See their covers of Jingle Bell Rock/Mean Girls, We Don't Talk About Bruno, The Hall of the Mountain King. When I saw the title I thought this would be another in that mold. For more classic rock covers, In the Air Tonight and Creep are excellent.
Layne started to arrange this for a mini, but was enjoying it so much he kept going. It’s in this format for lack of a steadycam operator. (Layne can do that too, but not while he’s in the video)
😂😅❤️Really enjoyed the voices and the shenanigans in the background too.!! A song dear to my heart and dear to my country of birth in Africa. These guys are having so much fun while doing what they love.😅 Can’t help laughing all the way thru …especially the ‘dancing’ in the background! Actually reminds me of another vocal group , crossover quartet, Forestella, who are closer than most brothers and spent 300 days a year together as practice freaks! Many hilarious livestreams and awesome live performances later, 2 are married now so I’m sure there was some negotiating!😂 They did a song : Like Someone from a Legend, an original song written a few years ago now and always made me think of the one you’re reacting to here. Many new fans thought it might have been from some Disney story but no, it was actually written and sung originally by a South Korean whose name escapes me At the moment .. I think Forestella did their cover paying homage to the original artist on IMMORTAL SONGS 2 Singing the legend.….not acapella though, just to be clear. The vocals are incredible though.
Nice surprise seeing you react to this one so quickly! 👍🦁🤟 I would be remiss if I didn't recommend this from Aurora: "20150724 Aurora and her band cover the Lion Sleeps Tonight".

Their personalities are definitely shining through. The vocals are amazing. That's the joy of Voiceplay - their genre range is incredible. 🌹🕊

The 'dad' dancing gets me every time!
Great Reaction to an incredible Acapella Group.

VoicePlay is starting our year off with stellar musical playtime. They're such goofballs and we love that about them.
Most of their songs are fun, but my favourite is We Don't Talk About Bruno. Just hilarious and brilliantly sung.

It's not a short. That's the complete song.

You went from Metallica to mall shenanigans and Dad dancing... whiplash yet?
Lol
This one always makes my heart sing!
Geoff doing the Harlem Shake 😂

You got VioLayne 2 videos in a row 😅
