    I didn't think I knew a trans person until my best friend came out to me many years ago, and then my sibling. Probably most people know a trans person, they just don't know it.

      I think this is a big part of it! Being out is dangerous, and for trans people, realizing who you are can feel so damning because it feels like you are going to be ostracized from society. Social change is slow, and we suffer a lot 💛

    great video! i hope that me introducing myself with my they/them pronouns to the students i am TAing (i'm a grad student) is helping nudge things towards improvement, as i imagine i am the first nonbinary person some of them have met.

    I’m the only trans person I know. I live in a very conservative city in Indiana, and I can’t find any LGBTQ groups or organizations near me. I get stared at and even thrown looks of disgust as a non-binary trans person out in public. I feel extremely isolated and alone, and I honestly don’t know what to do to find connection and to help my fellow trans individuals.

      This is so heartbreaking and I am so sorry to hear that this is your situation right now 💛 It can be really hard to find community when you live in a rural place (I live in a rural town too, and my nearest friends are a two hour drive away). A lot of people find communities online that help support them until they can move or until the situation locally gets better. Sending lots of love your way 💛

    I don't know any trans people either, I don't think the statistic should be that concerning. Trans people are a minority after all, so it makes sense.

    • @babs_babs
      @babs_babs 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      it’s concerning. it means most people know us through media or what they hear second hand. 9 times out of 10 that means a bunch of bad info and shit assumptions under the surface

    • @AWylde
      @AWylde  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I get your point, but an estimated 1% of people in America are trans, or one is every 100 people. We ARE a minority and a small group of people in the grand scheme, but certainly not so small that you'd have never met anyone who was trans. A lot of trans people aren't able to be out because it isn't safe, and that's what this statistic brings to mind. If we can create a culture that is safer for trans and nonbinary people, more of us will feel safe to be out.

      Also about in one family: Like many characteristics of a person, there's a genetic component. If there's one trans person in a family, the likelyhood of there being another trans relative is higher than average.
      Also, I know more closeted trans girls than closeted trans guys. They don't feel safe enough to come out.

    welcome back! great video, kinda makes me feel guilty for not being properly out as agender to everyone I know, some people know but often it is too complicated to explain and makes people feel uncomfortable so I sort-of haven't bothered, and I've always been on the fence about if I call myself trans (my parents would probably freak if I did), your video's have been a great help for me to understand myself tho :)

    • @AWylde
      @AWylde  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Aww, I don't want you to feel guilty! Everyone's situation is different, and I am very fortunate tio have intersecting privileges that allow me to be visible with relative safety. I get feeling like it's a lot, I certainly don't bring up my gender in every mundane situation. Thank you for watching, and for commenting :)

      @@AWylde Thanks so much for the reply (I think you're awesome btw) and don't worry, it's not you who has made me feel guilty, I've thought about this quite a lot and I have a few trans friends who I feel like I should be supporting more openly
      I'm in a totally safe position to make my agender-ness known to all, it just comes from a laziness POV on my part, as in I know my parents would be weird about if for quite a while but they would totally still love me, and I have a lot of family and older generation friends who just don't understand this stuff (because it is modern and new) and I just can't be bothered being the one who spends hours trying to explain it all to them, I'm not good at explaining things anyway so I'm just happy with having told enough people to reduce my dysphoria and everyone else is happy thinking of me as a tom-boy :) but it would be really cool if you did a short and to the point video that explained the concept of gender identity aimed at someone who is possibly older and doesn't understand it that people like me could show family and friends etc... juts an idea and sorry for the long reply LOL

    You seem like a very thoughtful and good person. However you have not represented the issue of the 285 “anti lgbt bills” accurately or fairly.
    It is true that there are a lot of intolerant and hateful people out there but a lot of those bills are designed to protect minors from medically transitioning too early.
    Also, a criticism I have of many in parts of the lgbt community is that they try to trivialize, or try to diminish the significant numbers of detransitioners out there.
    A lot of these bills are a reaction to the tragic reality of detransitioners who were counselled into the medical transitioning track too rapidly, without adequate, thorough, methodical therapy to investigate other potential issues.

    Did trans come first and then non binary? Is there a similarity between non binary and social transgender or does one need to medically transition (at any level) to be non binary transgender? I still haven't found an explanation on how someone would transition gender/sex identity then be non binary.

    • @babs_babs
      @babs_babs 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      hi, i’m nb and trans so i’ll give a shot at answering.
      asking if trans or nonbinary came first is like asking if gay or bi came first. it’s just a way people are.
      nonbinary people have a wide range of experiences with their gender and with dysphoria. they’re less likely to medically transition than binary trans people and are less likely to feel dysphoria, but that really depends on the individual person.
      for myself i went through a medical transition that included a surgery and hormones. my goal with transitioning was never to become the opposite sex or to pass as it, i just personally felt my body had been put through the wrong puberty and i’ve been trying to recover from that. ive had to go through a lot of physical changes, social changes, and legal changes to get where i am now, and i’ve still got a ways to go.
      i basically went from being cis/endo sex and passing as straight to being intersex, androgynous, and visibly queer. i don’t see much different in my transition from a binary person, my end goal was just different.

      @@babs_babs thank you for sharing your personal story. I keep forgetting that "trans" means transitioned gender, which is no longer a definable binary.
      In that case I think I can understand transgender non-binary.
      Trans used to mean transsexual, which meant changing one's sex characteristics to the other binary sex. A female transsexual was once a male. A male transsexual was once a female. It was very binary.
      Transgender is not necessarily transsexual.

    • @user-jf3lo6ss2i
      @user-jf3lo6ss2i 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No such thing as non binary, she is clearly a non conforming female (so part of the sex binary), which is absolutely fine as gender stereotypes belong in the bin. But I have no idea why they want to give themselves these labels, infact it could be said to be regressive as it actually only reinforces the notion of gender stereotypes.

      @@metallurgico You can't transition out of your sexed body, the only thing you can do is change your gender. Trans men can get pregnant and give birth because they are female, ie. part of the sex binary male and female.

      @babs_babs 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@user-jf3lo6ss2ithat’s not true at all. most of our sex is changeable. you can change your hormones, your genitals, your phenotype, whether or not you have gonads…
      sex is not binary at all. intersex and transexual people are living proof that sex is more complex than the two options kids are told

    • @AWylde
      @AWylde  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      "Trans" means that a person doesn't identify with the gender that they were assigned at birth. I can see how it might be confusing, but trans isn't short for "transition," it's short for "transgender." Someone who DOES identify with the gender they were assigned at birth would be cisgender, or cis.

      The usual estimate for the percentage of the population that's transgender is 0.5%, so you may expect 1 trans person for every 200 people you meet. So it's likely most people have known a trans person at some point, just never realised it.
