Curious to hear your runner-ups / also-rans for each color. You hinted at that with the black pens, but hearing about the contenders for some of the other colors would be interesting. Maybe for the pencast?
You've got some great skills, Drew. Are you writing your own material? Hysterical. Brilliant. Oh, and the information is astute and super cool too. Write on!
I know so many artists that use the bright yellow LAMY Safari (including myself) for travel, urban sketching that sort of thing. Always reliable, durable & easy to find in your bag!💛💛💛💛💛

I am not a fan of red pens but I made an exception with the Kaweco Al Sport in Ruby. Such a soft ruby colour and looks great inked with Pilot Yama Budo. I am delighted to see the Kaweco Al Sport in Iguana Blue and Lamy Studio in Black in your list. 😊
You always manage to make me smile Drew- Thanks! I do need a few of those pens- and a wombat sticker! Thanks for choosing a variety of not too expensive models. ❤️
I would like to suggest a challenge to Goulet to do this list again but with pens under $50 and each pen type can only be mentioned once. So no flooding the list with TWSBI or Lamy Safaris. With permission I’ll draw up my own list and we can compare notes?
Hey Drew. Great choices. I really like my Visconti Mirage Mythos Apollo. It is a beautiful caramel like color. I also have one. I even switched out the original nib, and put in a steel nib from a Faber Castell.
What a great video, Drew. The one major company I haven’t tried yet, Lamy. *Black - Fabre Castell E-motion (matte black) *Blue - gotta love the Sailor Northern Lights Goulet pen exclusive. (first gold nib) or Diplomat nexus blue is a beautiful new edition. *the diplomat magnum is ridiculously good for such a cheap plastic pen.
Said it before and I’ll say it again - the Platinum Plasir is a great pen - glad that you have it listed here. I would say that the orange is one of my fave at the moment (paired with a very fast drying/water resistant Rohrer & Klingner Sketch Ink in Lilly - dark brown) - I can watercolor over it almost immediately! Also, purple - how about the TWSBI Grape Mini?
what a fun video! I don't need another pen right now, but I love how you also have arbitrary rules about things to help limit things down. Thank you for the recommendations, and fun video!
Cool topic! My own list for all the colors covered here. And I own all of the pens listed below: Black - Sailor King of Pen Ebonite Blue - Visconti Divina Blue Elegance Brown - Stipula Florentia Opera Clear - Sailor King of Pen Green - Waterman Edson Orange - Aurora 88 Flex Pink - Karas Kustoms V2 Purple - Aurora 88 Nebulosa Red - Pilot Custom Urushi Vermillion Silver - Pilot Silvern Tsumugi Turquoise - Sheaffer Sentinel (snorkel) White - OMAS 360 Iceberg Yellow - OMAS Ogiva
I love those unabashedly, enthusiastically opinionated picks :). Granted, I would probably not exactly pick half of these for myself for the particular color, but they are all solid choices.
This is a great, fun list. I gotta say though, as someone who _LOVES_ purple pens, I'd go with the Sailor Pro Gear in the Goulet exclusive color "Northern Lights (purple)." I mean obviously, right? That pen is just so friggen' gorgeous! I just wish I got the Pro Gear version instead of the Pro Gear Slim (slim is JUST a bit small for my hands when not posted). ...aaaaand! Runner up for my pick for purple pen (...peck of pickled peppers!) is the Dark Violet Lamy Scala. It just feels so great since it's all metal and feels "heavy duty." Love it with a 14K Lamy nib, that are easy enough to put on the pen. I think I really like the way that brown pen looks. I need to look that over some more, lol.
Thanks for not having gross fingers, Drew! Far too often do I have to watch a video showcasing an item co-starring someone's gross fingers all covered in hangnails, etc!
My Esterbrook Estie Oversize in Sunflower mocks your puny yellow Lamy Safari and basks in its own sunny brilliance! :P Great choices for orange, turquoise, and brown, though; I have the latter two myself, and the only reason I don't have the orange Aero is because there are SO MANY gorgeous colors of Aero that I change my mind every time I think about getting another one. Like the citrus, and the antique rose, and the turquoise and and and! I'll also reluctantly accept your choice for red pen, only because my favorite bright red pen was an exclusive limited edition from another retailer (the Nahvalur Nautilus Brilliant Bunny from Enigma Stationery), so of course you couldn't pick that one. Though there are several versions of the Pineider Avatar in Devil Red that are quite good...
Well the yellow Safari is absolutely undeniable. It, like the much less popular and much more expensive yellow selections from Aurora which I don't believe you carry, are just "Go Big or Go Home." I can't really quibble too much in general except I did want to give Turquoise to Benu. Which one? IDK! They are just really good at that color. Probably Bora Bora because everything about it that is NOT turquoise is in service to it, to make it look more cool and refreshing.
@@Gouletpens I couldn't really quibble with your orange choice, even though my own orange pen is the Retro Pop. I have to concede that while it's a lovely seventies vibe, it's not ORANGE!
My personal choice for best transparent pen would have to be the Sailor 1911 Compass. The clear grip and feed are just too cool. I just wish they were available in more nib sizes than medium-fine.
I had a feeling you might go with the Lamy Studio LX 😉 (YAY Lamy Studio! it was my first). I've been looking at the Kaweco Sport in Iguana Blue. I think now, based on this video - I might need to add it to my collection sooner. 🙂 Great video as always Drew!
Hi Drew! I’m working 7 days this week and this was a much needed video to watch. Not only did you have me laughing at the introduction but you had me add two to three new pens to this pen newbies wishlist. You can tell Brian that I added the Lamy Dialog to my list and now placed a question mark next to the Lamy 2000…let’s see if he opposes😢…can you do a new video now with matching inks for all these pens? I was watching this and I was thinking of DC Superheroes matching those pens…lol! Thanks for this creating and suggestions! Have a great start to the weekend!
My 12 year old picked a plasir to be her first "real" fountain pen. She didn't like the cheap plastic look of the Preppy that I gave her. She loves her plasir and I'm hoping that it keeps her hands off mine - I've already had to replace my safari nib because she bent it!
Suggestion for the pencast: Along the same idea as "The Office characters as pens," come up with some animals as pens! I'm curious what a wombat as a pen would be. My favorite animal is a penguin, so just as penguins are a bird that can't fly the Pilot Iro-Utsushi dip pen is a pen that can't be filled with ink! 😄
Fun evaluation, Drew! The backwards approach changes the thought process - pick a color first, then choose a pen to fit that color. I've been doing it wrong all this time! 🙃 Can we also choose an ink first, and then find the ideal pen to use with that?
Hey Drew, Combining this video with your enthusiasm for Star Wars: Would it be possible to tinker together a Storm trooper Lamy safari from current available models?
Oh Drew, I love a good purple pen. I was very curious for your suggestion. This Diplomat you showed us looks very petrol to me. My second favorite color, this pen could be my match made in heaven. Purple and petrol in one, what a magic 😂
kinda bummed Benu didnt make the list Drew. Your list was great and now i have to build my own.. Pink Shark, Purple Pilot Custom, Lamy Bronze for yellow?...
What a fun video, pure entertainment. Great range of prices too, with that Lamy Dialog being the bit of a “stretch” at 350 and that Pilot Silvern being quite the investment at 550. It looks sweet, and I guess the goal was “the best” in each color so there ya go 🤣
Probably one of the best videos in recent memory. If I hadn't just ordered from Goulet in the past few days, I'm pretty sure this would have me opening my wallet. Lol, seriously good job on this one Drew. I too like to set up my own arbitrary rules and limitations. I can't argue with your solid choices and logic here. Thanks!
Thanks for the video! Drew mentioned that the Lamy Dialog CC has an 18 K gold nib. However, the video shows that the pen has a 14 K one. Is the former, correct? Looking forward to purchase from your store!
Great choices, except the dialog cc. I have one and love how mine looks and writes but the opening/closing mechanism gets sloppy and misaligned over time. It now irritates me when i look at it, still writes great but it's annoying.
the red wine platinum century is my fav red and for purple opus 88 Omar and Esterbrook JR are my fav purples. plus a few from pens white would be a moon man a2 for me. brown would also be e92 elite too
I agree with the Kaweco Collection AL Sport Iguana Blue…. …. 😁 I shy away from buying a Visconti because I’m afraid it will dry up rather quickly with the snap cap… I have 2 Pineider pens and they just drive me nuts, I have given up on them by now.
Love these so much 😂😂 maybe you should do multiple on colour choices under $xyz and over $xyz. Mostly for my enjoyment although that navy Lamy dialog looks amazing and now have to go look it up
I prefer the green Aero. And But if I had to buy a pen in orange, yes, I would go for the Aero. No competition. However, I hate the Diplomat Magnum nib, perhaps because I got the extra fine. So scratchy. 😢
Now I need a sticker of a wombat holding an iguana blue al-sport. 😂
I second that! 😂
You picked not just the best possible pen in each colour, you also picked very much affordable pens for everyone.
A happy accident! - Drew
Except for that stunning silver job! I checked the price. I'll have to remain with my nose pressed against the store window.
Viscontis?
This is very true!
The diplomat “purple” pen really comes off as a blue! 💜🤷🏻♀️💙
It's a hard pen to capture - it does look more purple in person, though! - Drew
@@Gouletpens I trust you Drew🖋✨
It looks purple in person, but the "prismatic effect" does make some sections look dark blue at certain angles and in certain light.
Great nib on the Diplomat Magnum, a seriously underrated pen (though I have to admit, the cheap plastic really makes it feel like a disposable pen).
I agree
