    I wish my grandpa had lived longer because he did what you do. He died when I was 5. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I love wordworking but I'm relying on people like you to help me. You're my surrogate grandpa. Thanks man. People like me really appreciate you sharing your knowledge.

    I have been a wood shop teacher for about 20 years now and I still learn new woodworking tricks all of the time! Thanks for this tip! It will greatly improve my students scroll saw projects as well as my own!

    Great tips, thanks. I did the wrong thing by starting out scrolling with spiral blades. I’m learning now with the straight plain blades on my Dewalt 788. These tips help me a lot.

      Tom, I did as well because I didn't know better (and listened to a guy that swore by them). I still use them from time to time but only when I can't get a 27" project to clear my 21" throat. :)

      It would be great if you made a video describing the different types of blades. I want to order blades to do more precise work, but it’s my first scroll saw and I don’t know what will fit my machine or what brand or style would be best.

    Wow, I haven't ventured in scroll sawing yet but it is next on my list. In the meantime, watching lots of videos and trying to become familiar. You make this look incredibly easy, obviously comes with time and experience. My question is - do you have to spend a lot of money on a saw to obtain this level of precision? Any suggestions for a beginner saw?

    • @fredwilson4345
      @fredwilson4345 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stepannie - yes, many hours of practice. NO, you don't have to spend a lot of money to get started. Harbor freight, Craftsman and a few others are less than $150 starter machines. We all probably started out with these machines and then moved up when we "got the scrolling bug". Good luck and keep us informed. Fred

    • @fredwilson8900
      @fredwilson8900  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Frito - I personally use Flying Dutchman Ultra Reverse blades. Regarding ur saw - If you are happy with your saw then it's the best one for you. Can you explain "blade turns way too much"?

    • @76brichard
      @76brichard 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fred Wilson He probably is referring to the blade not staying straight as you go around a tight curve. My blades do the same thing. I can literally see the blade “bending” as I turn the wood to make a tight curve.
      However, I’m a newbie to the scroll saw so I could definitely be doing something wrong🤷🏼‍♀️

    • @yasminpasta972

      For me, I use hot glue along the edges - the bottom layer is slightly larger than the top layer do I can get a good bead around the project. Thanks for asking.

    • @fredwilson4345
      @fredwilson4345 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Personally, I use hot glue to keep them together. Many folks use masking tape but I find it to move and loose the accuracy of the cuts.

  • @yasminpasta972
    @yasminpasta972 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The blades dont twist n break when u turn the wood piece while cutting?
    What type and size blade are u using?

    • @fredwilson8900
      @fredwilson8900  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yasmin, as long as the saw is running and I turn rather slowly, the blades will not twist or break. Over time the blade may break at the top or bottom due to deflection and old age. Mostly I use Flying Dutchman Ultra Reverse #5. Thanks for asking.

    • @fredwilson8900
      @fredwilson8900  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This vid was with two pieces of 6.35 mm. Even with 20mm oak, the same techniques are valid. I just increase the size of the blade (usually #5 or #7)

    • @DKDonson
      @DKDonson 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I see,,, this eagle I cut had little details , little curves at the claws for exampel,, couldn't turn the piece that sharp, what about spiral blades in such cases? I've found some on the net.
