Thanks for this! I wish I saw this a 1/2 hour ago 😢. We live in a couple acres and he was snoozing in the sun 10 feet from me! Two little dogs came in my yard and Max bolted after them! My street is quiet but a main road crosses it. I jumped in the car after doing all the wrong things and took off. THANK GOD he randomly stopped at the stop sign and turned around and ran towards me when he heard my car coming. I lost it and yelled at him and put him time out in my house. I’m trying to calm down because that scared the shite out of me!
Hi, we're so sorry you went through that but glad you're all well. How scary! Remember to give yourself grace, you did your best in a difficult situation. The tip on the video can be helpful for another emergency but what's even better is to train a reliable recall 💕
My dog escaped toward big traffic street. Me running in opposite direction and making funny noises wouldn't work. I run after him ,got between the cars marking signs to drivers to stop. Crossed the street and managed to catch him, but a nice lady with a car stopped to help me take him home. I didn't have his leash. It was a scary experience. Since I taught him the word STOP, and he is slowing down to full stop. We adopted him last year. He was a street dog, and very much street smart!💖🐾
Same thing just happened to me. I tried running in the other direction, but he just kept going up towards the road. He got there before me and I was sure he'd get killed. Luckily, the traffic stopped on both sides, and some kind people got out and helped me. I almost had heart failure, but my pup just didn't have a clue what all the fuss was about! Time for training 😮
Super tip Susan! I wish I had remember the “pop” part when I lost my puppy for more than 40 minutes Monday! It was a huge fenced area 250 acres so I did panic but I called him multiple time, I could not see him as the area is full of gullies, streams and hills that I went up and down for the time he was gone and had no idea where to go and look! Then he reappeared I pet him ( no word) but his leash back on and we resumed our walk! Phew! That is not an experience I want to repeat! Now I just need to rehearse the dolphin squeal :)
@@DogsThat yes and no because it was fenced I knew he would come back but where to look for him was the stressy part :) it is the first time he did that so caught me by surprise :)
My cavoodle is a runner. I've just started letting him off leash (after plenty of enclosed dog park practice runs first) at a semi enclose oval. When its time to leave and recall fails, I've started walking away from him. He's an explorer but also very attached, so he catches up pretty quick to put the lead back on. I didn't think to do this until recently because instinct is to 'save' your dog, but they just think it's a game. I'm glad I found this vid to affirm I'm not a bad pet owner!
I'll keep this one in mind! Our go-to right now is to make a sound and then sit like we've been hurt. (Imagine the sound you'd make if you twisted your ankle, then how you'd sit and hold it.) Dog comes back to check on us, mission accomplished. It has worked on several dogs (ours and not ours) so far, but it's always good to have more options!
Couldn't be happier with Recallers! Best training program ever, and I've put out a lot of money on trainers, seminars, and schools. You will very very happy.
My dog was currently running around the yard when I turned on this video. I got her 2 min after watching this! 😂 thank you. I’ve gotten her by running in the opposite direction before but never tried dropping before and it worked. She just stood over me confused.
I adopted a 7yr old Siberian Husky 8 months ago and she is a master escape artist! I've never had a dog that just runs off for miles. She climbs fences. Digs under the fence. I can see why she was at the shelter so often. I've torn my meniscus in my right knee, so I've found a neighbor that will take her running once a week.
Wow that sounds like a challenge! We hope your knee is better soon, but how wonderful that you have found a neighbor to help you out. Sometimes it takes a village!
This is such timely information. My Maisie is getting more clever at finding holes in my perimeter. So far I have been able to catch her or stop her before she got out, but I will try Sop, Pop and Roll next time. This is sadly too late for my first dog, Snoop, who bolted from the car and into traffic.
Love it 😍. Use this method if my pup disconnects from me on the beach & begins to do her own thing ! I shout “byeeee I’m leaving you”, turn away & rush off in the opposite direction. Works every time. The other 99.99% of the time her recall is perfect thanks to Recallers😎🐾
My cavalier recently dashed out the gate as soon as a guest opened it. I had to run after him like a headless chicken bc he just sprinted off down the road- had I not chased him I wouldn’t have been able to know which way he would go. He chases cars and cats 😭 so even if a nuclear bomb went off he wouldn’t flinch in that situation! Luckily he ran into someone’s garden and I got him back. I have a LOT of work to do with him on recall. Your channel is amazing thank you so much for all this valuable information!!!
Will definitely try this although my rescue WCS runs off like a whippet and doesn’t look back. She’s managed to slip free twice in five months - both times v scary but this evening, in cold and dark fields in England it was particularly heart stopping. She came right up to me after about twenty mins of free running. So, good girl for that and not trying g to run off again. 😵💫🐾🐾
I just shared this to every social media I have. I have seen so many lost dogs lately and I had a similar situation with my black mouth cur. I thought he was dead in negative 15 weather. My son decided to run the other way. Lo and behold our dog started chasing him. Then my husband could grab him. I thought he was dead. Ran in main road 2x. Super scary.

This just happened to me right now in a big traffic busy road my Chihuahua was running until I text my mom and told her about these tips to get her back
Hello! I got some story too like that. We adopted a dog with a very sad and bad past. She doing well. Im very thankful for that tipp. We also train her with a very long leash and keep her rewarding everytime she comes back. One time she run away because the lease fall out of hand and we panict and keep on running after her. A old man with a dog far before us of the route hears me saying please catch the leash, he catches it. That happend like a week after we adopted her the first time. That old man with his dog was our hero, after him nobody was out there like a western town. Next time i will try your tipp. The panic growls just deep, every one must be strong, it costs a lot strength to do that what you told in that video. In our scenario our dog doesnt know us for long time, i wonder, if that could have work out too. Im just happy, nothing happend to her back that day. Thank you for sharing your Videos.
Hi @katiemckown1502, Susan has a wonderful 3-part series that will teach you the steps for training off-leash recall. Here's part 1 to get you started, don't forget to watch parts 2 and 3 to help develop the training plan: th-cam.com/video/MHMzbxNElPs/w-d-xo.html. You got this! (Sarah - DogsThat Team)
What about a treasured Siberian Husky that made a break for it 9 hours ago and didn't look back. No one has seen her and it's beginning to rain here in Minnesota. She's only 2 years old and has never come back home without assistance 😮
This would work if you are in a big, green field and with some dogs only. I am in a sad place. I adopted a Chihuahua-Terrier mix and he was probably in a hoarding situation and left to his own devices, never inside a home. He is street smart but has a need to break out of the house and take off. He ran 1 mile in 30 mins and some people found him and brought him back. Since then, he has escaped numerous times and taken off down the pavement, crossing a major street (again) and eluding capture. Yes he has high exercise needs. I walk him 2 miles daily and take him to a park to run free and sniff wild things like terriers want to do. He still runs off. An open window, a crack in the fence, pushing screen doors open, etc. He also is a very picky eater even with roast pork, hamburgers, roast chicken, fresh Greek yoghurt, fish, salmon, veggies, scrambled eggs...! No junk food. He sleeps in a luxurious bed on my bed, eats like an emperor, walkies daily, professional grooming that I do. He has come a long way with being nice to other dogs, and not leaving the park anymore. But... your technique would not work on him. He goes off on his own, sniffing wild trails and could not care less what happens to me. If I shriek, he won't even hear it. This dog is closed off to bonding. I cannot get close to him, always fearful, always suspicious, always wanting to run away despite the best home he could have. He is going to be rehomed. I have had enough of this ungrateful dog. No more mutts. I will wait to rescue a pedigreed dog - mini poodle, my favorite. They are loyal and loving. This dog is disloyal and has no affection for me.
We have a corgi who people keep chasing , he just keeps running faster , his travel distance, 15 miles . Our corgi dog came from a rescue and very skittish. Any suggestions? Food station , Trail, cameras, flyers, yard signs . Thanks
I had done this already and he stop to watch me and keep walking away, ofer him treats, also set and show his favorite toy make noises with that toy no works, even our neighbors had call him and my dog get close to them but not enough to get catch, he is smart animal and he knows. What I do is just follow him to push him into a open gate door or a close path to catch him in there. It’s a horrible situation my husband wants to give him in adoption because keeping the door completely close all the time is difficult and my kids are been put in dangers crossing the street follow him. It a horrible situation 😢🙏🏻
Hi @Butterfly-bi3nl ! Thank you looking for solutions for your dog. So I have a Beagle, so you know right away I have a breed that is going to follow her nose. I’ve had quite a few beagles, but this is the first time in years that I’ve had a young one. I got her at around 3 months, and now she’s roughly 1.5 years old. I’m completely paranoid about her getting off leash. It happened last week in the pouring rain as I was about to leave for a work trip. It took about 45 mins, and a missed flight, to get her back. And she didn’t come back until I did what I should have done to begin with, go home myself. I tried going after her and talking sweet to her, but of course, none of it worked. Now I’m completely paranoid about her getting away, especially if I have to leave her with someone. That’s why I’m here, I’m searching for answers.

Running in opposite direction doesn't work. Dog took off at a gallop today, crossed busy highway. Complete chaos. Might have to re-home her. Was out in freezy cold windy downpour 1-1/2 hours trying to get her back home. A neighbor brought her here in their car. More havoc-- dog loves to go bye-bye & now has a huge chaos-generating incentive to run off again. To get to ride in a stranger's SUV. She's purebred Lab. At my wit's end.
Hi I hope I remember this . Can you help me with a problem? My dog goes into a trance , waging his tail and searching for lights while out in the sun. We try to distract him but he just fixates on the light . I would be most great-full . Thanks Maj Evans
How do you get a suffering dog to come to you. My elderly neighbors dog is in bad shape but she constantly runs away from us so we cant catch her to take her for medical help. I have tried treats and submission but she takes off before i can get close enough to leash her. Please help!
Great advice here! I’m guessing from your comment that we shouldn’t rely on this as a rule that it’s not advisable for me to “practice” this with Win in the backyard when he doesn’t respond to a recall? Is it appropriate to use at all when he doesn’t respond or is running away from me in a safe environment? Thank you for this video and all the others.
When your dog is in a playful mood and you're calling him to come. And instead of coming, he's running away from you Is this the appropriate method to use as well. Anytime hes in a playing myou. Can't get him to come to you who wants to take off running
I naturally did similar. You have to simply be smarter than the dog. Try and read their chemistry. If you jump, run, or lunge at them, they’re obviously going to run. So like this woman is saying, try to entice them instead. I literally just got back from catching my runaway pup because my genius of a step dad let him loose at 6 months old…
I just tried it and my dog looked then ran the other way. I came in house with gate open hoping she'll decide to come back but I'm one block from a busy major street😢
We are so sorry to hear that. You could try playing this game in times of non-emergency to help the dog understand the patterns. We hope your pup came back and is okay.
My dog, I can’t get my dog to come in the house I let him out in he already runs around like a fool. I tried, turning around and whistling and running in the door and he won’t come in.
How can I get my deaf dog ??? When he does get loose he runs aimlessly w/o ever looking up n he runs as far from us as possible. It's the most horrible feeling ever for pyr whole family ...
Hello, i brought a dog home 6 months old. Tied her up for 2 days then she left into the woods..only comes to eat, when she sees me she runs away into.the woods theough the trees.. I live in a farm. What can i do to catch her..she is an antolian sheperd mix with catahoula.
You shouldn't tie up a dog. That's so cruel. A dog that is tied up can't escape from predators rather real or imagined. It increases fear and anxiety, especially if you leave them like that alone.
Your dog probably fears you at this point. It's going to be a long battle to gain her trust again. Start with hand feeding to regain trust. Play with her and spend time with her. She's not going to trust you if you only provide a bowl of food and water but otherwise try to tie her up and leave her alone. Bring her inside.
Hi @Lauren Yew this one is a video for TH-cam so not in the podcast index. Thank you so much for following us on Castro and here on TH-cam, we're so glad you are part of our community!
I often allow my dog off the leash in the park and she is a golden retriever that knows where people leave their cat food and goes away from my and eats it. She will not come back when searching for food no matter what I do. Also, she is ravenous and finds the smallest morcal of food on the ground and I fear she will eat something that is harmful. I don't know what to do. I feel guilty if she does not run a few times a day. I made the mistake of yelling at her when she finally came today, because this time she went out of site in the park...I've obviously screwed up my dog by yelling at her when she came back this time but now that spring is here, she is out of control for some reason. What do I do? I am lost and fearful she will not get the needed running time a few times a day... HELP!
Hi Gary, Susan has a great game for impulse control that you can start playing at home today, and it's free. Here's the link for you: dogsthat.com/y/iycsummit Here's a wonderful playlist for teaching dogs to listen at a distance as well: th-cam.com/video/MHMzbxNElPs/w-d-xo.html
And what do you do when you are disabled and not able to run around squealing? She is just outside and will not come in the door. I've trained and trained...to come, sit. Staying has not been her strong point as a young puppy yet. She is an excitable and stubborn 4 month old Boston Terrier. Boy do we have our hands full! And she bites us. My husband will not get on board with all the training videos that I've watched and tried to follow since day one. So I told him, it's your dog then. Do what you want. But I'm home alone with her and not able to run around the yard to try to catch her. I guess she will just have to stay out until he gets home in about 5 hours. So frustrated after cleaning up pee and poo off the floors.
Why did you both get a dog in the first place? Dog requires work. You should consider to give him to a loving family. Every dog race as their character and energy level. It should ALWAYS be considered BEFORE adopting a dog. Boston Terrier have very high levels of energy and needs daily long walks and play time.
@@nathaliej.6824 That is what my husband wanted and we do love her very much. She has become much more manageable as she's grown up. My husband puts her to bed in his room...doors are open if she wants to get down. But she waits on him every time. I was not going to get another dog. I felt like my days of being able to take care or live long enough to keep one were over. His arms and heart were yearning to be filled, so that is what we did. He takes very good care of her and she is so attached to him. She loves me too, but her daddy is the love of her life. We tried for months to find a small older dog to adopt from the shelters in the area...all I've ever had were rescues. But none were to be found but one that I fell instantly in love with, then was told when we went to check out that he was already spoken for. I don't care for your attitude, but you don't know us. So I forgive you.

Huskies are a very wild and independent breed. She needs to run and be outside most of the time. Not a dog for city life. Give her to a ranch.
Brilliant ty. Did you say your dogs name is Decaf? Greatest name ever😂❤
Susan did a podcast on Thresholds that includes a game that will be super helpful for you: th-cam.com/video/RxJg7smQ6nM/w-d-xo.html
While you're working on that, make sure you do your best to manage the situation, minimizing the opportunities for unwanted rehearsals.

We'd love for you to give these a try and let us know how the training is going 🐾(Elena ~ DogsThat Team)
We're so sorry you had to experience that, it must have been so stressful! Susan's Recallers program is great game based training that results in an amazing relationship with your dog with the by-product of a fast, reliable recall. If you'd like to try her way of training dogs, we have a brand new free series that's starting today: doggyflix.com/yt/season-of-nuance
We'd love for you to join in the fun! 🐾
Hi
I hope I remember this .
Oh my god thank you 👍
Great advice here!
Hi Katherine, it's for emergency use! Keep building value for a recall no matter where, no matter what (Sharon)
@@DogsThat thank you. That’s what I thought!
I literally just got back from catching my runaway pup because my genius of a step dad let him loose at 6 months old…
Would this work do u think?
My two dogs ran away from me today am so sad i miss him 😢 😢😢😢
been try8int to train my shihtzu to recall even within her own yard and home...she is no 11 months and isnt any closer to obeying
My dog didn’t look back at me - now what?
My dog looked at me and didnt even chase. Hes fed up with my bs 100%
My four month old puppy is deaf. What do I do if he runs away from me? It’s my worst fear!
What do I do if my dog is scared of the sound of cars
Hi! Here's help for fearful dogs: th-cam.com/video/1baRrsgipII/w-d-xo.html
What about if your dog is chasing a cat ? Is it the same technic ? Or do you have another one ? Thank you
Hi @Monique Mona Migneault, we have another video all about chasing, here's where you can watch - th-cam.com/video/Z9hXKLCK0Cg/w-d-xo.html

The dog attacked my wife an bit her in the face
Nah! This ain't working for my Beagle.. If you'll do that, he's not stopping..😅
Same with our rescue beagle. She’s bolted twice and didn’t stop until she was several blocks away.
How to put collar and leash on my dog as he runs away
Hi! Susan's podcast on conditioned responses will help you and your dog: th-cam.com/video/s5m7nZCBJQ8/w-d-xo.html
Happy training!
Has this been uploaded to your Shaped by Dog podcast? I use Castro and I don’t see these episodes. Thanks!
Hi @Lauren Yew this one is a video for TH-cam so not in the podcast index. Thank you so much for following us on Castro and here on TH-cam, we're so glad you are part of our community!
But I live in a society and everyone gonna think that I'm gone mad
Here's the link for you: dogsthat.com/y/iycsummit
Here's a wonderful playlist for teaching dogs to listen at a distance as well: th-cam.com/video/MHMzbxNElPs/w-d-xo.html
stop pop and roll works when my dog stops next to deadly Australian tiger snakes
