The COVID-19 pandemic substantially disrupted the Columbia Big Band. The group had to cancel a planned concert for March 14, 2020, as the world shut down the day after the dress rehearsal for the gig. A few remote-recording projects followed, but the band only managed to come together irregularly for the first time in an outdoor space in June 2021. The following months saw membership changes, rehearsal-location changes, and another cancelled concert in the January 2022 Delta surge.
After nearly three years, the band finally returns to the stage at River Hill High School to perform a setlist of standards, old favorites of the band, and some very new repertoire for an enthusiastic crowd.
The 1931 standard “All Of Me” by Marks & Simons has enjoyed a longstanding entry in the canon of vocal jazz standards, with successful recordings stretching from the first popular 1931 recording by Belle Baker up through entries by Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, and Louis Armstrong. In a strange twist, Willie Nelson recorded a version in 1978 that reached the top-ten of the Country charts, which served to cement its 2000 entry into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
