Royal Enfield how to tell an Indian Bullet from a British one.

  • If a Bullet has the big bolt running through the frame above the gearbox, it's an Indian one, no matter what a seller might try to say. Poor film quality, but if it stops one person getting ripped off it will be worth it.

    I had a 1988 Indian bullet for many years and was informed by the owners club that having indicators is the first and most obvious sign that it is made in India.

    Thank you India for keeping the legacy of Enfield still alive now about the bolt it was made in India for stronger frame as the the British frames were breaking after years of usage. Nevertheless the grey market is also developing so called British frames you will not be able to make out my advice to the buyer if they want genuine english stuff then go for flying flea, meteor constellation which are available for sale in India.

    Another big give away, is that all the Indian machines were fitted with the earlier type of frame. In the 1950s Redditch shipped all the jigs to Indian when they upgraded their frames. All the British bikes had the new frame from the late fifties, whether it was a twin cylinder Interceptor or a single cylinder Bullett. So if you are offered a 1965 Bullet that is claimed to be British, it will have the new type of frame, if it has the old type, as all the bikes in this video had, it's either an early fifties British bullett or a later Indian one. Also the unit construction singles had a frame that looked identical to the new type of frame, though smaller.

    hi paul have a word with Tom Bray dating officer from royal enfield owners club , uk factory ledgers show bikes with g2 engine and frame numbers being supplied from the uk factory up untill august 1968 , ive imported many old g and g2 models from india ,although very unusual to find one that is all original as indian people tended to constantly update there bikes every few years with new guards, wheels , tank, etc , the switch from round tube frame came about on frames in 1959 on export machines ,although for 59 its self there was a round frame all welded {no castings} frame made this was followed by the bolt up frame ,seeing how many round framed bikes ive seen in india that have been welded at that point i would suggest the bolt up frames to have been introduced because they are stronger , fakes are made in india i have seen frames being restamped with g2 numbers ,but i have also seen many genuine bikes stamped g2 with bolt up frames ,no one really knows if the all welded bolt up frames where actually made in india or the uk , the engines ,wheels and gearboxes and some other parts certainly where from the uk and the g2 frame numbers are definatly recorded in the comprehensive factory ledgers as being sent to madras from redditch {madras motors acted as import agent } up untill august 1968 , the slow change from english to indian came about over many years with the last component being supplied from the uk in 1981 {the alloy conrod was being supplied untill then by matt holders company who then owned the bulk of the royal enfield stock and name} my personal opinion is that the bolt up frames where actually made in india as it would have been relatively simple for the indian agent to have these made and that they where then stamped with the engine number supplied on the british made engine ,hence matching numbers on indian bullets , someone somewhere must know what really happened and given the interest in enfields in both uk and especialy india im sure someone who worked at enfields must know what happened,

      Hi Dean, Tom Bray saw this video and thanked me for making it. The frames with the big bolt are all from India. I wouldn't touch a bike with more than one set of numbers stamped on it - certainly on the frame, but each to their own.

    • @deanhoare8789
      @deanhoare8789 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      all the indian1960s models have more than one frame number the EI number was stamped by the indian factory {enfield india}, i just dont understand why the english factory records show g2 bolt up frames frames being exported to madras as late as 1968 ,

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      British RE frames changed shape in 1956, to a shape not found on Indian machines. Any frames sent to India of the earlier shape must have pre dated these later ones, which were used to the end by Redditch. I think Redditch were too busy going down the pan by 1968 to worry about reworking an earlier frame design for India by putting the big bolt in. I have also read [but cannot confirm] that Velocette were making the frames for R.E. Redditch from 1956 onwards, ie Redditch were not making their own frames by then - but please check on this last remark before taking it as set in stone ! All that said, there are often numerous Indian Bullets being offered for sale as 'British', when they clearly are not and this is what I am trying to illustrate with this video.

    • @deanhoare8789
      @deanhoare8789 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      modern enfields have a credit card style registration document but the older ones from the 50s and 60s used a paper booklet type very similar to the type used in the uk back then, ive seen hundred of these over the years from states all over india and ive seen g2 models registered as late as 1973 with bolt up frames , some rusty old wrecks ive found in hedgerows are clearly stamped g2 as well as their EI number ,they cant all be fakes , somebody must know if these frames where made in india or imported as the redditch factory records would suggest ,i think a lot of people out there would like to know for there own curiosity

      The Indian bikes are ok, I have two - one features in this clip, but they are just not as well made as the British ones and some people try to make a fast buck by passing off a more recent Indian machine as an older and more valuable, British one. If I can help only one person avoid being ripped off, I will be happy with that.

      @@paulhenshaw4514 I see that Paul, and more power to your elbow. I just question the validity of the 'British is best' attitude. Hi Matt, what really gets me wound up is when someone is trying to sell what is basically just another old Indian Bullet as some sort of 'special order' machine from Redditch, usually from after Bullet production in the U.K. ceased, when it clearly isn't and they bleat on with all sorts of made up nonsense to try and justify their B.S. and vastly inflated asking prices. It is nothing short of robbery and if I can help in any way to stop it, I am more than happy to oblige!

      There might be a huge difference because British Made ones are older because they stopped their production in 70s
      And its not a problem with India , Everywhere in the world people try to scam on Old antiques its just how the industry is , You Have to Be careful while purchasing and no one forcing you to buy one either.
