Excellent Rant. I, too, have been on the receiving end of this type of lazy local rag rubbish. I was stationary at a red traffic signal and according to Brighton Argus, I collided with a car. By inference, I must have reversed into the car.
It is more pleasing for the non motorcycling majority to see us as in the wrong, and probably sells more rags as a result. Take care

A story from 18 May 1982, I was riding a blue 1979 Honda XL185 along Upwell st towards Brightside lane. I was behind an artic approaching the railway bridge, he stopped then began reversing, my front wheel was jammed under the rear bumper of the trailer. I jumped off and ran to the cab to ask him to stop. I don’t know why we didn’t exchange insurance maybe I was just glad not to be squashed. He drove off and I somehow rode back home, only half a mile but the longest wheelie I have ever done. I know it was this date because I spent the next day,my birthday, finding a wheel (£5) in the breakers and fitting it.

Paul, you're preaching to the converted. I don't expect anyone who doesn't ride a bike will be watching your channel.
I really enjoy watching your work and methodical troubleshooting. The more complex the problems the more I enjoy watching you solve them.
I was especially interested in the episide where you lighten and balance the crank wheels.

When I’m on my bike, I NEVER trust what I THINK an auto driver is going to do…I let them “do their thing” then I go on my way. A contest between me and an auto….the auto will ALWAYS win…

You are absolutely right and most of us have been in similar incidents. ( I was taken out by a driver who swerved acrross the road to avoid a pheasant that "looked like it was going to walk into the road" ) And, as ever, there is great seal of anti motorcyclist claptrap out there. However, it's a bit deeper. Journalists know nothing, but how to write a 'story' and a headline that will capture the attention of the public and thereby sell newspapers. ( or sell advertising space of TV). What journalsts don't know they will make up to suit the tastes and opinions of their readership.

My dad rode Harleys and Indians in the 40’s and 50’s. He told me of a time when he was riding through the coal camp near his home when a large truck with dual rear wheels suddenly pulled out in front of him. He had no time to react aside from grabbing the brakes and falling with the bike. He and the bike slid under the truck, struck the rear tires, and bounced back out onto the road. While he was trying to get to his feet and compose himself, an elderly lady sitting on her front porch yelled “that’ll teach him”. I’m afraid non riders typically have the attitude that merely riding a motorcycle means you’re anti social and don’t care about your personal safety.

100% correct! Years ago I was hit while stationary by a lorry resulting in over a year in hospital, when it went to court for compensation the first question the opposition barrister asked was why had I recently changed my bike to a much larger one than I had previously, trying to suggest I was a speed power hungry rider( I was stopped at lights when the lorry hit me 🤷🏻‍♂️)

  • @roythearcher

I too can relate to this as when, back in the day, (around 1991 or so,) I had a similar experience where I had to brake for a car which had come out of a side turning on a wet road in central London. While it would not otherwise have been a major problem to stop before I made contact with the car on a dry road, the road was wet, it was evening, the driver didnt even look to see if the road was clear before pulling out and there was an invisible patch of diesel masked by the rain on the section of road I was on. I lightly pulled on the front brake to slow for this car when without any warning at all the front wheel locked on the diesel, tucked under and before i even knew what was going on I was sliding up the road followed by the bike towards the now stationary car which had stopped half way across the road. After I'd come to a stop the car just drove off leaving me there in a heap in front of my now unridable bike!
I did manage to get the registration number of the car but as in your case, because I had not made any contact with the other vehicle there was nothing the police would do about it.
The worse thing was that if that car had just kept going instead of stopping it would have been a close call but nothing else would have happened!
Thank goodness for dash and helmet cams I say!

On the opposite side, the nutters were out this morning! The stereotypical Sunday morning pocket rocket, Ninja turtle dressed group… Overtaking in all the wrong places and on some very scary blind bend bad positioning. Please note, I’ve probably done more miles on bikes than any of them, worked on more bikes than them…. I’m not a couch potato, just someone who was waiting this morning for the aftermath of disaster that could have unfolded. Back to your story Paul, I once got knocked off my bike when only 17. The police came along and said to the driver, do you want to take it further… I said it was his fault!! We both just walked away. I ended up having to fit a new seat lock, indicator, clutch lever and some painting. I was young and naive, walking away never happened again. I once saw a lad get knocked off. I helped him up and his bike. The driver asked if he was okay and the boy said yes and they started to separate. I looked at his bike and said hang on…. Get his details as there’s a chunk of money to be spent fixing that.

Bravo! I absolutely agree with you. When I was learning to ride, back in the day, I remember seeing an official statistic that said 70% of accidents involving motorcycles are caused by car drivers. Despite that figure, one of our national newspapers was running a campaign at the time to "ban the killer motorbike". Around that time, a friend of mine received "life-changing" injuries when riding around a bend in a built-up area and meeting a speeding car coming around the bend on the wrong side of the road. I share your gear-grinding feelings. The only riding accident I've had 🤞 occurred when I was following a car at a reasonable distance approaching a zebra crossing. The driver slammed on the brakes without moving over. He was not attempting to stop at the crossing (as I thought) but wanted to talk to a friend on the pavement about 20-30 yards short of the crossing. Even so, I had got the bike downing to walking speed by the time I hit his rear bumper and my pillion passenger slid forward, pushing me into the petrol tank.

Yes, there were comments on social media in the aftermath of the accident, must be the bikers fault , on the wrong side of the road etc. As has been mentioned a Porsche driver has been charged in relation to it. It would be wrong to guess at what was actually happening at the time & in due course, the evidence will be presented.

    Hello everyone.
Accidents like this are bad. Just what do you want to do? The police only reach the scene of the accident later, if they are called at all, before all traces have been removed. If there are no witnesses or no one claims to have seen anything, what the other person involved in the accident says must be accepted if you are no longer in a position to make a statement yourself. Even if there had been a collision, it would be very difficult to determine whether the car was reversing or the motorcyclist was rear-ending. Without witnesses, it's a matter of testimony against testimony. If it wasn't your fault, it's obviously frustrating. What is in the newspaper is what someone wrote, not what actually happened. Unfortunately that's how it is. Wherever people act, mistakes happen, you always have to keep that in mind and you have to be prepared for it. When I ride my motorcycle, I try not only to think for myself, but also for others. But if you come around a curve and someone is reversing there, you have no chance. That's why it's forbidden under the German StVO. The person returning has special duties of care. But if there are no witnesses...
Motorcyclists often have a bad situation. Why is that? Because of the few who don't follow any rules, get on people's alarm clocks with exhausts that are too loud and drive too fast and dangerously. The many motorcyclists who are decent suffer from this.

    • @carolynmarshall3598
      @carolynmarshall3598 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Before the Porsche was mentioned, we had only drone shots of the accident, which clearly show a very high speed impact occurred (judging from the damage to the car), and that the car spun out only a short distance. One might assume the car was not at an excessive speed therefore. The positioning seems to indicate the M/C was on the wrong side of the road. I await reports of the Porsche driver being the cause of this.

Unconscious Bias, Motorcyclists are frequently victims of bad press. Certainly there are a few who behave in a manner which reinforces that prejudice. Noisy exhausts, wheelies in urban traffic, a bad attitude and a general lack of courtesy. Most of us want to go about our riding in peace and don't want to encounter idiots on or in vehicles. Unfortunately due to the ever increasing number of vehicles on our roads the chances of this is increasing.

Here in the states, similar attitudes exist but the main stream news media is 1,000 times worse in telling the truth when it comes to politics. American media is akin to Pravda. In your incident, if the truth was told, it may have been a way to alert drivers about motorcycles but they chose to get ratings over truth.

A bit different here I'd say.
I got rear ended once a couple of years ago and the emergency response was swift and large.
No judgement and fair to both sides.
But I will say there is still a segment of the population that thinks we're quite evil.

So much in fact i carmt help but swerve if i so much as see one move when there stopped at a junction! But ive had accidents in cars an when the police see ive got full motorcycle licence they have said, it must of been my fault right in front of me even when the other driver has admitted fault. I suffered a simuler "Off", which was put down as "My fault", but I had the local paper correct this to induled the fact that I had been hit by a sheep bolting across the road within an area classed as "Open Grazing". or "Common land".

As in and again as the current law states.
