      These reviews go well with The Golden Bolt's reviews, when you watch both of them you get a really comprehensive retrospective of the Ratchet and Clank games. I hated Deadlocked so much, but when both of you went through it, it wasn't as bad as I thought it was and the game had a lot more nuance.

    One thing you forgot to mention is that there are secret armor combinations you can find. Like equipping "Wildfire" boots, body, gloves togheter with the "Sludge Mk. 9" helmet gives you the "Wildburst" armor set effect. In total there are 6 secret armor combinations. Pretty neat! The armor system is actually a great experiment that i'm sad they did not improve on in later games.

    I think you're using the Concussion Gun wrong, as I've been able to deal more damage point blank range rather than the further distances you demonstrated in your footage. the only real "hint" to it is that it's in the name, *Concussion*, as in a mild blow to the head, so it would make sense that closer blasts would deal more damage than farther away.

    One thing I've always thought of is how a lot of elements in Size Matters seem to just be Tools of Destruction, but worse. Things like the attempt at a more cinematic story, the Lacerator being a slow-fire pistol similar to the Combustor, the Hive Mine being just a worse version of the Nano-Swarmers, the Giant Clank space segments are pretty similar to the Tools space sections, etc. It makes me wonder if the High Impact guys got to see an early build of Tools of Destruction at some point in 2006 or early 2007 and drew inspiration from it. Or maybe it was the other way around and Insomniac saw Size Matters and decided that they could do better. Or maybe it's just a complete coincidence and insect turrets truly were the next evolution of Ratchet gameplay in 2007. Still, it's interesting to think about.

    Laser at max level protects you from damage from in front of you, especially Otto's wave attacks. You could just keep shooting and buy laser ammo with the pda when needed. No other weapons needed. I learned it the hard way after dying for an entire month before beating him

    Guess what, it sucks even more on new game+. The enemies fucktouple in damage and sponginess. You might be able to do slightly better by grinding up Ratchet's weapons. But you know what doesn't rank up? Giant clank. So the space flight sections just get harder, and harder until it's not physically possible to defeat the dreadnaught before it scratches you to death. And using the super laser means you have to hold still and aim the fucker, so you eat 400 homing missiles and die. Dogshit game design.

    I have had my PSP since I was 9. It's been 11 years and I STILL haven't beaten this game - just like you up until this review. I love the series; played most of the entries and the PS2 trilogy are probably my favourite games from that console - that being said, I know that Size Matters is bad, i knew it even before your review, but... I still want to do that! I remember I gave up even before the final boss; on the planet where you fight the Ratchet clones. I have the game installed on my Vita and I feel like I have to give it a go, I just can't leave the only entry in the series unfinished. I replayed this game as part of my series marathon leading up to “Rift Apart,” which I still haven’t played yet. I don’t dislike this game at all, but I have started to take note of its issues, especially when I decided to complete this game 100%. It’s the most tedious due to having to go through two Challenge Mode playthroughs just to get all of the armor sets.
    Upgrading every single weapon is also a chore, not just because of how weak they are, but because it took me a few playthroughs to achieve it. I discovered that there are two specific enemies in the last world that give you a heckton of XP, which meant leaving it, then coming back to defeat them again.
    “Size Matters” is definitely one of the weaker games in the series due to its lack of polish. It’s playable enough, I guess.

  • @kuzidas4213
    @kuzidas4213 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I’m a year late here but really all you need to kill Otto is the shock rocket and the static barrier.
    If you only use the shock rocket all ammo drops will give you rocket ammo. Don’t even bother getting extra damage in with the weaker guns because then you have a chance to pick up ammo for them instead of rockets, lowering your damage in the long run.
    But I played on ps2 where the laser tracer was bugged and kinda sucked.
    Overall yeah this game is definitely one of the Ratchet and Clank games

      Anyway the game is just awesome, soundtrack is a certified banger full circle, great intro level, cool secrets, customizable armor and when certain mismatches are done you get a combination effect, like the Fire bomb armor. The controls are tight and fast, sure the u turn is annoying but it's never used in combat anyway since you strafe.
      The hoverboard sections are hard but you just need to get better as a player to beat them, like for example if you save the boost till the end of the 2nd race, polarizer, you can cheese the entire last bit of the race and take a massive shortcut.

The movement feels labored and devoid of momentum, the weapons lack impact and visual flair, the writing is an all-time low, the villains are cardboard cutouts... The only thing I remember enjoying in this game was the mix-and-match armor system and even that was marred by the fact that some armor pieces are locked behind insanely poorly balanced challenges.

    I'm just gonna say this is a skill issue on your part. I played this game when I was a kid on my psp and I have no memories of it being that hard. Challenging for sure but I played it through multiple times and enjoyed it thoroughly. Was my first and only ratchet and clank game and I loved it

      True. As a kid, I was stingy with my bolts and didn’t buy anything unless it was necessary.
      I didn’t even know some of the weapons he bought were in the game. 😅

    I was playing this game on ps2 last week. I had bought this and Secret agent clank back in 2012 but never finished either one of them. This year I had gone back to replay all of the R&c ps2 games on original hardware. They are some of my favorite games in my collection.
    Anyway, I was determined to finish this one since I never had before, but (as you mention in your video) the terrible feel of the weapons and janky feeling movement made it impossible at points. I ended up giving up at the first technomite world (around 5th planet in) because I just could not beat that stupud drop ship boss. (For context I was able to get through max difficulty deadlock relatively easily a few weeks prior). At this point I don't think its worth trying to get past the rough parts to finish this game.
    Glad to hear I am not the only one that feels this way.

    17:58 The scenes in Vox's office in Deadlocked are actually pre-rendered, so they still technically fit the rule of thumb from those first four games. I get where you're coming from, though - rather than "breaking from reality", they involve real, moment-to-moment character interactions that serve directly to progress the story instead of just providing a background/set-up, so they don't necessarily seem to fit the tone of the majority of the pre-rendered scenes in those games.

    I tried playing this game again on Challenge Mode and I got to a certain point where I was like "I'm done.". I really tried to get into it and finish the whole game at least once, but after trying again, I have no current plans to. I first played this about a year after it came out and I was about 14 and I could tell even then that something felt off about the game. Definitely one of my least favorite R&C games

    The things I remember the most from playing it way back then are the opening level's music, the Blitzer/Concussion Gun sucking ass, the nightmare Ratchet has in the middle of the game and me getting stuck in the level in Clank's head because I had no bolts left.

    Dang I actually think the magma cannon was the BEST shotgun in R&C ever! I remember occasionally it would send some of its streams way to the side to hit enemies there and would sometimes knock enemies on their butts and especially with freeze added to it. Def agree the concussion gun is the worst ever though

    I had to turn off the autosave to stop running outta bolts for tries on the final boss, especially on challenge mode. On challenge mode I basically decided "fuck it I will use PDA to grab enough bolts to refill shield/ammo". At least challenge mode helps with the bolt issue by giving you ways to get up to 20x multiplier.

  • @BGpilot419

    This was my first game on PSP, mostly since it came with the used one I ordered off amazon (along with a green lantern poster for some reason) and while I enjoyed it at the time, even as a kid I noticed just how much punishment the enemies were taking in this game. I really wish customizable armor sets had been a thing that returned in later games since I like that setup way more than just having straight upgrades and it reminds me of Megaman X8 so that's another bonus.

    I don't know how... But i actually beat this game a handful of times as a kid. I then came back to it recently, beat it after like a month, and got the R.Y.N.O. It was a pain, but i still love it. It was my introduction to ratchet, and beating is gives me so much pride, given it's the Dark souls of these games.
    Update: booted it up again and realized the R.Y.N.O. isn't the overpowered, game breaking weapon it should be... And then i realized. YOU HAVE TO UPGRADE IT. This is the first ratchet game I've seen that asks you to upgrade the R.Y.N.O instead of it already being the all-powerful rocket launcher it is. The Irony is, in order to take it from level 3 to finally level 4, you need to get 999000 experience points. On top of the Experience you've already gotten. Yup, you need just as many experience points as it needed bolts to purchase in order to make it the game breaking weapon it is. Incredible really.

    • @LasagaMan
      @LasagaMan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      RaC3 also had you upgrade it's R.Y.N.O to make it as good as it should be, execpt it gets even worse by turning it into a screen nuke at V5, which makes it worthless on the bosses as it deals far less damage than it's lower level counterparts as the missiles could do far more damage at once instead of the screen nuke would.

    I got this game on PS2 when it was relatively new back in 2009 and it wasn't that bad granted it might be because my patience is higher than average, but now after seeing this re-review I think I was giving it too much credit. Being a R&C must've made me overlook it's apparent flaws plus my taste in games wasn't near refined as it is now. Also, the conclusion to this video just got you a new sub man! This game was my first contact with Ratchet & Clank. To be more precise, when I was a kid, I saw one of my cousins playing it on his PSP. I remember sawing big Clank flying in space, and the Luna fight (with the corn field). When I saw Luna I though she was nice, then she acted evil and I though there was a good one and a bad one (I was a dumb child), but it was actuallly the same small girl.

    I'd say the scaling of the weapons and the short length of the experience weren't well thought out. It does say a lot for the story/tone they went from kid to teen with the edge factor to kid audience again but much worse in just 2 yeats and two entries even if OG and start of Future to just make it the Sony kids audience games which makes sense but man sucks with how bad they treat the characters sometimes. How without it being cinematic they make better stories and tone and the cinematic ones kind of keep it but other times don't. Making them not edgy obviously makes sense but even still the aspects they do have just feel so forced and awkward. Armours yes are badly scaled, and by the time you collect them they are useless so yeah even if wanting to customise its pointless and best to go off protection then abilities. The grindrails are good, not Scaler Shapeshifting Chameleon good but still better than others in the series. Clank arenas and Giant Clank sections should be good but yeah they aren't if you can't grind weapons and repeating particular ones will clearly be the better option or just replaying levels over and over like getting the RYNO at 99990000 is ridiculous. I have beaten the game on PSP to do that and skill points/armour on a 3rd playthrough but never again and not beat Secret Agent Clank for its similar weapon leveling issues in challenge mode and repeating levels as I don't want to keeping replaying it 3 or more times naturally to level hem up. If even for a trophy I would not bother to get the RYNO in these games. I agree yes the boss is the worst part, whatever endgame weapons obtained or not used.
