I'm no reverse engineer (except for not being an engineer), but from listening to the dev commentaries I know that they had a weird sort of scripting language on 2 and 3 and they actually had to use enemies to make events happen. I don't know about rac 1, but even for that reason, there's a high likelihood that 2 and 3 would be horrendous to decompile and reverse-engineer.
@@Anteksanteri jak and daxter’s decompilation was a special case as ND used a custom programming language called GOAL, people managed to figure out some patterns with it and found out how to basically straight translate it The rac games however use c/c++, which require hand translation, basically, once people think it’s feasible, it’ll take a lot of time to decompile

Fun fact randomizers for most games have a Logic/No Logic option which let's a casual audience enjoy them without worry of soft lock or use of Speedrun glitches to complete the run making them a fun way to enjoy your favorite games again. It's a good way to get addicted for possibly months or just a good run :)
I don't really have any experience with R&C period, but for what it's worth, that idea of finding a new appreciation for a game's structure and design/thought process is one of the reasons I love Zelda randomizers so much, particularly Ocarina of Time's. I had a healthy respect for OoT beforehand, of course, but playing rando after rando ended making me love and appreciate it way, way more than I ever expected, and it really showed me how different it is from later games. Like, here's an example. In Wind Waker's forest dungeon, there's a room with a thorn-maze and the thorns only pop up when you get close. You're supposed to navigate it, grab a bomb flower, toss it past the thorns to blow up a wooden barrier, and then go all the way around to get the chest behind said barrier. But during a recent randomizer run, I had Fire Arrows with me, and thought "oh, hey! why don't I just use those and cut out the middleman"? So I pulled out my bow and launched a fire arrow at the wooden barrier... only for the arrow to bounce off of literally nothing. It turns out that the maze is just made of invisible walls, and the thorns are just for visual indication. This is a really small thing, and you'd never realize it normally since you can't get Fire Arrows until way later, but it highlights how the devs were focused on making sure you solved puzzles the way they intended. Compare the Master Quest version of OoT's Water Temple. There's some rooms in that where you have to light multiple torches at once to unlock doors or grates. At that point in the game, your only source of fire on-demand is Din's Fire, and thus it's the obvious solution to those puzzles. However, during a randomizer run, Din's Fire was out of reach, and so I was forced to head into the MQ Water Temple with just Fire Arrows. I had to light each torch individually, while also going fast enough to hit them all before any one of 'em fizzled out. It's a bit annoying, but certainly doable. Again, it's a really small thing, but it highlights the difference in mindset. In OoT, those torches are simply objects in the dungeon, and there's nothing stopping you from using a different method to light them all up. The devs never intended it (beating the Water Temple is how you unlock Fire Arrows in the first place), but when put into a randomizer situation, it highlights how malleable and open-ended OoT's design is.
This is fantastic; RC1 was already my favorite in the series, but, if I go through with installing this and trying it out, I'm sure my enjoyment will reach even greater levels, if it's even possible. As usual, great job on the video!

Trust me, Ratchet and Clank is honestly the most replayable game ever made. Right now, I have no idea why, I'm literally having this ridiculous R&C nostalgia burst, I'm literally going to get a new PS3 just to play them, as my PS2 either isn't compatible with my TV, or it doesn't work, who knows. I know the HD collection on the PS3 isn't great, but it's definitely the easiest way to play it, and it's all three games in one anyway, simple enough. God I love these games
Glad you rekindled your Ratchet love! I just got an upscaler to use on an actual ps2 so I dont have the HD glitches and Im pumped to see it as good as it used to be (hopefully better) and on a bigger screen :)
That was exactly what I'd submitted and pushed for with Rift Apart, when Insomniac put out their little "submit an update idea/request" form. After the hotfix to allow for a true wrench-only run, I was hoping there was a shot in the dark that somebody would go in on their own and turn that arena parameter into a gamewide setting for Challenge Mode - maybe next time!
26:00 Baby expirience his first randomizer. It is so different, if you play a randomizer for a Game you like, or if you play one, for the game you LOVE!
This was a great look into the game. I'm always fascinated by randomizers and honestly wish that games started having them built in from the get-go without fans having to force one in. Granted I realize it would probably inflate the scope of game design to a ridiculous degree, but I feel like it would help give developers either a good look at their games design in the "intended" way, or just give a fun way to play their game. It FEELS like it would be a simple thing, but then be a surprise of "oh no this is massive". Also for the PSP Ratchet, I will always say I feel like Size Matters' best contribution is how it went about armor. Honestly I wish it was in more of the mainline games, we're close to it in Rift Apart, but it's only cosmetic and is only 3 slots (helmet, chest (which is combo-ed with gloves), & boots) whereas in Size Matters it's 4 (helmet, body, gloves, & boots), and each armor piece adds a neat passive status effect to your loadout. Although you need specific combos of armor to get some effects rather than the effects being a result of whatever piece you have on, not sure if that's a good or bad thing. I can see the reason behind it, but I feel like it should be the case of you get a certain kind of bonus no matter what armor piece you have on. Granted you could have the best of both worlds by comboing the two iterations where you can have a certain armor piece set as your cosmetic look while you can have the function of another.
Really interesting video. I've just finished 4 playthroughs of the first game on PS Plus and was just mind numbingly going through by the end, this mod makes it seem so much more interesting. Also, very glad that someone else gets annoyed with the default camera controls. Mad that you have to change them at the start of every play through
Hey i haven't seen many of your videos, but have you ever talked about Ratchet & Clank on PC? Made me think about it even more eith tbis video about the randomizer mod as I would think it would be easier on PC
I remember hearing about this from speedrunners, but never thought much of it, but seeing you're playthrough made me want to play it so bad! I wish it worked with RPCS3, needing a PS3 with custom firmware, connected to a PC, running specifically a PAL version of the game is some arbitrary bullshit. With Jak and Daxter getting a fan made source port on PC now, with Jak II, and Jak 3 on the way, I can only hope and pray that one day some talented fans will be able to port these old games to PC as well. The mods would be insane!
I love how you said that you sound like finding out randomisers exist for the first time but the entire rest of the video is also explaining the point of randomisers like someone who found them for the first time. Yeah baby reinvent that pizza that's what it's all about we stan randomisers in this household.
First game my all time favourite, the fact you can't starve makes it even more fun with the arsenal of weapons you get, each of them has their pros and cons on different encounters. This kinda got lost is the sequels and beyond.
The fact that, as a RaC fan, you can't really feel this 1st experience is very true And that's whhy I'm thinkin about challenges like a nuzlocke for a Pokemon game For RaC 2, I tried a "economic run" Where you can't buy ammo for your weapons (besides Killanoids and Shield Charger, where I considered you can buy 1 ammo (4 for Killanoids and 1 for Shield Charger) per vendor you see in a level, without abusing it That was a very very cool challenge It matches a lot with the spirit of the game And omg, I love it because it forces you to use ALL of your weapons And it forces you to not simply spam your favourite weapons or the best You have to think before using the weapon You have to play with weapons lvlups for ammo And you don't have the "you're missing experience" when you're using lvled up weapons Because you don't care, you need to use ALL WEAPONS because of ammo I highly recommand trying it !
R&C1 is probably the game in the series I've returned to the most because of those differences from the later games. I still really enjoy the later games, I'll even say some of those are better than 1. But I like getting a new weapon and not feeling like I HAVE to use it, even if it sucks or just does not vibe with my playstyle, because otherwise, be it using the Wrench or a weapon that's already fully upgraded, if I don't use a weapon in need of upgrading then you are basically wasting XP. I've seen people occasionally bring up resource management in these games when talking about Bolts and Ammo, but never about XP in the same way. Cleared out the level using your maxed out weapons? Well now the enemies that spawn in during revisits don't give out XP to prevent grinding out your health, but you can't level up that weapon now either. Next level has enemies that are too strong for that fully upgraded weapon to take down without dumping the entire ammunition reserve into it? Should have thought about that on the previous level. I think the only other R&C game to not have this problem, without completely scrapping the "less/no XP on revisits" mechanic, is All4One by making weapon upgrades something you buy with bolts. I like that game but you gotta buy weapon upgrades on a per character basis and you can't share Bolts between characters. This introduces a whole new mess of issues however.
honestly i think it'd be really cool if rac 2 and 3 got mods that made them play like rac 1; no strafing, no leveling, decreased damage curve. rac 1 and deadlocked are some of my favorites to replay because the entirety of your arsenals remain viable throughout the entire game and it'd be fun to play those other 2 games like it.
With regards to the PAL vs NTSC thing, it's my understanding that by the N64/PS1 era, games didn't run slow any more, they just ran at the slightly reduced refresh rates. So while you were now playing at 25/50fps, the game was still running at the right speed. TV hasn't really standardised fully yet though. PAL TV broadcasts are still at 50hz to this day, it's just that all our TVs can also handle NTSC standards too, so we can watch American stuff or plug in consoles without issues.
I laughed a bit in that part in Kerwan where you could buy Magneboots from the vendor for free! Magneboots in the vendor, one of the funniest things I have seen. Great mod!
So lit theyre all free on stream for ps+ members. As a kid, i played each one tens of times through. I think 2 or 4 was my favs, but then i didnt get into the future series, but now i bought rivet and bolts, man this is a great game. Maybe a bit too easy on the most hard difficulty.
I know it's not gonna happend since the R&C "remake" didn't succeed but a TRUE remake of R&C 2 and 3 would be a dream (don't freaking change the dialogues tho). They already have a lot of ennemies/characters done in Rift Apart and the First trilogy wasn't as complex on the level design part as the future trilogy. Gladiator/Deadlocked would be a great remake too as a standalone fun game.
when i was a kid i had an E01 with the replacement ps2 chip... i had a scratch up disc for the first game and thought it was the disc as to how it played
Funny thing, Japan has several different power grids. Some of it is 60 and some of it is 50. But they standardised at least video/TV to be universally 60.
I cannot help but think companies are missing a trick by not embracing the idea of mods, hacks and randomizers on old games. It would really add to the appeal of services like PS Plus Premium or NSO. It would make these things more accessible to a general audience and, because the company write still have control over the mods, they wouldn't necessarily undermine trophy support or any meta game balance. Only obstacle might be objections by certain creators. I think Japan in particular cam be very pinickity about that kind of thing.
PSP video when? Seriously Size Matters is what got me into the series and other Sony games, it blew my mind back then and will always be special for me for this reason
setting everything up for this is a surprisingly painful process and I kind of wish you had explained some of it because wow actually finding info is a pain. tbf, I am purposely avoiding the discord because I am a firm believer that if a discord is necessary you have utterly failed at preservation and documentation. on the other hand, I still haven't even made it that far because modding the PS3 is causing enough problems by itself thanks to the exploit website being down Edit: finally got it all working and while painful, it was absolutely worth it this is so much fun
I want someone to try to incorporate that randomizer into the Archipelago Multiworld system. If you think it's chaotic getting weapons for one game everywhere, imagine if there's two or three other games to get items for as well! Though you would 100% have to emulate the game. There is no way that you'd be able to get that to work on an actual PS3.
I feel like a randomiser would work better on later games, assuming you can adjust the addresses for damage and health variables cause in R&C 1, I tend to use the bomb glove and wrench for 90% of the game anyway, and not even as a challenge but just cause after years of playing the games, I find them to be that game's two most comfortable weapons if oyu know how to use them properly (Ie, using jumps and flips to position ratchet's wrench strikes), I don't think changing the weapon order would substantially alter how I play that game too much, besides getting softlocked on wrench killing helicopters like if there weren't any helicopters or bombships, I'd probably forget that there are other weapons in most playthroughs

After the hotfix to allow for a true wrench-only run, I was hoping there was a shot in the dark that somebody would go in on their own and turn that arena parameter into a gamewide setting for Challenge Mode - maybe next time!
Didn't quite know what I was getting into watching this one, but man that was a super fun watch
Mad that you have to change them at the start of every play through
I spiritually need those versions of Ratchet games with weapons that randomly switch like in the arena challenges. I always wanted this.
I just wish it was possible to do this on an emulator...Because it sounds great
I love how you said that you sound like finding out randomisers exist for the first time but the entire rest of the video is also explaining the point of randomisers like someone who found them for the first time.
Yeah baby reinvent that pizza that's what it's all about we stan randomisers in this household.
First game my all time favourite, the fact you can't starve makes it even more fun with the arsenal of weapons you get, each of them has their pros and cons on different encounters. This kinda got lost is the sequels and beyond.
i can resonate with how easy one can burn out from this massive series such a good series of games
I love that this is getting mor recognition. Bordplate did so good on this mod
This community makes me proud to be a gamer, rac will forever be the goat of platformers
Ratchet and clank is one of my favorite game series ever. Such amazing games
THIS GAME IS WHY I STILL PLAY ON INVERTED! Has turned me into the lefty of the controller world
after replaying all the games in the series, something about the first one keeps me coming back for more playthroughs. This looks fascinating!
Love that single frame of Ty the Tasmanian Tiger lmao
The fact that, as a RaC fan, you can't really feel this 1st experience is very true
And that's whhy I'm thinkin about challenges like a nuzlocke for a Pokemon game
For RaC 2, I tried a "economic run"
Where you can't buy ammo for your weapons (besides Killanoids and Shield Charger, where I considered you can buy 1 ammo (4 for Killanoids and 1 for Shield Charger) per vendor you see in a level, without abusing it
That was a very very cool challenge
It matches a lot with the spirit of the game
And omg, I love it because it forces you to use ALL of your weapons
And it forces you to not simply spam your favourite weapons or the best
You have to think before using the weapon
You have to play with weapons lvlups for ammo
And you don't have the "you're missing experience" when you're using lvled up weapons
Because you don't care, you need to use ALL WEAPONS because of ammo
I highly recommand trying it !
16:02 loved the ty reference
This is super cool. I love randomizers. Hopefully we get one that's not Digital PAL only and supports emulators
Man, I'd love to play this mod, fingers crossed it comes to rpcs3 would be amazing!!
Randomizers have become such popular mods, that you would think developers would add a randomizer mode for completing the main game one time.
this man has one of the most hype intro jingles on youtube.
Great mod!
I love you rac videos they are very intresting and well made I watch them more then one time
Sony dev watching the video like:
I shouldn't approve of this....
But like ratchet 1 mods bruh that lits.
When the world needed him the most, he returned.
What rad way to spend Valentine’s Day .
There's a randomiser for everything nowadays. I'm sure you can make a randomised child if you got with the right person.
18:46 was just brilliant
When we getting a retrospective for the movie?
when i was a kid i had an E01 with the replacement ps2 chip... i had a scratch up disc for the first game and thought it was the disc as to how it played
Devs should make this a new game plus feature after you beat it the first time. Like you can replay it normal or replay it randomized
Funny thing, Japan has several different power grids. Some of it is 60 and some of it is 50. But they standardised at least video/TV to be universally 60.
I always knew a ratchet and clank rougelike could work.
That's why I'm hoping for pc ports. Modding community could do so much
The Rachet ride never ends.
The fabled second Pizza that Pineapple belongs on, so to speak.
MAN i wanna this on my love - ps2 version T_____T
I'm gonna have to do a run of this now, seems great. I hope someone is working on a RAC:GC and UYA randomizers.
PSP video when? Seriously Size Matters is what got me into the series and other Sony games, it blew my mind back then and will always be special for me for this reason
I wonder how difficult it would be to add the standard dual-stick shooter control scheme that ratchet 3 has and ratchet deadlocked has standard.
Yay! More R&C content!
Looks like I have to buy ratchet 1 for the 10th time to play the randomizer. Money well spent
Really wish for an enemy randomizer as well that would be fun
setting everything up for this is a surprisingly painful process and I kind of wish you had explained some of it because wow actually finding info is a pain. tbf, I am purposely avoiding the discord because I am a firm believer that if a discord is necessary you have utterly failed at preservation and documentation. on the other hand, I still haven't even made it that far because modding the PS3 is causing enough problems by itself thanks to the exploit website being down
Edit: finally got it all working and while painful, it was absolutely worth it this is so much fun
Edit: it was a good video
Love this video happy to see some more rac when I thought you were done with it until the next game also lmao alados shoutout
i think the method of reinventing pizza was just to cover it in bertie botts every flavour beans
Now I wanna play R&C again
I feel like a randomiser would work better on later games, assuming you can adjust the addresses for damage and health variables
cause in R&C 1, I tend to use the bomb glove and wrench for 90% of the game anyway, and not even as a challenge but just cause after years of playing the games, I find them to be that game's two most comfortable weapons if oyu know how to use them properly (Ie, using jumps and flips to position ratchet's wrench strikes), I don't think changing the weapon order would substantially alter how I play that game too much, besides getting softlocked on wrench killing helicopters
like if there weren't any helicopters or bombships, I'd probably forget that there are other weapons in most playthroughs
10:58 That was very funny
Great video by the way, that looks like a very fun mod, I whish I could try it out
21:00 This is exactly why the first game is the best Game!
I'm a shorty tea pot, little and stout
cool video yet again GB! now even more people will learn about the randomizer! hopefully sony won't get mad
150.000 bolts for the taunter, modern inflation hit ratchet pretty hard
