    Thought provoking, heartfelt, and true.
How much learning was lost 'civilising' the People?
Being white, I hang my head with shame for we still ignore the errors of our own past while our ancestors pressed the peaceful into sharing our not-knowing.
What have we really learnt? Should we not now learn and educate each other in the being of simplicity? Can we?

    This is what he said:
How long have I known you, Oh Canada? A hundred years? Yes, a hundred years. And many, many ‘seelanum’ more. And today, when you celebrate your hundred years, Oh Canada, I am sad for all the Indian people throughout the land.
I have known you when your forests were mine; when you gave me my meat and my clothing. I have known you in your streams and rivers where your fish flashed and danced in the sun, and those water said come, come and eat of my abundance.’ I have known you in the freedom of the winds. And my spirit, like the winds, once roamed this good land.
Oh Great Spirit! Give me back the courage of the olden chiefs. Let me wrestle with my surroundings. Let me once again live in harmony with my environment. Let me humbly accept this new culture and through it rise up and go on.
I shall grab the instruments of the white man’s success-his education, his skills - and with these new tools -- I shall build my race into the proudest segment of your society.
I shall see our young braves and our chiefs sitting in the house of law and government, ruling and being ruled by the knowledge and freedoms of our great land.

The mother of my father was pure blood. Cherokee. His father was "mutt"...a collection of intermingled tribes forced together on the res after the trail of tears. My mother is of european decent...German, Hungarian. A small bit of native blood in her. I have tried to enbrace the native ideals. It's hard in this society. But, to quote Chief Dan George, "Thank you father for making me a human being."

That would probably be because any person registering who did not have family to verify the were a particular tribe were classified as Cherokee. Guess how many orphaned children were signed in as Cherokee. Between 5000 and 25000.

It's their game, they deal the cards. The game is fixed. They own it. The only way to play is to be it. I'm afraid the wise Chief didn't see this. Our best effort is to not play at all, or as little as possible. Do not cooperate, play only when you have to. Go our own way with our creative strengths and build something new based on the timeless earth-wise cultures. :-)

title is misleading. This is NOT Chief Dan George's speech. It is that and inserted parts of text that he did not say in 1967 and which are being read here by his son Chief Leonard. Change the title.

Is it too late to give back this country to the Natives ? I'm ashamed of my heritage great Chief. I am a white mutant who aches with guilt and shame. What the Europeans and their industrious ways have done to this planet is beyond horrific...It really is. Shame, shame...SHAME. We suck !
