Our children have no problem intermingling with children of other race. It’s the adults. Let’s stay as pure as children and embrace other culture. The least we can do is to give each other that respectable space.
@@vijay20 I am sad to hear because I have come across Chinese adopted by a Indian family. My daughter's best friend in primary school is an Indian from India but was adopted by a Sri Lankan father and a Singaporean Chinese mother. That never stopped their friendship. Her mother has also become my friend. 😊
Have you heard of Paranakan Indians? They are the minority born in Singapore with Indian, Chinese and Malay blood. So, how do you categorise them? They would simply like to be called "Singaporean".
He will be the worst PM for singapore when he support cultural and religious bigotry.Remember Singapore is a red dot in culture and religious self determination . Learn from ur past but pls do not live in the past.
Due to the complexity of the situations; one which we must tread carefully, I really do appreciate Minister Lawrence's answers to the questions brought up, and we as Singaporean must continue to work towards racial harmony. And never take this for granted.
Also racism is usually a result of bad experiences with others. The experiences will always be remembered and be projected to those ethnic group of people who upset them for a long term. So treat and talk to others like how you treat and talk to people of your own race. The issues are made worse by the effects of covid19 whether it is employment (lost job), income, business owners (siginificant reduce in intake or even bankrupt), social distance, the wear of masks everyday, the closing of educational institution, inability to travel overseas, cannot meet loved ones, cannot meet families overseas, etc.
Seriously, take away that race (origins) and only focus on the country Singapore. Don’t be so racist that race must be remembered or honored. Like Ivy said… she is a tiger, half Indian, half Chinese 100% Singaporean. 🙈🙉🙊 🇸🇬💪👍👍👍👍
Really! l am a 65yr old Singaporean from an indian ethnic group. My friends and teachers not once ever made any racists comments then. It is different now.... I have heard of even teachers having made such comments now. I think the population is not comfortable with certain minority groupe being very well to do.... This is my opinion. Though it is a small groupe of people who are racists. Such people should be brought to task.
Like Indians are not racist to non Indians. I have seen a lot of Indians being very rude and discriminatory toward the Chinese and Malays but especially toward the Chinese. You need to undestand that Singapore is a nice country now because mostly of the ideas from the people of majority there: the Chinese. Most employers and most customers are of ethnic Chinese. If you don't get a long with the people of Chinese ethnic group, then you cannot happily live in Singapore.
@Daniel Lim That's rude to say that to people. Both Chinese and Indians are not native to Singapore as in not the indigenous people of Singapore no matter how long their families have been there for. Like I said, everyone should treat and talk to others like they do to their own race people.
@@stank7661 Its chinese many times bad to indians and malays. Now most employers are big MNC companies so its fair system. Now in Singapore no have special privilege so you no happy. You want all good job go to you.too bad.Now its fair equal system
@Daniel Lim My mom was born here. This is my country l am not going any where. I love Singapore. Only the malays are native to this country and they have treated us very well and not told us to go back china or india. My husbands best friends were chinese and my daughters best friend in Singapore is a chinese and my sons girlfriend is chinese. Only racist people should be brought to task regardless of race.
HelloooO.... When you address public or talk to strangers, care & discretion is always needed. Unless you go back home & talk to your Mom & Pop, you can anyhow speak also okay.

Group 1 - Family ; this is where any kinds & way of life can be done privately. Group 2 - Friends ; there is complement among inorder for them to be together. Group 3 - Public ; all are strangers, discretion & a smile is more than enough. No need to be any anything.
Singapore society is slowly but surely tearing itself apart and that is so sad to see.... We have allowed anonymous voices on the Internet take over the conversation and discussion. What we should be doing is have more public forums and open discussions. This Q&A is a good start.
Singaporean are now more divided by wealth and education. This is why there r more racial and religious prejudice in Singapore between races and within each race. Metritocracy has establish a class divide in singapore in educations, jobs and aspirations.
I think u r so wrong. More like the incapable ppl complaining and blaming others more capable and richer than them. Also more like the incapable ppl trying to divide themselves with the capable. Blame meritocracy why not reflect on oneself and how to improve oneself?
Change is now or never. Minority communities must take this opportunity to demand real change. Everyone has the common interest to keep Singapore multi-racial. Racism must stop now. There must be real change in the power dynamics of Singapore's society and more representation by the marginalized minority groups.
When i was young and naive i used to think idealism like that. Now i am much older i really don't see why a pride of race alone would qualify into a heavy lifter position in the Government. The financial world has become more complex and resources become limited and therefore extra costly. A race or gender wouldn't help a leader to navigate for long term. Very naive childish outlooks
If one day a minority race were to become a prime minister, just to prove that Singapore is not a racism country, then it's not a correct mindset, we should think in the way that if that person have a high wisdom, honourable, honest and have the strong ability to lead Singapore to the better level, it does not matter what is the race of the person is. And racism should not be link to political or in decision making.
I agree, bringing race into political is stupid. The best person for the job is what we should look for. Race should not even make the list for the factors for the best person for PM.
As you see, even among races within the Asia continent (such as Chinese, Malays, Indians), they don't get along. Imagine living in a country like USA etc where there are people from every single country on Earth. The racial problems there. If someone talks to someone else of another race for example, Chinese to Indian or Chinese to Malay, Malay to Indian, Indian to non-Indians, please be kind and treat others like how you treat people of your own race cause if he or she doesn't, the other one will remember the moments and treats all of the others' race groups very bad because of the bad experience he or she has had with that person who upset him or her. And when you see people of different races on the streets etc, don't do anything that upset the people of different races. Cause you will be remembered and you and the people that look like you such as your race will experience the consequences for a long term. But Lawrence is right; the racial problems are currently on the rise in Singapore and I think in many countries in the world cause I live in Australia and it's also on the rise here. I think one of the main root problems is Covid19 effects: Finance, Jobs, Security, Social Well Being, Vacation, etc. Lockdown happened many times, no international travels, job places closed down, distancing, people cannot meet their loved ones overseas, people lost jobs, people have to wear masks everywhere, schools and univetrsities closed down, general happiness is affected at a massive scale. And we don't know yet when international travel will open. People around the world are still getting vaccinated. The vaccine itself is not a silver bullet to destroy the virus though it provides some kind of defence.
When making a view on race please own yourself up to review your race and nationality. Don't simulate a race and nationality to have your view to complicate the racial issue that got messy already..
Throughout history, ego, pride, hunger, wealth, death, disease, panic, selfishness, panic and fear of the unknown has caused chaos and divided mankind.

For a long time, we didn’t have racial issues. But the increase of RADICALISATION has caused mutual suspicion, which is UNHEALTHY.. As a Singaporean, I choose to be COLOUR BLIND, period! People can hurt people, and it doesn’t need to be SEEN as racial causes Yet, there are those who are blatantly racist, but it is NOT the majority. So let’s NOT allow things like race, religion, sexual orientation and all the special interest ISSUES to be USED to DIVIDE our society for purpose of SUBVERSION - ie. Divide and Conquer--- like it’s happening in America and other countries! We have to be UNITED and hold on to our VALUES, BELIEFS and SHARED HISTORY! Common Singaporeans, there are only 3 million of us in the whole universe! EVERY ONE is RARE, PRECIOUS and PRICELESS!
As a Singaporean who had been living in United States for more than half decade, I have to give kudos to Singaporean. At the very least, they will admit that they r racist and will tell you their reasons. No right or wrong but that’s their experience. In United States, the Americans will argue with you in at whatever expense to prove that they r not racist... lol
@@ktan8 race does not exist - it is a product of the colonial period. A social construct, really. Prior to the 1600s, people referred to each other by geography and place of origin. The concept of race came about through the campaigns of colonial eugenics and ‘scientific racism’ in order to elevate Europeans and subjugate others. So, the American in question is right. Singapore has bought into the colonial paradigm by classifying its citizens as so. I mean, there is so much scholarship and research on this.

Wow! Minister Lawrence Wong was truly insightful on such a sensitive topic, nothing but respect, thank you Minister. It seems to me that if we humans & our light of consciousness are to survive into the future *_we will need a society that is immune to subjective offense taking by the spoken word_* with the exception as provisioned under the law where speech threatens or incites violence. Offense taking as is the case for attempted offense giving is a learned behaviour and stems from a lack of nurturing by societies of values such as love, empathy, kindness & compassion. Please hear me out... I did volunteer work at a mental health institute(I highly recommend it & no I wasn't institutionalized although my wife thinks I should be...lol....joke;) and sometimes the residents would curse me out call me a bastard, my mother a prostitute...etc all kinds of things, you get the idea, did I get upset feel offended NO, of course not, why, *_because these people were mentally ill what they needed from me was compassion, kindness & love, so this is how we should see ALL the world's people, knowing that the kind of mind they have to live with 24/7 must be so intolerable, I really felt sorry for these people._* We should also recognize that people who attempt giving offense are not contributing anything of value and it should be actively discouraged or at the very least with herd immunity be ignored. The real value of any communication is in offering feasible solutions to problems, solutions steeped in the best methodology we humans have at our disposal science, science for human concern.
There is no way we can completely eradicate racism. It was prevalent long time ago and still exist today. We have came a long way in promoting racial harmony and I must agree with Minister Lawrence Wong that we are in a much better situation than say 50 to 60 years ago. Recent incidences were amplified because of the widespread use of social media. Having said that, the more we should not take racial harmony in our peaceful island for granted. We should love our brothers and sisters regardless of race or religion.
For any *_multiracial_* society, *_multiculturalism_* shouldn't be the headline goal of government, what should be the goal of government is *unity of vision* for the future where *we don't encourage diversity of thought* for its own sake usually borne of culture, but instead we nurture *_'thinking correctly' i.e. thinking that is in line with the most successful methodology historically for arriving at solutions to problems, science._* Science is our last best hope to objectively resolve the many issues we all face today including racism, issues that if left unresolved may well be our species demise.

The root causes of a surge in racist feelings could be caused by policies, cultural differences, social circumstances and individual misunderstandings and prejudices. They have to be studied in depth and rectified. But the use of digital media to amplify the severity of a seemingly racist incident and to arouse further ill feelings among communities will.also be a matter of concern.

@@gha9543 Don't understand what you said? What has this to do with whether one can become a PM or not? In Singapore, to become a PM, he has to go through a democratic process, He or she must be elected into parliament and win the majority support of the parliament.
Using digital media itself would amplify whatever is being highlighted. I think it is not fair to say that it amplifies the severity of any incident since the feelings of the people involved are very real and very raw. I do, however, agree with Minister Lawrence that we need to be careful about it; Be ready to forgive and have the conversation on the basis of mutual trust. Perhaps what you meant was we shouldn't be quick to use social media to pass severe judgements on perpetrators.
I do not think Singaporeans should not be so sensitive on this issue, it is human nature that people always enjoy being with the same race or same ethnic group. But we should be always polite and nice to other races and different people without any discrimination. I am Chinese from the mainland, I have no idea why I feel uncomfortable when I see blacks, I know this is totally wrong, I obtained my Ph.D. from a top foreign university, I should not be so assole, my parents never meet blacks so they did not teach me anything about race. So I guess this is human nature's problem. I can control it, be nice and get along well with them, but I can not eliminate some feelings. Human is really bad in this sense.
Yes they are unfamiliar. But do you assume they are less than you? Less smart, less capable, less worthy of a job you might be interviewing for? When unfamiliarity leads to an individual of a different race being denied social opportunities, it becomes everyone else's problem that you are unfamiliar.
There is no evidence that keke said or even infers they are any less. While so many make polarized stand for or against, all miss the point. keke's statement is very honest, well-balanced & from the bottom of one's heart because he acknowledges the possibility one might be uncomfortable with the unfamiliar, but also recognizes the fact that we are all human at the end of the day, all human lives are valuable & should be afforded the basic human respect. This is still much better than the racism you see in the west where non-whites are at best tolerated. If not, they are either harrased even by the authorities i.e police, assaulted or even killed & such violence are even institutional You shouldn't even be singling out the majority, or even the minorities. All have a part to play in mutual win-win understanding & the way forward would be to maintain regular dialogues so issues can be promptly discussed so joint win-win arrangements/agreements can be made. This will definitely be better than bottling up grievances to the point where it explodes & misunderstandings become violent. BTW, I have many friends from all races, had done national service with many of them, graduated with many of them & celebrate the festivities of many races. This is the product by which we are brought up in a society that consciously makes an effort to keep itself race blind as much as possible, having even the national anthem in bahasa & the recognized 4 languages representative of the ethnicities in Singapore, so no enthicities should be overly defensive over any racist remarks made etc. Many pioneer ancestors in Singapore here regardless of race lived through Japanese atrocities, lived through tough lives in a 3rd world environment & persevered through under lky's era to bring about better lives for successive generations. Singapore has come so far in this & racist foreigners who aren't Singaporeans or lack this contextual understanding should not & have no right to judge Singaporean society from only the filters of their own understanding. I'll simply like to end this by saying regardless of race, language or religion. Majullah Singapura. Malaysia boleh, Singapore juga boleh. Suffice to say, you can even call me an orang asli of Singapore.

To be frank, majority Singaporean are not as racist as what the reports mentioned. In facts, some Chinese are also being racist by the minorities group also, so if the majority Chinese are naive and stupid to become racist, than this society will not be as harmony until these far. He glossed over the issue... conveniently ignoring the inequality on the returns. EIP should stay but how the pricing / transaction system needs to change. Like what happened to MRT. Will pap continue to encourage inter racial relationship to make singapore into a nation of hybrid foreign alien mixed bastards generation , during LKY and GCT management , there are no ceca and very much lesser inter racial relationship compared to past 10 years during LHL management . What is you opinion in regard to the above question ?
Frankly speaking racism has been going on for years but it was very subtle but as years progress it has become more visible as person who have experienced this for years it is nothing new to us minorities. I will guarantee not all are racist,my hubby is Chinese , my friends are from different races. What I have seen over the years is lack of understanding, unwilling to mix with other races , a kind of prejudice thoughts from older generation instilled into the younger generation , ignorant of others cultures, a mentality of superior race and lack of education of races among people.
Racism is a mindset inculcated by the environment. SG may be better off than other countries in fostering a fair and just environment which give equal opportunity to all races but the same cannot be said for other countries whose citizen are subjected to dividing racial policy and differential treatment. The racism mindset in other countries' citizen is deep ingrained in them since birth. When you import these citizen into SG as SG citizen, they bring along with them this deeply ingrained mindset. Are these new citizen gonna become less racist overnight the moment they become SG citizen? Clearly the answer is no. And when they are in SG and unconsciously (I emphasize unconsciously because it may be something that they may not have control over) behave in a way that spell racist, it will invoke a reciprocal response from SG-borned citizen in a tit-for-tat defensive response. So it is not surprising that the overall environment in terms of racism has deteriorated over time in SG. The cost for such mass immigration policy must not be lost upon us. We may reap immediate low-hanging economic benefits but the cost that we need to pay back will accrues for future generation to pay back. We are now using our 'credit card overdraft' so be careful not to bankrupt the future generation with today's easy spending.

I did volunteer work at a mental health institute(I highly recommend it & no I wasn't institutionalized although my wife thinks I should be...lol....joke;) and sometimes the residents would curse me out call me a bastard, my mother a prostitute...etc all kinds of things, you get the idea, did I get upset feel offended NO, of course not, why, *_because these people were mentally ill what they needed from me was compassion, kindness & love, so this is how we should see ALL the world's people, knowing that the kind of mind they have to live with 24/7 must be so intolerable, I really felt sorry for these people._*
We should also recognize that people who attempt giving offense are not contributing anything of value and it should be actively discouraged or at the very least with herd immunity be ignored.

But the use of digital media to amplify the severity of a seemingly racist incident and to arouse further ill feelings among communities will.also be a matter of concern.

If not, they are either harrased even by the authorities i.e police, assaulted or even killed & such violence are even institutional
You shouldn't even be singling out the majority, or even the minorities.

Regardless of race, language and religious, there are the good, the bad and the ugly people. Of course racism issues are all around the world, number is the only difference. To be frank, majority Singaporean are not as racist as what the reports mentioned. In facts, some Chinese are also being racist by the minorities group also, so if the majority Chinese are naive and stupid to become racist, than this society will not be as harmony until these far.
Races hatred are arrogance, insidious and idiots. As a simple normal citizen, I can only do my part by bringing harmony and wishing for are races in Singapore to live peacefully together.
To my personal view, the government has already done extremely well for the minorities groups Singaporean. But the government must not forget to concern the people from the majority group that also need support indeed.

Those unable to sell their houses due to the quota should be able to sell it back to hdb at market rates if that house is unable to be sold on the market by a set time limit
Minister Wong explained that the purpose of the EIP is to serve the nation's social engineering needs. At least the MND is willing to extend some flexibility to manage the difficulty of selling one's flat. It's not a perfect system. Wonder if there are policy wonks out there who can propose credible alternatives instead of merely proposing to do away with it.
He glossed over the issue... conveniently ignoring the inequality on the returns. EIP should stay but how the pricing / transaction system needs to change. Like what happened to MRT. Public goods should stay true to goals in public goos and services provision, aka stay equal (indifferent), affordable, flexible for all, not speculative investment. So removing the secondary resale market based on invisible hands (appreciation + COV) is the way to tackle it.

We had a history of racial riots. Also had struggled for racial harmony where it finally got to where we were better in the 1980s and 1990s..
Back in the days, racial harmony was part of our childhood education in school, and focused on the importance of that too. (Speaking from personal experience of 1985 to 1996)
However, as times had changed. Many beneficial morals had been lost..
Courtesy the lion, 好公民, the teachings of generousity, kindness, initiative, understanding, cleanliness can hardly be seen in the younger generations.. what about foreigners being racist towards singaporeans?
With just three main races living together, the problems are already quite a handful.
Now, there are substantial mix of even more people of different races and ethnicity living and working here - PRC Chinese, Taiwanese, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Burmese, Indonesians, Filipinos, Indians, Vietnamese etc.....with some groups consisting up to 6% -10% of the citizen population in an island of only 728 square metres.
The tiny island has become a multi - racial pressure pot after the govt modified the population policies.

Racism is secondary.
Conflict is primary.
When 2 (or more) persons have a conflict, it's regarding the ONE thing leads to another.
From the conflict, then, tribalism symptoms set in. These people in conflict will Race to establish a reason to greater defend their claims & further causing potent damage at the others - for example AGE GAP, RACISM, GENDERs...just about anything to enhance their Reasons & Purpose in inflicting damage & defending their claim.
As these goes on & on, ill-perception is borned... even before any conflict, people will just perceive a certain ill-concept for no apparent reasons of their own.
First & utmost, people should embrace & promote HARMONY & not CONFLICT. Then , racism, genders, age discrimination will CEASED.

Correct! 👍🏻
You are surely Franklily very confused. Oh God please save D.Low
@@ConradSNIPER you sir have no idea what other races go through and believe me when say I know.

The MOST difficult word to define... "being fair". What is fair? Is it fair to be fair? Or no such thing as being fair. Sadly, NOT EASY to be fair in a multi-racial country!!
my supervisor once told me' there is no such thing as 'fair'
We are all not perfect, hence, it is unrealistic to expect true fairness or a perfect world to live in. More important is not to have a victim mentality that always blame society for any misfortune perceived.

In this whole interview, other than solutions given in terms of various policies and systems to be put in place to address such concerns, it was very sad to see that even minsters in such high ranks have no clue about raising human consciousness.
