What is the footprint of this frame? LxWxH I want to know if it will fit on my porch before I purchase the plans. It looks nice though. I really like the side table additions.
This grand is wanting swing for grands when they visit; however, during the cooler temps in a month or two, planning for winter garden. With the removal of the swing, the frame can be a huge cold frame with transparent tarp to extend the growing season. By summer it gets used again by the grands! Thank you for the plans. Even the cup holders can be tool storage. In the winter garden shed! Very creative!
Been a while since I watched some of your TH-cam videos. Watching you is what got me started turning my garage into a workshop and now I'm making tables and other projects. I quite my job and went fulltime a couple months ago. Just wanted to say thank you and appreciate all the work you put into your videos.
Rather dancing in joints, this AW chooses to dance on the joints. Standing/dancing on projects is becoming her hallmark and a good test of integrity. Dance girl, dance!
I've found that, instead of using screw-type eyelets, and trusting the threads to carry a load, I feel safer drilling through the beam and using a welded eyebolt with a washer and nylock nut or two nuts jammed together. Especially over time, much less chance of the wood fibers holding screw threads getting stripped. Just my experience.
Those who live in wetter climates be sure to put your fastners through the underside of joints, so moisture drains naturally. The screw holes collect water and will rot out, even pressure treated lumber pretty quickly, especially if you get freezing temps.
I love the way you end your video with that wave of your hand.. love the way you do things simple yet intricate. Girl power is not just a phrase and you prove it with your work. Love from Canada..
Great video and very nice looking frame. One suggestion I would have is to ship lap the top support on the inside. Currently the racking force is trying to pushout on the lap joint and only the screws are resisting the force. If it were ship lap on the inside the racking force would push the horizontal member into the joint, not out.
There is something peaceful, even comforting about a porch swing, sitting in the shade, with a gentle sway, enjoying the breeze and watching the world go by according to your own agenda....
I really enjoyed your videos and your little friends running around. I love woodworking and make stuff with my hands. I love your shop lol I want it. I do my work in a open born in my yard.
Ok..... Now I've gotta rebuild my swing stand now. Yours has a shelves for drinks and even to make sun tea if one desires such a splendid beverage. It looks great.
April thanks for all your great video’s since I have found you and your show I am amazed I am so proud of you I love being a student of yours you are a great person and teacher and you have a beautiful adetude.
A coat of paint on exposed grain ends will about double the life of outdoor wood. Especially: grain ends that are butted to another piece of wood. Painting after assembly will not penetrate the joints, but water will, and it will stay to help the progression of rot. All the braces to my pergolas and gazebo had to be replaced after about 6 years (coming completely apart). Three coats on the ends now!
If you used screw eyes to fasten to the top rail I would suggest through drilling and using eye bolts with washers and nuts as they would be a lot more secure. the topcap could be marked and routed to conceal the bolts (and protect them from weather)
Does either this "A" Frame Style or the Covered Frame Style have any stability advantages over the other? Do either feel a little tipsy when swinging aggressively? I like both designs, but only need one...lol. Thanks April! Have a Great Day!!!
The biggest issue is that the A frame legs are mainly in compression. The single vertical beam is in compression but stability wise it is torqued forward and backwards and is only as stable as the bottom angle brackets. An A frame would be more stable because the legs are only in compression mode with no torque. As you swing, the compression will become greater and lessor, but will remain in compression. An A frame would also be more stable because the center of gravity would have to exceed the angles of the down legs. The single vertical beam has a bottom plate that that would have to be as long as the spacing of the A frame feet so that the center of gravity would also have to exceed the same angle to tip over.
Florin Jurcovici the bending action on the beam is applying a torque at the base. A torque wrench is applying its bending force to torque the bolt. I believe the concept is understood with my explanation.
@@scottmoore598 Not really. There's a ring around the nut or the screw head when you use a wrench. There's no such thing here. In your example, what's subject to torsion is the screw. The screw is missing in any of the constructions presented in the clip. For torsion to occur, you need something that resists being rotated around its own axis. Like the crankshaft in a car - the cranks from the pistons try to rotate it, the wheels cause it to resist rotation. In your example, the element resisting rotation is the screw. It's all bending and stretching and compressing in the two designs presented in the clip, without any twisting. Reason I insist on this is that different materials - especially wood - behave differently to various kinds of load.
Another great job April 👍👍, sure enjoy watching your channel and the great success you have accomplished !!! You’re doing a fantastic job 👍👍. Thanks for sharing with with us.

hello April, i purchased and downloaded the plans for the porch swing a frame yesterday evening. can you give me an idea where i would find the template for the top profile associated with this download? I couldn't find it. thanks, John
I will build mine in a few days, but won't take pieces to any part to assemble it, but instead, will screw over, to not weaken any piece, as well as for easier assembly and to use less tools
Hello dear community, Do you think legs made out of 2x4 will work , for a small swing (3 foot long)? (Using different assembly, since I won't be able to cut the wood for joints). Or it will be too flimsy. Thanks
There might be two thoughts on this. One if the ground is not level where it sits water run off will and take care of itself. The other is to add some sealer on the top. Adding a bevel would be for a good idea if the swing would be sitting on a level surface. All IMO.
How tall is this frame from the top straight down to the ground? The kits at the swing store were too low for my taste. I like a long swing and I'm wondering if this will be enough before I purchase the plans.
Nice! Finally outdoor projects with half laps and closer to my favorite timber framing! Love it!!! I’d love to see you come up with a modern aesthetic approach to this very concept but instead of A frames with a modern approach to it 🤟🏽 like an H frame or what you see with moderns style homes. Quick question, this is the area I struggle with with any chair or leg involved project and that is how to square the length of your project’s legs? How to ensure each leg is identical in length to the other without only relying on measurements as I feel there’s always too much that can go wrong when relying on strictly measuring and numbers... I’m also number dyslexic and eventually I figure it out after waisting too much time rechecking my numbers when I’m there are easier, more precise ways of getting a square set of legs
Utilizing a stop block system when cutting them out is a good way to ensure they are identical lengths. Then the measurement doesn't have to be perfect on the 1st one because the rest of the legs will be identical to the 1st one. Who cares if you're off by a 32nd of an inch on the 1st one when all of the legs will be exactly the same, which will guarantee the level and squareness you've asked about.
Good Morning. My name and juarez. I am from Brazil in the state of minas gerais in the city of cataguases. I'll follow you on youtub, I won't miss a video. I just wanna know what’s the cuts called that the top beem fits in

@@douglasflores1462 what kind of bracket?

The lap joints really clean up the appearance and add structural rigidity. Very nice design.
April's new dance step... The 4x4 hop! 💃
The A-Frame 2-Step.
@@A.R.B.J. I like that one better... You get to pick the dance names from now on 👍

Thanks, I do too. I love the look. Thanks for watching.
You have come a long way from working in your garage April. I like the way you smile, keep making videos 👍🏻👍🏻
A new Wilkerdo video with my Sunday morning coffee. I’m happy! 😊
Hi
There is something peaceful, even comforting about a porch swing, sitting in the shade, with a gentle sway, enjoying the breeze and watching the world go by according to your own agenda....
Thank you for making the plans and templates free. We don't all have enough money to pay for stuff like that. Great video
You're welcome! Enjoy the build! Thanks for watching.
I think I love this style even more than the roofed one and the end tables make a nice touch! Great video!
You could always add a covered roof on the top plate.
Loved it! I'm an amateur carpenter, I've always been afraid of cutting in angles, but you've inspired me, so I will try! Thank you!
Great job, April. To get an almost endless supply of cheap wood come to Arkansas. Anything bigger than the local saw mill is considered waste.
Flower holder, your end tables. Great project! Be safe, be cool, Beach, NC

The end tables are an excellent idea.
1/4", maybe 5/16" eye screws into soft cedar holding that swing up? Not for long. Through-bolt that or you're going down.
It looks great and I bet is used a lot. Take care and stay safe.
The A-frame looks great!
This is the best video I’ve seen. Very detailed and I love it, now i have confidence to tackle my project.

Nice looking frame! I also am a big fan of half lap joinery, besides the strength, it just looks so much better!
Turned out very well keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work make on
Did you use a bolt through the top beam with washer and nuts to support the swing?

Beautiful work, April! It really looks amazing! 😃

Very nice Wood Project it so sweet looking. April how is the Guitar 🎸 playing working out? I glad that this video Came up. Thanks God Bless.
What degree did you cut the bottom of the legs?
What did you use for wood? Hardwood cedar or just pt. Didn’t look like pt. Bought your plans this am. Just looking for quality of wood you used.
Any recommendations for a backyard That’s not quite level? Are the legs secured into something?
I just finished building this and the location I put it at isn't level. To compensate, I buried the legs on the high side a few inches.
