This band now comprises 35 musicians as compared to the over 140 that made up the old bands of the Scottish Division. A sad loss indeed as these bands were well known. These regimental bands once were: The Black Watch Queens Own Highlanders Gordon Highlanders Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders Royal Highland Fusiliers Royal Scots Kings Own Scottish Borderers All these fine bands are now gone. The pipers shown are from one of the battalions of the new Royal Regiment of Scotland.
This band is the last remaining kilted regular army band in the British army. There were once 7 regimental bands comprisng all the units of the former Scottish Div. In 1994 these 7 were reduced to 2, the Highland and Lowlands bands of the Scottish Division. With the latest reorganization in 2006 these 2 are now the one you see here. The Royal Regiment of Scotland is the umbrella formation for the remainig 5 scottish regular army battalions in the UK army. This is all thats left! Sad indeed.
alvindurochermtl sorry! didnt mean to question your military cred. stupidly didnt think of canada, more scottish regiments there than we have in scotia now. canadian troops throughout time, have been (with the scots, and others) the bravest of the brave. my military career started in 1964 when i became a boy drummer with 15 batt. parachute regt (TA) glasgow. at 17 and a bit joined the royal signals, served for three years transferring into the RMP service in the far east and in NI. then TA 3yrs
The amalgamation of so many gallant Scottish Regiments. Should I live to see the day... you cannot amalgamate The Royal Scots, the Royal Regiment with any other in the British Army. AMARGH GU BRAITH! Let there be a reckoning.
This is the last remaining regular army band of the Scottish regiments. All seven regimental bands of the scots regiments have now been reduced to this single band. The pipers must come from one of the scottish regiments. Nice to see them at the Berlin Tattoo
Just ...Pure Magic...bagpipes and band coming together in perfect harmony and musicianship...wow...hard to express my joy at watching this....I can only hope I can take my children to see them one day
I love seeing an army of pipers playing fast song such as this and watching their fingers flying on the chanters in unison, it's absolutly amazing!!! Wonderful outfits too. Thank you very much for posting this!!!!!
Pipers who are neither royalty nor surnamed Stewart can legitimately wear the RS tartan if they belong to a "Royal" regiment ; e.g. The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment), The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards etc.
This tape reminds me of a great performance I saw years ago at Madison Square Garden in NYC: the Regimental Band and Pipes & Drums of the Black Watch. The crowd was approx 14,000. Sadly, the Regimental Band of the BW was disbanded not too long ago, due to downsizing of the military. I say, build one less plane and keep the band for another 10-20 years.
@jwslider1 The Pipe Major is easy recognisable also because he is the man ON THE RIGHT. The two fellows in the band you referred to are the Bandmaster and the Band Sergeant Major, both entitled (along with the DOM) to wear a Broadsword with belt and Regimental plaque on the front.
the soldiers were sooooo good. What ever happened to our regiments, the Camerons, the Black Watch and the Argylle and S highlanders. After today watching the remembrance carry on at the Cenotpath with all the high hie hied yiens, does it not make you wonder why our lads are there in the first place??
It always gives me a great impression and emotion. I heard and saw them in Edinburgh, in 1999 for the first time, and i'm looking forward going again to feel that wonderful music. I love Scotland!
Hi, yes Royal Regiment of Scotland still has five regimental pipe bands. But I am talking about Military bands here. Each of the old Scttish regiments had a Military or Regimental band. All of those have been reduced since 1994 to this one active army band. There is a TA band that is also part of the Royal Regiment of Scotland now which use to be known as 51 Brigade band. There was also a 52 Lowland Band in the TA that is now part of the RR of Scotland as well. My facts are correct.
@PUCCINIMUSICK I got the Pipe Major and Drum Major and DOM - Many times the DOM in the USMC is a Warrant Officer - or Limited Duty Officer. Look closely, however, there is a trombonist with a sword. USMC has an NCO sabre and an officer sword, so he may be an NCO. After 24 years I guess I can see the little differences. It makes sense that the Pipe Major is on the right of the front rank - that is the senior position. I notice when the pipe major leads the band he marches in the front rank.
When I started learning the pipes, I learned tunes on my own. Incorrectly, of course. Eventually, I went to a teacher who basically said "no no, no, you're doing it wrong. Try it like this!" and he handed me sheet music. I'm a much better piper because of him.
THAT BAND WAS PRESENT ALSO AT THE KREMLIN ZORIA, I SAW. THE MAIN PIPER OF THIS REGIMENTAL BAND PLAYED LIKE SOLIST THE START OF AMAZING GRACE ON THE RED SQUARE.
@eoghanbeg Partially right: the Seaforth and Camerons were "highland" regiments through and through in their ranks inspite of the fact the officers were mainly English in order to avoid riots and mutiny. But in these two regiments among the ranks the percentage of Irish recruits was very low and the Gaelic language in use as much as they could. Nothing to say about the other units where English was "the" Language. Even in my beloved Gordons, whose 1st Battalion was made of English-born people
tears in my eyes !! Wonderful, to see , to hear~~~~ my eyes , filled , were trying to catch the Tartans , did , I see, the Royal Stewart Tartans, ??? IF ANYONE CAN HELP OUT HERE , WITH THE TARTANS WOULD BE APPRICIATED ,,God Bless & Thank-you
Hi constructionbear Do you know that in northern italy we have pipes as well? they're calle baghet. If you happen to be in brescia o bergamo (berghem in local language; ryan air is flying in from all over the UK) ask for them... Cheers
I can't remember where, nor when, but I read that, during WW2, in 1944, in Normandy, a German unit fled when they heard the bagpipes of the Blakwatch drawing near. Can anybody confirm or infirm this, please ?
I am trying to translate the uniforms into my US Marine issued brain. I get the different uniforms for the pipers, and I can see who is the pipe major. There are a couple of bandsmen that have a white sash or diagonal belt across the chest and a sword or sabre. Are these bandsnen officers?
hey all. I'm an American with pure Scottish heratige. Thinking of moving to Scottland. Is this difficult/impossible? Your advice is welcomed. Also I'm a classical musician (horn)
here is the grandfather of BAGPIPE, named TULUM in TURKEY, historians say that SCOTTISH people comes from ANATOLIA - TURKEY.... hi from TURKEY to ALL SCOTTISH FRIENDS!!!
Except that people don't solely wear their clan's tartan (since clans were always a Highland thing anyway). Lots of people wear Royal Stewart tartan who are neither Royal nor surnamed Stewart, for example.
I was more meaning people generally wearing it rather than soldiers. In fact technically all Scottish infantry (except Scots Guardsmen) can wear it because what were the Scottish Regiments are now battalions of the Royal Regiment of Scotland.
Itchy Fingers one of my favorite tunes!

Been there (Berlin), seen them and boy were they magnificent!
I watch this about a couple of times a month, just to keep life inspiring.
WO1 Paul Wilman. Very refined conductor...Done a couple of gigs with him with his old band Royal Corps of Signals.
It's Captain Wilman not WO1
Great band and music..I love them and Scotland.

Thank you for posting this. I watch it about once a week-it is a pick me up. That is some great piping-talk about precision!
I'm learning Itchy Fingers and I can't believe it's played that fast!
Awesome music ...greetings from Hellas!
Four actually, they played a little bit of Black Bear at the very end.
this is great! clumsy lover is my favorite tune, and with the band, i LOVED it

o dear goodness you lot are nuts would you just stop bickering and pushing each others buttons and listen to the beautiful music!!!
that was magnificent, thanks for posting this!
You need the music when you play the pipes. You hear the tune and your fingers learn it.
amazing, very well done
and the wigs, and skirts ... great style too

I love the sound of the Bagpipes !
Greetings from Germany
A magnificent job...well performed.. I raise my hat to you...

Yes, it would be great to see it live. Love this stuff
I enjoy your channel Winnie 9212. I also think this is a very nice performance. The recording is perfectly acceptable as well.
It always gives me a great impression and emotion. I heard and saw them in Edinburgh, in 1999 for the first time, and i'm looking forward going again to feel that wonderful music. I love Scotland!
who ever invented the bagpipe was a freakin genius...

Great video, and first class music, only a shame it wasn't longer!
So beautiful.

@TheScotlandtheBrave it's listed in the info. the beginning was itchy fingers then clumsy lover and it finished with Scotland the Brave.
Amazing!
wee question,Is itchy fingers a difficult tune to learn? Thanks.Top sounds
The second part is a little difficult, because you have to constantly cut to high A, but once you've learned that it's ok.
@eoghanbeg Partially right: the Seaforth and Camerons were "highland" regiments through and through in their ranks inspite of the fact the officers were mainly English in order to avoid riots and mutiny. superb
I know that, the RS was my regimental tartan, I was an army piper for more than 15 years

The pipes and drums are from The Highlanders, 4th Bn RR of Scotland
really love the combined band, sounds so much better than the individuals by themselves
I really don’t like the combined band, but that’s my opinion.

Does anyone know where i can get the clumsy lover music? The music for the exact same tune they just played. For bagpipes . Thanks
Try the Scot's Guards Standard Settings of Pipe Music book, preferably volume V. If not, you know, there is something called google images.
hey all. I'm an American with pure Scottish heratige. Thinking of moving to Scottland. Is this difficult/impossible? Your advice is welcomed. Also I'm a classical musician (horn)

Me neither O_o
Yes I knew he was born in Edinburgh but isn't his father English? I believe his father was adopted by a Scot as a child.
I was there in WW2..me and all of my friends shat ourselves in a hasty manner as we ran for the hills..

The Queen Mother (God Rest her Soul) was Scots, born in Glamis Castle so I guess that adds a fair bit of Scots blood to the Royal family blood line.
