This mod shows that the PSP was an incredible marvel of engineering. Not only the construction as you can see, but the power of the device. A goddang PS2 almost, in 2004, portable. Their choice to go with optical discs was something only Sony would have the balls to do as well, and really allowed it to shine with all the graphics it can pull off and the depth of games. PSP's marvel of engineering aside, this mod really follows. That level of proper engineering of boards is as incredible as it can get and as an engineer myself, I know, absolutely love and respect the effort and ability put into this. And it's upgradable to boot, considering it's modularity. The only thing I could point as a change would be using the Memory Stick slot for the Pi's SD slot on the carrier board, and that sure isn't much of a thing to complain even. One funny thing tho is running PS1 games on it or PSP emulated, that's the silliest most roundabout way of achieving the functionality it already had, but of course that isn't the point, I can imagine this being a beast running Wii games even when the software support is there and the Pi compute modules get powerful enough. Imagine a PSP running Switch games? That would be crazy!
A raspberry pi priced computer isn't going to powerful enough to run wii games for the next 20 years. We are approaching the physical limits for shrinking transistors, and so pretty soon were going to have to just start making things bigger for performance and we'll basically have hit a hard limit on how much computing power a modern sized CPU dye could ever have. Not considering quantum computers.

Good mod if something happens to the mainboard of the PSP. I think the only issue I can think of is the question about whether or not a person wants to replace the mainboard for the PSP cause then it wouldn't REALLY be a PSP anymore, for those purists. Feel like it would be cool to go full custom with different color shells and buttons and whatnot.
I actually have a PSP that has been sitting gathering dust since... shortly after I bought it. I would totally do this if I knew how, but the only thing I've ever managed to solder is a guitar pickup. I was a software developer - we don't get our hands dirty 💀
I really enjoy seeing your Halloween intro each year. This was truly Frankenstein coming to live. Very cool mod and will have to keep an eye on this project.
Interesting video... But it's not just "upgrading" the PSP, it's replacing everything. Just keep the case and the button... And the PSP with CFW can already emulate all games until the N64/PSOne era. So unless you have a dead PSP or you want to keep the PSP case style, I don't think modding your PSP like this is actually a good idea...
Great vid, Tito! Been toying with getting a PSP to mod. I did this exact thing to a Game Gear a while back and it was awesome. Plug and play wins for modding because you can revert. Now I need to look up the Compute Module 5 now as I wasn't aware it existed.
Very cool! Now instead of having a system that could already play PSP and PSX natively as well as SNES and GBA just fine you've got one that can't be used for the original purpose! Absolutely brilliant.
I'd love to see this mod using a vita or switch as the psp analogue stick was kind pretty poor and obv we're missing a second stick. Regardless, nice mod and great vid, thanks Nacho
@daimer8660 Let's say that there are a hundred seventeen million console players out there. This was the number of units shipped for the PS4 during the eighth generation and the best-selling system. This makes it a good baseline if anything else. The playstation vita only sold sixteen million units. This means that there's only one playstation vita for every seven people to share. Do you see why low level Or even cycle accurate emulation of failed systems is important? And why destroying the only units that can play these games By making unnecessary modifications to them natively is a bad idea? Not to mention the vita has a built in camera, microphone, motion controls, and the rear touch panel. All those things are rather difficult to emulate unless the hardware It's being emulated on also has those things. This is why preservation of the system is extremely important for the sake of archival.
@@thefool3424 as I explained, the analogue stick on the psp is terrible, not to mention there's only 1 of them. On the vita you're getting proper analogue sticks and two of them. This alone is reason enough. The psp version already exists now, it isnt like creating a vita version is going to delete the psp version from existance.
Y'all talking about the Analogue sticks which I completely understand... but I would be more curious how the Pi would make usage of the touch screen + back touch pad. That would also be useful in MANY instances!
What a wonderful mod! The only thing I can think of is the missed opportunity to use USB-C instead of mini-USB. And yes, in that case it would be mandatory to make room for USB-C. IMO this would have been worth it.
A very nice project, but I'm not sure it's worth it at the moment. If this CM can run up to PS1 and N64 games, and maybe a psp emulator, it doesn't really offer much more than a unmodded psp in terms of power and systems. And one can always swap a better LCD, or a bigger battery, on the original PSP 1000 guts. Definitely interesting, indeed, will follow for future evolutions :) This can obv be a nice way to reuse faulty psps
Mentioning the choice between the microSD and eMMC storage, it would be ideal to use both. The eMMC for the OS, and SD cards for ROMs. I can imaging this would just be a software tweak in the future.
I think that the PS Vita might be the best retro emulation console(with only software mods). The main issue I used to have was with the locked down memory card, but OFW allows you to set an SD in the game card slot as the memory card. The New 3DS is a close second because then you can play DS games, but I don't often find myself wanting to play DS games I don't own.
Nice kit and so straight forward. So maybe a WiiU controlpad version in the future? Hate to see those broken control pads chuck into drawers or become landfill.
Can’t wait for the dominos to fall on that one. As consoles get bricked here and there more and more game pads will have potential for some trash to treasure mods.
A big con for me would be keeping the mini USB plug. I know it's supposed to be a stock PSP from the outside. But I would have liked changing that plug to USB C. Or maybe have a separate USB C plug inside the UMD bay
This mod would be impressive if it had a simpler install design. A slim down pi board cut to fit a UMD disc base that can be inserted or removed from the bay, just like all other PSP games. Benefiting from a compact design, with an easy install all while maintaining aesthetic uniformity with the PSP. Best of all, eliminating the need to gut the entire console. I'm thinking of something along the lines of how the Dreamcast can have it's optical drive replaced with a physical emulator. Although this would not particularly be an alteration to the PSP, but something that is portable like any other UMD disc.
You guys rock! I just bought a psp 3000 to bring back my days in middle school but this new add on is going to change the gameplay experience for sure looing forward to a more in depth review of the user interface
This is pretty cool but after putting custom firmware on my psp go not much can beat the form factor. Would be cool to see an emulation machine that has the slide out screen.
This is OK, but I will stick with my Vita. A far superior handheld with a bigger screen, longer battery life, and no modding necessary (well , apart from software, of course.) if I attempted this with my sausage fingers I can guarantee that I would either rip the contacts off the board, or crack the screen, or something. The only way I would get 100% would be to buy 15 of them.
Let me help with cons: 1. You can turn PSP into homebrew and emulation powerhouse without any hardware modifications. Yes, less powerful, so only few N64 games can run with decent FPS, but again - it's free and no assembly required. 2. This mod has PSP controls intact, so going into advanced 3D-emulation is more of a flex than the actual fun, since you could barely handle PS1 controls in a very simple games, and despite having an analog stick you're stuck to a digital control scheme just because you have to compensate for L2/R2 absence with d-pad (which also rendered some games that rely on six-finger layout painful to play). So any talk of a future potential is poitless - without modding the console to accomodate analogue L2/R2 triggers and L3/R3 sticks, any further hardware upgrades are pointless - even if one day there would be enough power to run Xenia there, it would be impossible to play most of the games due to a deficient controls. Don't get me wrong, this is an impressive technical feat and surely could make use of a dead PSP, but if you have one still operational - you have all you need already, just hack it, and if you want to go an extra step, you can put an IPS screen, new battery and micro-SD adapter there.
Not sure why you would want to do this over just adding custom firmware. Super cool to see but seems like a lot of work when it can be done in a matter of minutes with CFW.
I think what would really give a "reason" to this project is finally allowing PSP to access internet without issues(unlike original) and stream games from PC. That would be just amazing to play modern games on old good PSP. Because as it was described in the video it's rather a curiosity but doesn't add any extra value on top of original console
Would had been nice if he made one for the PSP Go too. Supporting the original PSP-1000 is okay but most of us don't want to get rid of the UMD drive plus the PSP Go had 16gb of internal storage which Adam could easily utilize.
I don't know if this counts as a "mod", considering there's none of the original hardware there anymore, just the case and buttons. You're not using the Raspberry to upgrade the PSP, you're using the Raspberry to replace the PSP, which is good if the motherboard was already dead, but a waste if the PSP is perfectly repairable, since it's a good console for emulation and homebrew on its own.
This is very cool. But why the hell would someone do this? Why would you kill your console and transform it into a chinese handheld emulation console instead of buying a chinese handheld emulation console for half the price? Unless your PSP is bricked, this is insanity.
I stand by my opinion that this is a terrible and pointless mod. For starters you can install retroarch on a normal PSP. For finishers, it'll play PSP games WORSE than the original hardware. There is literally zero reason to do this. Just put a cm4 in a Retroflag gameboy case. There are 40$ handhelds that are more powerful than this too. Your phone is a better option than this.
iFixIt is one of my fav companies, and it has helped me get started, and (mostly) fix a Xbox Series X controller that a friend said I could have. I accidentally broke the motion detector, but that doesnt matter to me, and im learning to solder, so ill fix it eventually.
I saw the original "no cut" mod and thought "Maybe," but then I saw you've got to take most of it's guts out. I love my original PSP, and she still runs beautifully after nearly 19 years. I couldn't take her insides out, and even parts units cost around AU$70. That makes this an expensive tinker. Good on you for your design skills, but I think you underestimate how much those of us who still run them, love them. They're still retaining their value for good reason.
This is a great idea and hats off to all the work that went into it. That being said the original psp already does all these things and more If it played PS2 or GameCube it would be worth it

Making Ben Heck proud Adam - psp emulation once ready will really be a great feature
We are entering another level of mods right now. Insane.
So unless you have a dead PSP or you want to keep the PSP case style, I don't think modding your PSP like this is actually a good idea...
huge props to you for that intro man, very nice.
Great vid, Tito! Been toying with getting a PSP to mod. I did this exact thing to a Game Gear a while back and it was awesome. Plug and play wins for modding because you can revert. Now I need to look up the Compute Module 5 now as I wasn't aware it existed.
I appreciate the intro and what you've done with the budget!
Very cool! Now instead of having a system that could already play PSP and PSX natively as well as SNES and GBA just fine you've got one that can't be used for the original purpose! Absolutely brilliant.
The intro was insane!!!!!!!
I'd love to see this mod using a vita or switch as the psp analogue stick was kind pretty poor and obv we're missing a second stick. Regardless, nice mod and great vid, thanks Nacho
Why vita? There aren't that many of them in existence so for preservation sake we would ideally want to keep them as stock as possible.
@@thefool3424 You make it sound like Sony only made 10 units of the system
I love the Halloween intro edit!
Keep up the amazing work Macho!! 😁
I hope Adam is able to do this full time. He seems like a very talented individual and deserving of our support!
Glad you mentioned the storage at the end, I definitely was thinking about the whole video. Might put that near the beginning.
What a wonderful mod! The only thing I can think of is the missed opportunity to use USB-C instead of mini-USB. And yes, in that case it would be mandatory to make room for USB-C. IMO this would have been worth it.
I love the Halloween theme! Very well done, and obviosuly entertaining.
Thank you!!
De nada, *obviously. lol @@MachoNachoProductions
This video is making me appreciate the PSP even more. It was ahead of its time
Mentioning the choice between the microSD and eMMC storage, it would be ideal to use both. The eMMC for the OS, and SD cards for ROMs. I can imaging this would just be a software tweak in the future.
Nope. The RPi CM4 cannot use both at once, it's a hardware shortcoming on the RPi side.
@@AngelaTheSephira that's a shame. I've not had a chance to play with a CM4 yet, electronics shortages and other projects getting in the way.
Wow, this is looks so easy to install! If I ever decide to buy a PSP 1000, I will try to install this Raspberry Pi mod as well.
This would be a great mod for any psp 1001 that have motherboards that are beyond repair you don't have to throw them in the parts bin anymore
So the mod would work with the PSP1001? He said it only worked for the PSP1000.
yes so is it true this can be done psp 1001? Ty all vm !
The world's first one of one nice intro .
Steam deck emulation is on another level. Now it has an oled version so its even better.
An oled or ips screen for Wii U
Production of this video it top notch Tito. Awesome work.
"Can it play PSP games?"
Hahahahah.... noupe...
cAn iT pLAy pSp gAMes??
What is thaaaat??? The intro was legendary! And the video structure and production was pro level! Subscribed, very underated.
@@ZodWriter the adapter from microsd to memorystick does that
You guys rock! I just bought a psp 3000 to bring back my days in middle school but this new add on is going to change the gameplay experience for sure looing forward to a more in depth review of the user interface
The spooky thing is that they removed the PSP gameplay capability...😂
Your production is crazy
Thank you!
This is pretty cool but after putting custom firmware on my psp go not much can beat the form factor. Would be cool to see an emulation machine that has the slide out screen.
there are such options but those are handheld computers and they're on the pricy side.
yo that intro was nioce!!!
Let me help with cons:
That was an awesome intro, dude! And this mod is pretty neat. I still have the original PSP 1000 I bought back in the day.
Question: How much better is the emulation of the Pi compared to a Jailbroken PSP?
For n64 huge difference when I tried mine years ago for the other nintendo consoles nearly non
Wow the production quality on this one was INSANE
I think what would really give a "reason" to this project is finally allowing PSP to access internet without issues(unlike original) and stream games from PC. That would be just amazing to play modern games on old good PSP.
Because as it was described in the video it's rather a curiosity but doesn't add any extra value on top of original console
i've never seen a psp disassembled before, and now i can see why it always feels so dense. because it is! love the og psp
It would be cool to see this on a ps vita or a custom one that slides like the psp go but with like full control support
thats spot on, the PSP Go would be dam near perfect as being totally pocket-able... I second that
Please not the Vita, it's already powerful enough on it's own.
Really one of the most creative intro I saw on Utub. Thanks ^^
Would had been nice if he made one for the PSP Go too. Supporting the original PSP-1000 is okay but most of us don't want to get rid of the UMD drive plus the PSP Go had 16gb of internal storage which Adam could easily utilize.
You flippin crushed that intro 🤙
I don't know if this counts as a "mod", considering there's none of the original hardware there anymore, just the case and buttons. You're not using the Raspberry to upgrade the PSP, you're using the Raspberry to replace the PSP, which is good if the motherboard was already dead, but a waste if the PSP is perfectly repairable, since it's a good console for emulation and homebrew on its own.
I love the spooky Halloween intro, very cool!
This is very cool. But why the hell would someone do this? Why would you kill your console and transform it into a chinese handheld emulation console instead of buying a chinese handheld emulation console for half the price? Unless your PSP is bricked, this is insanity.
This intro was so stylish and gorgeous
I stand by my opinion that this is a terrible and pointless mod. For starters you can install retroarch on a normal PSP. For finishers, it'll play PSP games WORSE than the original hardware. There is literally zero reason to do this. Just put a cm4 in a Retroflag gameboy case. There are 40$ handhelds that are more powerful than this too. Your phone is a better option than this.
I partly agree, the CM5 would blow the PSP out of the park, if he waited a year it would have been 100x better.
You could also get this kit and any missing component and build one from scratch
How was your phone a better option it doesn’t have buttons
@@gabrielbravo2212 connect a Bluetooth controller
or maybe instead of swap psp, he should swap xperia play (which is an old phone that also have physical buttons like psp go)
That Halloween remix of the intro music was sick 🤘🏼
Just gained a new sub for the effort that went into that intro piece
I love how Nacho just drops the CM into the UMD slot at the beginning of the video....
"OMFG!!!! You mean, it's THAT EASY!?!?"
iFixIt is one of my fav companies, and it has helped me get started, and (mostly) fix a Xbox Series X controller that a friend said I could have. I accidentally broke the motion detector, but that doesnt matter to me, and im learning to solder, so ill fix it eventually.
bruh, that intro is next level, SUBBED
Completely crazy project! Very elegant solution and robust implementation. Terrific job by Adam, and spooky Macho Nacho video too! 👻🎃
That being said the original psp already does all these things and more
If it played PS2 or GameCube it would be worth it
This is some Spooky stuff right here. Even the intro was terrifying, I love it. 🎮 👻
Subbed just for the intro. Very well done sir don't change.
Never seen any of your vids before but LOVED the special intro!

PSP will forever be my faborite handheld. I remember before they came out I was in 6th grade and we had an exchange student from China and no BS he had a PSP quite a bit before the launch in the US even happened so once I saw that I just fell in love with it even more. What a marvel it was when it came out, holy. Sooooo sleek too.
It was great. The oled vita was my favorite before the steam deck.
