    I'm sorry, but at 3:37 it says "Clerics use Intelligence as their spellcasting ability"
    That is wrong, they use Wisdom.

      Ah, you're right! I must have missed the small text. Thanks for that.

      Cody Sams no, it says wisdom, both in writing and in the audio.

      Flynn Curtis I never said that the video didn't eventually have the right information
      I merely stated that at the timestamp I included it was wrong. Now click the time stamp and pause. Does it say wisdom?

    • @FlyingDominion
      @FlyingDominion 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Cody Sams I see what you mean now. I didn't pause before clicking the timestamp, so I thought you were talking about the information that popped up right after. My apologies, you are correct.

    Thank you for highlighting clerics as "not just healers." All of my friends get so angry at me when I don't take all the healing spells, and they won't listen when I tell them that's not the cleric's only skill set. Now I can just show them this ^_^

    • @DontStopThinking
      @DontStopThinking  7 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      Yep, there's more to the cleric than meets the eye. I think an all cleric group from different domains can even make a balanced party.

      @yurika12 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      A.J. Draper as a corpsman we were taught the best kind of battlefield medicine is to put enemies down first and fast. I use this mindset when playing my favorite class, the cleric. Plus sometimes the support/defensive magic is more efficient. Like bless, if I had a nickel for each time someone would have missed by one only for bless to make the difference I'd be rich. It works for saving throws too, wich is very nice

      Don't Stop Thinking I don't play much 5e, but it holds true across all editions. I'm playing a cleric of Erastil in Pathfinder who, at first glance, looks for all the world like an Archer Ranger. At least until he summons some Hound Archons as backup, or drops a Holy Smite.

    • @tobiasskudstrup3313

      Clerics don't heal, they "prolong life expectancies" which means that if you can help the party not get hurt you are successful.
      If the enemy can't find you, can't reach you or can't hit you, they can't kill you. There are many more spells that help to achieve this and provides many more rpg opportunities than healing.

      I love that spell (when it works), once we were fighting a giant ass skeleton with an enormous axe, and me, an angelic succubus cleric (don’t ask why), was left alone with him. I was level 1, so I had to swing my old trusty mace and smack him with necrotic damage. And I freaking rolled a fricking 27. So this ángel bitch just almost one shot this giant ass skeleton. He was left 1 hit point away from dying. So then my pal just threw his axe at him. I love clerics.

    • @yurika12
      @yurika12 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't Stop Thinking btw I think there may have been a big advantage to include some mention on consecration spells and material cost to some. If memory serves I belive clerics have the most of both and it would be very beneficial for people to know that they need that 500gp diamond to cast raise dead. Iv seen some people's plans being thwarted because they were aware. Or not being able to have bless and shield of faith on. Etc.
      Not sure if including info like that is part of your prescription for how you structure your videos. But as a veteran Cleric player and to try to help people avoid those mistakes I made. Including some not so intuitive tips may be beneficial. There are more tips for new Cleric players but I think those two I mentioned are more fundamental.

    • @RottenRogerDM

    Trickery has one of the best channel divinity in the whole game! "Invoke Duplicity". It allows you to create a duplicate of yourself and the duplicate can be used to cast spells. Your duplicate can move 120f away from you and start blasting enemies, from a distance it looks and acts just like you, baiting out powerful effects and attacks from other creatures without any risk to yourself. It also gives you advantage on attacks if you're within melee, which means it functions just like Pack Tactics.
    Also you forgot to mention Monk as part of cleric multiclassing.

    • @gabrielrockman
      @gabrielrockman 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Trickery also has the best Domain spell list of any of the Domains. They even get Polymorph. At level 3 they get Mirror Image, which works together quite nicely with Invoke Duplicity.

    im a beginner in DnD and as my first character I started with someone a little unorthodox one might add. I made a female Yaun-ti cleric, and I use the trickery domain to hide her physical appearance from those unaccepting of her race and such. I would say that's one way of using the domain.

  • @DudeYowhatsup
    @DudeYowhatsup 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    A note for the trickery domain cleric: Although, in my opinion, this domain has some appeal to it like being able to help a team that isn't incredible proficient in stealth be able to sneak away with advantage, creating a duplicate yourself (it's only an illusion not real), or turn invisible without using a spell slot with your channel divinity, I would only select this domain for multi-classing. Even then, I would only put 6-7 levels into a trickery domain cleric at maximum (to get 2 pretty powerful spells at lvl 7, or just settle with the channel divinity invisibility). I believe multi-class rouge-cleric would make the best use of what the trickery domain has to offer. The extra spells and traits from the cleric would make for a rouge who can help for getting the party out of dodge when the situation turns dire. Also, the duplicate that can be summoned from the trickery domain acts as a party member for sneak attack (flanking) when you and the duplicate are within 5ft of an enemy.

    • @SoulApollo
      @SoulApollo 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've actually been playing a multiclass character like this and it's a lot of fun if you enjoy playing a more "jack of all trades" type character but still lean towards certain specialities. Our party consists of a Fighter/Warlock, Wizard, Warlock and myself so having someone who can cover all the bases to some degree has been rather helpful. Not to mention you can always find a way to set up your sneak attack whether it be through the duplicate, turning invisible (both channel divinity) or a guiding bolt to set up for the next turn/action point. Having the disengage action can also be really helpful as a caster if you don't have the Warcasting feat.

    "Or just drop the religious aspect altogether". Hmm....
    So an atheist or agnostic cleric? His divine magic comes from his belief that you don't need to worship any gods? That's....A pretty convincing argument if he's still able to cast them.
    I'm guessing that might be a Knowledge or Solidarity Domain (though I can see an argument for it being Trickery)?
    I really like this idea as a character concept.

    • @idiocyincorporated7635
      @idiocyincorporated7635 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I played around with a "logic domain" cleric. His power comes from disbelief rather then belief and focuses on dispelling magic, hurting magical creatures, and providing knowledge/experience buffs to himself and the party.
      I also made a "god" of logic that insists he isn't a god, as well as rewards followers for sound well thought out arguments and theories.

    I actually have to disagree with the concept of the trickery archetype. Not every class has to have self benefits and can just benefit the party. It allows a character who has no real stealth potential to benefit another player who has the ability, and maybe potentially already good at stealth to lend them a hand for free. Perhaps the party just has one scout character who would appreciate any help they can get, hell could be your party doesn't have a stealth character or the fighter has heavy armor that would normally give him disadvantage. Trickery archetype is something I put on a Barbarian Gnome when we needed healing and help with stealth. Just a few examples for you to think about, but Jo Folly the Gnome Barbarian/Trickery Cleric sends his regards.

    • @DontStopThinking
      @DontStopThinking  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You're right Ragoth, in a cohesive party with the right composition, the trickster cleric can be pretty useful. But it does get frustrating when all the conditions are not met, especially for a group of new players.

    • @yurika12
      @yurika12 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Ragoth T. It's all relative. It highly depends on party make up and campaign setting. I think what he meant, and I agree with, that it's more niche than the other architypes.

    • @FlyingDominion
      @FlyingDominion 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think the campaign is an important thing to factor in as well. In an unlawful party, this is the prime domain. Charm Person at 1st level and Disuse Self will both get plenty of use, Blink at 5th is really nice, and we shouldn't gloss over Dominate Person at 9th level. This domain is perfect for subterfuge, misdirection, and infiltration.

    • @AbsoluteMongoloid
      @AbsoluteMongoloid 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Trickery domain doesn't just focus on stealth. Stealth is just extra fluff for them. The real bread and butter lies in their illusions. Making use of full cover, corners and anything else too big to require a stealth roll gives you time to Disguise Self, Invoke Duplicity, or any number of options. Hide in plain sight, as they say. If you can get Minor Illusion via Magic Initiate, you can even hide inside your own Illusion, then Invoke Duplicity and leave as your Duplicate. No one would suspect a thing, unless they touch you. The Trickery Domain doesn't just include ninjas or whatever. They charm, dominate, and teleport their way into their goals.

    For multiclassing
    1 level of cleric, life domain
    Grants heavy armor proficiency, increase in minimum amount heal, bless, cure wounds and 1 other 1st level cleric spell
    Then you can go as another full caster the rest of the levels
    You can dump wis in this case if you start cleric too
    And just invest on either in or cha
    Dont forget to have 15 str minimum for the best heavy armor though

  • @beastwarsFTW
    @beastwarsFTW 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    For multiclassing a cleric I would say monk although I think that works better on druids but still you get an armor bonus based on you casting stat but it does help more when you can't have metal armor.

    • @DontStopThinking
      @DontStopThinking  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am not too sure about Monks because they can't use their martial arts feature if they have any piece of armor on them or wield a shield. Multiclassing as monks is almost like having two different class in one rather than a complementary fit.

    trickery clerics is actually one of the best cleric domain. While their abilities are lackluster, their domain spells are all very powerful spells that don't figure on the cleric spell list. Clerics are casters first so domain spells are one the most important feature of a domain. Some highlights include pass without trace, which can turn the whole party into rogues, and polymorph who's the best 4th level spell in the game and one of the best "healing" spell too, as well as dimension door. The class feature also combo well with pass without trace, by nullifying the disadvantage of heavy armor wearing fighters, and wearing only light armor isn't that much of a problem when you're a stealthy high dexterity character allowing. In essence a trickery cleric not only is good at stealth, it makes everyone good at stealth too allowing ambush tactics and not having to split the party when scouting. Take the urchin background and it makes the rogue obsolete.
    And all of that on a cleric chassis, who can do respectable damage per round using spells such as spirit guardians and spiritual weapon.

    Trickery is generally agreed on as the least useful Cleric domain. BTW, when you multiclass, you don't get all of the proficiencies of your second class - no class grants heavy armor proficiency when you multiclass into it(P164, PHB). I play a Hill Dwarf Life Cleric now, but would love to try Tempest someday - wrath of the storm makes it more acceptable to sacrifice the shield for a maul.

    • @thebloggingchef

      shmuckling If you multiclass into Cleric, you get to pick your domain immediately as all Clerics do at 1st level. If you pick the Life domain, you get heavy armor proficiency.

      app.roll20.net/compendium/dnd5e/Character%20Advancement#content Roll20, Character Advancement: It's not the 5E PHB, but it's as close to it as you can get online - halfway down this page is "Multiclassing" and the "multiclassing proficiencies table". Read the text above it and notice how other classes that get heavy armor proficiency by default, like the Fighter and Paladin, also don't grant heavy armor proficiency when multiclassed into. You get to keep all the proficiencies of your original class, but all the other classes you multiclass into don't grant the same proficiencies as if you started with them. The simple way around that is to decide which proficiencies matter to you and your character and start with that class first. Or just ask the DM to house rule it.

    • @shmuckling
      @shmuckling 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand that the Domains of Cleric make it seem like different Domains might get different multiclassing proficiencies, but what about the Fighter and Paladin? While you can build both a Dex or Str fighter, Dex Paladins with Dex-based armor are a lot less common, as the Paladin lacks the Archery fighting style and Smite is a melee weapon mechanic. If the Paladin doesn't grand heavy armor when multiclassed into, it would be kind of weird if the Cleric did... just my 2c.

    • @thebloggingchef
      @thebloggingchef 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You would still get the heavy armor proficiency because is has to do with the class path, not the class in general. The whole point of multiclassing is to get the classes bonus, one of which is heavy armor with a particular domain.

    • @shmuckling
      @shmuckling 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting... I guess I'd buy that. That puts Clerics on a whole new level as a class and nobody would be happier about that than me - I love Clerics and would love to multiclass into a heavy armor domain every time I'm playing a class that doesn't get it. I already felt that the Clerics were one of the best designed and most powerful classes in 5E - counting this in, they are far above any other class on my list. This would make them the only class that grants heavy armor proficiency when muticlassed into... that I can think of.

    This guide is awesome, so are all your other ones, its clear than you put so much effort in kudos to you! I chose A life cleric of the campaign I am in It is me a barbarian and a warlock I do find that I am constantly running out of spell slots though. I like to get us bless and then just go crazy with my warhammer or use the cantrips in xanathars + sacred flame if I cant take much more damage or if I know the save will be bad against the monsters. I emergency heal when I can but it does feel like I cant do much alot of the time, I am level 4 now but feel scared to use up spell slots in case someone needs them or I have already used them. Any advice?

      Thanks for the speedy reply! Its the other 2 players 1st/2nd campaign I will let them know to stock up more. I hadn't even thought of using more on myself which I had been using them on the other 2 haha. I do wish there was a healing cantrip though, even if it was terrible it would feel like there was an option other than spare the dying and healing potions when those spell slots are gone.

    Awesome video man! I am learning D&D and will get my friends in it, and one of them wants to a be a cleric, so yeah! :D
    Just one question i have. The spell slots. Are they like "the amount of spells a character can know for specific level spells" (so unlimited amount of casts), or are they "the amount of spells a character can cast from each level"? (which means that at level 1 they can cast, say, 5 spells and then long rest for more)

    • @DontStopThinking
      @DontStopThinking  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The spell themselves have levels, like the spell raise dead is a level 5 spell (which Clerics actually learn at cleric class level 9). To cast it, you need to use level 5 spell slot. But you can also use higher levelled spell slot like level 6 spell slot to cast it.

    • @vinnregi4882
      @vinnregi4882 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      So spell slots are like "cubes of mana". Higher value ones can be used for lower value spells, but not the other way around. And once used, they get depleted and need to be restored. Awesome, thank you! :D (that explains why cantrips have unlimited number of casts!)

  • @NikELbErGErBergel

    Hey, i want to multiclass from wizard into cleric, which domain do you guys think would work best?

    • @Longlius
      @Longlius 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Life, grave, death. Probably the first one. Most of the cleric's domains have bonus spells you can pick up as a wizard (or something comparable). Stay away from Arcana and Knowledge (which are kind of soft-multiclass options for clerics who want wizard stuff) - their bonus spells are already on your list.
      In general though, I'd recommend against multiclassing from wizard to cleric. In fact, I'd advise against multiclassing at all. The wizard gets its best stuff at the higher levels, and most of the classes you can multiclass into will give you a bad case of MAD (since almost no classes outside of the wizard make use of intelligence which you've presumably been pumping).
      A decent choice instead of a full multiclass is a dip into one level of cleric to get some of the goodies that come with divine domains. For a one level dip, you get medium armor and shield proficiencies. If you're only dipping, then ignore my advice above - the knowledge domain is worth pursuing for the two free skill proficiencies (the bonus spells will already be on your list though, which is the main feature of domains). You get access to the fantastic Guidance cantrip as well as the phenomenal first level spell Bless. If the knowledge domain isn't your thing, then check out the War, Forge, or other martial-oriented domains. You don't get the free skill proficiencies, but you still pick up Guidance and Bless, and you also get heavy armor and martial weapon proficiencies.
      As well as the dip, you should pick up the War Caster feat with one of your ABIs. Medium armor means you'll probably be wading into combat more, which means you need to be able to cast while holding a weapon. In addition, war caster gives you advantage on checks to maintain your concentration, which is absolutely vital if you're going into melee range.

  • @ollininvincible
    @ollininvincible 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I'm quite sad about the Trickery Domain being lackluster. I expected more out of it. Back when I was considering it, I thought multiclassing would make it work but the ability score spread is too problematic. Shadow Monk or rogue seems like the most logical fit for it but giving up channel divinity strength/divine intervention to just be 2% more awesome is a waste of time. Maybe Wotc will release a reasonable unearthed arcana redo of it in the future.

    • @yurika12
      @yurika12 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ollininvincible it's a niche domain. Which makes it great for some scenarios and me for others. If your campaign revolves around being sneaky bandits one of you may want to be a trickery cleric, rather than any of the other architypes.

    • @ollininvincible
      @ollininvincible 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends upon the classes of the players in one's group. Given that rogues have the easiest access to a high stealth, those sneaky bandits should have probably gone rogue in the first place. And because pass without a trace falls into spellcaster's hands quickly, it still makes the buffs from the trickery domain next to useless.
      That being said, I'd like to see a Naruto style update of the trickery domain. It began with this flavor but it ultimately fell flat, especially compared to other domains which are far more powerful.

    • @Goombalove3000
      @Goombalove3000 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      As a DM to a group with a trickery cleric, I would say the main draw to them is to get a backline caster with much more survivability options and a healer/support spellcaster, all rolled into one. The party also had a paladin and druid/barbarian, who provided a solid front line, and a monk/rouge, who provided high damage, so the additional support was excellent. in my opinion, the trickster cleric is the best choice for someone who wants to play the cleric in the back line, as they get far more survivability based spells than the other domains. plus it really lets you get some great roleplaying potential as they learn mind control based spells at later levels.

    • @ollininvincible
      @ollininvincible 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Meh, I wrote a huge rant. Don't wanna rant. Deleted it. hahaha I guess if your player is having fun that's all that matters. Good call on the bonus action though. I'd kill off concentration on it too. That would open the character up for some great combos like casting dominate person while not being present in the room, as well as tossing up polymorphed T-Rex and then walking the duplicate into a pile of goblins. Good times, good times. But I think those changes need to be made first. As is, it's kinda lackluster compared to a tempest cleric/druid multiclass that can deal an instant 40hp of damage for fun without hurting for slots afterward. ^_^

Trickery is good for Bard or Rogue classes allowing another person to sneak around with you to complete tasks. War Cleric basically works well with any class that you want to be more damage focused Fighter, Rogue, and Ranger all work well with War Cleric Multiclass.

      Remember the wording
      Preparing spells
      Some casters like clerics and paladins
      Can change their current spells with others within their class spell list
      That can happen after a long rest before starting the day
      So in case someone died within a week? Prepare raise dead
      Short on food and water?
      Prepare the spell called create food and water, maybe use prestidigitation cantrip if anyone has it to make the food taste better
      Clerics arent just about healing, they have very useful spells for other purposes too
      Anyway preparing spells give the player less pressure to chose what spell they want as they can change them after a long rest anyway
      Unlike say the bard or sorcerer where they cant change their spells after a long rest
      Once they pick the spells they are stuck with it unless they level up to change their spells
