Kitten Therapy

  • New program has Pima County residents with memory issues caring for newborn kittens. Every year Pima Animal Care Center takes in roughly 20,000 animals, mostly dogs and cats. Newborn kittens can be problematic for any shelter because they need round the clock care and have weak immune systems. Residents at Catalina Springs Memory Care, along with staff, acted as a collective foster family for two kittens in a pilot project that will expand in the future. Project manager Rebecca Hamilton calls it “a perfect use of resources for the good of both.”

the lady in the blue sweater can't remember the kitten arriving for the programme but she remembers that she loves it 🥺 and that's the most important part

This is fantastic! What a great idea kittens get a place to stay until their forever home and the residents of the Catalina Springs get to enjoy little bundles of fluff!

This is genius. A bunch of people with time to give and love to give and no outlet for it, it's a perfect opportunity to foster. Nice work guys!

As usual, Best Friends leads the way in innovations that help more beloved cats and kittens to find loving, forever homes -- and this one not only socializes and fosters kittens, something that is top priority to shelters worldwide, but also helps cognitively impaired people to engage in a very important activity -- saving precious lives!

Why doesn't this have more views and comments? This is brilliant!
I've heard that seniors with memory loss benefit a lot from having a responsibility and a routine.
Who needs to be bottle-fed every two hours? Motherless kittens. Who has trouble sleeping at night and having a purpose during the day? The elderly!
    Classical win-win situation!

The effectiveness of this type of animal therapy has been known to facilities that care for senior citizens for a long time.I gave a kitten to an assisted living center at least 20 years ago ( the worker said they had cats there before). I don't understand why such beneficial and cost-effective programs aren't common today in this country.

I really love this idea, and it's better in a situation like this where there are people who can take on some of the other things that kittens eventually need. But if pets lower blood pressure make us happier calm has down, I fail to see how this could not be an amazing thing for anyone involved great work and I hope it continues

Those programs are excellent, everybody wins. And now there are several prisons that are doing the same, with the result that the inmates feel way less excluded, and violence inside the prisons went down considerably.

Very heart-warming 😍😇 wished I could give my dad a kitten for his anger management therapy, I love cats, have 9 of them 😍😍,but my dad absolutely hates cats, when he sees one coming close, he'll kick it😭😭. He himself already beginning to lose his memory due to his age and becoming more antisocial because he kept thinking he doesn't forget anything, but he does, and when we tell him that,he gets really annoyed and tells everyone to just stay away from him. I feel so sad and sorry for him. I seriously don't know how to help him with this type of therapy coz he just simply hates cats. Any suggestions??

Perhaps, his hatred towards them is built on things that aren't true (about cats...)...?

Old age homes will thrive if animals can be incorporated in living facilities
Many old people are separated from their animals when moving into a home
    That is so cruel
Some die of heart break when their animals have to stay behind
