Welcome to the Cool Zone™. This video was delayed by being out of town for several week and a multi-day fever, but it's finally out! I don't have a lot to say about this one, I'm mostly just glad to move onto the next project. Moving forward, my plan is to alternate between these kinds of video essays and documentaries. Will I stick with it? Who knows!

I think in an ideal world, companies that make online-only games with centralized servers should be forced to open-source when a game shuts down, or at the very least, release the server hosting and infrastructure tools to the community. There's a reason TF2 is still one of the most-played games on Steam despite it not receiving a major update since 2017.

    • @poke_
      @poke_ ปีที่แล้ว +10

@@cheesefriesandgangsigns I think part of it is that they view all other online games as competition, even including their own abandoned ones. So from that perspective, leaving the game alive *does* lose them money, because one player continuing to play an old game is a player who could *instead* be playing the new one (the one with regular seasons, battle passes, cash shops, currency, etc).
It's just an endless cycle of trying to squeeze every last penny out of players, killing the game, and then starting over.

  • @Ardrid_

    Very good video.
The point about developers being able to shut down games at any point is especially relevant now with the recent announcement of Rumbleverse's shutdown. It doesn't really matter how unique a game is, if it is launched as a live service there's always that risk that low playercounts and poor revenue will cause the execs up top to make years of a developers hard work inaccessible.
I think an area thats surprisingly unexplored in keeping games relevant despite how old it is, is modding. Games like Skyrim and Smash Bros. Brawl should have "died" years ago, but due to their incredibly large and passionate modding scenes, those games will continue to see new life until those modders eventually move on. Same reason why TF2 is still one of the most played games on steam despite 15 years passing and very few updates for ages; its because theres always some new map, mode or whatever a modder can think of to make the game feel fresh.
Maybe Unreal Engine 5's ease of access and rampant adoption into developer pipelines will have the same effect Source Engine had, where players will be able to easily mod their favourite games because the games engine is easily publically available and highly documented. We'll have to wait and see though.

Found this channel from the Tom Scott video, decided to give some of the videos a watch :)
This video really speaks to me as someone who is part of the online community for the game Unreal (not Unreal Tournament, the ORIGINAL 1998 Unreal), which has probably around 100 or so people left who play it online. It really doesn't help that a few months ago Epic took the game down from all online stores so it has effectively become abandonware. But yeah, Epic shut down the servers and abandoned Unreal long ago, and it has only survived through the community making their own patches and hosting their own master servers. I like to think we're still keeping it alive.

I didn't know that the deep blue chess game made people think that chess was about to become a dead game that's wild
Yesterday I saw a video "We can't let meta get away with this" about how Meta just killed Echo Vr, one of the most beloved vr games with a passionate thriving community and they won't even allow peer to peer servers continue to play
This reminds me of an old post where someone asked if they should get into Smash 4 or Melee, they wanted to choose the game that would last the longest. One reply said that even if humanity was hit with an apocalypse and living in caves you will still find a setup of a crt and modded wii running super smash brothers melee for the nintendo gamecube

Please keep up this type of content. I would love to watch a video like 'The Greatest Underdog Story in Melee History' with commentary (doesn't mean I didn't like the commentary-less video, it was amazing how a video without commentary kept me watching for 30 minutes even though I had no interest in melee, and literally made me get up off my chair in that final match).

A multi-field study into esports occurred at Mount Royal University a while ago. It found the largest appeal of esports is that all players (professional or not) have access to the same gameplay experience, unlike physical sports where only pros can access professional-grade play-spaces and equipment. This makes it far easier for fans to invest in professional gameplay, because they directly understand the pro's experience.
It also found the largest threat to esports was the nature of every "sport" being owned and created by single corporations. No corporation owns the rules of professional soccer, no corporation can change the rules of professional baseball. Likewise nobody can suddenly release "Baseball 2" and completely disrupt the established baseball enterprises. The fluid and fickle nature of video games makes esports far less predictable than regular sports, which makes them difficult to invest in and grow. Esports just can't seem to build the sort of long-running stories and communities that physical sports have developed.

Ok so I love smash bros lots and lots, so this video appeals a lot to me. However, I think you may have an over-reliance on using Smash as an example/point. This is great for me, since I love smash, but for the wider gamer audience you’re targeting, the frequent use of smash as a talking point could be grating. Your videos are very funny and well made, though. I just wanted to offer a minor critique since I love your videos so much and want your to succeed. Hopefully my advice is helpful and not just TH-cam commenter bullshit. Still a cool video.

I wouldn’t worry too much about it - I try to follow as many scenes as I can, but Melee is what I know best, so it will always be what I default to for examples. I think this is representative of who I am as a person, so things will change if my personal expression does, but otherwise I think of this channel as having like 20% Melee DNA.
Videos that focus on a singular individual or event are where I will do more to highlight and dive deeper into other games/communities. Thanks for the comment!
