I've been living in Tokyo for a year now, and I agreed so much with everything you just said here.
Pro n°1 : the sweet everyday life (walking around easily, having access to everything almost 24/7, finding gems at every corner, enjoying all seasons and times of the year)

I'm a native Southern Californian and still living there and I'm considering moving to Tokyo in the future, so this video was really good for me!! When you mentioned how excited you were about the four seasons, *I* got excited too!! I love California but it really is just... Hot and slightly less hot. This was such a helpful video, thank you!
Your top is so darling I love it. Also your makeupppp 💖 I lived in Japan for a short period and number one pro was a tie between safety and convenience of everything and con was probably the humidity and this feeling of like… disappearing amongst all the people. Remaining connected and having a good support system is really important. I intend to return as soon as I can though. 💕
Thank youuu it’s from GU!🥰 and I agree, Tokyo is SO convenient for almost everything! But I also totally get what you mean about feeling like you disappear in the crowd. Constantly being surrounded by so many people can ironically become very isolating and lonely!😦 meaningful relationships and community are definitely key!!

I’ve been thinking about moving to Japan for a while, and I’ve decided ❤️❤️
I lived in Cardiff for a year in school and I really miss how walkable it was, and Europe was in general. I’m in Seattle and we’re definitely still a car-centric city. I dream of a day where I don’t need a car (and all the headaches that come with it, like parking etc).
I think it’s nice you can live a little further out from the city center of Tokyo because the public transport is good enough to get you into the city if you need! Here at least, going into the city center is an ordeal because you either need to drive, or get to the park and rides early enough for parking and bus in.
I’ve always wanted to visit Seattle! But ya America is WAY behind on sufficient public transportation. I do miss driving but I love how reliable and convenient the subway system is in Japan!

i lived in japan for three summers (and OOf was it brutal) and oh man the roaches... i really never thought i'd see a roach in japan since it's so clean everywhere but those bishes are HUGE.
#1 pro would def be the public transportation!
#1 con would be gender gap/work culture - as someone who is planning to move to japan after paNDEMi lovato (also that's SO funny i cackled) from the U.S., i do worry about the culture differences. but there are always trade-offs right! c:

Yes we can never escape those darn roaches!😖 I used to live on the 1st floor and I saw way more roaches, now I live on a higher floor and we only saw 1 this year!
And ya the gender gap can be so overwhelming sometimes but the benefits of living in Japan help me push through!😭
I think my sister would agree with you about the humidity. Back in the early 2000's she and my brother-in-law lived in Okinawa, because he was stationed there for the Air Force. From I remember her telling me, she felt miserable being pregnant during the monsoon season, and said the walls and ceilings were dripping from the humidity. Unfortunately I never got the chance to visit her there, because by the time I was trying to save up to go, they moved back to our home state of Washington.
Oh my goodness I couldn’t imagine being pregnant during monsoon season!😵 I heard Okinawa is beautiful though, I’d love to visit one day too!

Is it possible to work a half-time job in Japan ? Like to cover basic necesities but still have time to enjoy life there ?
When I lived in a share house one of my roommates was from France! He was in Japanese language school and came for a semester (I think 3~4 months).
I worked part-time my last 2 years living in Japan and I was able to pay all of my living expenses because I kept my rent low! You can find affordable rent if you live in a share house in Tokyo:) plus you get roommates so it never feels lonely!
I just stumbled on your channel writing down tips and advice you mention on your. I would love to visit Japan, stay for 3-6 months to get better understanding. I would not want to live in Japan for a long time. I love central air/heat; it’s pricey to use too much electric. Washer & dryer, just fast. Large portions, I just save a lot more foods. Yes, living abroad help you more ways than one
I like how everyone is complaining about the summer but I love hot summer weather. Not so much at night when im sleeping tho. Id probably hate the winters without insulation the most
I visited Japan a.few years ago. My pros would be the food, people are so kind and respectful. Temples, nature, geisha culture. Shopping , onsen baths transport so clean and reliable . Cons taxis can be v expensive. Scam restaurant s. Where you , have to buy , a certain amount of drinks.

I’ve only visited Japan for 2 weeks as a tourist, so can only comment from that point of view, but I felt so safe there and was amazed at how clean it was. Compared to the UK, there seems to be a lot more respect for the environment and the environment of those around you. I loved that. I visited in June 2019, it was boiling hot 🥵 But absolutely beautiful. I visited Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto. I think Kyoto was my favourite but loved loved loved Osaka and Tokyo.
Also, so funny you mentioned Mexican food. We ate at a little tiny restaurant at Shinjuku Station. It was lovely but the tacos were tiny! 😂 The station area was having a lot of construction work at the time so no idea if it’s still there!
@manny I think I took about £1000 spending money (not sure on exchange rates!). My boyfriend did too. Also took my payment card which I did use once as I bought a Nintendo Switch which I hadn’t bargained for. But yeah, around £1000 each. Can’t remember how much yen that converted to but I didn’t come back with much.
the worst cityies in japan.
For me, what outweighs the brutal summers are the AMAZING WINTERS. Winters are very dry and sunny, unlike in Europe where it rains all the time. Winters are known for their beautiful scenery views (of Mt Fuji for example). So if you have winter depression Tokyo is for you ;)

Oh dear...😵Then Japan in the summer is like Singapore. 😭Nobody ever said Japan has cockroaches on TH-cam. In Singapore, cockroaches are all year round & they are sooo freaky!!! I had 3 cans of the best & fastest-killing bug killer in my apartment so that I could reach out for a spray whenever a cockroach flies in through the window. They run & hide fast if the bug killer don't get them first. I had to close all my windows at night and bear with the heat.
Ohh right No one ever mentions roaches. In US there are bugs come out in summer/spring but the roaches dont fly *at least*

Ya, every place has it’s trade offs! Just depends on what you prioritize and if the pros outweigh the cons :)

I agree about moving abroad. The UK was mine (my mum moved us here as kids) but I dreamed of living in Japan when I was younger. I don’t know where the years flew to but I got married and had a kid and now it’d be a little more difficult moving my family along too rather than just me. I’m loving my slow attempt at learning the language but I doubt my husband and daughter would welcome the challenge 😂. I don’t know, it way still happen. We’re hoping to visit next year so watch this space 😆

@@leilanirika sorry only just spotted this 🙈 the UK is great depending on what you’re after. If you’re a city lover then there are some great cities to live in. Somewhere like Brighton offers an in between- a large town near the sea.
These will be very London centric as that’s where I live but I have travelled to various places across the UK.
Pros for me: multicultural hub, incredible food; close to Europe (even if the relationship is a little tense post brexit 😭); we already speak English so no need for a new language 😂 very moderate - in terms of weather, wildlife; progressive; architecture is beaut (hello York, Oxford, Bath and like a thousand villages); freedom of expression (of every kind); the N.H. frigin S! (Free healthcare); everyday people have no access to guns; all of the artists perform here…I could probably think of more…
Cons for me so far: London is crowded and expensive to live in (although I imagine Tokyo would prepare you for it); temperate weather means often not great weather but the last few years we’ve had a lot of sun - just not in the actual summer 😭; Londoners aren’t generally friendly unless they have cause to (outside of London though people are quite lovely lol); racism is a definitely a thing; there are definitely places you don’t go by yourself at night; Europeans will hate you for being from here 😭

* traumatic memory of getting attacked by a flying roach when I was a kid flashbacks * 😳 You've basically just described summers there are a hell on earth to me. Unbearable humid heat with basically no insulation and roach galore? Nope. The biggest of NOPES.
By the way you can kill them but oh gawd the crunch 😨 ok, shutting up now. But if anyone needs to know, there's a cleaning chemical called Awesome and the old formula was much stronger so it could actually kill roaches with about 3 direct sprays. I also once resorted to practically boiling hot water and that roach met an instant toasty death.
I could never with the insane work culture there. No individual person owes their life or health to a corporation (or business of any size). I would probably get fired there for calling out something a higher up said, directly to the higher up. 😅 And for getting up and actually leaving at the time my shift technically ends. No free overtime for you, wealthy company.
I sincerely hope that improves there because people aren't robots you can work to death. Just because people there are socialized to be less likely to talk about how they're truly feeling, doesn't mean they're not suffering mentally.
And want me to send you some posole and authentic Mexican tacos? 😅 I know we're spoiled in Southern California with access to all kids of foods.

I was completely okay with all the cons until the flying cockroaches made an entry NOPE not those as i had probably one of the worst experience with them in an elevator and the entire building thought I was being harassed, but I literally was by a big ass MF flying 🪳 here in Dubai, was in a shock and stayed home for week to just recover. It might sound dramatic but no its not

as a mexican who dreams of living in japan i don't think i'd be able to survive without authentic mexican food 🫠🫠
It really depends on the company some companies compensate for the working hours for long paid vacation breaks but that rare most don’t and this is only if your like an English teacher as a foreigner I’m scared to get on crowded trains cuz they usually don’t get up close to me they will get up from their seats but not always this man feel asleep on my shoulder once summers here are way too hot and the winters are way too cold I love that the food is so healthy and it’s suspicious how long it takes for American groceries to expire but Japanese takes like 2 days something tells me we weren’t eating real food in America😬 and Tokyo apartments are way so expensive I’m glad I saved up like 8k before moving here imma use just half of that trying to move into my apartment🥲
