That game was full of missed calls
So many missed calls both ways. It was pretty abismal.. and I am a fan of both teams. Hate seeing any game ending like this.
Kelly Sutherland will do that lol
I think both teams had very legitimate complaints about the refs last night. Something needs to be done because these missed calls are beyond ridiculous.
These playoffs are full of horrible calls and missed calls
Its called “playoff hockey” for all the new jacks .
These summaries are wonderful. A nine minute breakdown with insightful commentary. Better than any content on ESPN or TSN.
This guy is brilliant. I feel like I can be an NHL coach with these explanations. Brilliant !
Agree!
facts
ESPN? You couldn’t pay me to watch that channel. They used to play sports. Now they leverage Disney money to lecture their viewers on how to be a good lefti- - I mean person. Independent creators will soon run this game and I think it’s nigh time for it.
@@cnam1258 Agreed, just gained a new subscriber!
Sutherland needs to be fired!! You can’t ref that crappy game after game
He refs the game the way the league wants. All the refs do. Blame the league not the zebras doing what they are told
Dude let Mcdavid slide on a double minor and then another penalty nearly 2min later
All refs need to be fired. They have been brutal in the bruins panthers series too. Bad calls and missed calls everywhere
true. oilers got hosed BAD
Hughes face got in the way of his stick. Cmon 🤬
It's not just the missed calls, but the seemingly random inconsistent calls. Something that drew a whistle 2 minutes ago gets ignored, while refs spin the wheel to decide what soft call to make next on guys behind the play that have no impact on the game.
Classic playoff reffing. Penalties happen, but they dont want penalties to decide the game. Missed calls, make up calls. The refs are talking to the players all game, they know what theyre doing
And how many NHL games have you reffed ?
@@BradSchoenfailed the same number of NHL games youve watched
If a game can not be officiated then perhaps the game itself is flawed
@@Playsinvain who ever said hockey was perfect?
Even as an oilers fan, I was surprised that they missed the Mcdavid high stick. Pretty blatant.
The puck was right there SOMEONE had to have seen it as they have to watch the play as it happens. Insane that it was missed. Oh well on to the next, just another chapter in the why Canuck fans hate Sutherland book.
@@chrisgoodings4450 They did see it. They said it was follow-through. From the guy who didn't have the puck. It's McDavid, they're not going to stick him in the box for 4 minutes.
@bblvrable a follow through 😂 the player with the puck hadn't moved the puck by the time Hughes hits the ice. Regardless of whatever missed calls for either team there were that one is absolute garbage.
@staeit 1 thanks for being logical and not saying Hughes needs to man up
So noone is noticing the Vancouver player, forcing his left elbow on McDavid's stick, pushing it in a diagonal angle backwards and slightly up, then faceplanting on the end of it?
Just start the video from scratch and you will notice is.
Kelly Sutherland has been miserable these entire playoffs
his entire career*
You realize this is the playoff standard and it goes both ways.
He’s bleeding. Huddle. Re evaluate. Make the call. 4:00 minute
That is exactly what happened in the avs vs winnipeg series when toews got his nose smashed by high stick. So maybe a broken nose is what it takes for the refs to call anything on the leagues golden boy.
Call what though? If they thought it was the RNH shot follow through, it’s not a penalty. You want them just guessing out there? They missed it, that’s all.
Other sports do it, why can't the NHL?
McDavid never shot or passed. There was no follow through.
That high stick was an absolute joke, how can a guy be bleeding like that and not get a call. Frustrating
The play was right there too, so all the officials should of been looking that way. They all should be suspended or fired for not doing their jobs. If we all made mistakes like this at our work, we would all face discipline.
Keep McDavid off the ice for longer than 2 minutes? No way the NHL allows that.
I mean Suter in game 1, with 7 minutes left blatantly grabs the puck in mid air and throws it the opposite direction out of the defensive zone. That was a pretty frustrating missed penalty call that lead to the 4-4 goal. What an absolute joke.
Vancouver gets away with literally throwing the puck with their hand lol. Also too many men on the ice for one of their goals. A clear tripping on McDavids goal as well.
Classic playoff reffing. Hughes and his supplicants need to stiffen their collective upper lip
That's was a nice goal in overtime by Ian Cole
Literally had his blade facing the net…like wtf
And he was the only screen on a goal in game 1, and he redirected another in game 1... 3 goals, 100% his fault in two games.
Why need Hyman, when you got Cole in front.
Was one of the easiest tips I’ve ever seen! Why was nobody defending him?
Cole has been a liability so far this series. Can't stand him
That missed high sticking call is criminal
Yep. So was the cross check by Zadorov that almost took out Draisaitl, and did take him out for the rest of game 1. Funny how Karma works, isn't it.
@@LARGO125 cry harder that game 1 was hell of a lot cleaner for both teams. This one that missed call likely would have won the nucks the game mcdavid in the box for 4 mins and it would have been a 5 on 3 for ~45 seconds.
3:07
@@LARGO125 thats like saying the reason desmith was out was cuz of the nashville hit, how surface level are you
@@colonelcase6193by that logic, we give the oilers powerplays for too many men and the highstick on Hyman? Oilers could easily score 2 PP goals there.
I think we should just shush it. Both sides. I know the officiating is bad and you're mad that you lost and think you would have won if all pens were actually called, but listen. You only had 2 shots in the 3rd period. Just like Edmonton in game 1, Canucks just didnt deserve to win that game, plain and simple. If you are good enough, you should be able to score 5 on 5 too and not just on the PP. You had overtime and the whole game to score at least 1 more. And you didnt. Thats the way it goes.
This series is brutal to watch as a hockey viewer. Way too many missed calls on both ends, and even as an Oilers fan, Vancouver got the shorter end of the stick for the officiating.
Expecting more of a bloodbath next game, but I feel like both teams will be exhausted come around game 4.
Classic playoff reffing. Hughes and his supplicants need to stiffen their collective upper lip
Agreed, not sure why but seems like Hughes can't get a single call his way. Gets absolutely bullied in both series so far. Bad calls and missed calls all over the place. Oilers definitely deserved to win with how they played but my God just call a penalty a penalty ffs.
As a fan of neither team, I’d say Edmonton got hit pretty bad too. The Hyman missed higher stick, and the too many men missed call before Zadorov scored were both huge calls that could have made a big difference for Edmonton.
@mcthunderstick2374
A huge call is 4 minutes without the best player in the world on the ice while his team is down 3-2 down a man.
@@tjpenney3911 a huge call is 4 minutes powerplay for the strongest PP in the league.
"John Shorthouse is good enough for hockey night in Canada broadcast!" Change my mind sportsnet.
He can't get the gig because they decided the young golden boy from Alberta, Harnaryan, is their man
Ugh, I hate that it's still called that. It's such an ill fitting skin suit of Hockey Night in Canada. And yes he should be calling these games
Oilers fan here. Should have been a high stick call. The officiating was pretty bad in general this game. I still think we would have won considering shot comparisons, but bro was bleeding, that should have been a call.
Bad officiating both ways, non call on the high stick was brutal. That doesn’t change the Canucks were pinned down in their zone the last 20 minutes of the game
No but it would have helped if they had scored a PP goal or two before that but agree bad calls both ways or really what it is, is lack of consistency.
I feel like the missed high stick call was kinda a wash as hyman got high sticked by zadorof in the first period, also the missed too many men on the ice right before Zadorofs goal. Kinda evened it out. Although no high stick should be missed as it's dangerous
Hockey is the worst of the professional sports I watch for blatantly missing calls and refusing to deal with them.
It doesn't typically excuse losses - but it makes it really difficult to take the rules seriously when half of the officiating is arbitrary.
@@toedrag-release what about the spear by ryan on hoglander? that should be 5 and a game misconduct
@@vancity2414 what about Myers slamming Desharnais head into the boards while slew footing him? Bad calls on both ends

As a canucks fan, oilers deserved to win 100%. You cant expect to win when you get outshot 16-3 in the third, although the no call on the highstick was ridiculous
How about last game when oilers got 6 shots in 2 periods?
@@andycoman1265they didn’t deserve to win that one, and they didn’t
They missed the high stick on hyman as well so it evened out in the end on that one
@@maekklyn no it didn't lol. For hyman it wasn't as clear as it was a pile up and could have been anyones stick. With huges it was a 1v1 making it a lot easier to see the play

That slewfoot by Kane was so egregious
I love your site. I don't have time to watch all of the games, but you manage to put together a great synopsis of the games. Thank you.
Cole should be scratched at this point he’s single handedly given Edmonton 3 goals in 2 games including an ot winner
Both Canucks and oilers have the absolute ability to win the cup. This is probably the most exciting series there will be. Unless one of them v Florida or Dallas. Good series. Looking forward to the next game.
Any team has the ability, but both these teams doesn't look strong. Look at Rangers and how they are playing right now and compare. There is no comparison. LOL.
@@sucraf1 Canucks, Oilers and the Bruins are outmatched and need to get very lucky to win the cup
As a Canucks fan, there is no chance either or these teams win the cup. Oilers are absolutely garbage on their defense and goaltending. And the only reason the Canucks may lose this series is that they are trying to play at their pace, instead of playing/controlling their game. That, and no demko.
As an oilers and canucks fan, I can’t see them winning against most of the teams left
I appreciate your opinion but let's be real here: the Rangers are too much for either of them......let alone the Panthers? Jesus Christ, Florida will absolutely BULLY either one into total submission.
I was so mad about that high stick on Hughes I can't even watch this video
Were you mad about the high stick on Hyman too?

Right in the hog for hoglander had me rolling 🤣🤣🤣
kelly sutherland should be reffing minor hockey for how poor of a job he did
Rick knows how to say more by saying less
6:59 beautiful shot of heads-up crossovers to create speed into the O-zone. The flying-V's got nothing on that.
mcjesus gets away with just about anything, but this was a blatant high stick out in the open, and the officials didn't see it??? bullsht..... the nhl wants mcjesus in the finals$$$$$$$$$$....
Ya cause Oilers draw such a huge audience in the US...😅 Oil fans are all convinced their series vs Vegas last yr was "rigged". The reality is its just impossible to ref an NHL game perfectly and everyone thinks their team gets screwed
The thing I didn't get about that non-call is, 2 refs + 2 linesman and any one of the 4 could call a penalty on high sticking. But, none of them did and none of them even huddled up to discuss it. Quinn's Hughes face was bleeding and they saw that. They got Suter's puck over the glass penalty, which was a penalty, but not the high stick by McDavid where the puck was closed by. 4 officials didn't see that? What upset me more was, they called a weak interference/holding penalty not long after that, but not the blatant penalties.
The NHL isn't competent enough to operate that kind of conspiracy without being discovered IMO.

The zebras lost all control of this game
Ian Cole is an Oiler disguised as a Canuck...
Prove me wrong... 🤨
Easy :) If we could do that we'd have sent you Jack Campbell.
Hyman's "highstick" was due to his OWN stick...
Thank you! I thought I was going crazy when I first watched it- I had to play it on 0.25x speed, utterly baffled why people keep saying it was a missed high sticking call when all three Canucks defenders near him clearly have their sticks on the ice the entire time (and even Silovs' stick is on the ice too, so it wasn't his). It was either Hyman's stick or his teammate's (though I believe you're right that it's his own); glad that one didn't get called as a penalty because it absolutely wasn't one (especially compared to what should have been a major against McDavid for Hughes)
Thats a straight up lie. Look at the damn highlight video again on sportnets slow it down if your brain cant handle it, its clearly Zadarovs stick missing a stick lift and hitting Hyman. Like honestly its not that hard to see. I'll make it easy for you, infront of the net, 3:00 in the video.
@@lAmCanad1an i found the missing stick 3:07
@@staffan144 How bout Zadarovs goal? It was too many men. Whyd that count?
@@lAmCanad1an no. It doesn't count
The league has to hold referees accountable. No way you can have that many missed calls unless they're intentionally trying to control the outcome of the game or they're simply not qualified to officiate at that level.
Yo that non call on holding at the end of the Florida game and then they turned around and called goalie interference in Boston because he got held by the Florida player was absolutely wild! Made me not want to watch hockey anymore
I love your breakdown and I love how you educate everyone on different defenses and offenses and strategies to defend both. Love the nicknames for everybody and teams alike. Especially your Toronto parade update which is officially canceled. Let’s go Edmonton come on guys let McDavid get his flowers.
How about Nurse in the first, boards a guy, then elbows him in the head when he gets up, and they call Nug on a shady trip a minute later. Im an oilers fan who was there, and i thought that was fucked up
Classic playoff reffing
The first hit was fine, that's not boarding. If you turn your head to the boards while being hit that's what happens. Debatably an elbow afterwards. Canucks also had too many many just before their 3rd goal
@@paulg6274this entirely false. Almost every boarding call in the first round was due to guys turning into the boards at the last second.
It wasnt boarding it was from his side, thats not a penalty by any rule book. Pettersson just got tossed because Nurse is bigger and stronger. Funny how if Myers does it to McDavid or Draisaitl its a good hit but that other way around and Canucks fans cry about anything being wrong.
@lAmCanad1an entirely fair, looked pretty bad from where I was sitting, but the point is the reffing was horrible, all around.
that missed high stick that could've gave the nucks a 4 min PP could've been the turning point
You could say that about any of the missed calls against the Oilers too lol. The officiating is just flat out bad.
So could have the missed high stick on Hyman by Zadorov which also drew blood
So could've the missed 5 on 3 for the Oilers that they didn't get.
@@Skynertianice try, that was Hyman’s own stick

that non call on mcdavid was absolutely ridiculous
that moment when 2 refs bet on opposite teams
There is a difference between an interference penalty and slashing someone in the face.
More like in the nuts. Even TNT guy said he didn't see a penalty on Hoglander there, but we all did see Oilers player hitting Hoglander in the neither region with his stick. How is that even allowed? A minor penalty and an offsetting one at that is an insult.
He was just checking if the hog had landed
I thought this game was a treat to watch, sure there were some missed calls but the skill between these two canadian teams is amazing
That third period looked like one continuous PP for the Oilers, who spent most of it in the O-zone
love the single game breakdowns
4:44 love how you cut to Craig Anderson when talking about the rvh 😂
great video again sir! in the east coast I try to watch the games but man... it gets too late to watch past the mid-2nd period. That's what led me to finding your channel to get the crazy great recap & insight you provide - congrats. I am not from here and hockey, playoff hockey in particular is amazing, the intensity, skill and speed is fun to watch. I learn a lot from your breakdowns and strategies, for sure it is a very difficult sport and these guys make is look so unfair easy. McJesus is incredible to watch and I would like them to go all the way - like any canadian team to advance EXCEPT the leafs lol... but to choose from all of them this year was Oilers. Thank you again and look forward to your other videos.
Greetings from the Peoples Socialist Province of Quebec :(
The Canuck’s need to mark that Ian Cole guy… they left him wide open for that tip 😂
Ha ha ha... you mean like Steve Smith scoring from behind his own net into his own goal?
Really great breakdown.
Kelly Sutherland shouldn't be allowed to ref Vancouver Canuck games.....being from the Lower Mainland, he overcompensates trying not to look like a Homer by making poor judgement calls on the Canucks, or misses obvious calls entirely! 4 officials on the ice, and not one seen the boarding hit on Petey behind the Oilers net, or the blatant high stick and constant slew-footing on Hughes....I find that hard to believe.
Yeah you can't have a ref who grew up or lived in an area associated with one of the teams playing. This also goes for cities of rivals. Say one of the refs in this game grew up in Calgary, they'd probably give more calls to the Canucks by virtue of hating the Oilers
this was one of the weirdest plays. It was as if Hughes did not see McDavid at all and tried to skate through him to check the play and the vice versa for McDavid skaing away from the puck. It was just strange to see the way they skated by each other and seemingly did not care for each other's presence.
Refs had no problem reviewing the high stick that drew blood in the Wpg/Col series... but just the time when it caused the Jets to take the penalty. When Vilardi got slashed in the face and leaked crimson, the refs forgot they could review it
Officiating is garbage and seeing as the NHL must be aware of the blown calls, the NHL is garbage for allowing it to happen
The missed calls didn’t decide this game, but that’s only because both teams got screwed so badly by missed calls.
Great job at breaking down offensive and defensive systems. The playoffs are truly a chess match and favors teams that can adapt on the fly.
Excellent analysis
Love your videos

As an Oilers fan the Vancouver v Edmonton games have been the worst reffed games I've seen in a long time. Really bad missed calls both ways.
@Hockey Psychology When is the recap video coming out that usually comes out on sunday?
Kelly Sutherland is an undercover Oilers player. Kelly played well for the Oilers.
“Right in the hog for Hoglander” classic. 😂
Although calls were missed on both sides a double minor with a player bleeding and a dirty slue foot definitely takes the cake. Not a ‘fan’ of either team but the Oilers got lucky with this one
This is already the best series of the second round. I’m a Nucklehead but I’m also kinda happy that this is officially a series with the road win. The GTG by McD was so good
Referees were just there for decoration

“Right in the hog for hoglander” 🤣🤣
Refs don’t want to call penalties because it’s too big an advantage for Oilers. No wonder they’ve decided to start their villain arc. If you’re not gonna call penalties may as well play dirty because why not?
It went off the Cici’s stick so It was a fluffy goal 😂😂😂
Are we all assuming that if they call this that Vancouver scores are the ensuing power play?
Bro wtf was Cole doing it looked like he literally intentionally scored that goal..
I mean if you where in the canucks arena, you wouldn’t be able to hear your self make and call penalties either 😂. That place was poppin
50% of oilers goals this series are all gifts from Ian Cole.

Will you be covering the world championship?
I really hope the next Toronto coach can det something up for the PP like what vancouver has, the treat of AM34s shot with option for willy infront or marner on the side.
Everybody on the bench saw McD highstick Hughes in the face there. That slew foot by Kane won't go unnoticed either
Kane is a clown, taking down a star player like that. Hoping Zadorov puts him through the boards tomorrow night for it.
Bettman clearly doesn't want a wcf without mcD...
Hitting hogs in the battery is brad Marchand level of dirty
Missed the high stick on Hughes, missed the high stick on Hyman, missed the too many men just before the Zadorov goal, among other ridiculously soft calls made instead of these pretty blatant missed calls, this officiating team was terrible, from both sides of the ice.
The thing that really pissed me off was in the Nashville series they literally reviewed a high stick to get the call right. So why not this one?
In the NHL, high sticking that results in drawing blood is considered a major penalty, which means the offending player is ejected from the game for five minutes, and the team must play short-handed for the duration of the penalty.
You are the only Hockey TH-camr I take seriously. You should be a video coach.
lots of stuff goes uncalled but the high stick is just inexcusable. Hughes was even forced back to the bench because he was still leaking when he tried to come out for a shift. A 4 min powerplay with mcdavid in the box would have completely shifted the momentum of the game.
0:19 this mf intentionally deflected the puck into our own net. kick this guy off our team NOW.
Was watching the game where I work as we had an official "watch party", I say official because I work for the Abbotsford Canucks, aka the AHL Canucks, so it was an official city sanctioned event. Was a fun time despite the fact that the Canucks lost. Gonna have another Watch Party event on Sunday, so that'll be fun.
The thing that pissed me off was the refs calling the most asinine pre season penalties like the Hyman on Zadorov one and then letting attempted murder go clean
Get your shit together stripes
Reminiscent of the Gretzky high stick on Gilmour.
Don't forget mcdavid got tripped immediately after scoring the third goal and no penalty was called. Blatant missed call. If you can get a minor for roughing after a whistle then a penalty for tripping after a goal can also be assessed. Oilers Should've had a powerplay after tieing the game .
Refs this year have been absolutely HORRIBLE.
That high stick might just be what costs Edmonton the season ,lets see how Vancouver responds to it.....
As the psychotic Barry Melrose said many years ago, the league should take the rule book and toss it in the trash. There are no rules like there is no spoon.
Matrix reference?
@@vegan678 lol yeah a bit😁
Look at it this way and savor this: A game two loss means that now they can bring the series win home in game 5!
The referees really need to be held accountable, just like the players. If a player messes up he gets fined. It REALLY should be the same for the referees.
You’re good at what you do here.
As a canuck fan I'm actually pretty happy with their play. They played a terrible 3rd period that doesn't really represent the way they usually play. Even with the crazy pressure the Oilers were applying the canucks are more than capable of clearing the zone better. I think they'll adjust well and not allow such a drastic loss of control in a period like that. Full marks to the Oilers for that 3rd period. They played amazingly well and aside from the mistake on McDavid, the Canucks absorbed the pressure very well. Still, it's not the way they are successful so that kind of passivity will cost them the series if they continue. That 3rd was literally the best hockey they Oilers have played against the canucks all year. I think the canucks will be more than capable of matching and adjusting to that. Looking forward to game 3.
I don't understand why the RVH technique has become so universal. It leaves a huge hole top shelf and it makes it harder to stop one time plays that start with passes from behind the net.
You either throw the whistle away or you call everything. There is not much room for middle ground.
3:10 Ouch!!
