The Alberta of America vs the Texas of Canada.
best comment by far
Yeah... but it's Edmonton, not Calgary. Hell, even Calgary is quite a different place from the Alberta stereotype.
Oh I see what you did there… 😉
Real
Albertan here 🤣🤣👍👏👏
Amazing to note that Dallas drafted Heiskanen, Robertson and Oettinger in the SAME draft year.
It opened the floodgates too. From 2017 until now they've hit on at least one player every year. Dellandrea (bottom 6 forward), Thomas Harley, Mavrik Bourque (going to be a problem next year), Wyatt Johnston (and Stankoven in the same draft), and Bichsel looks to be a hit on defense but we won't know until next year when he likely joins the Stars.
It's just been a clinic in drafting for the past 6-7 years.
dallas has a genius in the scouting room. always seems to have.
@@coolcolin09 christian kyrou
@@coolcolin09honestly dallas has the most impressive drafting in the league
Wyatt Johnston and Logan Stankoven in 2021 as well
The relaunch of the Oilers-Stars rivalry of the 90s
Oh no
There is no rivalry here, stars are going to fraud check the oilers
@@donaldvuong4188 one notable difference, Edmonton has McDavid and Draisaitl. The Stars don't have anyone close to Modano and Niewendyk.
Between 1997 and 2003, the Stars and Oilers met six times in the playoffs. The teams have not played a postseason series in the 20 years since. Dallas holds a 5-1 advantage all-time against Edmonton in the playoffs
i'd also like to add that the only reason Deadmonton won against Dallas in 97 is because Cujo stood on his head. Goalies steal series' and Dallas has a way better goalie in Otter. If Dallas loses against Deadmonton I will be the most disappointed I'll have been, ever, as a lifelong Stars fan (born in 91).
During the dark days of the Oilers a lot of fans liked to joke “I miss the days when the Oilers would lose to Dallas in the playoffs.”
Um I remember Dallas losing to Edmonton with Cujo in nets. And they lost in Dallas.
@@Kissology3after that series the Oilers barely even one a game, much less a series against the Stars.
That matchup was inescapable. After Cujo embarrassed them in 97, they held that grudge for 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2003. I don’t think there has ever been a time post-expansion where 2 teams have met 5 years in a row, and 6 times in 7 years.
@@Kissology3 Oilers are 2-6 all time against the stars in the playoffs. Congrats on remembering 1 series win and blocking out all the losses
@davidvaughn7239 cujo was the best ever playoff goalie to not win a cup. As soon as he priced himself off the Oilers, we stopped upsetting teams in the 1st round.
Dallas just needs to stay out of the box. That power play is automatic.
Agreed. We can shut down powerhouses, so long as we're not down a man.
Not really the D on Dallas is crazy good and are extremely aggressive
The kanucks proved that the oiler powerplay is far from automatic.
The PK for Edmonton is also deadly so lol
@@rdeh167869% PK is hardly crazy good
For me as a stars fan, really crazy to think we were an OT loss away against VGK from pretty much being eliminated and here we are in the WCF. How can you not love hockey?!
Get ready for a barn burner. I doubt either one of these teams is gonna leave anything on the ice.
Big reason why I think Wyatt is an early conn smythe favorite
It's amazing that these playoffs we may have witnessed the Stanley Cup series in the 1st round.
Yeah and all the blabbing about "mcdavid or mcdraistl being early favorites to win the Conn Smythe" blah blah blah
means nothing if they dont advance to the next round AND win the Cup
It just shows the broadcasters favoritism by even starting something that at this point is a non-conversation. No player has ever won the Conn Smythe without making it to the Stanley Cup Finals, and the award has only gone to a player on the losing team TWICE, in NHL history,. and both times it went to the losing goaltender.
So its a bit early to start talking Conn Smythe.
watching that 97 series as a kid was when i fully bought in as an oilers fan
As an Oilers fan, Dallas scares me the most. They have all four lines rolling, defence is amongst the best, and Ottenger has another level. I remember the Calgary series in 2022 even though they lost, Ott was crazy good.
Any team that get this far has chance to win the cup. Remember 2006?
Oilers have two Wizards though.....🧙♂️🧙♂️......Has to count for something.
@@user-bi6yf4hv9gdallas has to get past the Refs first.
@@user-bi6yf4hv9g wizards, hahaha. Whata shame.
Dallas will probably get Hakanpaa back as well, and he's a big boy.
Beautiful jersey Shannon. One of my all time favorites. Would like to see them back soon.
Yuck. Their rebrand was the best I’ve ever seen. Shannon’s duds there are better than that crap before the remake, but it’s still uninspired, generic.
Dallas over the Stars…oh good, I was confusing them with the Iowa Stars, or perhaps the Atascocita Stars. 🙄
This series will completely hinge on Edmonton's goaltending, which is the huge question mark. If they can get solid Goaltending they can stand toe to toe with Dallas and push it to 6 to 7 games, but Skinner is extremely unpredictable / volatile. And if the Oilers get subpar goaltending to start like they did against Vancouver then it's going to be a short series because Dallas is just a better team than Vancouver - Edmonton will not be able to get away with 2-3 games of sub-par goaltending this time around.
Edmonton's bottom 6 also has to step it up to match Dallas'.
Agreed on both counts!
As an Oilers fan…. As much as i want my team to win, this will be by far the toughest team we face. Wyatt and stanky are unreal, the oldies line of duchene march and seguin are playing well. Robo is actually playing this playoff and not a plug like he was last year. Their top 4 d are solid especially the addition of Tanev. Their weakness will be their bottom pairing
It was the Line of Duchene, Pavelski, and Marchment which scored the OT Game winner against Colorado - twice. Have to see if Hintz comes back to see how the lines shake out, but the Stars are in pretty good shape either way.
No Hintz is going to hurt the Stars immensely on the defensive side. Skinner also plays well against the Stars. This won't be the lopsided 5 game massacre people on Twitter are acting like. Let's go Stars, I hope the boys still have gas in the tank
Skinner is 2-2 in his career against Dallas with only 1 game his sv% was above .900
It will be. Skinner sucks
The weakness is in the Oilers goaltending. Dallas can not take stupid penalties. If they give the Oilers open ice, it is trouble. On the other hand, the Oilers have to win. I think their window to win a cup is closing, and the next few years will be closing rapidly.
Who said no Hintz? He's day-to-day and this series doesn't start until Thursday. If he's not there for game 1, which big chance he is, he'll be there for game 2.
@@Beezer1138 he'll be back at some point, but not at 1C capacity.I'm not sure how strong on the puck he'll be between the shot MacKinnon gave him and whatever lingering lower body thing has plagued him for months. Then again Mcdavid looks to be playing through Soucy and Zadorov's attempt to make his spine into a Cool S, so it balances out a little haha
Just want to add, I am very grateful to have found your channel. Very hard to find an unbiased analysis of these playoffs.
I’m going Dallas but if Dallas gets cocky and doesn’t take Edmonton seriously don’t be surprised by an upset
The Stars strategy of wandering in unprepared and losing game 1 to lure the opposition off guard has worked really well so far lol
@@TheFusionmixhaha ya i wonder if thats a record losing game 1 in each 3 rounds if they end up winning the series
Why would Dallas get cocky and not take oil seriously? I can’t imagine being cocky playing against mcdavid and draisaitl. Dallas is slightly better I think, but I think mcdavid wants it more than any player on the ice. Hope it goes 7.
@@strategic1710there's no way McDavid wants it more than Pavelski, Suter and Benn.
@@bigvanvader3122 Agreed. There's still loads of time for McD to win the cup somewhere else. :) Pavs needs to win it now or never.
I actually think this is going to be far more evenly matched than most would have you believe. The Oilers have become a stronger defensive team with the best P% since Knoblauch took over as head coach. Dallas has strong goaltending and more balanced scoring, but Edmonton will likely keep winning the special teams battle. And I also believe in the destiny of McDavid winning the Cup.
Oilers will steam roll Dallas in 5-6 max. Edmonton is going to the finals and beat the crap of those East teams. The Cup goes back to Canada my friend!
@Traumatree What are you basing that off? At least the original commenter had stats to backup his opinion
@@daved1535 The record for the Oilers under Knoblauch in the regular season was 46-18-5 with a P% of .703 and a goal differential of +73. The Stars were 52-21-9 with a P% of .689 and differential of +64. So far in this year's playoffs Edmonton has an 8-4-0 record. Dallas are 8-5-0, with one extra loss.
You might be wondering why I have excluded the first 13 games of the regular season for Edmonton. It is because the team was starting a new defensive system from scratch with coach Woodcroft and any result during this _time_ _of_ _learning_ is simply *unrepresentative* of their current capabilities. The Dallas stars did not undergo any such changes so their regular season remains an appropriate measure for expected success.
Believe it or not, when it comes down to the final results, the current Edmonton Oilers team actually does have the edge. A Better P%. Higher goal differential. And less playoff losses (and the same number of playoff wins of course).
I hope this helps. These are my logical conclusions based off of the facts.
@@daved1535 I have also been able to crudely calculate the projected GF and GA for Edmonton (once, again under Knoblauch) in an 82 game season to be 307 GF and 221 GA. Meaning a projected differential of +86. This series has the potential to surprise A LOT of hockey fans. (edit spelling)
I picked oilers and panthers in the Stanley cup final and I’m sticking with it.
I said Panthers, Stars 😂
Same. back in Jan.
I have panthers and oilers in my bracket too
I hope oilers make the final mcdavid deserves one for loyalty and all plsyoff failures

I sure hope we advance to the finals, I love my Oilers and everything they have done for me this school year especially during exam season where I just need something to look forward to to get me through. Dallas is tough and I am happy my team is still in it, but if we don't advance I will be happy we got into the final four.

The oilers calling the season a W after beating LA (which they always have) and THE CANUCKS 😂 (A non cup contending team that’s been crippled by injuries) Yall said cup or bust and struggled against a team like the Canucks that shouldn’t even be in the playoffs, stars are going to fraud check you bums

the oilers need to play a full 60 against dallas if they want to win, multiple times against the canucks they played 40, then coasted for the last 20, letting vancouver have a chance to comeback. cant do that against a team like dallas
Skinner better step it up. He's not going to face a low volume of shots like he did vs the Canucks.
I hope for the Star's sake they don't disregard the Oilers team defense like you are. Or it will be a short series. And not with the result you seem to think is inevitable.
Skinner is weird… he seems to play better with high volume of shots (35+). It’s like he has ADD or something… loses concentration when he’s not busy.

Dallas SHOULD win this in 5 if they stay out of the box, Skinner is not on Oettingers level. Being realistic, I think Dallas wins this in 6, only because I see McDavid and Draisaitl taking over a game or two. They have both been a pleasure to watch this post season and containing them is an impossible task.
Great preview. It's why I watch yours.
This is the first meeting in the conference final between these two franchises since 1991.
Nope 1997
It was a conference quarterfinal matchup in 1997.
The first matchup period since the 1st round in 2003
Correct - Northstars went onto to play Penguins, Pens won the cup. First of two in a row for them. Fun fact 😊
1991 was still the North Stars that is how long it has been and I am Minnesotan and love the North Stars, but follow Oilers due to relocation
As always, thanks for your coverage Hockey Guy your expertise is much appreciated. Go Oilers go!
All the respect in the world for how you’re handling the Oilers moving on great work as always
In the history of the playoffs, I've never wanted a team to win more than I want Dallas to win. These kids have got to pull it off.
They will
As an oilers fan through the 90s and stressed every time they played Dallas I will be probably nervous every game but it was awesome hockey back then and im hoping for the same here
Dallas, because their 3rd line is Benn-Seguin-Dadonov.
West gonna win the cup this year! Good luck Dallas
Go Avs Go
Bob Cole called Todd Marchant’s Game 7 OT winner in ‘97… goose bumps man, goose bumps.
So stoked to see this rivalry reignited. GO STARS!
Oilers in 7
I think Dallas takes the series but it won't be a sweep or probably not a 5 game series either.
But Dallas' depth, better goaltending, and frankly just coming off besting the last 2 Stanley Cup champs back to back, I think that gives rhe Stars the confidence boost they need to push through mentally.
This seems initially like it'll be similar to the Colorado series, who is arguably very similar to the Oilers. And Stars ended that series in 6 instead of 7.
Superstars are great, but to me depth > superstars.
6 or 7 game series no doubt
I don’t think it goes less than 6. Go Stars.
My concern with Oettinger is his numbers at home weren't close to his numbers on the road in the Colorado series. He only allowed 3 goals total in the 3 games in Colorado and allowed 12 goals in the 3 games in Dallas. Oettinger needs to be better on home ice in this upcoming series
Skinner is no Cujo, but I have faith. You got this STU!!
Cujo...what did Curtis Joseph ever win???

Home ice is not an advantage for the Stars. 5-1 when away, 3-4 at home and we damn near blew that 2nd home game against the AVs. We were the #1 Away team in the regular season and that trend carried over into the playoffs.

He does need a cup, and the team defense is shoring up to the point where they might only need ok goaltending. Lets hope they can keep the team in it.

Great rivalry to bring back! Let's be honest the jersey you have one is the best the stars have ever had and need to bring back!
I'm a diehard Edmonton fan but the sheer depth of the Stars makes this series feel insurmountable, mcdrai are great but they can't win a conference final on their own
Funny I'm also a diehard fan but I would argue that the team is more than just McDrai. Maybe not as much depth as some teams but there is depth . Still I agree this will not be easy
@@kevjapan it's definitely the deepest the Oilers have been in years, but Dallas essentially has two first lines and a 2nd and 3rd, is just so much more than us
@@kevjapan yea i dont think a fan would say that we are just mcdrai even if they were just a bandwagon joiner and watched 1 series.. That is odd
Such an odd take. We are not just McDrai. You don't seem like an Oilers fan.

6:56 1991, EDM - CGY, was the series that made me a hockey fan, and an EDM fan. I remember the whooping they took from MIN that year.
Minnesota took out Chicago and then St. Louis, 1st and 2nd overall in the league, through the first 2 rounds. Nobody I knew at least, was surprised the North Stars took out the Oilers that year.
They went to the cup on their PP. The magic ran out against Lemieux and Pittsburgh.
Special teams probably comes into play here and EDM probably has an edge there but DAL is deep. Expect this to be another long series.
Oilers both #1 in playoffs in PP n PK.%
Its gonna be interesting to watch Oilers 38% PP vs Stars 77% PK.

I've been to Northstar fan now Dallas fan since Cesar maniago was in goal 👌👍👍.
Uped their game? Dallas had a monumental payroll advantage during the late 90s early 2000s.
Stars fan here. I'm seeing Dallas skate with a confidence and will that I haven't seen since the late 90's We're seeing, in Dallas, a real emergence of young talent last year and this, with Hintz, Johnston, Robertson and Otter. I don't think this goes the distance. I'm taking the Stars in 6. Now, Puck Off!
Dallas is the best rush offense team and has the depth to run all four lines through all seven games that they need to, plus a goaltending advantage. Stars in 6
Dallas in 5. They'll face NY on the finals, and in overtime of game 7 Joe Pavelski will win it for the Stars.
Wouldn’t mind seeing Pavs get a cup at all.
As an Oiler fan would love to see the oilers lift the cup again, but honestly think the SCF is Dallas vs Rangers with Rangers lifting it.
Huge Dallas fan for this series
The Stars lackluster play at home is a concern but the road appears to be their saving grace.
I believe in Edmonton.
Every year Edmonton's character arc is that of the paperboy in Better of Dead.
This series will be really close and very fun to watch.
the late 90s have heavy scaring for me as an pre teens oilers fan
Here’s Zubov with a shot … he scores! And it’s a series sweep for the Dallas Stars! 🌟
So if EDM takes out your 1 and 2 teams, that means your cheering for them in the finals?
I'm taking Oilers in 7.
I'm an Oilers fan but I do think, on paper, Dallas has a stronger roster. Oilers have better top end talent but that's about all. Dallas has better full line depth, better defense, and a better goalie.
Dallas scares me.
I predict Dallas players will break out and light up skinner to the point he will need psychiatric help immediately!
Any of the four remaining are good enough to win it all. Put otter in Edmontons net and they are favourites. Most years the last two rounds are anti climatic, this Year could be very good.
Statwise the key factor for this series should be the special teams.
Stars pk is brutal in the playoffs.
But if they can keep their pm in check and up their level on the pk, they should be the clear favorite.
Having said that the Oilers 3rd and 4th line were given the team something in the last 2 games, if that trend continues we may have a more even series at hand.
The obvious factor goaltending - if skinner plays at his level so far, Oilers won't have a chance. I guess that's clear.
Hoping for a tight, actionpacked series and for Oilers in 6.
Stars pk is not brutal, they killed 85% of the Avs pp’s, they just need to stay out of the box though
of the remaining final Four..
i dont think there's a more complete team than the Stars.. 4 lines deep, and so much balance scoring throughout..
there back end of Lindell, Tanev esp..will be an absolute nightmare to play against..
as for their Goaltender Oettinger, well i feel he has another level, i dont think we've seen his best...
so... that said.. i'm sticking with my guns here/
, from beginning Dallas were my favorite then, and i'm not changing my mind. 💚🖤
Will we get a history of these teams rivalry?
Oilers 97 run.... oh man...... Insane run... MGM line with Todd Marchant!!!!!
"...is 69%. Stop giggling." You know us so well.
Despite the scoring available, it's really going to be down to which goalie is least terrible. Oettinger looks better but whose got the wins in them?
I would have mentioned the regular season record especially the 5-0 Dallas win.
I am a re-converted oiler. Used to be until the trade of the Great One
Idk Oilers fans, how confident are you going into the CF with your level of goaltending? .881% from 10 games, that's brutal.
Yeah, Oilers fan here. I am a little worried. I think the whole series is seriously going to come down to Edmonton's goaltending. Edmonton could have had Vancouver out much sooner than 7 games if Skinner hadn't let in so many bad goals.
It'd be really nice if Dallas could defend their home ice this round. 3-4 at home is usually a bad indicator.
everyone counting out edmonton is about to find out. the last two game vs vancouver says a lot about this team and the roll they're on. go oilers

@@terks43 yall act like Silovs wasn't playing out his mind when he stepped in. of course that's the excuse but would the series have been any different with Demko? I doubt it
Not counting Edmonton out, but they are for sure a weaker team than either Vegas or Colorado.
If Dallas stays out of the box, this could be over in 5. If not, could go a full 7

There is no comparison, the Stars playoff record vs Oilers was won with money before the salary cap!
Stars payroll was 80 million compared to Oilers 40 million, the Oil couldn’t buy players like Dallas did..it’s much different now!
Love the underestimating of the Oil.
if the stars play like they played Colorado with a little different strategies, I see stars in 5 but it’ll be really hard.
If the Oilers 3rd line can shut down the Stars 3rd line I like the chances, if Stu is above .900 SV% they have a very good shot.
Um, stars have 4 lines lol
Skinners sv% has only been above .900 once in his last 6 games
@@MrMgage13 Oilers are #1 in 5x5 goals for, have the top 4 scorer’s, Also Bouchard who leads all oilers in ice time for defence would be #5 in mins/game on Dallas so fatigue is gonna play a factor in my opinion. Heiskinen played 28 mins per game while playing 13 games while oilers played 12.
Should be go love the video. Go Oilers go
How about in Colorado scored all those goals against Winnipeg. And then they play Dallas and that changed. 👌
For Edmonton, this will be the toughest team they've had to face thus far. For Dallas, I think this might be one of the less tough matchups thus far. Still, anything can happen. As an Oilers fan, I'm doubtful lmao. It'll be good to see either team succeed here though. So here's hoping for a good long series of entertaining games.
Game plan for the Oil should be the usual; attack attack attack. Do all you can to hide that mediocre goaltending and wobbly defence. For Dallas; same ol same. They showed that they can manage an explosive offence team pretty handily with their work against the Avs, I think that'll probably be the winning strat against Edmonton as well.

Probably not a popular take, but I see a straight in the cards the Stars were dealt - 7, 6, 5, 4 (which means their only remaining loss on the way to the Cup is 1 of the next 5).
Dallas beat Colorado without Hintz for the last two games. That’s unbelievable honestly.
If we can steal 1 in Dallas then I think it may play out the same way it did against Vancouver, Oilers in 7!
