I've been using gilding flakes for several years. I fold a piece of waxed paper (or parchment paper) in half, open it up and then do the gilding. And I save every scrap of the flakes, no matter how small. It's easy to pick up the waxed paper and pour the bits back into the container. I also have a little box of used dryer sheets, and I use one to help get the bits that might escape the waxed paper and end up on my table. The problem is static. And, don't sneeze or cough when working with them! Nice card, by the way, thanks!
Thanks for the tips and for watching!
Also, if you use lotion/moisturizer, it will definitely add to the issue.😊
@Amy's Wares • Amy: Thanks for letting us know about the mess and the lingering flakes. Too often, TH-camrs just emphasize the results (yours are great) yet ignore the practical aspects. The practicalities are what determines whether we enjoy a technique and whether we will continue to use it.
Very true! I do have higher hopes for other brands so I will give it a try but for sure, it was a mess!
Great video. I love gilding flakes but as you've discovered they do go everywhere. The trick is to work over a large piece of paper or parchment to catch the excess. It is also essential to decant the flakes into a bigger container because they expand once you open the jar.
Ooh good tip on the larger jar! Thanks so much for watching
Beautiful card! I’ve had gilding flakes for over 20 years, and while they can be messy, those Spectrum Noir ones were crazy messy. My suggestion for next time is to use something underneath them ( like a lid to a box) and Swiffer cloths. It should also be easier with the Nuvo flakes.
You are so right. I tried the nuvo ones yesterday and it was a completely different experience. Thanks for the tips and for watching!
Pretty card, pretty nails!! This reminded me of why my guilding flakes are at the back of shelf somewhere! The results are very pretty, the mess… 😬!! I used old pieces of newsprint-like paper to work on, then threw it out, and still had bits flying about!! I think I’ll be sticking with foiling, which is easy to do this same way on adhesive!! Just call me chicken!!🤣
Hahahha I understand now why lol. Thanks for watching friend!!
I don't think I'm ever going to be brave enough to try gilding flakes 😅 You go girl!
Hahaha I gave it another go yesterday with nuvo flakes and it was a much different experience! Much better! Watch for a vid with that!
@@amyswares Ooh! Can't wait!! 😁
@@pinkmosquito22 thanks!!
I've used Cosmic Shimmer flakes, which tend to be larger and less messy. Try packing tape to pick up the debris.
oooh smart idea with the packing tape! Yes, I do think how tiny the flakes were really made a difference!!
A sticky lint roller would be useful too
Thanks for the honest view of the mess!! I had no idea they were THAT bad!!😅😅
Nicole Spohr applies her gilding flakes inside a plastic shoe box...I now know why! Great card!!❤
Hahha yeah it was a mess. To be fair though I think it might be the brand or at the very least the containers that I have with such small pieces. I went down tonight and played with the nuvo brand and took some other precautions with regard to the mess and it was a totally different experience. The pieces of the nuvo flakes were HUGE by comparison so it made it much neater! Thanks for watching!
Amy, GORGEOUS! Love guilding flakes - I only have the gold, but love the trio of pinks. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for checking it out!!!
Beautiful and understated. I started using my gilding flakes on a Teflon mat instead of my glass mat. I'm not sure the flakes are ever coming off my glass mat. They're probably not coming off the Teflon mat either but that's fine with me. At least they don't contaminate anything so that's a plus. I do love them though. I like to make an entire background and die cut them. It's especially effective for fall leaves (in the right colors).
Oooh good ideas! I bet that is gorgeous for fall cards! Thanks so much for watching! I think I might try in a box top or a shallow box next time!!
I’m usually up for a mess, but the flakes are a bit much for me. ❤ Beautiful card, though!
My fingers are crossed for the other brands lol! Thanks for watching friend!
That is beautiful! That's a really cool thing to do with the gilding flakes. I've never seen that done before. I love how pretty that stuff is, but I can't stand how staticky it is.
Definitely a learning curve and not all of them are created equal as I'm finding out. My follow up with the nuvo went 💯 better! Thanks for watching!
Beautiful card- Amy! I love using gliding flakes. The bigger the flakes are easier to use than smaller flakes.
Yeah I can imagine so, I'm definitely going to have better luck I think with the nuvo ones! Thanks for watching!
100% those flakes Amy!!! I was so upset when I tried them. They literally were awful. And I feel for anyone who uses them as a first timer because it would put you off for life!!! I absolutely love my IndigoBlu flakes and have never had these issues with those. Beautiful card though and well done with the clean up! I did laugh when you got the hoover out but it was a laugh of empathy!!! I still have some of those bits stuck to my own desk 😅😩
BHAAHAH so good to know. I'm hoping the nuvo will be more like the IndigoBlu brand which I also want to try! Thanks for watching!
Can you buy the indigo blu in US?
@@lindapawlowski7720 I'm not sure! Worth looking into!
@@lindapawlowski7720 I believe they ship worldwide but I don't think they have a US stockist at the moment. I'll try and find out for you.
Thanks Laura!!
Yep, I share your, "OMG what a mess" feeling. And, I only have the Nuvo Gilding Flakes. (just to warn ya 😬) BUT..... A Swiffer cloth (the dry ones for floors and stuff) will be your friend. Or even the Swiffer Duster.
Your card is just Gorgeous ❣️👌 I love it!
And thank you for sharing this card, amd how you made it. I learned (again) something from it. I really had no idea, that it is possible to use tspe on your card and run it through an embossing folder. So yeah... Thank you!!
Thanks for the tips my friend!! I'm so glad you like the card. Have a great day!
I have some gilding flakes I haven't used yet. Thanks for the warning about how messy they are. You would never know it though, your card turned out beautifully!
Thanks friend!! The nuvo ones were much better!!
Beautiful card but those flakes do look messy! Thanks for sharing.
They sure were but I have higher hopes for the nuvo brand! Fingers crossed!!
I had the exact same experience with those flakes. I tried to get the last few bits off of my hands and ended up with a glittered sink-I wiped it out with a paper towel but I think my cleaning lady is still swearing about getting her rags full of glitter. I had much better luck using Cosmic Shimmer flakes. Your card is gorgeous. I love the effect of embossing the flakes. I might have to give gilding flakes another try-this time in a box lined with swiffer cloths. TFS
Ugh what a mess. I'm sorry that was your experience too. On the day that I aired this, I tried again with my nuvo flakes and it was SO MUCH BETTER!! Watch for an upcoming vid of round two. Thanks for watching!
Beautiful Amy!! You can use a box and place the card inside and then it will keep all the little leftovers inside. I like using them but it can be messes !!!
Yes! I'm definitely going to try that next time for sure! And I need to try other brands like Nuvo and Indigoblu!
Amy, the card came out great! Good for you for persevering!😊🐾❤️🌵
Hahahah thanks, it was touch and go for a minute there LOLOL
Love the jump into new techniques. Didn't know about those products, and boy do I love the colors.
Thanks so much!! I appreciate you watching!
Beautiful card!! I've used gilding flakes a few times. They're absolutely beautiful, but I still have them embedded in my wood dining room table from a few years ago.
It's crazy right? Geesh
@@amyswares it is crazy! And they "grow" when you take them out of the their container. All the brands I've tried are the same.
@@conniefossi1327 eek!!
I can’t wait to try this card idea!
Thanks so much!!
A long time ago I decided that this technique was not for me. I love the shine though, and your card turned out beautifully!
Thanks so much for watching and for the kind note.
Another beautiful card Amy!! Love it and the colors you used. I only have some gold gilding flakes and have only used them a couple of times because I found them EVERYWHERE!!!😮
It's shocking how messy it is!
Beautiful card but I'll definitely try a non-flakes option. I don't mind inky fingers, but not glitter! 😎
right??? I think it will be better with other brands but I have to try yet! Thanks for watching!
Put the large flakes in a larger plastic container as the big pieces layer and stick together. Also good for the multiple color flakes. I've also seen the recommendation to do it in a large plastic container to help keep things contained. Still a mess but not so bad.
Great ideas! Thanks
Beautiful card. I use bigger flakes too. And I will use a piece of copy paper under my project, as it captures the over flow and less static than the glass surface.
Great tips! Thank you!
Love that card.
Thanks so much!
Wow, that's amazing! Could you possibly use a big plastic tub to do it in and keep everything contained? But I don't mind the glitter. I'm a more is more kinda girl. 😊
Yeah I was thinking next time of working in a shallow box or box lid or something to help contain it. I also have higher hopes for the nuvo brand too. Thanks so much for watching!!
All gliding flakes are messy. Getting out a minimum is the best idea. The double stick tape is a great idea.
Thanks so much! I did try the nuvo flakes and it was a much better experience.
Your card is beautiful and the gilding flakes are pretty and shiny but I couldn't handle the mess :-) I have some other gilding flakes I've had for years and they are a bit less messy but also less glittery, and I haven't used them in years.
Yea I definitely need to build up the nerve and try the nuvo ones. Maybe I will try it in a shallow box or something lol. Thanks for watching!
What an amazing card and idea. You might want to try Swiffer dust cloths.
Thank you, I will have to try those! Thanks for watching!
Beautiful card! I have good leaving fllakes. Barely used as the mess was a lot. I may try again with your card idea and the tips I read in the comments. Thanks!
Yea definitely give it another go. I tried again yesterday with the nuvo flakes and some of the tips and it was way better! Watch for a follow up vid!
Card turned out lovely. Love an inky mess but not a glittery one! Lol! Im waay too static-y! ☺
Hahaha yea a very different animal for sure! Thanks for watching!
Gorgeous! Love this idea!
Thank you
Love the result, but not the mess!
Right?
AWESOME!! 💜💜💜
Thanks! 😄
Time to get out my flakes! Sooooo pretty. 😊
It really is so pretty
The flakes I mean lol
@@amyswares Both!!
Dont have your window open or your overhead fan on! 😮
@@ebriggs3498 😬 yikes
If it wasn’t for the mess this would be good for multiples😜
So true! Though I do still have high hopes for the nuvo flakes, I have to believe those won't be as messy! I need to circle back and give those a try!
thank you soooo much for posting this, you saved me a lot of money! I have those spectrum noir flakes in a cart, but seeing how small they are, it's 100% not for me, regular size is tricky enough!😂 hope nuvo will add colours to theirs😊
Thanks so much for watching!
I have guilding flakes but not used them yet so glad to watch ur video 😂 hope ur doing well
Thanks sweet friend!! Hope you are well too!
@@amyswares holding in there. Found out I'm going to be a gran in july
@@flickster69 oh my gosh!! That's amazing!! Congrats friend
@@amyswares thanks so much Amy....stil chill out watching ur videos lol
Well that turned out so pretty. You're right. It looks like it's pretty messy. But the results are beautiful.
Thanks so much!!
I love the card, how beautiful Amy!!!!
Don't forget the Swiffer cloths! :)
Thank you so much!
thank you!!
gorgeous card…when i use the flakes i do it in a box that way the mess is “mostly” contained
That makes perfect sense!! Thanks so much for watching!
Hi thanks for sharing love the pink tones . Happy Crafting x
Thanks so much for watching!
Very nice. Try it on parchment paper.
Thanks!!
I love this!
Thank you for watching!
I have used a diffrent brand, and they have bigger flakes, and I don't feel the ressidue is an issue. I hoover them up and use a baby wipe for the rest. Also I use a wash up sponge instead of a brush to burnish it.
Yes the big flakes really would make a difference! Thanks so much for the tips and for watching!
What's a 'wash up' sponge? Is it the same as a kitchen sponge?
@@lindaslack-c1q yes, kitchen sponge
@@lindaslack-c1q Yes, I guess it got lost in translation 😆I mean one of those with a coarse, green side and another color on the other side. I use the finer side.
That cane it really pretty bit those flakes are TEENY!
Yea it was crazy! Maybe I had a bad batch? Thanks for watching friend!
So Amy, I watched a video just this morning on gilding flakes by indigoblu. They used a colorful life, designs stencil called flower explosion, and they used a mixed copper, silver, and gold. It turned out stunningly, beautiful. I went searching for this product and only could find it overseas, so the cost to mail it to the US would be outrageous.. If you do find anything in the US, please let us know. I really would like to be able to purchase their product here.
Yes, Laura (Meercat) is guest designing for us. I definitely need to try the nuvo and I love the indigoblu colors for sure!! She makes such beautiful cards with it.
❤❤❤
Thanks for watching Peters :)
Messy, but pretty!
Indeed! Thanks so much for watching!!
I am sorry to hear these are so messy because I am OCD and just bought a bunch of gilding flakes to try them! Yikes!
I think it depends on the brand honestly. I went down today and decided to try the Nuvo ones that I got and it was a totally different experience because the flakes were much bigger! I have seen a lot of tips in here with ideas to combat the mess as well. Thanks for watching!
