    you were making hydrangea trees when you planted the hydrangea branches in the soil.

  • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse

    There is no need to change the potting mix, it is merely a medium to hold the plant and distribute the water and nutrients. Give it a good organic liquid feed consistently when watering. The only reason to change the potting soil is if it becomes so compacted or root bound that it no longer holds moisture. I learned this from a soil scientist. It is usually peat moss in potting soils that compresses and becomes a brick that causes the problems.

      Thanks for the tips! I might just do that, although, the main reason to move it here is because I would eventually like the plant to be centered in the pot and not on the side.

    Love how this happens sometimes. Had azalea branches root in the ground and realized that if you cover low lying branches with good soil, you can easily get azaleas to root in the ground and dig that portion up in a few years. Probably works for other plants too.

    When I pruned my fig tree this year, I put some of the cuttings that I would have normally discarded in water, and my neighbor put some directly in the ground. Already we both have roots on the cuttings. So I think we are finding that no matter what, plants - like fig trees and hydrangeas - want to grow! Thank you for being such a good teacher.

    I did a lot of hydrangea props last year. I put three in the ground in November. They were very small. Then I read somewhere you should wait a year before putting props in the ground. I thought I’d killed them for sure but they came back. I had a few others, including five I took from a 50 year old hydrangea that we’re having to cut down. They wilted and I thought they had died. I just left all of my ‘failures’ out on the porch over winter. I didn’t water them or anything. I went to clean the pots up this spring and they all had buds. I’m so thrilled. Apparently hydrangeas are like irises almost impossible to kill.

      The color would be really pale yellowish and not good! I agree, cutting the branches seems weird but the new growth will be as long as those branches, and those skinny parts of those branches would not be able to hold all the weight.

    • @SoilandMargaritas
      @SoilandMargaritas  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I did it the following year, I kept on cutting the "buds" and new growth the first year because they were supposed to be a trellis... BUT, if I was propagating them, I would start right away, just leave the new growth on top and go from there.
