As a long-time X-Men fan and fan of the original series, even though I wasn't born when the show was around, HOLY S*** , THIS SERIES IS EXCEPTIONAL (pun intended). No joke, this series is so masterfully well written, with absolutely phenomenal animation and truly compelling characters and complex, deep, dark themes that genuinely make you question the inherent societal bigotry and how to process internal thoughts of fighting for equality and how to do so in a way to help society grow from the status quo of discrimination and to do more than allow yourself to become numb to a neverending struggle that you feel like isn't your responsibility. Truthfully, this series is some of the *BEST MARVEL MEDIA WE'VE EVER SEEN SINCE ENDGAME* (except No Way Home, GOTG3 and Loki)! Compared to how phenomenal this series was, Fox X-Men movies (except Logan) seem like amateur student films with such a bare-bones understanding of how truly incredible and insane the X-Men stories can be when you truly hire people who care about these amazing characters.

I agree with Ryan. What is going to be the decisive issue between heroes and mutants is the heroes are high-achieving and special individuals. A mutant could be that grocery bagger that you gave a hard time to bolster your own ego, and the bagger could immediately hold you to task in a painful way.

@screencrush don’t forget we also got the DOJ locking up mutants or villainy characters like “abomination” they could use that as a part of the controversy or wedge between ppl like a cap/daredevil/doctor strange vs the likens of punisher/phoenix/venom
Not sure why there's so much hate for Filler episodes....those are the character development episodes. They allow the story to take a breath, slow down, and explore a character.
THANKS for this, ScreenCrush Gang!!!!! Ryan, I enjoyed your interpretive history of the X-Men films! Yes, it's true that the pre-MCU era was the pre-MCU era (you're right but I'm rolling my eyes anyway) :)
I think the idea of the replacement theory within the X-Men universe helps distinguish why regular humans are prejudice against the mutants. Resentment forms when you feel being left behind and that the world is no longer yours
The fact that Kang didn't absolutely dust ant man is a massive testament to the incompetence of the folks in charge of the multivariate saga. And multiverse of madness was so hyped, only to fizzle out and fall short of greatness. Hopefully the future is brighter
I was a tad bit surprised they weren’t going to try and split the phoenix force like they did in the comics for a bit between Cyclops, Namor, White Queen, Colossus ….forgetting the fifth!
Jubilee "becoming a woman" on her 18th birthday was what the Mojo episode was really about. Check the fade-out ending. She's an adult now, which changes how the character can be written and how other characters treat her.
I get why Ryan might be upset about the writers using Phoenix in the last episode. But the were hint that the phoenix was coming. They show in the opening credits just like Apocalypse was seen in the opening credits.
They've been kind of insisting that the big bosses are gonna change that eventually, or that it was always gonna be like that and Marvel's just not telling us, I don't know. I honestly hope that's not the case.
Part of what makes 97 work imo is that it feels like an established world whose characters have history. I didn't like any of the early 2000s or first MCU movies because they didn't. Most comic readers dont jump in at issue #1 with the origin story. We come in to established worlds with messy character relationships and confusing lore and love it.
Xmen 97 had good writing that cared about the characters and source material. That’s been missing from most of phase 4 and 5. I’m pretty checked out of mcu but we’ll told xmen stories could bring me back
I think adding the X-Men will be the icing on the cake because now I'm wondering how long they been around and how do they connect to the other super heroes of the MCU I can't wait to see how they connect everything together I think they will be a greatly needed boost to the MCU can't wait til secret wars
In X-Men '97, When Magneto says to Leach, "Haben keine angst" that doesn't translate to, "Don't be afraid" as the subtitles say. It means, "Don't be angry." I can't believe no one during production knew little enough German to catch that.
25:07 I think there is an important distinction that needs to be recognised here. Mutants ≠ Superheroes. Acceptance of Superheroes is conditional on them BEING SUPERHEROES. Otherwise, people will definitely be prejudiced.
Unfortunately for the original films as well there was no way in 2000 that a studio would allow Jubilee or Storm have more prominent roles. Plus good team up/ensemble movies were rare...
I think this is one of the biggest reasons why Deadpool & Wolverine will be such an important film for the MCU. Not only because they need something to get them back on top and earning fan interest back, but because it'll be the first bridge of "normies" and traditional comic film fans to go see a film and relive nostalgia while also creating new nostalgia. It'll be giving the "normies" a reason to care on the MCU's definitive take on the X-Men after seeing the farewell to the FOX era, but also to create curiosity on how the MCU is going to weave the X-Men and Fantastic Four into the MCU seamlessly after the Secret Wars presumed soft reboot.
I agree the XMen should probably be introduced how Wolverine is being introduced. Hell even Beast n Co introduced in The Marvels post-credit. Then you can have them feature after Secret Wars in The Mutant Saga. Mostly I believe this because Marvel has already decided to bring in F4. It’s easy to do with multiple seasons of animated XMen. The foundations are there, the histories, all of it. Just have them in a different reality. Imagine how epic it will be introducing their powers and displaying them for the first time in movies like Secret Wars. It should happen that way. Multiverse Saga needs to bring back Strange, Loki, etc and tie that all back together with the Fantastic Four before it adds and entire other team of heroes.
2:30 that´s how half of the MCU feels, and more nowadays because they got to the top with Endgame and they felt so invincible to the point that they could make whatever they want and it was going to give them a lot of money even if it was trash like Thor Ragnarok, Antman and Wasp, Captain Marvel, Black Widow, Love and Thunder or Quantumania.
Going to check it out. I have to say, I’m not excited about low frame rate animations and the lack of physical/facial nuance that live actors can bring. I do agree that it’s better to keep studios out of decision-making regarding scripts and stories. It is likely going to be possible for AI to produce animation for films in the future.
Never skip X-Men theme song! Mad Men has a really good theme song. Friday Night Lights’ theme song is so good. The Walking Dead too. And The Americans. Ok, I’m done. Anyway, the Newton Brothers did an amazing job with the music in the series. I can’t wait for more!

2:24 Excuse me, no. Halle Berry had won her oscar by X2, and used the oscar to add more screentime for her character in that movie (which was badly needed). Cyclops left X3 for Superman Returns, b/c he thought X3 was going to be bad.
1st. It makes me laugh, even though I get your point, that the MCU (Marvel) must learn from this other MCU (Marvel) story. 2nd, what you said about using the nostalgia seems to be exactly what they were going to do. They did it in What If ...?, they did it in WanndaVision, and as you know, the whole point of Time Runs Out/Secret Wars is that everything gets destroyed. We WILL see the X-Men we love AND see them and their world DIE. They absolutely will see the nostalgia to elll a great story and rip everyone to shreds (I think). THEN introduce characters that wouldn't fit otherwise. Great video again.
Marvels should lead to X-Men, right? I am not just talking about the after credits thing, but I understand Carol is important to the story of Rogue, which hasn't been in the movies. We also got Kamala being lampshaded as a mutant. The three Marvels feel like an arrow pointing towards Mutants. And then there could be Marvel Girl.
I still like the MCU and found a lot of the recent stuff very good. But I get peoples issues with it. I hope they stick the XMen in the MCU as a “too much” for people. Like people in that universe are okay with superheroes but it’s beginning to show the cracks with how badly the Sokovia Accords and the Thanos thing was fumbled by the superheroes and governments. The governments naturally blame the superheroes and then randomly just regular people start growing wings, showing weird powers, etc. and that’s when the public goes “nope. Too much.” I don’t know how they’d be able to reconcile the old mutants just sort of being around except that maybe the mutants just stayed underground as long as they could until the mutations became far too obvious. Regardless it’ll be interesting to see how they do it.
Not an A-, a solid A! I agree with almost all things said in this video and well said, by everyone :) This series was phenomenal and I was hooked, simply the best media we've received from Marvel in a long while! The point that Colton made about The Avengers vs the X-Men was eye-opening, great perspective! The Disney nostalgia loop, the studios manipulating events, all very interesting topics, thanks for bringing all those into perspective! 👏🏻💯
I have come across some sites that cry foul that the Black Panther cameo is revealed to be T'Chaka and not T'Challa. A continuity error in regards to Black Panther's appearance in the Fantastic Four series, it has incited claims of T'Challa / Chadwick Boseman being erased from MCU.
Let be honest the early 2000s there was a massive shift with special effects rather than stories if you look at Transformers and other Michael Bay movies. The cartoon even though very simple had good stories done well and easy to watch for people to enjoy. This series has taken it to a next level where making a good story is key. Who would of ever think of that. Let hope they keep the same formula than just nostalgia bait.
New X-Men will be "earth-xxx" but still exist in the MCU) Universe meaning all marvel properties under one roof, but this new earth will already have avengers and the greater Marvel umbrella co-existing together. We will see familiar variants of all fan favorite legacy MCU peppered in as we go as supporting roles and cameos.

Resentment forms when you feel being left behind and that the world is no longer yours
i love x-men 97 its amazing
The fact that Kang didn't absolutely dust ant man is a massive testament to the incompetence of the folks in charge of the multivariate saga. And multiverse of madness was so hyped, only to fizzle out and fall short of greatness. Hopefully the future is brighter
I was a tad bit surprised they weren’t going to try and split the phoenix force like they did in the comics for a bit between Cyclops, Namor, White Queen, Colossus ….forgetting the fifth!
Whoa! Vintage electronics alert! Is that a landline phone in her background?!
First Class and Days of Future Past are both awesome.
“My wife and I were watching ‘97 and THEY went to skip the intro”….
Really?
We were in the old Playboy Enterprise offices-Beverly Hills during the development of the first Iron Man movie. Not a car lot
Jubilee "becoming a woman" on her 18th birthday was what the Mojo episode was really about. Check the fade-out ending.
She's an adult now, which changes how the character can be written and how other characters treat her.
It's just been such a great series since the beginning.
2nd best theme ever. A-team #1
I get why Ryan might be upset about the writers using Phoenix in the last episode. But the were hint that the phoenix was coming. They show in the opening credits just like Apocalypse was seen in the opening credits.
Guys guys guys… how many times does it have to be confirmed that this universe is parallel to the MCU multiverse. It ain’t narratively connected.
It's just clickbait. I've seen multiple video today the last few days do this without even mentioning Kang or the multiverse.
They've been kind of insisting that the big bosses are gonna change that eventually, or that it was always gonna be like that and Marvel's just not telling us, I don't know. I honestly hope that's not the case.
I cried so much ... just from joy.. it was amazing
Man i love X Men i still think they are the best marvel hero and villians hope they keep making more we needed some more x men
Part of what makes 97 work imo is that it feels like an established world whose characters have history.
What the hell! Days of Future Past was one of the best. I did honestly know when leaving the theater that they would never make a better X-Men movie.
Theme songs still exist! Game of Thrones and Peacemaker, to name a couple, are totally unskippable.
Peak of entire mcu
You have to create new nostalgia… is a bar !!!
Hey, the Loki and Moon Knight shows were really good.. come on Ryan
I used to like when these videos where breakdowns of episodes with Ryan and Doug that’s it, not just discussions
@ScreenCrush PLEASE do something about all the interrupting ads in your videos. I had FIVE different unwanted ads interrupt your conversation, sometimes in mid-sentence. This is highly. aggravating and makes me want to avoid watching/listening to your videos in the background when I am doing chores and have my hands busy, because I have to stop what I am doing, step over to my phone, skip the add, and rewind JUST to continue listening in a fluid way. Not my favorite way to get my Screen Crush on! Keep up the great work, I love your content, but please fix the mid-video ads my dude.
1:09 punisher, Captain America, and blade best we gotnin the 2 decades before all worth the re watch....
Ryan, dooooo it!
7:14 so poetic (159years [3.5 short generations] past emancipation, 79 years[1.5 generations] post ww2[both were holocosts impactingnthe other] is what it is) POETIC AF in proper classic Xmen/marvel tradition. From what it meant to all the old head sci-fi nerd in the 90 that I was fortunate to be around, and some of my favorite educators- 90s ma finally be back in the bestvway possible, spiritually. Our pop culture experience from the 60s-90s was what bad some of our experience soo amazing compared to the present, fir a litany of sociogical reasons, 2024 is the best year of American culture pop culture and entertainment this entire millenia (hopefully the middle wins in the fall instead of either extreme, after 4 more years of bipartisian bs, we my finally se sanity prevail over either extreme, not a topic for this show, and yet always is) sit back and relax nerds, it all gets better. Growing pains baby.
Good thing Colton’s earphones cut out when you called him the guy stuck in your television who doesn’t know so please don’t tell him.
This was a return to form great video
Too much.”
I don’t know how they’d be able to reconcile the old mutants just sort of being around except that maybe the mutants just stayed underground as long as they could until the mutations became far too obvious.
The new standard
New X-Men will be "earth-xxx" but still exist in the MCU) Universe meaning all marvel properties under one roof, but this new earth will already have avengers and the greater Marvel umbrella co-existing together. We will see familiar variants of all fan favorite legacy MCU peppered in as we go as supporting roles and cameos.
My only complaint is that Representative Cooper didn’t come out as Mystique
But SHE WILL
X-men 97 kicked MCUs phase 4’s butt!
