    This is very helpful! I am an architecture student currently assigned to design a church, I have always been fascinated by gothic architecture, so I really wanted to incorporate gothic elements in my church. Luckily, I came across this video, which even comes with beautiful and accurate sketches! , and it helped me a lot in conceptualizing my design. I hope you create more content, a talent, and skill like yours would help a lot of architecture students!

      Many thanks! I hope to have more time for creating new videos in the future. By the way, designing a church was my favorite assignment during my studies :)

    I am actually building a Gothic Bookcase right now! Quarter sawn white oak, Gothic arches, and even Tracery! What a great video!

      Sounds like an awesome project! How long is it going to take you to build such a bookcase?

    • @Whitefirekith

      @@GrimDream I imagine it will take just under a month to complete. I've been a woodworker all my life and nearly 20 years ago became a Master Woodcarver. This Bookcase will be the first project in turning one of my empty rooms into a Gothic design office. :D

    I love how clearly illustrated everything is. I haven't heard the term "wimperg" before, just gable or main gable.

    • @GrimDream
      @GrimDream  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! Ah yes, there's a little difference between wimpergs and gables, as the former are purely decorative elements and can be added even to rectangular walls (above windows or doors for example).

    This is amazing. I had never understood this before. It's all confusing if you try to read what these things are. I have never been to any Cathedral(I doubt there are any in Northern India, at least not any famous ones) so it used to be tirelessly confusing to imagine what written descriptions were trying to picture.
    Thank you.

    This was the most entertaining video I have watched in a while! I can't promise that I will remember all of these terms tomorrow, but I am sure I'll remember a few! I was wondering, do you have a perspective drawing tutorial somewhere/are you planning to make one? I would be eternally grateful 😇

      Thanks! I'm super happy to read that! 😀
      I haven't made a perspective drawing tutorial, but I explained perspective basics in my Skillshare courses:

    Pinnacles are NOT DECORATIVE elements.
    They were made as heavy as possible (sometimes with lead) because their weight helps to contain the forces.
    In gothic architecture everything is about handling the horizontal forces of the main aches with the minimal amount of material.
    - Pointed arches instead of round => smaller horziontal loads
    - Extra vertical load of the pinnacles => direction of the load is more vertical => smaller buttreses

    I never understood the necessity to put a name in each element of architecture, so which names ought to put in a Sagrada Familia cathedral in Barcelona??

    • @vitriolopinxit
      @vitriolopinxit 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      All elements in la Sagrada Familia, from structural to ornamental ones, are simply traditional (gothic, to be precise) elements adapted to a catenary arch based structural work and Gaudi's take on Catalonian art nouveau taste for decoration. If you strip decoration and focus on structure, what you end up with is a gothic temple with no pointed arches. Some other technical innovations are purely based in removing or slightly shifting typical elements, such as for example exposing the start of the arches to make the pilars resemble trees by removing part of the filling of the vaults.
      Names come in handy for any field of knowledge and craftmanship: if you can name a thing, it means it has a purpouse, it's meant to be there.
