Believe it or not, some people have absolutely no mechanical aptitude or tools. Fixed income and a couple things wrong with it meant they’d either have to pay someone to repair or purchase a new replacement. With some shops charging over $100/hour and no guarantee they’d get it right they probably chose the lesser of two weevils.

Something I’ve been using for several years on control cables is motorcycle cable lubricant kits. They include a tool that clamps on the cable end and a spray can of a dry film lubricant that won’t attract dirt but leaves a slick film of lube. I'm facing that situation now. I bought a used JD lawn tractor last year, and this year it has cost me several hundred to keep going. The only reason I am keeping it is that I live in the snow belt and need the snow blower attachment. Come spring there is a very good chance this will end up in the trash pile. To answer your question however, aftermarket parts don't have the best reputation, and OEM honda is very expensive. Most mowers these days are used 3-6 years and discarded.

Interesting as that mower is exactly the same as mine only with the Craftsman logo. Mine is finally exhibiting an issue that I will have to deal with this year yet, has the sound of the mower bogging down in taller grass; sounds almost like a food processor processing dough. The self propelled works fine but it almost seems like the belt is the issue? I will have to remove the cover and check it being a 2013 model. Maybe this rings a bell with the sound feature. Wasn't sure if I was going to make it through the back yard today with the noise but being I was replacing my deck complete I did not have time to deal with it today. 600 square foot deck and about 3/4 through replacement of the topping, the rest is sound. If a person isnt familiar with lawn mower repair taking it to a shop is much more than 13 dollars. My mower wouldn't stop I took it to the local shop that charged me 98 dollars.......85 diagnostic plus parts to rebuild the carb. Personally I took it on the chin, went home, mowed my yard and spent 2 hours on TH-cam learning how to do it myself. Since then I cleaned the carb with no parts twice for free and gotten multiple mowers started for others. I now use a Makita electric mower......but I saved myself and some freinds in my opinion close to a thousand bucks with some simple tweaks of a seemingly its broke throw it away mower.

I have a couple thoughts and questions. Why do you think the one wheel was completely bald? The others look like they are in good shape. Wheels are not usually inexpensive so I can understand why they would not replace it especially if they didn’t go for a 13.00 recoil. Secondly, the self propel system not returning might be a cause for someone to put a mower on the curb. This happens mostly because people tend to think they are more complicated than they are. Lack of knowledge and patience are sure fire ways that equipment gets kicked to the curb. Literally.

    • @INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE
