Step #1 - remove all strings, robot tuner screws, & nuts from top of fret board. Step #2, carefully slide tuners out of their respective bores. Step #3 - discard robot tuners. Step #4 - install new Grover, Kluson, or (insert tuners of your choice here _____) screws & nut installation is essentially the reverse of removal with possible drilling new holes for aforementioned new tuners...(I just returned the guitar to the store & bought something else)
There’s a mode where you can just strum the guitar and it tunes every string all at once, also for intonation there’s a mode where it tells you how many half turns on the screws and which way to move the saddles

Oh for crying out loud these tuners are just awesome people! Stop being so stuck in the past. I am 60 so age has nothing to do with it these are easy to operate! I have 10 guitars currently. 5 of them have these installed and I just love em. Changing strings is fast and easy unless you make it a big deal like Dave does. Tuning is super accurate and super fast no one can tune manually faster period!! If you like manual cool, but don’t fret these either. Enjoy 🤗

Of course, you can make it sound awkward if you didn't like the robots in the first place. Apparently, when Mr Ford started producing his cars people said they just wanted faster horses.!

I've got a 1988 Strat with a steel roller nut that works perfectly (no one complains about these anymore although I have changed my Gibson brass one to titanium) and the other day I saw a guitar with metal flecks in the paint. So far I haven't noticed the Les Paul Signature or the hologram effecting the tone. Today on You Tube, wish I'd taken a note, there was a guitar from last century with Lester's signature on the back. I didn't need robot tuners. I don't play in alternate tunings much but it was the wide fret board and the gorgeous top that grabbed me. There are things that are not perfect but to me the feel and tone of the guitar are the most important things.However, the tuners are so quick that changing strings is a pleasure rather than a chore. Perhaps, I'll do some tonight!! Some people get players signatures all over their guitars and others pay to have them bashed about to look old. Whatever floats your boat. Peace and love! LOL
Unfortunately the company that invented that technology for the robot tuner were never paid for it by Gibson. So to add to Gibson's financial woes, they are now being sued for the technology they stole.
These tuners are being improved every year. The newest updated version work much better. This is the future. The alternate tunings are quick and plentiful and awesome.
I think this may be the one and only time I have more experience with something guitar related than Dave;-) I've pulled apart a bunch of these things and owned 6-7 guitars that had them. They're junk. They're just made out of cheap components, built to a price and have software you can't update. So whatever software bugs ship with each version of the unit, you end up stuck with, until the individual gears eventually fail, which they absolutely will. Powdered metal gears, mixed with plastic gears, mixed with brass gears, under constant tension. Junk waiting to fail controlled by software full of bugs.
"Powdered metal gears, mixed with plastic gears, mixed with brass gears" - Sintered powdered metal is a very strong material when produced under closely-controlled conditions. Engineering plastic (normally with built-in lubricant) is a very good material for a deliberately-designed dry-running gearbox, and the 'brass' is quite probably engineering bronze, also an excellent and strong bearing material. None of these materials are 'junk'. Think again.
Of course they _can._ But you give no reasons as to why you believe they _are._ "until the individual gears eventually fail, which they absolutely will" - is a truism. *All* mechanisms will eventually fail, and the mechanism failure _will be_ 'absolute', won't it? Even plain worm gears fail eventually. I agree with Dave about this mechanism, in that it's too elaborate and increases the risk of failure, and what's wrong with one's hand and ear? But your unexplained and unconditional condemnation appears to be idle and rather unpleasant.

I didn't even know the guitar had this feature and I strummed it to see if it was in tune and much to my surprise the robot just want to work and tuned the guitar.

I remember trying one of those robotuners for the first time. I really liked the idea you see. It was a Les Paul Studio model I think. The guy in the shop gave me the thing and I tried to get the thing in tune. The Low E string came off because it probably thought that's what I wanted it to do.... Honestly, I work with computers a lot, I'm no programmer or computer science major or anything, but I can handle most devices with a bit of patience, but the string came off and after fucking around and managing to get an other string loose I just gave it back. That thing didn't make any sense to me.
You can hear the guy in the boardroom at Gibson saying "Hey I got an idea, since we can't build a guitar that stays in tune lets build one that tries to tune it's self."
These are NOT made by Gibson. I use one of these tronical tuners on a telecaster, it replaces four other guitars in different tunings. The whiners here like you appearantly do not own these nor do they comprehend the specific use case. They do their job, changing tunings quick and perfectly.
You can tune these dudes manually, like any guitar as well. Once it has reasonable tension, you can strum all the strings and it tunes them all at once to pitch. Which is especially useful if you want to switch tunings on the fly. It's super quick to go between, say, E-standard and open D. It's not as ridiculous as some make it out to be, but it certainly isn't necessary. I bought one second hand just to give it a whirl. I liked it, but not enough to keep it so I sold it on to someone else.

I boomarked this one so I can come back to watch how a company can be so obsessed with improvement that a player can't tune his guitar without getting frustrated. Tuning is part of the playing experience and should be considered part of the enjoyment also.

you're completely fine using the tuning keys. you don't have to fiddle with the robot tuner at all if you don't want to. Just tune it like an other guitar. I guess that wouldn't garner as many views as "frustrated old man tangles with technology" Have fun.
Love this channel, but you nailed it. Dave is acting a bit for the camera, imo. I love the idea of these auto tuners mainly for the quick switches to alternate tunings. Probably not a good idea to have this as your main guitar, but seems like a fun tool to explore new worlds of tunings.

I bought one of these in the 2013 end of year sale. I paid, seriously, $258 for it. They couldn't give these guitars away back then. I paid $40 more for the goldtop p90 version. Many years and hundreds of hours of playing later.. its had new magnets, a new nut, new plastics, new knobs, new wiring, Grover locking tuners (that cost almost as much as the guitar did) and a refret. I literally wore them out. The best sounding guitar I have *ever* laid hands on. Just phenomenal. The neck is harder/denser wood than the body and it just sings even unplugged. Will always be my number one. Even though the 'satin' nitro finish is falling off in chunks now thanks to my xenomorph-like bodily fluids and the action is sky high with the 11-49 strings (that I have to top wrap or else). I've sold a Standard, a Trad, a Junior Special and a Custom Lite because I literally never played them. Price really is no indicator!
Love Les Pauls (yes, I know I have a strat on my profile pic. love those too). But, I wouldn't have one of those e-tune LP's up my ass if I had room for a battleship.
Man, you made that way harder for yourself then you needed to. String it up like you're supposed to do with locking tuners. Pull the string snug, not loosed and floppy like you did, but snug. Then attach in that under 180, up a level around 360 once (or twice with bare strings; 720) thing, and screw down the top. Finally, since strings are already snug, turn on tuner, strum all 6 strings at once, repeat every three seconds till they are tuned automatically.
I think it's safe enough to manually tune them as long as the system isn't turned on, so don't be scared... And if something should go wrong, it's the perfect excuse to swap for a set of Grovers. xD
I've got two SGs with Etuners, and they're marvellous. I've got pretty good ears, but these guys get it absolutely spot-on. Dave just complains about everything for the sake of it!
I was going to say, you don't have to frig about with all the buttons like this, or do it one by one, just switch on, strum across all six strings, and watch all the fun as they all come into tune. The most fun a guy can have standing up.
This is the first time I've seen the robo tuners actually used. It was informative to see how they work. There is a learning curve to any new tech. I'd still never want a guitar with those things. Tuning a guitar just isn't that hard. I don't need a gadget to do it.
I would have agreed, till I tried it! Tuning a guitar is not that hard, you're right, but when for instance you're on stage and you sense something has slipped, to be able to put it right in a very few seconds, or let the autotuner do it, when there's a lot of noise going on all around you, is really helpful.
When I heard Gibson had come out with their first Robot guitar I laughed. I knew it would be flawed. If you want to do a few songs in other tunings your supposed to use more than one guitar. It gives you the excuse to swap out during a gig. I bought that same notched straight edge . Great tool and it didn't cost a fortune.
I have several of the Gibson robot tuning guitars. When set up right, they work great. However, I will say they should have been an option, rather than standard equipment. I LIKE the tuning system... no whining.
I would've broke the neck on that damn thing in about 2 minutes. TH-cam was great until Google bought it. Go figure. We need to find another platform and bail on this.
the sam ash near me was getting rid of all their gibson robo-tuners a few months ago. coulda had the LP special in cherry brand new for $499. really thought about getting one, and spending the 60 bucks or whatever for some real tuners and just swapping them myself.
I’ve a collection of 12 guitars, one of which is a Gibson with robot tuners. I can take or leave it, it works, it’s simple. It’s easy to make something look shit if that’s what you intend to do.
I have a 2002 Les Paul that I fitted one of the e-tune systems to. It works good and I like it because I'm tone deaf as a post. It isn't a perfect system but it seems to work for me.
YEAH, when I bought my SG the guy at the (famous Canadian guitar store chain) said if I wanted to get the model with that friggin fiddly thing on it they would take it off and put a new set of Grover locking tuners on it for free if I wanted. It's a bad sign when the store will change out something for FREE. The reason they went to that is to try and combat the headstock/peghead angle issues with tuning.
Those tuners are quite nice but I have the new version that has an internet connection so I can tune my guitar from my Smartphone. (Geez... someone just hacked me into drop D again ...)
The Gibson G-Force tuners are fantastic, I've put them on my 5 Les Paul's and 2 SG's, easy to use, tunes up in seconds and you can use them as normal manual tuners if you want as long as it's not turned. I never understand why so many people complain about them if you don't like the smarts you can easily use them as normal tuners.
Utter rubbish. I made the mistake of buying a Gibson with this crap on it. They look awful, weigh a ton, and are unreliable and like dave says you have zero chance of changing any string fast if it breaks. And if you try and manually turn the machine head you notice it takes 7000 turns of the peg to produce 1 turn of the string post. I can only assume you work for Gibson.
I'm just telling you my experience, I love them. Yes the ratio when manually tuning is high but using a winder it's fine, I think 7000:1 is a slight exaggeration I think it's actually 40:1 so a little more than double of most manual tuners. Obviously they weight more but again a ton is again over exaggerated, the extra weight has never worried me, according to a post I found they weigh about 100 grams more than a set of Gibson Deluxe tuners. I find changing strings a breeze now particularly on the new model where you don't need to tighten the cap, but much easier now I'm used to using them a lot. No I don't work for Gibson.

I can tune a guitar without the robot, I don't NEED it, but it's cool to have this device to quickly change tunings. You probably would have been among those people who thought cars were pointless, cause, hey one can walk, or use a horse, so why use this new ugly machine, right? As I said, caveman mind. Buddy. And yeah, the reason why the telecaster is still so popular is because people are stupid and afraid of change.

I liked the robot tuners for the Gibson I had. I found it easy to use for the most part, stayed in tuned very well.

There's a job to be done - ditch the robot pegs and fit some Grovers! Yikes... what a nightmare.
I bought one of these in the 2013 end of year sale. I paid, seriously, $258 for it. They couldn't give these guitars away back then.
I paid $40 more for the goldtop p90 version. Many years and hundreds of hours of playing later.. its had new magnets, a new nut, new plastics, new knobs, new wiring, Grover locking tuners (that cost almost as much as the guitar did) and a refret. I literally wore them out. The best sounding guitar I have *ever* laid hands on. Just phenomenal. The neck is harder/denser wood than the body and it just sings even unplugged. Will always be my number one. Even though the 'satin' nitro finish is falling off in chunks now thanks to my xenomorph-like bodily fluids and the action is sky high with the 11-49 strings (that I have to top wrap or else). I've sold a Standard, a Trad, a Junior Special and a Custom Lite because I literally never played them. Price really is no indicator!
Love Les Pauls (yes, I know I have a strat on my profile pic. love those too). But, I wouldn't have one of those e-tune LP's up my ass if I had room for a battleship.
I think you have to strum it for the gizmo to hear the string while it tunes up.
Man, you made that way harder for yourself then you needed to.
String it up like you're supposed to do with locking tuners. Pull the string snug, not loosed and floppy like you did, but snug. Then attach in that under 180, up a level around 360 once (or twice with bare strings; 720) thing, and screw down the top. Finally, since strings are already snug, turn on tuner, strum all 6 strings at once, repeat every three seconds till they are tuned automatically.

There is a trick to those E Tune guitars. Step 1. THROW IN TRASH!!!!
I think it's safe enough to manually tune them as long as the system isn't turned on, so don't be scared... And if something should go wrong, it's the perfect excuse to swap for a set of Grovers. xD
I've got two SGs with Etuners, and they're marvellous. I've got pretty good ears, but these guys get it absolutely spot-on. Dave just complains about everything for the sake of it!
I was going to say, you don't have to frig about with all the buttons like this, or do it one by one, just switch on, strum across all six strings, and watch all the fun as they all come into tune. The most fun a guy can have standing up.

This is the first time I've seen the robo tuners actually used. It was informative to see how they work. There is a learning curve to any new tech. I'd still never want a guitar with those things. Tuning a guitar just isn't that hard. I don't need a gadget to do it.
I would have agreed, till I tried it! Tuning a guitar is not that hard, you're right, but when for instance you're on stage and you sense something has slipped, to be able to put it right in a very few seconds, or let the autotuner do it, when there's a lot of noise going on all around you, is really helpful.
Someone gave me a studio Frankenstein guitar from this era with these robot tuners. wtf were they thinking?

When I heard Gibson had come out with their first Robot guitar I laughed. I knew it would be flawed. If you want to do a few songs in other tunings your supposed to use more than one guitar. It gives you the excuse to swap out during a gig. I bought that same notched straight edge . Great tool and it didn't cost a fortune.
The new Gibson is the easiest guitar ever to play. All you do is wind the crank on the side. I especially like when the clown pops out.

I have several of the Gibson robot tuning guitars. When set up right, they work great. However, I will say they should have been an option, rather than standard equipment. I LIKE the tuning system... no whining.
I would've broke the neck on that damn thing in about 2 minutes. TH-cam was great until Google bought it. Go figure. We need to find another platform and bail on this.
the sam ash near me was getting rid of all their gibson robo-tuners a few months ago. coulda had the LP special in cherry brand new for $499. really thought about getting one, and spending the 60 bucks or whatever for some real tuners and just swapping them myself.

I’ve a collection of 12 guitars, one of which is a Gibson with robot tuners. I can take or leave it, it works, it’s simple. It’s easy to make something look shit if that’s what you intend to do.
A. Fox seems strange to me how people hate on this system then use a boss or other tuning aid.
IngLouisSchreurs yes it’s easy enough to see, hit one button bottom right of the unit and strum...that’s it. Guitar reasonably in tune.
I have a 2002 Les Paul that I fitted one of the e-tune systems to. It works good and I like it because I'm tone deaf as a post. It isn't a perfect system but it seems to work for me.

YEAH, when I bought my SG the guy at the (famous Canadian guitar store chain) said if I wanted to get the model with that friggin fiddly thing on it they would take it off and put a new set of Grover locking tuners on it for free if I wanted. It's a bad sign when the store will change out something for FREE. The reason they went to that is to try and combat the headstock/peghead angle issues with tuning.
Those tuners are quite nice but I have the new version that has an internet connection so I can tune my guitar from my Smartphone. (Geez... someone just hacked me into drop D again ...)

The Gibson G-Force tuners are fantastic, I've put them on my 5 Les Paul's and 2 SG's, easy to use, tunes up in seconds and you can use them as normal manual tuners if you want as long as it's not turned. I never understand why so many people complain about them if you don't like the smarts you can easily use them as normal tuners.
Utter rubbish. I made the mistake of buying a Gibson with this crap on it. They look awful, weigh a ton, and are unreliable and like dave says you have zero chance of changing any string fast if it breaks. And if you try and manually turn the machine head you notice it takes 7000 turns of the peg to produce 1 turn of the string post. I can only assume you work for Gibson.
I'm just telling you my experience, I love them. Yes the ratio when manually tuning is high but using a winder it's fine, I think 7000:1 is a slight exaggeration I think it's actually 40:1 so a little more than double of most manual tuners. Obviously they weight more but again a ton is again over exaggerated, the extra weight has never worried me, according to a post I found they weigh about 100 grams more than a set of Gibson Deluxe tuners.
I find changing strings a breeze now particularly on the new model where you don't need to tighten the cap, but much easier now I'm used to using them a lot.

neun Arme Is that you telling us you can’t tune a guitar without some shit Robot tuners to help you out? Not all change is good buddy, especially when it looks god awful and doesn’t work very well. There’s a very good reason why the Telecaster is still so popular.
I can tune a guitar without the robot, I don't NEED it, but it's cool to have this device to quickly change tunings. You probably would have been among those people who thought cars were pointless, cause, hey one can walk, or use a horse, so why use this new ugly machine, right? As I said, caveman mind. Buddy.
