The inventor of the Clavinet is the grandfather of a friend of mine. He's 90+ and still inventing stuff. I'm hoping to meet him soon which will be amazing given that he invented an instrument that shaped the sound of funk and soul music so much.

Maybe I'm wrong. I tend to listen to that song for sheer enjoyment rather than listening for the note-to-note analysis. But ... I've heard it said that that you can NEVER play it like it sounds on the recording because there are TWO Clav tracks on the recording.

Thank You @Doctor Mix .... This would have to be the MOST not correctly played pop song on any keyboard instrument. First thing is that the LEFT hand is playing the motif, the RH is comping/ghost-noting as you point out. THEN we have "a whole other, secondary Clavinet part going on, as well" as you mention. The rest is all about "note durations", landing on "the pocket" and .... "variations". "Easy" but "very very difficult".

Something worth to mention is that the timing is in 24th (six-tuples) rather than 16th, and that adds to the grove. Like playing mini-triplets

According the visual on the video you have brilliant and high engaged, medium and soft off, and D and B for pickup settings (first 2 switches down, last 4 switches up). I believe a closer setting is brilliant, high and medium engaged, and C and B for pickups (first 3 switches down 4th up, 5th down, 6th up), no damper. I think that you will find that this is closer in sound than your settings.

Feel accounts for so much when you're trying to wrap your head around a player's style. For example, I learned years ago the trick to John Frusciante's guitar style can be learned by watching him strum a guitar. It's all alternating up and down, generally steady, rhythmic strumming and he makes the notes he wants by being able to play and mute strings with his left hand. That's where his funk comes from. He plays Scar Tissue live by strumming up and down, not plucking. It's all jamming on all the strings, almost banging on the guitar to express the rhythm.

Stevie heard the synthesizer album Zero Point by Tonto's Expanding Head Band, and wanted to work with the electronic musicians who made it, Malcolm Cecil and Robert Margouleff, and their custom behemoth synthesizer TONTO. "The Original New Timbral Orchestra" was the first, and still the largest, multitimbral polyphonic analog synthesizer in the world. All three are featured on Isley Brothers records as well. Read the Wikipedia articles and enjoy!

The instrument (Hohner Clavinet model D6) is fantastic too, I don't think its been well emulated yet.
To my ears in addition to the Clavi sound there is a beautiful crunch and distortion coming from the pickups/preamps that give it such bite and growl. I have been looking for a Clavinet for years here in Australia, but they are VERY expensive here in Australia!

Indeed. Michael McDonald's "I Keep Fogettin' " was one of the last "pop" songs that featured a true and bonafide Clavinet, played by multi-keyboardist extraordinaire Greg Phillinganes, I believe. That song was mixed so extremely well, that the sound of Greg's Clav, McDonald's Fender Rhodes, Porcaro's drums and Johnson's bass...all playing in sync...created even further, a sound that made that whole song sounded like ONE BIG GIGANTIC instrument!
Those types of recording, engineering, mixing and techniques of creativity are, oh so, very long gone today. "Sampled" indeed, but nearly impossible to re-create. And so beit.

WOW! Very nice deconstructing, as always! But yes, I agree that´s a little to much distortion (as I hear it on the record). But that is just a detail ;)

course, this is digital, and if it was pingponged/overdubbed the tape would warm it up.

    BUON ANNO!

I really do not like to correct people that know more about any topic than I do, even if I have a long trajectory of engaging in the same profession of hobby. So Doctor, i will say very humbly that there is possibly a part where Stevie is using an echo machine to play the main riff set to the bpm of the song with one or two repeats. Then is another part where Stevie plays the riff through the echo machine set at 1/3 of the song bpm with 7 or 8 repeats. Something very much like what Dave Gilmour did when recording "Run like hell", so he gets a very rhythmic interplay in a dense layer of the same riff.

Wow, I didn't know Tom Morello played clavinet as well. In fact, I didn't even know such a thing as clavinet existed.

Stevie only has his right hand flat and the left hand more of a standard style, this would make your version a little cleaner imo.

Stevie Wonder is the best clavinet player ever! He's been using this as instrument ever since he recorded "Shoo-Be-Do-Be-Do-Be-Do-Da-Day" back in 1968 (on his early hits such as "Fingertips" and "I Was Made to Love Her", Stevie's main instrument was the harmonica, he was playing keys ever since his career began, but it was "Superstition" that really established his keyboard playing, whereas "Fingertips" and "I Was Made to Love Her" mostly showcase his harmonica playing). I said it once and I'll say it again; Stevie is the best clavinet player ever and it's virtually impossible to think of the clavinet without thinking of Stevie Wonder "and" without thinking of "Superstition". Not to change the subject, but the first song to feature this instrument was "Let Go of You Girl" (1967) by a band called The Left Banke, played by Michael Brown. The first single to feature the clavinet was "I Thank You" by Sam & Dave (1968), where sources seem to differ about who the performer there was; some sources say it was the co-writer/producer/arranger, Isaac Hayes, while other sources say that Isaac Hayes played organ on "I Thank You", while Booker T. Jones performed the clavinet part. The first known usage of the clavinet with the wah-wah pedal is "Up On Cripple Creek" by The Band (1969), played by Garth Hudson. Ike Turner (better known for his guitar playing, but he was also proficient on keyboards) played the clavinet on the Ike & Tina Turner hit "Nutbush City Limits". But aside from Stevie Wonder (and this is just my opinion) another one of the best clavinet players would have to be Billy Preston, who played the clavinet on his instrumental "Outta Space" (alongside the Hammond B3 organ, playing both instruments with a wah-wah pedal) and on The Rolling Stones funk-oriented single "(Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo) Heartbreaker". I highly recommend the clavinet parts of "Outta Space" and "Heartbreaker".
