RAF Scampton: Nearby residents react to proposals to house 2,000 asylum seekers at airbase

  • RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire is best known for being where the "dambusting" bomber squadron was based during the Second World War.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
    The huge site closed for military use back in March with the Government saying it wants to accommodate up to two thousand people there who are seeking asylum.
    The local council and many residents object to the plans but not everyone is opposed.

    You can't get a place more opposite of the streets of London than rural Lincolnshire around Scampton.
    The people are outnumbered by sheep.
    We once had a couple from London retire to a house in the same road as where my parents live in their small rural Lincolnshire village. They thought it was great until experiencing a couple of winters out here. They upsticks and left. It was too harsh for them.
    Being cut off for days with no amenities because the roads were impassible so you couldn't even get to a supermarket for bread and milk, no electricity for days so there was no internet and no mobile phone reception so it's not like they could ring anyone. It was literally sit and wait it out in a cold house.
    That soon showed who the southern softies were. They had to move to somewhere which was less isolated so they at least had a few shops, a restraunt and pub nearby.

    If you spoke to the local community, I would guess that the divide between those in favour of the centre and those against would be about 15% to 85%. That would be pretty typical of the views of people in the UK. At the last UK general election (2019) less than 1% of the UK population voted for a far-right party, yet Channel 4 , as always on this dort of issue wants to associate the 85% of people opposed to this plan with the 1% of the population who hold ultra right wing ideas.

    If these are genuine asylum seekers and not just illegal economic migrants chancing their arm I have no problem here and would have no problem with this if the base were right next to me. However, we (and Europe more generally) needs to seriously address the migration issue. I’m pro legal immigration and obviously pro helping out genuine asylum seekers. But we have borders in this world, for better or worse, and surely every country, *every* country has the right to determine *exactly* who and who it does not admit. In the same way that every home-owner has a right to decide who to let into their house, Europe has this same right. As far as I can tell, most (the vast majority in fact) of the incoming migrants to Europe are simply economic migrants and unless they have specific skills they can contribute to a given country’s economy or unless they are bona fide *genuine* refugees fleeing life-threatening war/persecution, a strong message should be sent out that the doors will be locked when they arrive at Europe’s house.

    • @titteryenot4524
      @titteryenot4524 ปีที่แล้ว

      @dondoodat Neither do I. All I’m saying is that the host country decides for economic migrants. There is enough opportunity on this planet for many of these migrants to go to places other than Europe. If someone came to your front door and kicked it open demanding the right to stay you’d not be happy. And you’d be right not to be happy. Economic immigration should always be at the say of the host country, whichever country that may be.

    • @titteryenot4524
      @titteryenot4524 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @dondoodat Not a “drama queen” response at all. Perfectly calm and logical here, mate. Last year there were 45,755 arriving in boats across the Channel. Some of these people will be genuine asylum seekers and those who are can stay, no further debate. The vast majority, however, are young men seeking economic opportunity. That’s fine. All I’m saying is that the UK has the right of refusal if they are economic migrants. This really *isn’t* that difficult and I’m not sure why it’s even up for debate.

    Let's see if I've got this right. Housing asylum seekers on a part of Scampton's 800 acres is a "bad thing." Edward Leigh says it's not about being anti migrant but about the particular historic significance of Scampton and its runway. Its association with the 1943 dams raid, etc, is historically important. Fair enough. Then, he says that it jeopardises a £ 300 million development proposal for the site of RAF Scampton. Am I missing something ? If you're going to develop the Scampton site, which usually means houses or / and a business park, how does that "preserve" its historic runway and buildings ? WHY would you preserve a runway at all, unless you keep it as an airfield ? RAF Wickenby the wartime HQ of 626 squadron among others is smaller than Scampton, but its runway, or at least a big chunk it is preserved, because it's still used. Wickenby is in use as an airfield for light aircraft and microlights. Unless you keep Scampton as an airfield, even if a civil one, why would you keep a runway ? Personally I don't see the difference between a part of it being used for asylum seekers, or all of it disappearing under Barratt boxes.

    It is no use placating your do gooder attitude by just providing accommodation. You need to give refugees and asylum seekers a sense of purpose - and that means providing them with a means of enhancing thief self worth by PROVIDING jobs and education. If you just dump them, patting yourself on the back for all to see, then, you are creating a problem and you should be held accountable.

    • @brunolondinese5857
      @brunolondinese5857 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, you just need to speculate that an iconic RAF base might be used to home refugees. That way, on one side you have people who are proud of british soldiers and on the other side you have people tolerant of refugees. You cant be both, youre polar opposites, get busy and hate eachother.

    • @tjmarx
      @tjmarx ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This plan has nothing to do with refugees. A refugee is someone whose asylum claim has been successfully processed and they've been found to meet the domestic criteria for asylum. All refugees are temporary and must return to their county of origin once the conflict or regime which makes them eligible for asylum has ended.
      The people this plan is about are people whom have made an irregular border crossing and have subsequently claimed asylum. Claiming asylum does not automatically make someone a refugee nor does it automatically make their claim valid.
      No, asylum claimants are not entitled to work during their initial processing period. That isn't just domestic law, it's part of the refugees convention.
