- Shallow Pocket Water Nymphing can be an absolute blast!
Join me as I Euro Nymph a small PA stream in springtime. Learning to fish fast-flowing streams and pocket water will help you put more trout in the net. It's the type of water that a lot of anglers pass up and/or struggle with. Whether you are a seasoned angler or a beginner looking to up your game, this video can help you master this water.
Once you learn to fish it correctly, you will find how much fun it is!
The fly of the day was a size 16 Culiroja perdigon (Spanish Bullet). 80% of the time I fished a single 2.5mm bead.
Hope you enjoy it!
Tight lines!
Cory

Greatest fly fisherman I’ve ever had the pleasure of fishing with.
Thank you, Brother! Awesome of you to say!
Hey Cory
Thank you for yet another great video . Watching and learning from your videos is second best thing to actually being on the river .Keep them coming.
It was pleasure meeting you on the One -on -One season. Thank you for making that possible !
Tight lines ,
Appreciate it, Sead! Nice of you to say!
Pleasure meeting you, as well, I really enjoyed it!
Continued success to you and I'll keep them coming. Tight lines, my friend!
Nice video! Cast, reach and come back to maintain contact with your nymphs in faster water is a great tip.
Thanks Adam! Glad the tip helps. Good luck and tight lines to you.
I was on youtube and received a notification announcing this video so I have the pleasure of being the first to comment on a another great video. I live in Monument CO and this time year we get a lot of breezy days so I watch the forecast for days with slower wind speeds as fishing is much easier. In between those days I look forward to watching you you fish as it is the next best thing to being out on the water. Thanks for another informative vid!
Thank you, William! Happy I can fill in the gap so you can get your fishing fix! You live in a beautiful area of the world. Love it out West. Tight lines to you and thank you for commenting!
Excellent Cory as usual!!!!
Thank you, Scott! Hope you are doing well! Tight lines!
Hey Cory! Another great video. Love pocket water ,so many people just walk by it. You gave great examples of fishing it as usual.Tightlines my friend!
Thank you, Dale! Love that shallow pocket water! Appreciate you watching, my friend!
Really enjoyed this! I learned and confirmed many things. Thank you for taking us along.🎏
Thanks for coming along, Ben. Glad you enjoyed it!
Weight management is key. Thanks Cory!
Right on, Uni. Appreciate you watching!
Good Lawd atsa lot of fish! Please send some of those to your friendly neighbors here in Central Ohio. 😁
Haha. PA may have some to spare, Thomas! Appreciate you watching!
I love fast pocket water, so this was a real treat. Water like that really helps you hone your cast and you can't beat the setting!
It's fun water to fish, JJ! And you are right, the setting is a plus. Tight lines and thanks for watching!
Really appreciate these learn so much from the videos
Thanks, Adams Flyco. Glad they are helpful. Tight lines to you!
Do you remember the size o-rings you used to add mono wrap? Your videos are the best on you tube. Thanks for taking the time to make them.
Aa-ron, I bought an assorted-size pack from Amazon. It wasn't costly. You'll be able to find the size that fits your rod. Appreciate the comment and thanks for watching!
Excellent session once again. Thanks for the advice on the Pezon and Michel line , I just ordered some now .
Thanks, Rob! Happy to help. You are going to love the Pezon. Tight lines to you!
ALWAYS look forward to your videos! Thank you for your great lessons. I've got most of the set up to my likings and its a huge thanks to your lessons that I've been hooking into lot more fishing while others are watching me. Are you directly ordering the Pezon & Michel line from Europe? Any suggestion where to order? I am in Canada, if you could suggest where I could order the same line, I'd really appreciate it. I think that is the only thing I'm missing out of the equation. Thank you and please keep the addictive videos coming. This is the only way to get high when off the water.
Thank you. Steelhead! Appreciate it. I do get the Pezon from Europe. A couple of shops sell it, but the best source is Riversfly.com out of Spain.
Glad I can help you get your fishing fix while you are not on the water. I'll keep them coming. Tight lines to you!
@@OldDominionTroutBum Thank you again! Appreciate it!
I caught my personal best last week. 22" Beautiful rainbow thanks to your videos.
Love hearing that! Congrats to you and I'm glad the videos help! Continued success to you. Tight lines!
Great video Cory all ways leaning looking for pocket water and adjusting weights also casting tips 👍
Thanks, Jerome! Keep at it. I appreciate you watching!
First class Cory, great to see you back at it, tight lines buddy👌
Thank you, Douglas! Appreciate you watching, my friend. Tight lines to you, as well!
Great job as always. I'd love to see you set up a camera about 25' away on a tripod or something so we can see all the movements. Thank you.
Yes that would be next level master class.
Thanks, Greg. I would love to do that, so I'm taking volunteers for cameramen. I'll pay in beers and cigars! I may do something like that in the future, my beautiful wife has volunteered to film me. Appreciate you watching!
I’m in the Catskills and I’d be happy to help. I’m semi pro.
Nice of you to offer, Greg! I’ll keep it in mind the next time I hit the Catskills.
Another great video Cory! I noticed you were using an extra long leader (ie no euro fly line in your guides). Any advice/reasoning for using extra long micro leaders vs a length where you have some fly line in your guides? Are you moving more towards a full micro leader mono rig? Thanks again for these videos-Dustin
Hey Dustin. Thanks so much!
A lot of times I’ll start out with a longer leader if I know I’ll be casting light bugs. It shoots them out with ease that way. If I start out longer, I can always shorten to my liking. I would rather do that instead of adding. Hope this helps. Appreciate you watching!
Always like your Central PA trips. What is your source for the pink/white leader/tippet
Thanks Robert. I get it from Riversfly.com.
Pezon & Michel Color Line
That is a gem of a spot, I caught an 18 in that same area where your camera battery cut out. I try to get there when I'm central PA.
It sure is, Darrell. The whole stream is a gem. Appreciate you watching and tight lines to you.
Great video, as always. Now, mix it up and try something different. How about euro nymphing with a standard fly rod, just to see if it works. I’m sure it’s harder, but it would be a riot to watch you try it. I bet you still catch a bunch.
Haha. Thanks, Mr, J. I love my fishing time too much to do that. When the dry fly rod comes with me, it's only for one thing! Appreciate you watching. Hope the Spring has been good to you.
Speaking of a standard fly rod, how do like to attach a tapered leader to a WF floating fly line? I see videos of “Pros” saying “Cut off the welded loop on the fly line and tie a nail knot”. Thank you Corey.
@@Vectorp47 I don't loop to loop. I will just tie my leader directly to the loop of the fly line. The loop doesn't interfere because it is outside the guides when casting. That being said, there is nothing wrong with a nail knot. Has been and is always great.
Ok so excellent video as usual. Can you give us an explanation on why you use a 2 weight rod versus a 3
Thank you, Chris. I'll be coming out with a video on that in the near future. In the meantime, it is really based on a few factors. I'll use a 2wt if I'll be casting 2.8mm beads or less (80% of the time) and using a lot of 7x (and occasionallly going to 6x). If I am fishing heavier flows and using a lot of 3.3 mm beads and larger and/or getting a heavy dose of larger fish, I'll go with the 3wt. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
Love it! Quick question, which colored section of sighter do you prefer tied to the tippet ring first, the pink or the white?
Appreciate it! I prefer the pink at the tippet ring. Thanks for watching!
Another great vid. If you ever have time can you go over you line and leader setup. Do you or have you fished a mono rig? Just started to learn tight lining watching you , George Daniels and Dom swentosky. Thanks for what you do
Thanks, Pete! I have done a video on my setup. You can watch it here:
th-cam.com/video/_LsHADwel28/w-d-xo.htmlsi=mRUFwRyuwIfTWQg-
By mono rig-if you mean Troutbitten's mono rig...I have tried it long ago (before I even knew about TB-just a different variation). Personally, it isn't for me. Modern rods today are too good and that leader is really made for older rods that weren't engineered the way euro rods are today. For beginners and straight-up nymphing, I would always suggest 8lb test to 3x sighter instead of the "mono rig".
Hope this helps.
Btw, It's George Daniel's...Charlie Daniel's played "The Devil Went Down to GA"!
Fantastic video like all the others Cory.
I consider that piece of water one of my primary training grounds so I lit up when I realized what you working lol. Such a wonderful piece of water.
Couple quick questions regarding the bullet just out of curiosity. That’s one of my favorite flies and tie more of those than any other. Mostly because it does everything so well (easy to tie, gets down quick, looks pretty, etc) but also for a couple sentimental reasons.
Never heard ‘culiroja’ before tho and was wondering the history/translation of that. Never really have found too much info on the Spanish bullet and my bilingual skills are sketchy at best.
Also when I tie 16 or larger, I’ve ended up just using thread and small black wire rather than stripped quills just because it seems its getting harder to find good quality quills. When a certain company came out with them recently I got all excited. Although now readily available, seems like the quality is 50/50 unfortunately. I also make a tiny variation by tying those on curved Czech hooks with inverting beads. Just love the look that gives.
Just wondering how you tie yours. Probably overkill on questions over a simple perdigon style fly lol, but much like the water I do love that fly.
Love what you do and how you do it my friend, thank you. Keep it going
Thank you, Severin! Glad you enjoyed it. It is a beautiful stretch.
"Ciliroja" in Spanish means red butt or red ass. It is one of the original perdigons. Seems appropriate...
Quality quills are becoming harder and harder to come by. I simply use thread and rib it black to make a thread quill and it will give you the same effect.
I tie my Culirojas the way the Spanish tie it. 2 different ways:
UTC black thread for the body and red flashabou for the butt. The second way is using red Glo-brite for the butt. One is a subtle flash and the other is fluorescent. Mostly silver beads but I will have some copper beads as well. I'll tie them in sizes 20-14. It is a staple perdigon in my box and it is a proven fish catcher all around the world.
I appreciate you watching and tight lines, my friend.
Hey Cory! Great to see you back at it. Always enjoy your videos. Not sure where in PA you were, but that’s a nice looking stream. I really like your advice of the single fly on a shorter leader. I get stubborn fishing two flies. I’m going to try that more-especially in pocket water and shallow riffles.
Thank you, Jeff! Appreciate it. That is a fun little stream. You'll like going to one fly in situations like this. Hope the Spring has been good to you. Tight lines!
Nice vid, as always, Cory! I have a T&T contact II in the mail that I can't wait to get on the water. You commented that you are using rubber o-rings instead of plumbers tape to hold on your tippet spiral...do you happen to know which rings you are using? What size are they? Thanks for the great content and for making us all more productive anglers!
Thanks, Jordan! You are going to love your T&T. Congrats! I couldn't tell you the size. I bought a small plastic box through Amazon that comes with multiple sizes and chose the ones that fit my rod, You can google Amazon rubber o-rings and for 10 bucks you'll get a boat load.
Appreciate the kind words and good luck with your new stick!
Is this the 2wt T&T? Was this also the rod you fished on the Madison last summer?
Hey Mark, this was a T&T 10ft 9in 2wt. I used the 10ft 9in 3wt on the Madison.
Cory, do you find you get more fish on the dropper when you use a 2 fly rig?
Jason, it is situational. When bugs are popping and the fish are spread out through the column then that’s when the dropper will get a lot of action.
Thanks Cory, I was wondering what diameter tippet you use in a day to dat basis. I was wondering if your takes and drift were altered if you used a 6x, 5x or r 4x flouro tippet ? Thanks much
Rjf, day in and day out, I use 6x-7x. The thicker you go, the more your drifts are altered. If you go thicker, you have to counter it with heavier bugs. For most waters, 6x is a great tippet to use. Quality 6x is a lot stronger than most people think.
Thanks Corey, today I'm changing my micro leader set up to your formula with Sempe 18. I was wondering if you using this micro set up when you did your tuck cast video ? Thanks very much
@@rjf1877 Yes, I did. It was 18mm.
Great, I'm setting mine up right now with Sempe 18. I've been using Cortland Euro Nymph Leader 6# for my micro leader and never thought about using the tuck cast, only the oval. Do you notice much difference between the Cortland leader and Tempe? I hope you don't mind, but I asked you the same question on your tuck cast video ! Thanks again
@rjf1877 oval casts are highly inaccurate. It is a myth that you need to do it. Cortland sighter has colors that pop compared to Sempe. For pure casting, Sempe is superior.
Hi buddy what line do you use love to get the same setup like you
I have my set up in the description. Thanks for watching.
Thank you bud 👍🎣
Hey, you forgot to list the stogie you're puffing on. You know, once you're finished, the USFS states you should bury that at least 200 feet from the stream and 8" down. 😆 Once, while on a dive trip to Cozumel, I went to the local cigar shop. Said 'Give me one whatever-it-is that Mr. Castro smokes'. I choked my way through the entire thing. That was the end of my cigar puffing career. Now, I'm just waiting for that errant gust of wind that blows your leader over your cigar.
On a serious note, excellent points as usual. If I've learned nothing else, it's that you don't have to pass up on skinny water. Get in there! There's fish to be had.
@jtahoe5672 haha! Castro smoked the strong ones! And does it count that my cigar kept going out in the rain?? Haven’t lost a leader to one yet!
That skinny water this time of year is where they are at, especially on those low cloud cover/rainy days. It is fun water to fish. Appreciate you watching!
A few months ago on a local river i ran into a couple of ladies who moved from PA to Utah. I had to ask why would they move to Utah for the fishing. Turns out they also like to ski.
Just curious. Why don't you capture the fly line under a finger on your rod hand once you make the cast?
Thanks.
Hey TL. Sounds like those ladies made a great choice!
If you watch my videos, you'll see I put my line under my finger quite a bit. But I also use the "Vector Retrieve" (which is what I am doing)...especially in this type of water. We need to get in contact right away and sometimes that split second it takes to put it under your finger is enough to lose contact.
I've actually done a video on the ways to manage your line.

Hope this helps. Appreciate you watching.
@@OldDominionTroutBum Thanks for the reply.
I had watched that video before, but now it makes more sense.
Thanks again.
@@tl56kmair Anytime, TL. Good luck to you.
Mr Round Fin! Too bad they keep stocking over class A water.
Really don’t understand why they do it. Makes zero sense. Appreciate you watching!
Hi Cory, wondering if you lay down a bed of backing for your fly line. 🪰 Thank you for sharing your talents.. As always plenty of golden nugget tips🐟🐟
Rod, you always want backing on your fly reels. If you don't, you will even make a large arbor spool a smaller arbor. When your spool is filled, the line comes off easier with less coiling. Thanks so much for watching.
