Euro Nymphing Esopus Creek, NY: Rainbows of the Catskills

  • A day spent Euro Nymphing Esopus Creek Rainbows (and a Brown!) in the NY Catskills. High sun and low, clear water had the fish moved into pocket water. Had great success on a size 18 Stupid Simple Pheasant Tail. The key was really managing my weight to deal with the changing water and wind conditions.
    I give you some helpful tips as well.
    Hope you enjoy!

    I just want to thank both you and Scott at "Pa Woods n Water"---As an angler less skilled than yourselves, you both not only exude the joy of nymphing, but you are both so free and helpful with your free flow of information. Of course, knowing the "cold facts": of your locations, equipment and techniques will not make us "experts" and will neither reduce your fishing or somehow create a stampede run to your spots. However, it does help us to both understand how you do it and increase our enthusiasm to learn---GREATLY APPRECIATED!!! THANK YOU!!

      @@OldDominionTroutBum There's a good amount of guys on TH-cam who lose fish constantly because of poor line control and pick up. I'm in western NY and am looking to fish the Esopus this season. Looks like planning around the portal release is critical m, except for fishing above. Good fly fishing is a delicate art. Nice to see someone who can handle a fly rod properly.

    Awesome video Man thanks for sharing. I’m new to ESN, most have told me to use only thin mono off the real because any a thin euro specific fly line will create sag but after watching your videos I see great tight drifts. Must be much more pleasant to fish than a straight super thin mono rig of 30 or so feet. I’m going to pick up some euro line. Looking forward to your next adventure, thanks again.

    • @OldDominionTroutBum
      @OldDominionTroutBum  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Gus! Appreciate you watching and commenting. I use a thin mono leader attached to my euro line. The euro line rarely makes it out of the tip of the rod. It gives me the tactile feel of fly line in my hand and helps tremendously with line management. For me, it is a much more pleasant way to fish. Tight lines to you!

    • @guskirchoff3573
      @guskirchoff3573 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OldDominionTroutBum thanks for the reply, I finally picked up some Cortland mono core nymph line in .17 and a little bigger diameter as well. Can I ask what knot you use to connect your euro leader to the mono so it glides so easily through the guides? That’s the last piece of the puzzle I need to put together correctly I think and then I’ll be on my way. Thanks again.

    • @OldDominionTroutBum
      @OldDominionTroutBum  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@guskirchoff3573 with the mono core you have to strip off a couple of inches of coating, then blood knot your leader to it. It works well with 8# or higher test. Just put a little knot sense or uv glue on the knot to smooth it.
      I use a braid core. I strip off the end and whip finish a small loop into it, then use a 16-20 knot to tie my thin leader directly to the small loop.

    • @OldDominionTroutBum
      @OldDominionTroutBum  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m using Pezon & Michel mono in 18mm. Sempe is very similar and you can find it easier. The casting stroke is a George Daniel style stroke. Semi traditional with a smooth slide of the forearm and more wrist movement. Try to take you whole arm out of it. Keep you forearm infront and cock your wrist back. Wait until you feel the bugs “tug” behind your before you go forward. Do it with a smooth slight, acceleration at the end.

      Dave, I use a thin leader. 18mm Sempe or Pezon & Michel. ( Sempe is easier to get. Tactical Fly Fisher sells it. ). My leader to the tippet ring is approx 18-20 feet. I use a nymphing line and off of that go 14-16ft of 18mm Sempe mono to 4ft of 5x Hanak bi-color sighter. From my tippet ring I usually run approx 4ft of tippet to my bottom fly. I like a short tippet. You can control it better and in deeper water, you can dip your sighter if need to because it’s so thin. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
