Mercy Me! How rare is it to hear someone touched by the divine, and with the discipline to take that talent to its ultimate expression? If this were the only tune Keith Jarrett had ever recorded, it would be enough. But there's more. So much more. It's a privilege to be alive at the same time as this great, great artist, and to be able to hear him in modern high fidelity.
the whole concert is dazzling, but indeed this encore is absolutely genius keith jarrett is imo one of the most versatile and melodically intresting pianists out there
The result of a brilliant, sensitive and talented man's lifetime of rigorous self discipline, sacrifice, suffering and ultimately triumph. I'd like to thank him and tell him it's been worth it. But I think he already knows.
Esta canción siempre me recuerda a mi padre. Se emocionaba al escucharla en la película Magnolia, y también cuando la cantaba Frank Sinatra. Keith Jarrett la convierte en obra maestra en esta actuación tan llena de sentimiento. Maravilloso
I was lucky enough to hear him play this live many years ago. I was beyond stunned. Completely overwhelmed by the beauty this man evokes. Interestingly (if my aging memory serves me correctly) he played it as a ballad all the way through. Beyond beautiful, beyond sublime. His music is a most precious gift. (P.S. there is a transcription of this available for those of you not silly enough to be "anti-transcriptionists". LOL
I especially like the beginning of the piece, where he somehow manages to make it both minimalistic and complex and finally resolves in such an emotional way into this C-major chord, and starting over again.
What is very good about that song is that Keith Jarrett mixes various styles, for sure. But, more than that, the transitions are exceptionnal for an improvised song. Well done, Mr. Jarrett.
This is a terrific and so versatile performance!! I do not know why everybody is impressed about that fugato (5:15 - 5:40). Maestro Jarrett recorded all the preludes and fugues written by JS Bach and twenty four preludes and fugues written by Shostakovich. It seems that playing fugues is the plainest matter for him. What a genius!!
I think it’s all about the difference between “playing a fugue you are reading or have memorized” and “composing a musically interesting fugue in real time”.
5:14 is like Bach, and then at 5:43 beautiful transition to Elton John-like gospel-like funky gooving! I love this track. My favorite track on the Tokyo concert DVD!
He and Bill Evans are the only people I've heard who can explore the inherent beauty in these songs. The stage productions never did them justice as they were all dressed up in big orchestration. Has he ever performed Some Enchanted Evening does anyone know?
For a long long time the church was one of the only organizations that could afford to patronize the arts, so at one point or another most music period was church music, including Bach, the passions, most opera, gospel, Motown, R & B, even blues, which is an ironic one- that was really the church feeding one hand with the other. Just remember to put this is perspective- the music influences the church, not the other way around. The musicians were essential and irreplaceable to what was going on.
there is no fugato in the middle part. it is polyphony, with some imitation, over a pedal point, which is indeed a baroque technique, and my comment takes nothing away from keith's unbelievable and touching performance
Bob, he would practice imporvising on the pieces he knows he is going to play. HE would work some things out for sure before hand. Also, Keith has a massive repetoir of chordal patterns and runs he puts in many of his songs. When you get to that level it is more about selecting from what you know than truly making up stuff
Simply glorious, always. Magic and unique KEITH JARRETT. Love YOUR PLAYING forever!

well said, my friend
When he finishes and turns to the audience, it's like he has not fully come out of the dimension he was in. No words
Immenso. Blues e....Bach. Fantastiche e mirabilanti contaminazioni. Pianista di una sensibilità infinita.

Hey I checked out one trancription, but unfortunaltely there are many note missing/wrong notes. I might use it and try to change some things.
I can't stop listening to this it's incredible.
Can't say a single word! It's marvelous, perfect, out of this mad world. Thanks for sharing such a masterpiece!!!!!!!!!

We're impressed because he's a genius. And we're not.

It's Bach, it's gospel, all of this is church music when I come to think about it.
Mrius86 mmmm, you nailed it here
Jarrett reminds me often in church service. His Gospel ostinati are magnificient 🤩❤👏

… out of this world … ok…. And it is * h e a v en l y*
this is god speaking
It is so beautiful! But, I'm wondering, the beautiful part starting at 5:14 and ending at 5:43 is that 100% impro?
there is no fugato in the middle part. it is polyphony, with some imitation, over a pedal point, which is indeed a baroque technique, and my comment takes nothing away from keith's unbelievable and touching performance
I play piano too...KJ is slightly better than me.
slothvader!
Great line! I'm gonna steal it, for sure. Keith Jarrett summed (pun intended!) up in 5 words! I love it. Are you a writer?
Or both!?
Old man River with Willian Warfield, Samuel ramey, and muslim magomaev, the most strong and beautiful song in the World.
mine too ;-)
