I’ve bought 3 ultegra R8000 groupsets (~ $400) and 3 R7000 105 groupsets (~ $200) (shifters, derailleurs and brakes) All been genuine Shimano parts and work flawlessly - they would just be too hard to fake - the chains and brake pads are fake - but they are fake on Amazon too :)
i bought a Shimano M5100 rear mech on ebay from a Chinese seller a few months ago which I think may be fake, or there's just something wrong with it. For the life of me I couldn't get the shifting dialed in with it. I even took it to my local bike shop and they couldn't get the shifting dialed in. I switched to an SLX rear mech and it shifts perfectly. The SLX rear mech was also purchased on eBay but from a bike shop in California. So either the M5100 was fake or it was damaged in some way during shipping since it was shipped in a padded envelope mailer and just wrapped in bubble wrap inside the padded mailer.
I bought a Shimano shifter, pictured & described as a Shimano shifter... When it arrived it had "Shimooo" printed on it, but otherwise looked identical to the genuine one.
This video appearing in my home channel convinces me that TH-cam(Google) is listening to everything I say.... I have this same mech. Yesterday I literally straightened the cage and addressed the squeak in the jockey wheels (stripped down, bearings cleaned and re greased). Turned out I just needed to lube the chain.😂 Runs like new. Cost.... nothing. I also love a bit of Ali express ❤
Packaging and price are mostly because most of the AliExpress Shimano parts are bulk sales to bike manufacturers. When they have overstock, etc they sell off the excess.
Aliexpress Shimano products tend to be genuinie, eBay on the other hand, is a coin toss. BTW, usually only chains are usually fake because these are easy to manufacture, very hard for a company to fake a derailleur.
Yeah consumables (chains, brake pads, bearings, things like that) that are of simple design and therefore easy to manufacture are the worst pitfall of online shopping in general.
Been there, done that. Bought an SL-M315 that turned out to be fake. The clamp snapped while I was tightening the bolt just after having installed it onto the handlebar.
The only Shimano part that ive purchased that wasn't real is a chain so far. All other Shimano components from Aliexpress have been fine. I've gotten fake Shimano chains there and on eBay. I'm sticking to my local shop for chains now. Not worth the few dollars saved.
You never can (even when ordering from a local shop, who may also be getting stuff from AliExpress or Alibaba). That's why I did this video - I wanted to show what happens when you order from some random listing on AliX.
Im guessing some sort of theft somewhere, either direct from factory or from organised crime (easy to fence components overseas/online). Only legitimare way i can see it being real is from surplus stocks from bike manufacturers when they move to larest models for their latest bikes or bulk stock sales from bust bike shops.
There's like a gazillion flavours of Tourney in the wild. Tbf, given the quality, I don't even know I'd be able to tell a genuine one from a clone. Above that, I don't think it would be that easy to fake derailleurs, and I have never found a fake in the wild. Only that silly $$$ Ingrid rear mech has widespread fakery to be found, on AE and elsewhere.
Whats the point of faking the cheap low cost models, the genuine ones are usually just as cheap to buy from a store at those levels. Though usually im seeing alivo or tourney derailleurs with their branding/model sanded off advertised as deore slx or xt.
I have looked very closely, and the finish is identical... without the wear of the old one! Like I said in the video if it is fake, congratulations to whoever made it for a great product.

Also weighing them. Could be another possible fake identifier.

It is backwards. DEFINITELY fake.
This is supposed to be mounted on the left side of the bike. 😁
The entire video is backwards.

Not everything on AliExpress is fake

hey man, i watched your rep videos back in day. I got the SLX on my bike and its great.
I bought a Shimano shifter, pictured & described as a Shimano shifter... When it arrived it had "Shimooo" printed on it, but otherwise looked identical to the genuine one.
I bought a Deore 10 Spd shifter, chain, rear Der, cassette, front and rear deore hydraulics.... and it's absolutely all genuine.

Glad to hear you got your mech running like new again! It's always satisfying to fix something yourself.

Exactly correct , having spoken to Giant Taiwan and XDS .

I had no idea Shimano made Deore RDs that can be mounted on the left side of the bike! 😁
The last part of the video was recorded in front of a mirror .

I bought a RD-7000 from AliExpress. It works perfectly.
They’re official shimano, just Orem for builds. A lot cheaper to buy on Ali

Same
I think we should ask Shimano this question, also the weight will tell you the truth if its a copy or not
Only real if the part serial number comes from Kunshan or Tianjin as those are the only 2 manufacturers in China that makes Shimano components.
And if you did, so what?
That's kind of the point - whether it's real or not it works well.
@@boybiskit Ok, that's right.
Interesting. But how can you tell before you buy whether its a fake? Thats the million dollar question.

Clearly fake. All the writing is mirror image/reversed...
🙂
you can blame operator error for that ;p
how can it be real if it's that cheap?
OEM part that was never meant to be sold retail. Same reason packaging was sans box
No local shop markup, and no retail box for resale.

Lower end rear derailleurs like Tourney, Acera and Alivio have fakes. Deore and higher tier RD don’t have fakes… yet.

Yeah, I figured that after I finished!
@@boybiskit you know that you can mirror flip a video in an editing software?
It's a fake. Take a closer look at the finish quality and the materials that were used. You may just weight them (without jockey wheels) and compare.

I doubt it. Bought full XT groupset there and it's the real deal. Just bought some Ultegra chainrings too. And they aren't fake.
