I was taught to measure in 3 places. Top, middle and bottom, add measurements together and divide by 3. That would be the length of the border. This consistently ensures a square quilt.

Someone told me “once upon a time” to measure opposite sides, and take the average length if they differ, to cut the border strip, keeping the quilt square? Wonder if I should still be doing it that way?

Question: for wider borders, 4-6", do you do a straight seam or diagonal? I've always done the straight as I figure the diagonal would be too long & too noticeable?
For mine I prefer the straight for borders and sashing as no fabric waste. But for bindings I’ll usually do diagonal seams since it is just that tiny bit less bulky so the binding lays smoother. Hope that helps when choosing which seam to use for long strips!
Pat - Late to the game, but I am loving the Will You Be My Neighbor quilt. The polka dot roofs are spectacular! I downloaded block 11 (with no problem) and did a search for the other blocks. However, the WYBMN page on your blog will not let me download any of the previous blocks or the fabric requirements and setting/layout. Did I miss out on some deadlines? I know I can't download future blocks until you show them in one of the videos, but it is the previous blocks that won't download. I would love to put this pattern in the queue to make a wall hanging for my credit union (I am on the board).

Hi Tula pink has a great video where she shows how to do a striped border or binding to match exactly. It is either on your tube or her Facebook page, don’t recall. But I assume u could also find other videos on that on TH-cam. Happy quilting.
Of one side is longer than the other, say 1/2 inch do you split the difference and 'stretch ' one side a quarter inch and 'ease ' the other side 1/4 inch? This is my problem with a king size quilt I'm making. Thanks! Love your show!
it one size is 1/2" longer then the other i look to see where the sewing is off. there is a problem further in the quilt with seam allowances, better to fix it.
