This little Gator hit a tree and broke lots of plastic body panels. Replacement panel sets run around 600 dollars, so to save a buck I am going to repair them with a few simple tools.
AWESOME VIDEO! I have used your technique several times, I find having a helper align the odd shaped plastic is best because clamping is not always possible. I also found using a 1 1/4” wide putty knife with a riveted wood handle to be better than a screwdriver because you can heat the knife to get into tight places and use the blade to melt the wire mesh into the plastic and / or use the putty knife as a heat shield to protect fragile pieces near your repair or you can hold it in front of the heat gun to direct airflow to tight spots. Glad I stumbled onto this old vid. I was just given a John Deere tractor that has a huge crack along the middle of the hood and also on a couple bolt locations. I have tried epoxy, super glued strips of plastic, and still nothing has been strong enough or last long to hold. This is a simple idea I see working very well. Will be trying this out to save me $100 on a new hood from the dealer. Thanks for posting this even if its been 3 yrs ago.

IF you get some ABS plastic ( I Beam coat hanger in you closet) cut it into pieces and put in a cup of Acetone overnight. By morning the plastic will be like puddy and the acetone just sitting on top of it. I did this with dry wall mesh tape on a motorcycle faring. worked great . also used to patch holes. That being said I do like this how to vid. Will add to my toolbox in my head.

Do you think it would be easier to piece all the small pieces back together first and then put the larger repair back into the larger hole? I would like to see a close up photo of the front side.
I have a Kobota tractor BX24 and a John Deere X320 mower, both have plastic hoods. Will this method work on that type of plastic? Currently I have 2 cracks on my Kobota hood and I need to do something before I continue working on my yard projects, to protect it from further cracking.

I also did it on my xmr with a 3 foot crack in it. It doesnt look very good because I didnt want to take the rad hoses off to get the front plastics off but wow its strong.. thank you so much for posting this video what an awesome trick

@@stevee7774 It did work and held up for awhile. I eventually found a fiberglass repair kit from Walmart that has worked better.

Now that sounds like another good idea! You could probably layer them up to get the thickness closer to what you want as well.

Hardware cloth will bind into the plastic better than hose clamps.

Have you ever considered using fibreglass to repair ATV parts? The finer glass sheets and resin. Wondering if it would hold.

I don't remember, But it's not that important the mesh is much stronger than the plastic.

Fiberglass will not bond to HTPE
Is that ABS? If it is you could use a 3d printing pen to lay some ABS in the areas that have missing plastic, ABS sands out nicely.

The gun I use is 1200 watts and it works well.
Can I use a propane torch instead of a heat gun?
I found it a lot harder to control the temperature with a torch. With a heat gun I never scorched the plastic, this was not true with a torch.
why couldn't u repair it on the back side and where do u get hardware cloth I never heard of it
