  • There wasn't a good quality version of one of the most touching scenes in TV history on youtube, so I thought I'd try to upload a better version.
All rights belong to Warner Brothers and NBC.
Since everyone's asking, this is from Season 4 Episode 24 "Papa's got a brand new excuse"

I've read that during the first taping of the scene, Will was stumbling over words, so the director called 'cut' so the last line wouldn't get spoiled. James Avery then pulled Will to give him a pep talk about how to act in this scene, advising to look into his eyes as he's talking to Phil. Then, when Phil and Will are hugging, Avery whispered into Will's ear "That's fucking acting, right there." God bless James Avery for being a great mentor.

There nothing I can say that will justify what you've been through but I AM sincerely sorry for you, I have seen it first-hand with my step-kid's dad. He only visited them when it benefited him. He'd also take the other kids he had with the bitch he cheated on my wife years before meeting me to kings island etc. and my step-kids would see the pictures on Facebook and cry because they knew there dad don't care for them. He also passed a month ago, but the kids wasn't to sad about given he didn't want to see them barely.

The story goes when Avery came in to audition for the part Will was sitting slouched and with his feet up (basically how he is in the early seasons of the show) and Avery told him to sit up straight and put his feet down. Will and the producers of the show immediately knew Avery was the man for the part and he didn't disappoint.

Yes, Will was coping with the ol I don't care routine and swallowing raw emotions down. That becomes toxic for our mental health, it will fester and eventually come out worse. If we need to cry, to hug, just let it all out, we should, it doesn't make us less of a man.

James Avery’s performance in this scene is so impressive. You can see him really reacting to the text, believing in and being pushed forward by the imaginary circumstance, while still delivering his lines in an entertaining and mesmerizing way. RIP to an all time, incredibly underrated actor.

While this scene showed the range of Will Smith as an actor, showing that he would go on to be one of the greatest and most talented actors of his generation (I will always believe that), the parts that really hit me in this scene are the non-verbal work of James Avery. I can never get through this scene without tearing up. The ferociousness of that hug at the end... I really don't know if any other scene in the history of anything packs this emotional gut punch. The only thing that comes close that I can think of is the chicken story in M*A*S*H. Comedies seem to do the best job with tragic pathos, quite possibly due to the contrast, but also because of comedy and tragedy being two sides of the same coin.

3:38 That look on Uncle Phil's face. That's the look of someone who hates seeing someone he loves in pain. Not physical pain, emotional pain. And he doesn't know what to do or say. But then, Will says it...
"How come he don't want me, man?"
Uncle Phil then knew what he needed to do. He pulled in Will for a hug, reassuring Will there was someone who did want him and cared for him. And Uncle Phil was never gonna leave him.

It's always been Uncle Phil. He was a role model to me. And I'm sure he's a role model to many others. This hit me hard. I didn't know my biological father. This video brought the flood of emotion back. And I just turned 67. My step son is autistic, and his biological father never laid eyes on him either. His biological father was a preacher. Mine was in and out of prison and with a different woman when he was released. I never ran out on my step son, or his mom. I stayed the course. But, truth be told, there is some pain, such as the rejection by parents, that just won't heal. This was a short but very strong video.

I'm 54 years old my mother kidnapped me from my father. When I finally met him he was an angry bitter old man. My mother a narcissistic control freak. I was a prize to be won between the two of them. I swore to God I'd be more for my kids. I was diagnosed a little over 2 years ago with stage 4 cancer. My son told me superman don't get sick. My 2 daughters both said basically the baddest sob they know doesn't quit fighting. My granddaughter just always tells me she loves me.
