  • The 1917 Russian Revolution changed the course of the 20th century. At its head stood Vladimir Lenin, a man who used terror and mass murder to realize his Marxist vision of a utopian society. How did he and a small band of communists overthrow an empire and create the first totalitarian state? Paul Kengor explains.

Felix brought to mind F-ouch-i: "soul-less bureaucrat."
US politics: Lenin "carried out mass arrests, held show trials." January 6.
"Whole villages were massacred" (extra-ordinary fires: Paradise, CA; Lahaina, HI; the LA areas in CA).

Marx and Engels expected England to produce a spontaneous uprising of the workers, because it was the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution which should have, according to their theory, caused alienation of the proletariat and Revolution. When that didn't happen (the English didn't get the memo!) the Communist project was stymied.
Until Lenin decided the "workers" needed a Vanguard of the Proletariat to push them to do what they "ought" to do spontaneously. That vanguard would be the Bolshevik (Communist) intellectuals led by Lenin himself.
Driven by plain old anti Tsarist hatred, Lenin chose Russia for the revolution even though it was almost entirely peasant/farming stock and its proletariat - which was meant to drive the revolution - was minuscule. This was a deviation from Marxist theory (which itself had already failed to work) later called Marxism-Leninism.
Lenin used the Great War to push his rebellion/Revolution. Hidden from the Tsar by Germany he was then cleverly unleashed on Germany's Russian foe to cause mutiny in the ranks and end Russia's participation in the War. This he achieved; the Tsar and the Royal Family were murdered, leaving a power vacuum at the very top. Lenin would fill the gap.
Because Lenin's rebellion/Revolution was not spontaneous he had to use coercion from the start. This practice continued under Stalin who had the uncomfortable job of running 'Socialism in One Country" in another deviation from Marxist theory, which is Internationalist or it's nothing.. ("Workers of the world.." etc etc). He got around that by trying to "export socialism" country by country with varying success.
Since the defeat of Soviet Russia we see a further deviation from Marxist theory, this time from economic revolution to cultural revolution (Progressivism or 'Woke"). A different method with the same objective: the enforcement of Global Commununism.
    And so it goes on.

greatly undermined, yet a form of primeval common ownership of land, pass directly to the
higher form of Communist common ownership? Or, on the contrary, must it first pass through the

When Lenin's friends sent him a telegram to inform him that the revolution he was hoping for was beginning in Russia, Lenin responded that it would be in Germany, not Russia. His friends told him that it was beginning in Russia, with or without him. So Lenin left his attempts in Germany, and took to lead the revolution already started in Russia.

The dictatorial/totalitarian traits that we would associate with the Soviet Union were already in place in Russia during the time of the tsars. These included a single autocratic dictatorship, press censorship, persecution of political dissenters, secret police, and even early versions of the gulags. So all Lenin and the bolsheviks did was build on something that was already there, and thus they didn't build a dicatorship, but inherited one.
Futhermore most countries were communists took over were previous dictatorships, so they went from being one type of dictatorship to another. The only exception if I'm not mistaken was Czechoslovakia, although here the communists didn't take power after a democratic election, but through a coup.

Vietnam, a communist state is the fastest growing Asian economy. Cuba, despite being the most trade restricted nation on earth, has a life expectancy higher than most US states, and so many doctors that they export them. And these are just communist states. If we expand more broadly to democratic socialism, nations like Spain have the Spanish Socialist Workers Party as the dominant political party. In Portugal it's a coalition of their socialist and communist parties. The most successful state in India, Goa, is run by a democratically elected Communist political party. If you want to blame someone for causing the October revolution, it would be the provisional Russian government led by Alexander Kerensky who took over after the Tsar abdicated in March 1917. Kerensky planned to tansform Russian into a modern western-style democracy, and allow the Tsar to go into exile, but unfoutunatly he made one big mistake which cost him his popularity and ultimatly his government: he wanted to continue with Russian's role in WWI. This did not sit well with the populace who had hoped that the Tsars removal would mean an end to the conflict, and the failed offensives against the Germans made things worse. If Kerensky had done what the people wanted, there would be no need for the October Revolution.
Futhermore a Red victory wasn't a guarantee. When the Russian civil war began the white army were doing better, and by 1919 the Reds were constantly on the deffensive with defeat seeming to be around every corner. Unfortunatly the divission from within the White army caused a lot of friction which the Reds would exploit, and eventually gain the upper hand. That's because the White Army wasn't a single movement, but a collection of various anti-bolsheviek groups, such as Tsarists, Militarists, Republicans, Conservatives, Liberals, anti-Bolsheviek Leftists. The only thing these groups had in common was that they were anti-Bolsheviek. Unlike the Bolshevieks and the various seperatists movements throughout Russia, the White Army didn't have a clear vision on what they wanted for Russia after winning.

No, what your comment proves is that you either know nothing about Lenin or that you just don't care about other people. Every time I look up Lenin online, all I ever find is more examples of mass slaughter, famine with resulting cannibalism, and indescribable torture methods used by his agents-some of which reportedly included slowly feeding people into furnaces, throwing others into freezing rivers during the winter, using rats to chew into prisoners stomachs, and plunging victims hands into boiling water and peeling the damaged flesh off.
His palty Soviet Union was a failure and embarrassment to history from the start. No wonder it couldn't even last for three quarters of a single century.
Its offspring North Korea may last longer than that, but that has far more to do with the Kim dynasty's skill at sealing away the country from the rest of the world than anything resembling actual decent living conditions.
Now of course, we both know that you almost certainly won't research any of this because doing so would shatter the myth of Lenin being anything remotely like a decent leader. This post is for the benefit of those who are open-minded and brave enough to research Lenin's legacy online and see the true extent of the horrors he unleashed on Russia and its surrounding colonies.

Oh, that's because that is historically *very true*, all dictators *really are* left-wing extremists; the right does not produce dictators at all, in fact, via the defense of ownership of firearms and criticizing the administration: it *prevents* dictators, not cultivates them!
No sane dictator job applicant can tolerate freedoms like those the right defends found in the USA Constitution, nor allow adherence thereto- in truth, they won't get the job, or will be overthrown on day *one* of their rule, yet the *left-wing* regularly does produce such tyrants, and fickle ones too!

what Lenin had was a vision of equality, he openly criticized on the racism in the united states, and the inequality between men and women. he inspired multiple other revolutionists, like Che Guevara, Fidel Castro and one of the greatest African leaders, Thomas Sankara I never lived in a communist country but I have experienced how democracy has failed for multiple people

@markfoster6300 you wouldn't know history if it hit you square in the balls. Lenin introduced capitalism in 1921 as per Marxist theory, in order to achieve communism, you have to have been a socialist society, but before that you have to been capitalist state. Lenin and the other bolhesviks knew that Russia was a semi feudal state and to become socialist, Russia needed to experience limited capitalism. Which is what the New Economic Policy (NEP) was. The nep gave peasants land, owned for surplus to sold on the market for profit, state ownership of key industry while medium to smaller buinesses were allowed to be private, and allowed for foriegn investment in the oil feilds.the NEP was meant to be temporary so Russias economy could stabilize after the civil war and for Russia to have an easier time to transition to socialism (the nep was introduced in 1921 and the frist 5 year plan was 1929, so 8 years of a mixed economy). I'm sorry but conservatives have no right to cry about history if all they do is participate in historical revisionism

    • @deadchannelxd0420

@markfoster6300 history shows that Lenin introduced regulated capitalism to Russia in 1921 so in order to stabilize its economy along with believing Russia wasn't ready for socilaist state yet. He believed, just like marx, that society go from feudalism to capitalism then to socialism then they can achieve communism.
