  • This is a video showing how I covered our existing entryway siding with cedar planks to update the look of our home. We used 1x4 cedar boards and finished them with a natural stain. All the materials were found at our local lumber yard.

    My girlfriend and I are replacing some vinyl siding with cedar, on our stone house. We want to change the trim from brown to black as well. Your video is basically what we discussed doing. Thanks for the example, and the aluminum angle idea!

    Very nice work as usual. We did something somewhat similar. Our two story house is an olive green color, but we ripped off the siding on one of the front sections of our house (where the front door is) and went with beveled cedar, which we stained a slightly darker brown. It really pops, just the way yours does. It's funny because people use accent walls all the time on the interior of the house, but you don't see much of it on the exterior. I guess great minds think alike :)

      Rob Bosch, very true lol! I bet the cedar looks really good with your green color too! I can’t take much credit for the idea itself, that goes to my wife. I just make them happen ;) I do really like it, it makes a big difference for sure!

    • @PottersWork
      @PottersWork  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, and thanks! I chose cedar for this reason, as it doesn’t expand and contract much. I also installed while it was warmer so that it should have been expanded about as much as it was going to. So far over the last year, we’ve had temps up to 108° and this winter we got down to -20° and so far it looks the same as it did when I installed it. If you live in a very humid climate, you might want to space them some though.

    • @PottersWork
      @PottersWork  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks! It's holding up really well! Still looks like it did when I put it up. The cedar is probably going to need to be re-stained in a year or two I'm guessing, the sun shines right on it in the morning and is starting to weather it a little.

      No, just convenience on my part. I also wanted to be able to replace them easily later if I needed to. Blind nails would be cleaner for sure, but I don’t even notice the screws.

    • @PottersWork
      @PottersWork  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Angelita, if it's flat, I don't see a problem with it...I did that as well. That was just aluminum siding I attached ours to in the video. I figure it's an extra layer of protection since the cedar is not lapped or tongue and groove to prevent water from getting behind it. Thank you!

    • @PottersWork
      @PottersWork  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dara, thank you! Honestly right now, as far as real wood goes, I am not sure that there is a cheaper alternative for an exterior project. Building materials are much higher than normal since Covid. There are cheaper woods, but they usually aren’t great for outdoors without more maintenance.

      Michael, I used time head wood screws for the install, I did not pre-drill the holes since the screws I bought have a self cutting tip. I show the screws I used at 6:20 in the video if you want to put eyes on them :) Thanks!

    The wood penetrating finish you used, is it gloss or satin?

    • @PottersWork

      I don’t have the can any longer, but I know it wasn’t a gloss finish. It just darkened the wood a little, other than that it still looks natural. Hope that helps!

    What did you use on the edges where it meets the ceiling? Silicone? Caulking?

    • @PottersWork
      @PottersWork  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      NebuR, I didn't use any sealant around the outside edges or the top since I went right over the weather tight aluminum siding that was already in place. I did however silicone caulk around all the black window trim where it meets the vinyl window so moisture wouldn't get in there. If I was going to do this as the actual siding, I would router a lap into the cedar to keep water from getting behind it at all the seems...Then caulk around the edges as well.
