Absolutely love this song!! I've been lucky to see it live a number of times since Bruce loves to pull this gem out in Philly!

I don't know if you noticed, but the best about this recorded performance is that it's the original E Street Band. That is with Vini "Mad Dog" Lopez on drums and David Sancious on piano (not in any of the shots that I noticed). Lopez is said to have been fired in 74 after a physical fight with the band managers brother. He had the nickname "Mad Dog" for a reason. He had played with Bruce since 1964. For the Tracks release of this song in 98, Bruce called in Lopez to redo some of his background vocals.

David wasn't there for this performance. Bruce plays piano on another song. It's just Bruce, Danny, Garry, Clarence and Vini. And look how new his guitar is here!

"Casserole" is a great description of this. He pulled this out of the closet in 2002 after it was dormant for 28 years and the hardcore loved it. Since then it's been played sporadically, about 31 times since the 2002 Christmas shows.

Bruce and some of the other band members were quite well known for participating in hours long jam sessions at a club called the Upstage in Asbury Park NJ.

“My heart’s wood, she’s a carpenter!” Good call, David, in describing Thundercrack as literally a “mish mosh!” It does have a little of everything! Back in the day, Thundercrack was the show stopper at the end of the show for the band. Wish this version actually contained the complete song. Love the early days of “swing” Bruce with Vini “Mad Dog” Lopez on drums!

Thanks @THEDavidHeretic it's pretty cool to have the footage of a pretty much unknown young 23-year-old kid starting out in the music business, hopefully, he makes it....

This is early in his career. There's only 1 band member there that's still with him. This never made an album until 1999s tracks which was mostly out takes. I think early on Bruce had so much music in his head and he was trying to get it all out in 1 song.

First Bruce Springsteen "era" without Max Weiberg on the drums bit with Vinni Lopez. Honestly I always loved this Springsteen's song, and Van Morrison's influence is so interesting. It's a pity that this song is been hidden until 1998. This song was published on "Tracks" collection.

Thundercrack is a song in the fun and quirky early songs category. I don't think you will get any pitchforks for this review. Written in '72 and used as a showstopper in 73-74 and not much played since. Didn't see an official release until Tracks in 1998 (the compilation of mostly unreleased songs). I just looked it up and it was literally 27 years of no play after 74 until 2001.

There’s a reason this didn’t make it to the first album and wasn’t released until the outtakes collection Tracks. I was expecting a 2 star rating.

As a die hard Bruce fan I can easily agree that I don’t love every single song the man has written, I’ll even go as far as to say that with the Letter to You album he released in 2020, his albums since The Rising which was released in 2002, I can only pick 1 maybe 2 songs off that album I’d go out of my way to listen to. Hearing you talk about the Jungleland reaction here is giving me more chills just waiting to see the video drop it’s my all time 2nd favorite Springsteen song behind Thunder Road. Another phenomenal review as always!

The song is good, but it is incomplete in that video. In any case, we want more reactions from you about Bruce

An average score - honest reaction
50 years ago, and as another poster mentioned about 2 years before the mighty E Street Band that would be fine tuning their act up to that 1999 performance and beyond really came together - still fun to see the early stage development. Was his first album just released or pending release at this point?
Yes I am a Springsteen fanatic - and this one falls
Onto my " mood " playlist
As in- if I'm not in the fight mood - i might just skip over it
Now to listen to Jungleland and wait - so glad you enjoyed that one

I could be completely wrong but I seem to remember Bruce wrote this back in the early days to try and keep the crowd’s attention and involved in the show.

I'm big Springsteen fan. Nothing wrong with this or any other reaction you've done for his music,
.For me this song is just a rehearsal for what was to come. Carry on, rock on and I'll keep listening.

Written as a concert piece around the time of Wild & Innocent album. Kity's Back and Rosalita were better so this stayed unrecored for years. It was always a huge fan favorite in Philly. Bruce's friends, Beaver Brown actually played the best version I ever heard live during their marathon sets in the 70's...

My biggest issue with this version is the solo section has alot more repetition than other versions that mix it up and make the song not feel like its 10 minutes long

(An issue with early ESB is that they could sometimes end up overjamming, from 1972 to 1975 the band could be summarized as a rock and roll band that had a baby with a soul and jazz band)

Huge Springsteen fan and not only do I not LOVE all of his songs, there are some that I don’t even LIKE. Not a huge fan of Thundercrack, and there’s a reason it was never released until Tracks. I’ve seen better versions but still, not great. Did you notice that it was the original band? No Max - Mad Dog Vinnie Lopez on drums for the first two albums (and many of Bruce’s bands prior to getting a record deal) and David Sancious on piano. No Stevie Van Zandt (the record company didn’t want a second guitarist). Just before the Born To Run album, Bruce fired Mad Dog and Sancious left to do his own thing. Stevie quit music for awhile and was working construction then started touring with oldies bands.
I have never had the impression you hate Springsteen and his music. People saying that are just friggin’ nuts.

There's a few songs I don't care for. This isn't one of them but in all fairness it's not one of his greatest. I think in fairness you've got to consider that this was probably a club performance during the era of progressive rock.

With all due respect, this is not a song I will want to hear again. An honest opinion.
