One of my favourite outtakes from Bruce. As others have said on here, its insane he left songs off his albums of this quality, and left them to gather dust for decades. Good pick from JFK. I would've had an essay to write about everything to do with this performance, so thankfully other people covered those points before I did 😆 fun bit of trivia: I believe Bryan Adams was hanging around the Power Station when Bruce was recording The River album and this song, and it inspired the riff for Summer of 69. If you play that and the studio version of Take Em As They Come from Tracks back to back, you will hear a lot of similarity! Another great, in depth review Dave. Cheers!

Dave I remember seeing him 6 straight nights at the Spectrum in Philly when he played 6 nights in like 8 days! $22 a ticket 1981!

How much music they have in their heads to remember the song in short time...fantastic band, great score!!!
And the people ...travel three countries to hear the song in a live show ..wow!!!

Can you believe an artist would leave a song like Take ‘Em As They Come on the cutting room floor and leave it unreleased for almost 30 years until a retrospective box set? Many artists would have had highly successful careers with just the songs Springsteen cut from his albums. Amazing. Thanks, David, for a great review.

I believe Bruce's sign requests are legit, having experienced a bunch, BUT in this instance I wouldn't put it past Bruce to say "if that dude shows up with the sign AGAIN we're going to do it. Give it a listen it just in case". And yes, the E Street Band is talented enough to do it. Max, Stevie, Roy and Gary were on the original recording. Oh, and six shows isn't extreme for some of these crazy Springsteen fans.
So glad you got to experience a Springsteen show.

I had a sign of the Bruce song "One way street" in Germany 2013. The E-street Band hasn't played this song in any show before or after. But this very night he saw my sign and he played it!! And that was 100% not planned at all!!!!
And yes, 6 shows aren't that much. I've been to seven shows last year and to five this year.

I carried the sign for one way street with me from the start of the 2013 European series.. shiw before MonchenGl he saw my sign and said .. wow.. and then played it at the one show I skipped..
here's my son's version (16 at time of recording) and the sign efforts I put in....
Good choice for a request - I couldnt agree more

True, it was never played with the ESB before and after Mönchengladbach, but Bruce played it solo during the Light Of Day festival in 2011: th-cam.com/video/NHmJIGSEOPU/w-d-xo.html

The past couple of Australian tours I saw 7 shows each time. Three different states, four different venues. This time I will probably add another state and city. I have also seen him twice in LA and once in NY. I had planned to see him in NJ at three shows but had to cancel last minute. We Springsteen fans plan holidays and schedules around tour announcements. Yes we are that passionate (or nuts).
I have made a couple of signs and got close to having one played. My wishlist is long and maybe too obscure to be picked. One of my friend's sign was pulled and she got it. A rarity so made our nights.

Classic Heretic: "not a lot to talk about, folks.... we'll make this a short review." .... and then 10 minutes of review. Love it! Great review, really enjoyed this one. What a fun experience.

I've been going to shows since the sign stuff started in 2008 or so. You will literally see people go through security with the signs. The sign is completely legit and what he said is NOT a joke! The European fans are next level. They will literally follow the European tour to every single show. I wish i was kidding lol. The fan base in Europe is actually MUCH bigger than in the US. Some of the Euro fan groups will actually come to shows in the US as well, and he will shout them out on occasion. And yes, some of them mange to be in the "pit" all the time and will bring the same sign until he recognizes it.
Also - Jimmy Eat World has a studio cover of this song. It's quite good. Check it out!

So I think there is a reason Bruce is able to pull it off; according to his band members he gives them a list of over 200 songs to learn before they go on tour. When Tom Morello joined the band he had 2 months to get ready and Bruce gave him a list of 70 songs to know for the first show. After the first show he texted him 7 more to learn by next show and so on. In addition he started this in 2008. I guess they needed a new challenge after 35 years of touring. There are also many videos of Bruce going thru the chord progression with band prior as well as examples of them botching it. The ultimate example would be him taking a request for Living Proof in Milwaukee 2009. Band has no clue how to play it and they need a restart and him signaling chord changes. You might find it unprofessional perhaps as, but it was super cool to see how things operate. JFK; request that video!

It's obscure ~ “Take ’em as They Come” would have been a radio smash had it been released on The River in late 1980. But it wasn’t to be-“Take ’em” spent almost two decades in the vault before Bruce finally released it on his Tracks compilation in 1998.it’s not the easygoing refrain it appears to be. It’s a battle cry-a declaration of intent to hold one’s ground, defend the one you love from any threat, and take them down before they take you. "Last night I dreamed we was running through the outlands
Tears streaming, your pretty face all a wreck
I held your daddy’s gun in my trembling hands
And down the highway another stranger comes
You gotta take ’em baby when they come"

There are no "plants" / VIP seating, etc. at Springsteen concerts. Same thing with people he brings up on stage. He does use a teleprompter for lyrics. Of course when you play over 220 different songs on one tour, you have to.

If you want Bruce to pick up your sign you have to get his attention, either with the container or with the content. I was in a show and he took a real banner (Steve had to help him to extend it). It was something like "ain't got balls-great balls of fire". And of course they played it nice.

As far as I know, on the rare occasion that U2 does sign requests, those are real as well. My friends and I made a sign for their song "Party Girl" and brought it to a bunch of shows, until they finally played it. They also brought up one of my friends to play guitar for that song as well. The people Bono brings up on stage aren't plants either. But a lot of them are known to the band and their crew because they've been seen at multiple shows, usually in the front. I also made a small sign for Edge that said "Edge Dance For Us" and he did so during Mysterious Ways. So some bands are absolutely cool with signs and things.

You should react to "Loose Ends" by Bruce. It is also a River outtake...

Bruce uses a telaprompter for lyrics. There is guy under the stage the sends to it. Bruce said it in one of his interviews. Not sure how the rest of the band knows the song

    Even as a Bruce fan - i figure high 6's low 7's
    1-2-3-4 ba da boom ...
Are they "plants" - i feel strongly no
    Are they purely spontaneous?
    Well....
Bruce and the people he works with are true pros- they prepare and sound check like its their first gig- even though they've been bandmates for up to 50 years in some cases
Many of his fans go to many shows - Bruce also is known to play a couple songs solo to the eager fans there early - so he likely sees a sign and thinks - hmmm maybe - let's be ready for that
Also - as you've noticed and remarked in past reviews that his songs have predictable chordal progression- makes it easier to play without much practice
Good review and thanks JFK for finding this one
