Kind of random, but food for thought : when you look at artists’ conceptions on “the belt” i.e. the asteroid belt, it always looks like a shovel full of gravel, where the asteroids are almost touching each other. In reality, the average distance between asteroids within the belt is 600,000 miles, which is a little more than twice the distance between the earth and the moon.

    "Does Miller take bribes?"
He literally took a bribe in the first episode to not inspect the air filters, which led to them failing, which led to a bunch of sick people, which led to him throwing the guy in the air lock.

The OPA is "loosely" made up of 100s of belter factions/tribes [in the books, it's described as 1000s, but they reduced the number for the show]. It was essentially formed as a union to get better worker rights for its members, but has started to move into the political arena. Not all belters belong to the OPA and, not all tribes/factions agree on policies. Some are quite radical, and may be thought of a terrorists; others are quite peaceful. BTW, the different belter creole accents are reflective of the different tribes of belters.
Anderson Station was a "Station", not a ship. The civilians got on it because they lived and worked there.
Lopez died due to the high-g's the ship pulled during it's escape from the Donager's blast. He knew it was going to kill him, which is why he said. "it would have been nice to see an ocean on Mars." Also the ship is (or was)the M.C.R.N Tachi. not MORN Tachi. MCRN = Mars Congressional Republic Navy.
And I do like your comments. but be careful. Every line of dialog is important. If you're talking while a character is talking, you're missing some important details. I think this is where you're picking up some confusion. However, how you react is your choice, and I"m not complaining. 😀

      @irishlatinoreacts1842  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Thanks for the comment! Yes it is hard to strike that balance of watching the show and reacting. Getting this stuff on TH-cam requires me to make the video more about my reaction and less about the show itself, and I obviously cannot predict when the next piece of dialogue is going to commence. So it is inevitable that I will talk over certain key points. But I am glad that I have all of you guys here to point out what I missed!

The focus of coffee in the series is two-fold. First, it is a luxury product because of the conditions needed to produce it. Second, the writers of the books (and the television series) treat coffee as special in their lives. In an interview, Steven Strait said that Holden's character arc through the first half of the first season is a man searching for a good cup of coffee.

The name Rocinante is the horse ridden by the main character in the story that also includes Dulcinea. Some more clues coming in later episodes; I believe the reason The Expanse was written with these references is to give an insight into Holden's personality and how, at least at this point in the story, has some similarities to the main character in the other story.
It's not a big spoiler to know what this means, and if you don't get the references because you don't know the story they are from then it wouldn't matter.
There are references to so many other books and movies embedded in The Expanse, and there's a whole series of TH-cam videos by the authors and cast of the TV series going into great depth about all of the influences. Unfortunately those videos are not spoiler free so probably best not to watch any of them yet, and because many of them are over an hour long and more than one per episode of the series you need to be a very dedicated fan to watch all of them (I think I've only watched the ones from about season 5 on when they started uploading them after each episode) then they went back and started again back from the first season and I watched most of those and then stopped; I will go back one day and watch The Expanse again and all of the extra stuff, at least that's what I keep telling myself.

Appreciate (& agree) with your comments concerning religion / religious characters in the show. It’s not a major focus, but it is refreshing to see religious persons existing in the shows universe- and another +, they’re not portrayed with the usual stereotypes.

Radio communication has three forms in The Expanse. Broadcast can be picked up by every ship, station, and planet with an antenna array. Tight-beam is a point-to-point encoded transmission that no one can intercept unless they are in the path of the transmission. Or Wide-beam, which is not Broadcast but is sent into a zone of space that a ship will be moving through, so hopefully, the ship and the transmission will intercept each other.

As someone of Latin heritage it is reasonable for you to try and learn something about "Don Quixote De La Mancha" by Miguel de Cervantes, considered among the very finest of Spanish language literature ever, and even in worldwide literature. Dulcinea, Rocinante, Holden's constant tilting at windmills; all strong references from that book. As you'll soon learn, he got a very early introduction to the story and archetypes, and it is inherent in his character over all 6 years of the show.

A creole language is one that essentially evolves from a simplified form of a bunch of other langauges, *and* are acquired by children as a native language (which diustinguishes creole from pidgin). There are a ton of creole languages currently spoken on Earth, many of them based on French, English, Spanish, Dutch and Portugese which arose as a result of colonialism. Security captain Shadid was wary of going after OPA members in the immediate wake of the water crisis riots. Trying not to aggravate the situation further. I'm not sure if there was a line in there saying that it was an order from above, from the Ceres governor or not. Julie Mao's hamster was clearly some kind of toy / robot "pet" as it wasn't caged. Also when Miller first saw it it was static. Later it was running in the wheel and its eyes were lit up like red LEDs. I think you missed Amos rubbishing Alex's suggestion of going to a Martian port because they are in essentially a stolen Martian ship with a dead martian "in the trunk", and Holden had said there was nobody left alive who would believe their story. Lopez was bleeding heavily and then had to undergo high G flight. You guessed about Fred being the Butcher pretty damn quick though - bravo!

So a wide beam transmission is broadcast to all of space. Everyone can read it. If it's intended for a specific target, it could be encrypted, so only a specific target can read it, assuming they know how to decrypt it. But wide beam broadcasts are far less secure than tight beam transmissions. A wide beam broadcast is how Holden told the entire solar system that Mars killed the Cant.
Tightbeams are how ships communicate when they want their communications to be private. It's based on a comm laser directed at a specific target. But you have to know where your target is. And where it's going. Tightbeams are pretty useless unless you are, at most, a few light-seconds away from your target, or they're on an incredibly straight and regular course where you can shoot the tightbeam directly at where they will be in some amount of time.
Just remember, space is FUCKING HUGE, and even light takes time to cross it. It takes the light from our sun 8 minutes to reach the Earth, and that's a pretty tiny distance in the grand scale of the universe.
    Also, Welcome to the Rocinante!!

  • @Sinewmire

The intro does indeed come back. In future seasons it'll occasionally update itself to reflect events, so keep an eye out!
Holden was in the Earth navy: He's born in Montana, and the Mars military only accepts true red Martians with dust in their blood!
"Miller's not impressed" nah, Miller calls the OPA 'victims' and does his best to distance himself from the other Belters, even wears Earther clothes and hat. He wants to convince them - and him - that he's not a weak pathetic oppressed Belter, like they are.
"The first mouse we saw in Julie's room did not look electronic" it was completely stationary on it's wheel. It was either electronic or stuffed!
Anderson Dawes acts a lot like a mob boss. Everyone knows who he is and he'll talk about it freely, but nobody dares to make a move on him. He seems confident enough to walk around without visible bodyguards, though.
I love the little montage of the boys making themselves at home: Naomi's clearly not as comfortable as them on the ship, though.
Miller is a classic noir detective in the mold of Philip Marlowe. He's grubby but not dirty, a little crooked but not bent. He's a hard drinker, and he gets too attached to the crimes, and not attached enough to those around him. That's the other reason, he's got the hat, of course.

A couple of things: “Tachi” is pronounced “TAH-chee.” It’s the Japanese word for sword.
At 17:24, Filat Kothari says, (referring to shooting Havelock with the mining spike) “My going away present. Onto bigger and better things.” Recall a few episodes ago, when Miller catches Diogo stealing water. Miller tells Diogo that he should worry about the gangs more than he should worry about the cops, and Diogo replies that the gangs have all left. Gangs don’t just leave their turf for no reason. The OPA doesn't have immunity but Star Helix were told by the Governer of Ceres to leave their members alone (probably to avoid problems with them). So Captain Shadid was like: ok, Kothari is NOT OPA so fuck that bastard up all you like if you catch him!
btw: the spike used on Havelock DID go all the way through. Remember they pinned him to the wall with that. Depending on where exactly it went though, if it injured any vital organs and how quickly you get medical care, an injury like that CAN be survived if you're lucky (I wouldn't bet on it though).
As others have already said: Holden is from Earth and was a member of the UN Navy before being dishonorably discharged, Alex was part of the Martian Navy as a transport pilot. Naomi is a belter and Amos is a civilian from Earth. Tycho station does not belong to the UN. it's basically a company and the station is out in the belt, constructing the Nauvoo for the Mormons. As we learned in this episode, Fred Johnson used to be a Colonel in the UN Navy (and had command during the Anderson Station incident) but apparently he dropped out somewhere in between that and the current time of the show and became the director of operations at Tycho Station. Also he apparently is OPA nowadays, at least all the Rocinante's crew members know him to be "some kind of bigshot in the OPA" even though he's from Earth.

    • @MattNolanCustom

Not really particularly relevant, but all corporations have to have a legal base somewhere, and the Tycho Corporation is based on Earth. It's not UN, but we can't really say that it is "the Belt" (not that you did), even though that's where Tycho station is presently.

IF we like your style? I like your style. Easy to tell it's going to be a fun going along with your journey through The Expanse. Although I find myself feeling pained for the little guy sitting ever so patiently in the background wondering what the heck you're doing, doing nothing. Maybe a dog bone during Expanse episodes?
Any, I'm back to make my suggestion again to avoid comments that bring up The Expanse Books in relation to the show. Fight the urge. Just scroll past. I don't scroll past and I get triggered when people post spoilers in the comments. The worst happened to the Battlestar Galactica reactor Carmen Young. Someone got pissy in the comments in Season 3 and posted every major plot point and reveal for all of Season 4 in her comments. I'm sure no one here will do anything that bad. But it's frustrating that when people watched The Expanse on their first view, they had no idea what was going on. Coming up with wild theories. Missing the clues laying in plain sight. It was an organic part of enjoying the show for the first time. Then the same people come to reactor's channels and feel the need to spoon feed reactors things they themselves didn't know on firs viewing. Denying reactors the same enjoyment of finding where they missed clues. Finding out this theory or that theory was wrong.
So do yourself a big favor and let yourself be surprised organically watching the show. It's alright not to know what's coming and where. In fact, your mind will be soooooooooooooooooo blown by getting smacked in the face by the unexpected. And the best thing you can do in the moment is ignore any information about the books. At least until Season 4. By then the hand holders will be pretty much done wanting to hold your hand.
Another great reaction. Looking forward myself to making comments other than this one.

I gotta say it: You have to be a little more attentive my friend.
You have been in the earlier episodes, so I know you can. :)
Just 2 minutes before you say "Lopez has a vote", they were talking of "a dead Martian in the trunk" and said that everybody from the Cant and the Donnager was dead. He died during the high-G burn escaping the Donnager.
We've seen Miller take bribes in episode 1 from the guy he later thew into the airlock. Anderson Station is a station, as the name says, not a ship.
I think you talked a little too much over dialogue this time. You gonna miss stuff (we saw you did). Believe us, every line is there for a reason. And some of it will not be repeated.
The "mouse" is a hamster and the first we saw _did_ look electronic. It had its eyes turning from green to red while Miller was there, and went from kinda frozen to running in the wheel. Because it is the same. Miller went back to Julie's room after he saw the open hamster in the sherpa's chamber to take the thing apart, and he found a chip in it. It was from Julie's hamster, not from the shop.
Easter eggs in this episode: The Tech Noir is a reference to Terminator. If you've seen it you may know. Also, on the left of the Tech Noir plate of the shop, you can see "T-100", which is an early Terminator model.
The show is full of such tiny details, references and easter eggs. Beside all the little story related details. There are references to all kind of pop culture, like movies, series, books, games, bands, etc. hidden everywhere. There are references to Star Wars, Star Trek, Alien, Dr. Who, Firefly, Simpsons, Don Quixote, Pacific Rim, the rock band Rush, and many many more.
