I understand and appreciate the parts of the engine where they DID engineer strength, as seen with the cross bolts, so WHY WHY WHY cheap out on something like a plastic part for the thermostat? To me that's like putting freaking rocks in Usain Bolts shoes pre-race, it needlessly weakens an engine that would otherwise be "overbuilt" as we keep hearing. Cost cutting I know, BUT IMO to justify such "cost cutting" you better show that cut in the freaking PRICE!
We have one with 160k on it. It’s been a great executive limo suv in city. We actually had a few more issues with the GM Denali. Zero issues with the Navigator. So I’d say it’s smack in the middle reliability wise.
Actually the engine has proven itself on the jeep wagoneer for quite some time. It's very likely it's a good engine though. Now on a full size pickup that depends tbh. We'll have to see in the long run if it really holds up but I think it will. But I'd rather it still have a hemi tbh. Or both as an option.
I'm ok with the option of the 3.0 hurricane. But just that have it as an option. Both gm and Ford still give people the option for people to choose there v8 engine. I've always been a ram guy but I hate that they've taken away people's choice to chose that they want.
The hurricane is a great engine in concept, since most pickups are people haulers and do some occasional work. The hurricane has some issues because of stelantis building and using cheap part.

I’m seen videos of these engines having issues with thermostat and sensor for oil. No matter what Ram says they should have a dipstick. Also cheap plastic parts….
Rams have the 4th gen thermostat. The issue was with earlier gen thermostats and resolved with the Grand Wagoneers before they could ever make it to the Ram.

The 3.92 ratio is still beneficial for engine braking. If the turbochargers were of the VGT style that might be less of an issue. But differential gears are very helpful for speed control without overheating the brakes.
The one drawback, I see what the hurricane is all the plastic parts on the motor it needs to be metal for more reliability, same issue that plagues BMW's all the plastic.
Two things I like: Inline 6, closed deck. I don't like: separate air to water intercooler, plastic thermostat housing, only 3 liters, NO DIPSTICK? THAT IS A DEAL BREAKER! YOU CAN KEEP IT I DON'T CARE HOW MUCH POWER IT MAKES OR HOW FAST IT IS! (I heard it is pretty damn quick!)
In paper I love what I see, I just worrying about thermostat housing, waste gate control, and maybe head gasket, but I can't wait for the aftermarket availability of quality and performance parts for it.
The drawback I see, is the $10000 cost of replacing each turbo. I won't be able to afford that if I don't have the truck paid off. When the turbos fail it might be wiser and cheaper to put in a Hemi. Eventually there will be a swap kit. I would rather have a larger straight 6 with no turbos. I think used Hemi trucks will go up in demand. Dodge dealer was hoping I would trade in my 1500 Hemi for a Hurricane. Nope.
After 30 years as a dealer, I trade them in before the warranty runs out. Zero trust in todays crazy technology. Just bought a 25 Ram like your driving two months ago. Love it but it will be gone at 50k.

I like the forged I6 design with 7 main caps being secured with 42 bolts. The architecture is pretty stout. No big issues at all in my shop so far, and they've been out for over 2.5yrs now.
I love how they say you run on pump gas to get the maximum horsepower you'll have to run premium the turbos can be expensive to replace and no dipstick in the engine you don't know if you ever have a coolant leak and coolant gets in the oil then your engine is done for and there is way too much plastic on it to break

A dipstick isn't just for checking oil level. It's for checking oil quality. That's why they are replacing so many of these engine already. No one can catch a blown head gasket issue before a catastrophic overheating condition warps the block.

Seems like a whole bunch of guys are really worried about using more plastic parts on and in the major oiling and cooling components of the engine. They have been using plastic and composite parts on engine for decades. So the durability is a design spec, not the fact that the material is plastic. There are reasons plastic replaces metal in a number of what are considered critical performance areas. I myself for the most part do not worry too much about it. We pretty much by now know that the issues and failure points are a most new engines. If there are areas where using plastic in the parts is proving unreliable long term, and if the manufactures chose not to upgrade or replace those parts with better ones, that’s on them. And you reward them for those choices by not buying vehicles containing the undesirable parts. And it does happen. Like Ford lost a ton of sales when they were using those troublesome dual clutch automated manual automatic transmissions in their small cars.
Everything on the new motors is plastic and the hurricane takes it to a new level of stupidity It's because of the amount of plastic and heat turbos are producing, Plus I believe the block is iron and the head is aluminum and most of the time those turbos are going to be working. Pretty hard to get that engine to produce any amount of power and with the dissimilar metals it's going to torture the cylinder head gasket.
I'm remembering all the hate from Ford 5.4 3V guys slamming other guys for going 3.5 EB in 2011. The EB proved far more reliable, despite far more complexity. Yes, it had its issues, but nothing like the 3Vs multiple failure points.
It's an expensive truck. For that money they could have replaced a lot of those junk plastic parts with metal parts and made their customers much happier. I wish they offered a non-turbo version of this engine.
@@logantcooper6 I have a 2019 Ram 1500 with a Pentastar! It is a very nice truck. So you understand my humble needs, the truck is used for light hauling and rental repairs. The Hurricane would provide that nice perfect balance of a straight six and hopefully have the durability of the old Ford 300 straight six.
This would be insane in the Pacifica the 3.6 is more than plenty. I'm guessing there would be zero way it would ever fit in a front wheel drive engine bay anyway
I rented the 3.0 and drove it 6 months. First thing happened was the lipstick shut me down, parts not available until 2 months later so I got a 3019 5.7 to drive. When fixed. I drove it 3 months and the plastic thermostat stuck when towing a tool trailer and ruined engine. It had power, but was a gas hog. Ended up buying a 2019 work truck with a 3.6 V6 57kmi. For $ 20k.
I'm in the market but super iffy on these. I want something that's gonna last more than 200K miles and not be in the shop all the time. With all the higher compressions, higher fuel pressure, smaller engine parts etc it feels like durability and reliability are going to be an issue. Please tell me I'm wrong?
Some love it, some hate it. Im in the hate it camp. Im in the market again. Wanted another Ram. Went to Denton and test drove a Laramie, a longhorn and a Rebel. (2) SST and (1) HO. The HO was impressive performance wise. Fuel economy was disappointing considering my current 5.7 has a 21mpg lifetime average. The Hurricanes are EV lile quiet. I couldnt get a feel for the fuel trim/boost ratio. Mpg never exceeded 14 mpg on all 3 test drives. These new Rams i ruled out completely solely due to the straight 6. Sucks. Ill look else where
@robertsoria9293 i own a 23 loaded laramie in delmonico with the Hemi. Love it. But just absorbed 15k in a collision. Im thinking i may want to move on from it once i get iit back. Well see how the diminished value claim turns out. I got 50% equity in it already
@richvangorder3900 ahh I see rough, hope all is well, I had a similar scenario on a 2015 Ram walked away thankfully, salvaged the truck bought a Honda Accord and hate it lol. 2019 got a Ram limited. Love it and the side curtain air bags and seat airbags in the 15 saved my life 🙏. I only say a 24 since it has the newer dash cluster tech but any 5th gen used with low mileage is worth the buy and you'll save money. I bought my 19 limited with only 26k on it and under warranty for 48 when new was like 65-70 at the time
@ 11:44 Direct injection sprays directly into the combustion chamber ...Port injection sprays into the intake only .... would be messy if they sprayed fuel into a exhaust valve I bet that 3.0 is lighter than a V8
The lack of oil dipstick……..just another learning curve for the future….donI agree with removing…NO…. Will I survive?….Yes….maybe if will make me more conscious about checking oil level. I have the HO Hurricane on my JGW and definitely has well above adequate power and performance. I would dare say better use of HP and performance than my former GM 6.2L V8 and about the same fuel economy.
MY 20 YR OLD LS V8 HAS 6 BOLT MAIN CAPS,, GM HAD IT SINCE 1999' , THEN-01' IN THE HEAVY DUTY PICKUPS . Bring back the straight 4.0 that runs forever with zero turbos and the slant 6! Modernize them and they will sell a ton! Also provide at least a 5.7 & 6.4 Hemi options with modernization! This new technology is complete crap that won’t even run to 100K without major issues! The technician 🧑🔧 is a company employee he’s Not Gonna Dog his companies product ! Also how do you safely add oil with a fake dipstick without overfilling? What a pain in the Azz! No thanks 🙂↔️ 🙅♂️! At least GM & Ford still offer V8 options and guess who will be getting my future business 😊? Long Live the V8! Trump 2025-2028!
I’m a flathead man, no overhead valves for me it’s not proven nor will I never trust it! 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣 on my 2nd turbo engine truck and have loved both, quiet, loads of torque and if you ain’t spooling the turbos constantly very good fuel economy. Sure 5.0 and 6.2 are great engines while 5.3 and 5.7 are boat anchors, still good engines but painfully anemic.
Very well broken down and explained. But I wonder with a standard 1/2 ton pickup if it would just make more sense to electrify the propulsion system altogether and be done with the air box based power systems. Sure kilowatts is something new to learn about but that is much easier than keeping up with the ever changing complexities of a combustion based propulsion vehicle. So far for me, the switch over from a baby duramax to the Silverado RST this year has been pretty straight forward. I wonder if Stellantis will follow through with the release of the RAM REV, I see it good for the market as a competitor. I do not see the new Hurricane engine as a technical leap forward, it seems to be more of a place holder.
Lmao remember everyone in the truck world making fun of Ford for a twin turbo v6. Fast forward almost 15 years and every truck manufacturer has one. As usual they followed the fellas at Ford.
Driving my third Ram with a V-8, 360 CI, and 2-5.7 Hemi's. I will never by another Ram LD if my only choice is 3.0 inline Twin Turbo. I am not alone, that is why you have 1500's up the ass!! Have a good day!
Inline 6 not a V. You should go check under the hood of most semi trucks built in the last 35 or so years. I think you'll be surprised how many cylinders they have.
Your wrong on why V8s are not being improved. The EPA is stepping in and telling them that these manufacturers are being required to come up with more fuel economical and environmentally friendly trucks. These manufacturers could easily get more power out of these V8s and make them more fuel economical but not by much. V8 will always be the better engine in a truck or a diesel. Now, one thing he did not mention which I doubt he would admit to, these hurricane engines do have a single part that is already failing and causing catastrophic failure which requires full engine replacement. So again, ram just needs to improve the 5.7 hemi by getting rid of the MDS and fixing the manifold issues by finding another vendor who can make a better manifold out of stronger materials. Then the hemi would live on for another 20yrs easily.
More moving parts just another thing to break. Warranty the entire engine with turbos for 120k and I’d consider otherwise forget it. I’ll keep my 5.7 until it dies and walk away from Ram for a competitor with a non turbo engine
I have ZERO confidence in twin turbos. Have already owned and sold three of them. All Japanese namn plates. Reverted back to a Lexus GX460 (V8 powered), AND moved forward to a Tesla Model S. WOW WOW!
Inline 6 engines where the engine of choice for half ton trucks, the V8 was a new phenominion that came about in the 80's and 90's. Inline 6 engines are better truck engines then V8's are. V8' are more of a muscle car motor.
It needs a few decades for stellantis to fix all the issues, its potentially better, but until stellantis starts doing some actual QC these things will continue to be JUNK.
It seems to me they could’ve saved a lot of money and ended up with a better engine if they just did all those upgrades (except of course the dipstick delete to the existing 5.7 V8.Especially since the gas mileage never seams to be mentioned. Therefore it’s nothing to brag about.Fail number 1.
All this is well and good, but the biggest problem with the hurricane is some idiot engineer, for whatever reason decided to convince the higher-ups that having no access to check the oil other than a AI gauge on the dash that tells you what the oil level is what is wrong with the dipstick what is wrong with it? There's no logical reasoning behind it other than Still Anis trying to make it so you buy the truck if you ever need anything done to it just bring it to us. We'll take care of. It makes no sense.
It’s not. 6.7 powerstroke is a beast and you can still delete them. 7.3 ford gas is good to 6.6 Chevy gas is good and l5p is good. Tons of great choices out. It’s mainly the 1500s or f150s that have stupid gimmicks. 2025 Superduty has strongest axles and suspension ever in a Superduty and best frame coating bodies don’t rust powertrain is powerful and reliable for hundreds of thousands of miles of work.
Where did my comment go. Must be the same place as the 3.0 Hurricane will go soon. Now you see it now you don't. You are degrading your channel with this salesman. I wouldn't let this guy change my oil. I cancelled his channel when TH-cam recommended him promoting the Hurricane. Turbos are not reliable on gas engines. Listen guys. Stick with a V8.
Great video! Hey, buddy don’t know why I get you and your wife’s political content on my feed as I’m not subscribed. No disrespect but, I’m Canadian from Alberta, and I’m not in the business of discussing or interacting with US politics. Really enjoyed your truck content tho keep it up!
it will put you in the poor house when those turbos go out replacing two cylinders with turbo whose idea was that that idiot who is running the company now it’s like who wants to buy a pick up truck with a crew cab what are you gonna do haul everybody to work and leave the shovels and what you need to haul. Will you pick them up since there’s no room?
Complexity is the enemy of reliability.

Traded my 2018 Hemi Tradesman for a 3.0 Big Horn. I do not regret it.
That is what they all say when they 1st get a new model, but after time that can change. I have a feeling you will regret it later on down the line:P

Everything on the new motors is plastic and the hurricane takes it to a new level of stupidity
It's because of the amount of plastic and heat turbos are producing, Plus I believe the block is iron and the head is aluminum and most of the time those turbos are going to be working.
@@hellkitty1014I’ve been in the auto repair industry for 25 years and I’ll take a 3V 5.4 over the Ecoboom.
It's an expensive truck. For that money they could have replaced a lot of those junk plastic parts with metal parts and made their customers much happier. I wish they offered a non-turbo version of this engine.
They do. It's called the 3.6l pentastar.
In my opionion no dipdtick no sale .modern sensors have a lot of trouble.
You don’t need a dipstick you can check oil life inside the truck
@JoshuaOverman seeing life of engine oil dont tell you the level of the engine oil.
I hope this comes to the minivans so moms are never late for anything.
This would be insane in the Pacifica the 3.6 is more than plenty. I'm guessing there would be zero way it would ever fit in a front wheel drive engine bay anyway
😅moms drive fast enough!😂
I rented the 3.0 and drove it 6 months. First thing happened was the lipstick shut me down, parts not available until 2 months later so I got a 3019 5.7 to drive. When fixed. I drove it 3 months and the plastic thermostat stuck when towing a tool trailer and ruined engine. It had power, but was a gas hog. Ended up buying a 2019 work truck with a 3.6 V6 57kmi. For $ 20k.
Stallantis is struggling financially because they are not selling enough vehicles in the states. Im curious if the prices will go down
My 2012 3500, HD with a 5.7 will pull 36,000lbs fully loaded. In a dobge. At only 345 hp
I'm in the market but super iffy on these. I want something that's gonna last more than 200K miles and not be in the shop all the time. With all the higher compressions, higher fuel pressure, smaller engine parts etc it feels like durability and reliability are going to be an issue. Please tell me I'm wrong?
The Ford 5.0 is alive and well and has had hot wire transfer cylinders since 2018 - what’s taken Stellantis so long??
I'm good with a 6 cyclinder engine, both my RAMs have 6 cycliners engines. One has an inline 6 and the other has a V6 and they both burn oil.
Nice painters tape. Nice touch.
Sucks. Ill look else where
Buy a 24 with hemi
I bought my 19 limited with only 26k on it and under warranty for 48 when new was like 65-70 at the time
My gen 1 hemi has 434xxx miles on it right now still runs like new
@ 11:44 Direct injection sprays directly into the combustion chamber ...Port injection sprays into the intake only .... would be messy if they sprayed fuel into a exhaust valve
I bet that 3.0 is lighter than a V8
So carbon buildup on the valves
About the time he is on his 5th major repair he needs to be interviewed again. How was his earlier interview over new cummins?.
Are they burning more oil?
Great video
I’m debating whether I should buy new ram mammoth 400 with 5.7L engine, but I’m not sure if it’s a good reliable engine.
Dude, great video BUT, KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE ROAD!
MY 20 YR OLD LS V8 HAS 6 BOLT MAIN CAPS,, GM HAD IT SINCE 1999' , THEN-01' IN THE HEAVY DUTY PICKUPS . WHY NOT BUILD A POWERFUL STOUT RELIABLE V8, 💪🏼 I WILL NOT, BUY A V6 OR THIS LITTLE 3.0 INLINE 6,, IT WILL NOT LAST.. I'VE BEEN A TRUCK MECHANIC SINCE 1990, likes the channel, i enjoy your videos, and the information, I appreciate that very much.
Air density is before the intake.
To late after the carburettor.
Yet still won't outlast the 5.6L Endurance V8 in my Nissan Titan
What would the ranges for 1/2 ton EV’s…
@brynwhite5470 i am pulling 475
@@kelviskelvis7140 with a trailer?
@brynwhite5470 same range loss as the duramax i sold about 1/3rd.
a truck you need torque V8 all the WAY!!! Try to give it a tough name like hurricane.Give me a break😂
Good job
What are they going to replace the 6.4 with?
7.2 gas v8 hybrid
3.0 Inline 6 High Output Twin Turbo Hurricane.
As of November 2025, Carguru shows 10,044 used 2025 RAM 1500 trucks Hurricane on sale between $36k to $45k. Sad 😢Bring the Hemi back please 🙏🏽
Unstressed naturally aspirated engines, with less complicated materials and components = longevity and less costly service.
This engine isn’t stressed. It’s better than the 5.7
Agreed 100%😊
@JoshuaOverman Yeah right mate
Lmao remember everyone in the truck world making fun of Ford for a twin turbo v6. Fast forward almost 15 years and every truck manufacturer has one. As usual they followed the fellas at Ford.
And that is the exact reason you see so many more Ram and GM trucks than you use to. People stick with the V8 options until they are forced not to.
yet it still can't outlast the 5.6L Endurance V8 in the Nissan Titan nor the 5.7L I-Force V8 in the 07-21 Toyota Tundra.
Stellantis with the no pano roof. 10k over a big horn and only get leather
The biggest issue with the Hurricane motor is that in comes inside of a RAM.
Driving my third Ram with a V-8, 360 CI, and 2-5.7 Hemi's. I will never by another Ram LD if my only choice is 3.0 inline Twin Turbo. I am not alone, that is why you have 1500's up the ass!! Have a good day!
I'm pretty sure to have a V6 in a full size truck you have to check off the effeminate box. But a 4 cam all aluminum hemi would be nice.
1/2 ton trucks are not full size trucks… the work they do can be done with a v6 turbo. Get a 3/4 ton up if you need a truck for doing “work”
Inline 6 not a V.
CP4 filter, its a time bomb.
WOW WOW!
Dry ice is carbon dioxide?....
Took 10+ yrs for BMW engineers to get their TT I6 right….Any guess for Stellantis anyone?
No v8 no sale period end of story
That's a fact. Ford and Chevy still make V8 trucks, so obviously my next truck will be a Ford or Chevy.
Inline 6 engines where the engine of choice for half ton trucks, the V8 was a new phenominion that came about in the 80's and 90's. Inline 6 engines are better truck engines then V8's are. V8' are more of a muscle car motor.
This guy needs to keep his eyes on the road 👀
Check back in five years .
So no tech is going to mention that this engine isnt port injection also and will ultimately destroy this engine.
They want you to lease. They don’t want you to purchase the vehicle and pay it off it won’t be worth the upkeep.
I know ford did it. But its not what most of the mopar community wants. His explanation of turbos and cold weather, i dont see TRX having any issues 😅
More cost and crappy towing mileage. If it was better offer it with the hemi and let consumer choose
All these turbo engines and no exhaust brake? I dont get it. Would def entice people more.
2 DRAWBACKS 1 MADE BY SHITLANTIS 2 MADE IN MEXICO
It needs a turbo V8
Most early picjk ups had a inline 6, and got the work done. So let time tell the truth .
That is total weight of every thing.
I don't want to be dependent on a dealership for everything. No thanks
Today's engines automatically adjust for elevation and temperature.
Looks like my days of buying new trucks is over.
True. As long as I can get those big old drivetrains. No 4 cyliner turbo engines for me.
Lol no dipstick...are these companies saying were dumb or are they trying to force us not to be able to work on our own vehicles????
Where did my comment go. Must be the same place as the 3.0 Hurricane will go soon. Now you see it now you don't. You are degrading your channel with this salesman. I wouldn't let this guy change my oil. I cancelled his channel when TH-cam recommended him promoting the Hurricane. Turbos are not reliable on gas engines. Listen guys. Stick with a V8.
I wanted my V8. They can keep their garbage supercharge V6.
Stop crying
Ram can’t give these trucks away, nobody wants this engine. Zero chance I’m buying this…
it will put you in the poor house when those turbos go out replacing two cylinders with turbo whose idea was that that idiot who is running the company now it’s like who wants to buy a pick up truck with a crew cab what are you gonna do haul everybody to work and leave the shovels and what you need to haul. Will you pick them up since there’s no room?
Look ma, it's a turd
😅😂😅😂 get a V8 fools
