He got 6/7 in the Ashes becoming a living legend, he's the peoples champion, he's a great role model due to his personality, hard work ethic, talent and indigenous heritage, and he's 33 so he doesn't have a tonne of time. He's proved himself on the big stage, so I say use him for a few years while he's bowling is incredible, then when he retires one of the other guys can get a shot.
I think there's a few reasons why Boland has suddenly come onto the scene so late and so successfully, 1 is definitely him knowing his game inside and out due to his experience in playing Shield cricket for a decade before selection. 2 and I think most importantly is the invention and widespread use of the wobble-seam delivery in the last few years in test cricket of which Boland uses to great effect. It adds even more doubt as to which way the ball is going to move off the pitch as the seam is moving (wobbling) as the ball comes down and forces batters to play at a lot more deliveries that normally they'd be confident leaving, causing more balls to take the edge. 3 I think the reason he came onto the scene so late is a bit down to Aussie cricket culture, typically the 135kph bowlers who hit a length and try and extract seam movement are a very "English" type of seam bowler, whereas Australia have nearly always trusted more the express pace bowlers, probably because traditionally it suits their conditions better and maybe because they have a proud history of having quick & intimidating attacks. It's "very Australian to bowl fast", we've seen other similar type bowlers to Boland also have to wait a long time or their chances (Bird, Neser, Sayers etc.) and none given long runs/failing to take their chance and moved out for a returning big quick.... I think Boland is a great prospect, and there's definitely room in Aussie side for a bowler like him (hell McGrath took nearly 600poles and he wasnt quick) and I expect him to do well in England in 2023. can't see him keeping that bonkers average up as I feel that is definitely small sample size/helped by playing some average opposition but I hope he gets a decent crack in the next few years. Nice video! :)
Very astute observations. He's in the other illustrious group of pace bowlers before him like Jimmy Anderson, McGrath, Hadlee, Botham, Kapil Dev, Alderman, Hilfenhaus and even DK Lillee in the latter half of his career.
It will be great to see him in English conditions with the Duke ball. He's the type that does well in England. Should be a great ashes series starting in June.
I have to say, like Boland, your videos - in particular your research and presentation style are a breath of fresh air that absolutely stand out from the rest. A genuine joy to kick back and watch. Keep it up mate 👍
I think you also missed the fact that the changes to the Kookaburra ball in the last couple of years with a more pronounced raised seam has made seam bowlers like Boland far more dangerous than they previously were. If you look at Cummins, Hazlewood and Starc, all three of these players can swing the ball both ways, so it's not wonder they were able to beat out the competition when playing with the less lively Kookaburra ball of old.
the ball change hasnt made any difference. boland had a couple of blitzing stints and came onto the scene when he was a fully matured bowler. some days just go really well.
@@timn4481 I only said Warne as this was about the Australian bowler ! Take it one step more .. imagine a team where you had Muri and Warne bowling from opposite ends !!! With a ball that did more ....
Bolands MCG spell made me cry. It’s near impossible to break into the Australian team as the standards here are insane. But they also show loyalty to the boys at the top. It takes a lot to see them rotated out. He’s bought himself the 1st call up slot for sure. Even though I’m a Jye Richardson fan Boland was a a nice replacement for Hazlewood. Jye for Patty. Neser or Morris for Starc. Gives good depth and keeps these lads performing for their spot.
Boland and Ollie Robinson are the break-out bowlers of the past 18 months, and are very similar in style...medium pace but very accurate, wobble the ball both ways and prey on suspect defenses, very few batsmen in the current era have the techniques to withstand such probing & nagging accuracy
@JaggmeeetSingh you too....I do disagree to be fair, as Robinson just proved with Jimmy in Pakistan with conventional and reverse swing combined with unrelenting accuracy. he was unfit in the Ashes a couple of years ago and down on his stock pace, which is mid 130's and even unfit took 11 wkts at 25 which is hardly a struggle....I Personally and this no doubt will polarize opinion, but Englands attack based around Robinson, Anderson, Wood, Archer and co will blow Australia away next summer, and that is to take nothing away from Australia's bowlers who are top class
scott boland is not medium pace. he can bowl 140 at times and is at the very least 135. obviously hindsight is everything considering ive typed this just after the WTC but you would have seen boland bowling 140. fastest ive seen from him is 142
As an Indian, I want Australia to win the next Ashes in England, and Boland will have lot of work to do there. The main reason he gets wickets is his attitude.
Lovely Video Man! Keep it up. As a fast bowler myself, please put more analysis videos on the world's greatest fast bowlers such as Glenn McGrath, James Anderson, Dale Steyn, Pat Cummins, Mtchell Starc, etc...

Australia is just so strong with their fast bowlers. You look at injury prone Jhye Richardson, who'd be opening bowler in any other team in the world. An absolute star. He fits in the top 5 with Boland and the usual top 3 (Cummins, Starc and Haselwood). But now you have Morris and Neser leapfrogging over the top due to his injuries.

Out of curiosity, what's the name of the upbeat instrumental song used in the first part of this video? Cheers
I think he is more of a bustling bowler like Ryan Harris and to some extent Jason Gillespie. That bustle to the crease like a Ryan Harris or Steyn compliments this Australian attack, especially with opposition feeling the pressure from Cummins and extra pace of Starc. So opposition most likely have to try score runs off Boland, hence his tight lines adds problems
The other major part is his release. Scott Bowls with a bent front leg, but also collapses slightly leftwards in his motion, meaning that whilst he comes in right next to the stumps, the ball is released a lot lower and wider out from where it looks like it should, leading to the ball angling in flat at the stumps. The other thing that's come to light since this video was released is his apparent mastery of the infamous wobble ball, which is where you bowl with the seam diagonal, leading to very unpredictable movement in the air and off the pitch.
His effectiveness changed when possibly was Peter Siddle spent time after his International duties were done with Scott having time sharing a few techniques he'd learned in his international career passing them on, from another recounting this on video.
He's very accurate... bowlers who are extremely accurate are the most dangerous for me... even the smallest batsman error can result in the batsmans downfall... Glenn McGrath comes to mind or Malcolm Marshall
His style of bowling reminds me of Terry Alderman. One of the things that he has / must focus on is hitting the top of the off stump. Time and time again. If he can do that, and get his radar tuned in within his first over at each venue, England and Wales will be a great hunting ground for him! By focusing on the top of off stump, this will force those who face him to play at each delivery, even though the striker's style of play may be to leave as many balls as possible. By forcing the striker to play, this will bring the wicketkeeper / slips / gully / point into play. A short leg may also be a good investment, due to being a seam bowler. On the other side of the coin, if the striker is of the opinion that the ball is moving away, and it is left... good chance of the off stump being disturbed. So, that is where the focus has to be - especially in England. Another good trick, which it amazes me very few bowlers use... deliver the ball from the palm of the hand, rather than from the fingertips. By doing this, you are delivering the ball at a slower speed, and the striker is through their stroke before the ball arrives.
