Both saying Elon was an engineer and laughing about him commenting on economics when in actuality he got his college degree in economics not engineering.
Watching this video is excruciating. Watching homeboy play Minecraft, which I care nothing about, is bad enough, but the sound fx are too loud to hear the conversation sometimes. And on top of that he’s paying more attention to the video game than the conversation. It’s kinda rude. Secondly, this guy hasn’t even read the books, so what’s even the point of talking with him?
I hate the way a lot of these debate people's voices (like this guy) sound. It's like their job pushes them into this scared, speedy faux-objective style. It's like they've been institutionalized into sniveling insecure habits. The contrast with Preston's relaxed, confident open style couldn't be more jarring.
I have heard that the original Departed was actually 3 Chinese films or something and that they are good. Been meaning to watch them for over 10 years and still have not gotten around to it.
If House of the Dragon was an anthology series about the Blackfyre rebellions, it would’ve been cool. Although that would interfere with the Dunk and Egg stories.
40mins, about “wokness”; I’m torn. I wish there were more strong female characters and more diversity. I also wish that they weren’t shoehorned in. Rae is flawless, so there is no growth. Loki is a side character in his own show. The Scarlet Witch kidnapped, mind wiped and inslaved a whole town, then was made to look the victim. Feminism and diversity are not stand-ins for good storytelling. That being said The Critical Drinker is articulate and funny and makes great arguments. His friends however are not very well spoken so it comes off very anti-woke.
My only problem with this statement is that anything we're not already accustomed to is shoehorned in. We could make the same statements about random white protagonists in countless films, but in those statements we just call it bad storytelling. We don't talk about "this white protagonist was really shoehorned into the show", because its been defaulted for decades into popular culture. You can say the story or characterization is bad w/o talking about it being shoehorned because everything that we're not accustomed to is shoehorned.
Yeah, I’m tired of white dudes being “shoehorned” into everything. No one likes bad writing in theory; so why do people only cry that they don’t like bad writing in their shitty, normie, shows or movies when diversity is involved. For real if people are gonna bitch about bad writing, then bitch about all the bad writing not just the shit that pertains to diversity. For real, people bitch that there being forced diversity in their terrible Marvel stuff and terrible Stars Wars stuff and the only thing that gets loudly bitched about is the diversity. Here’s a news flash; Hollywood has sucked for a long time and it’s not because of diversity, it’s because they can write garbage and people will gobble it up anyway and that’s been a problem before all this “forced” diversity. If you don’t like diversity because it results in bad rewriting, then I got a challenge for you; critically judge all the whites in media the same way you’d judge everyone else, if your self aware I assure you it will be eye opening on the state of writing in popular media. It’s all fucking lazy.
Preston giving the example of characters defending themselves from antagonists (with WEAPONS!!) as any semblance of conservative intrusion in popular media is hilarious.
I don't think Destiny is on the mark re the "being too scared of showing a woman as weak" thing being a recent invention. Star Trek Voyager has this problem in spades and is from the 1990s. IMHO it's just poor writing, and isn't really anything to do with the current time or Wokeness. There's always been bad writing, we just don't remember the badly written things so well.
I assume Preston has never been to places like ND and the like where there is practically barely any violent crime. It was a culture shock like someone going to Europe, but never leaving the US. And yes I walk the streets at night in ND without a fear of being mugged.
I've been to North Dakota. You do need people to have crime (I joke). But violent crime is a factor of a bunch of things - population density, wealth disparity, availability of weapons. ND doesn't have the disparity or density to have much crime. Europe, though, has really high population density and rather low crime, which is amazing.
@@chriscueva1866 to be fair, he's pretty abrasive and him rubbing some people the wrong way on a personal level is understandable. But yeah, Destiny has burned a fuckton of bridges over the years, and most people who know about him are more likely to have heard uncharitable sound bites rather than actually watched hours and hours of his content
Preston made a few really objectionable points: 1) People like the quartering are still talking about Brie Larson so they are raising a sexist audience. Umm what? 2) nobody knows what causes inflation. Really? An economist should know that inflation is caused by increasing the money supply, without a corresponding increase in the value it represents. That's really basic.
I just went to the Quartering's page - it's the same old anti-SJW grifter shit. The guy hasn't changed one bit. As for inflation, you did not pay attention to what I said. The theory of inflation is basic and the world has not behaved that way for 40 years. The 80's, 90's, 00's all had massive, massive spending and increase in money supply with almost no inflation. It has been an ongoing puzzle for economists.
@@PrestonJacobstheSweetrobin My main objection on the first was calling the anti-SJW shtick sexist, and now you called it a grift as if it is definitely disingenuous... I am not subscribed to his channel because I get tired of his content which is pretty repetitive but I don't think he is a hack or sexist or whatever. TBH that's not engaging honestly with the criticism of wokeness and you are being woke yourself. GRRM isn't woke, and he isn't anti-anti-woke, he is just a feminist. On the second point I still disagree but point taken, maybe I misunderstood you. To me unprecedented massive spending (trillions in bailouts + (600+1400)$ to everyone)+ massive decrease in production and supply = massive inflation.
@@fantasyarch But there wasn't unprecedented massive spending. Spending in 2020 was 44% of GDP, which was very similar to the 43% spent in 2009 and 43% in 2010, which did not result in inflation.
@@PrestonJacobstheSweetrobin I may be wrong but I think the spending then was from taxes or borrowing, they didn't actually "print" (more correctly, create digitally) new money to spend. It's not the spending that causes inflation, it's the increase in the money supply and something like 40% of all $ in circulation were "printed" in the last 10 years or something like that.
@@fantasyarch No, printing money has little to do with it. It's the issuing of T-bills, which is the main mechanism for increasing the money supply for the government. Since all of the spending is deficit spending, more T-bills are issued to finance that debt. Whether it be 2020 or 2009, the situation is the same. This isn't some fringe thing I'm talking about. It's really quite famous and mainstream. The mystery of no inflation (until now) had been puzzling economists for a generation, with some calling it the "extinct volcano" before its return. You'll hear all sorts of theories like "demand-pull" and "cost-push" and psychological influence. What is certain, is that the political talking point of "we spent too much" is far too simplistic.
What? He said the ones who would respond well to a "home invasion done by a black person"-story are conservatives. It's a very conservative fantasy, and when Disney does that, they're being very conservative, but nobody complains about "disney are conservatives" as a response. Lmao At least try to be intellectually honest if you're gonna hurl random dumb accusations
A propos the media and reporting on the ground. I didn't hear anyone mention this, but Germany has a pretty awesome system for public media that yields amazing content and they have they own reporters too. I don’t think along the same line as Preston where you have to have the exact same philosophy as a writer to like their content. I am not a feminist, and I am not an atheist, But I greatly enjoy a song of ice and fire. Most of my friends liked it along the same lines of destiny’s friends “you never know what’s going to happen who dies and who will do what.” But I find that statement to be the opposite we get a lot of setup before the red wedding as an example. But the reason I got into the show and later books, was the lore and history, I love that, then it came to the characters which sold it to me. My point is you don’t have to agree with some portions of a writers philosophy to enjoy it, sometimes they have themes or universal truths that everyone can connect with. But I can understand why Preston thinks that way because the lord of the rings I feel is amazing because of the story, the lore the characters, and Tolkiens philosophy which I agree with, however I greatly feel that the message Tolkien is telling is universal. As there are elements that I find universal in martins work.
Destiny came to the same conclusion I did a few years ago. It got to the point that if even I could see it, it must be fairly flagrant. One would have to be mental not to, I think.

At some point in this stream, you guys are talking about a book that helped you both with writing? Could somebody name the name of that book? I cannot find it now...
Preston I really wanted to ask this: If D&D included all the abortions from the books into the show, how many would have taken place over seasons 1-4 (the book seasons)??? I'm show only and was surprised to hear abortion was a book thing at all, it should've been in the show
So, in the books, there is "moon tea" or "tansy tea." The idea is only introduced in the 3rd book, A Storm of Swords, but is talked about all the time after that and used by several characters. There are three big plot points involving the tea 1) Lysa's forced abortion and the fall out, 2) Robb Stark's wife Jeyne Westerling being forced to take the tea, and 3) Margaery being arrested for requesting abortion medication and its fall out. There are a couple of additional situations that fans speculate may be an issue. Dany may have accidentally eaten some berries that inadvertently gave her an abortion. Additional Asha (Yara) plans on using moon tea, but is captured before she can.
@@PrestonJacobstheSweetrobin Yes, in aSoS it's mostly mentioned in the Catelyn chapters, but subtly since she thinks Hoster is talking about a girl named Tansy (and it's also mentioned in Jon 2, Arya 4 and Sansa 7), and then in aFfC, Cersei 9 and 10 are all about the moon tea (and Arianne, Pycelle and Asha also mention it). Mayhaps George felt more confident to make it a big part of his books the more he wrote. It would be interesting to see if he will make it an even bigger part of the story now that Roe v Wade has been overturned.

vaush said "i'm better than the ppl in my chat" when i watched him - what an obnoxious person
Wow, Preston is way more jovial in casual conversation than in his critical vids. I like it. He should do more.
Not enough "spicy politics"! The only thing they "clashed" on was "The Departed", lol.
Wait, isn't Destiny a woman's name?
As a fan of both of you guys getting to watch you talk to each other feels so surreal to me
I hate the way a lot of these debate people's voices (like this guy) sound. It's like their job pushes them into this scared, speedy faux-objective style. It's like they've been institutionalized into sniveling insecure habits. The contrast with Preston's relaxed, confident open style couldn't be more jarring.
Have only seen Destiny fighting with someone, good to see he is a pretty chill dude.
Is he chill if in almost every conversation he acts like a spoilt child
@@ackidack Destiny's child?

The New Show with Jon Snow killed me 😅
I have heard that the original Departed was actually 3 Chinese films or something and that they are good. Been meaning to watch them for over 10 years and still have not gotten around to it.
You only need to watch the first one, sequels are crap. But the first one is exceptional, criminally overlooked. The title is "Infernal Affairs"
A crossover I didn't know I wanted, that I didn't know I would enjoy, and yet one that I immediately clicked on and will binge through right now
Idk who this person is but love you Preston
"yeah yeah but I yeah yeah but uhm yeah uhm but I yeah uh and yeah I uhm" .....way to sound like a Fed!
If House of the Dragon was an anthology series about the Blackfyre rebellions, it would’ve been cool. Although that would interfere with the Dunk and Egg stories.
Apparently mark hamill and Harrison Ford checked George Lucas constantly to make the movie watchable
Will not be surprised when Preston shows up on Rogan 6 months from now.
I agree.
@@RaykouKun I just wrote a comment from the same mindset as you. Totally agreed
Rae is very much not flawless
Does Carmine know that you're in an open relationship with him?!
LOL
Ha
When I saw the title I thought I was having a stroke
will you be doing westworld watch for Season 4?
such a light talk. there's plenty you disagree on. would be interesting to see more, rittenhouse, etc.
I'm probably wrong about half of this, but DGGL
Preston giving the example of characters defending themselves from antagonists (with WEAPONS!!) as any semblance of conservative intrusion in popular media is hilarious.
I don't think Destiny is on the mark re the "being too scared of showing a woman as weak" thing being a recent invention. Star Trek Voyager has this problem in spades and is from the 1990s.
IMHO it's just poor writing, and isn't really anything to do with the current time or Wokeness. There's always been bad writing, we just don't remember the badly written things so well.
The State Department; it all makes sense ! The political theorizing & the alliance analysis.
@@PrestonJacobstheSweetrobin good point
I love these comments, it is eternally entertaining to me how many people get so incredibly mad when they see Destiny
Right? He’s a pretty moderate guy. The only reason I think people freak out is cause of second hand accounts misrepresenting what he says and twitter.
@@chriscueva1866 to be fair, he's pretty abrasive and him rubbing some people the wrong way on a personal level is understandable. But yeah, Destiny has burned a fuckton of bridges over the years, and most people who know about him are more likely to have heard uncharitable sound bites rather than actually watched hours and hours of his content
worrying about moving Overtone window moving further and further to "progress while promoting it
Preston made a few really objectionable points: 1) People like the quartering are still talking about Brie Larson so they are raising a sexist audience.
1:29:30 Preston is adorable 🥰
I love how preston thinks that defending yourself against an intruder is a conservative concept
maybe left leaning people use knifes... wait they are prohibiting it in UK with stricter gun laws - so maybe spoons?
What? He said the ones who would respond well to a "home invasion done by a black person"-story are conservatives. It's a very conservative fantasy, and when Disney does that, they're being very conservative, but nobody complains about "disney are conservatives" as a response. Lmao
At least try to be intellectually honest if you're gonna hurl random dumb accusations
Preston you are the GOAT. I can't stand Destiny but I can bare him for you !

And speaking of Tywin, are you planning to cover him, Preston ?
The Geology of Minecraft, haha. Some great discussion, especially the writing tips.
A propos the media and reporting on the ground. I didn't hear anyone mention this, but Germany has a pretty awesome system for public media that yields amazing content and they have they own reporters too. It's a pretty convoluted model with public funding and a lot of reviews, control and occasional controversy with people being fired for not being neutral. I'd love to hear your take on Germany's model, Preston. ARD, ZDF, DW.
It's extremely bloated with a lot of funding for bullshit. I'd prefere the bbc system.

What a unexpected crossover.
This is the most unexpected, based conversation, in some time.
Was this stream before or after the Winter Garden blog post by George?
Destiny came to the same conclusion I did a few years ago. It got to the point that if even I could see it, it must be fairly flagrant. One would have to be mental not to, I think.
lol does Destiny normally play video games when he's talking to a guest? Found myself watching him harvesting the crops or whatever he was doing more than paying attention to the conversation.

Destiny almost always does at least two things at once, yee.

Preston I really wanted to ask this: If D&D included all the abortions from the books into the show, how many would have taken place over seasons 1-4 (the book seasons)???
I'm show only and was surprised to hear abortion was a book thing at all, it should've been in the show
gosh I forget how many times moon tea is mentioned in the books. A lot. I mostly remember Margery and her cousins but it pops up a lot.
@@SaccharineCHNOS It's mentioned 14 times. (EDIT: Moon tea is mentioned 14 times, but "tansy" (the ingredient) is also mentioned a bunch of times)
