Felipe Mazon Hi, glad to hear it! :0) If you play guitar, I would highly recommend any or all of Joe Diorio's books and DVD's for learning, and of course his CD's for listening to. I've bought copies of all of his books and 2 DVD's, and they're so packed with unique concepts and ideas for playing music on the guitar. Honestly some of the very best in teaching aids/tutorials. Some are available from Amazon: www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1/183-7664600-8250535?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=joe%20diorio&sprefix=joe+dio%2Cstripbooks And his 2 DVD's are exceptional (imho)- www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dpopular&field-keywords=joe+diorio+DVD&rh=n%3A5174%2Ck%3Ajoe+diorio+DVD
Felipe Mazon The William Leavitt books were some of the 1st that I used back in the mid to late '70's. I still take them out now and again, especially vol.3. The first books I got from Joe Diorio were Intervallic Designs and Fusion... but honestly they are all good imho. Good luck and happy pickin' Felipe! :0)
Frank Fog I'm really glad you agree! And took the time to say so. \m/~L~\m/ The music business never has been fair. When extremely talented people go all but unnoticed, except by other musicians, and the likes of Bieber become household names, you know there is something terribly wrong with the system!
Is this Pat and Joe in 1988 at GIT, if it was, I was there..What a great day. I didn't talk the rest of the day...Everything that need to be said was said by those guys.
I Never forget this moment of these two hearts blessing an audience of musicstudents with great emotions! Michael Cox roomie are you out there? Ive been looking for you!
I was there too, and the pevey amps on P-100 stage confirm it. Still very impressive. The comment among students then, was that they didn't rehearse at all for this presentation, having maybe 15 min backstage to choose what to play. All the more impressive if one belives it. Oh golly, bless they're hearts!
It's because people today has very low attention span for melody, rhythm and harmony. They just look for something obvious like fast and loud stuff. I can listen to a good jazz player play for days, that's what I do here on youtube, I'm pretty sure there are still folks who enjoy quality music.
This is awesome. They both bring so much music to the table. I really think Pat played so well, his development of his passages really standout to me. And Joe's use of triplets is so impressive. These guys are really good.
Some of the other comments in regards to a disdain of jazz, shows how these two are in contrast to the commentators, they are articulate, and expressive.I dont see there Real Books in front of them as they play. They both are playing from their hearts.
As frases não soam individuais,ou seja "pensar por acorde" os caras sabem fundir as escalas ,criando uma conexão entre as frases sem as famosas pausas pra pensar
+mohitoness That is a great example of the difference between the 2 players... Metheny gets inside the tune & makes it his own - he is a strong musical current. Diorio surfs on top, albeit brilliantly at times. Comparing players is pretty much " apples vs oranges" however!
I was there 1983/1984. The performance halls still had the Peaveys. Pat didn't come by that year, but he sat in one night at a veggie restaurant in Venice where Charlie Haden was playing. I actually shook his hand after the gig, introduced myself, said I was a student at GIT, and people were still talking about him coming by a few years earlier. I'm just a nobody student, but Pat was very cool, very gracious. He couldn't work a visit into his schedule that year. He was in town to do a demo for the new Synclavier at USC. My one brush with greatness, lol! I thought GIT kinda phased out those Peaveys in the later 80s, but could be wrong. Anyways...just gorgeous playing by two true masters!! Thanks for posting this precious recording!!!
Im not sure if youre a musician or not, but it is very common for professional jazz musicians to perform without rehearsing. We are armed with a Real book, a book with thousands of pieces of sheet music, and you just pick a song, take a request, or are told what to play, and you play it on the spot.
What's uncommon is that I liked, a lot!!! I'm not a jazz fan, not for lack of trials, but, some how, it never feels absolutely right. With all due respect to jazz as an essential learning style and cradle for most contemporary western music, allow me a joke. Do you know any jazz fan that can willingly watch an entire jazz performance without a massive alcohol consumption? I'm afraid that as a humble pot head, my jazz appreciation capabilities are limited to Joe Pass, Eletric Band and few others
gomerpyle0086 There's no bass player here! This is a guitar duo, not an "Electric band trio" as you cal it. I know this tune from it's opening melody stated with much feeling by Joe Diorio. Last but not least this is a Latin tune, not a bebop tune.
+Glenn Michael Thompson If it's a lecture you need : It's not Latin, its Brazilian...big difference. Latin is Cuba, Mexico via Spain. South American is mostly Spanish - Argentina, Venezuela etc., but influenced by Brazil, so Latin doesn't really cover the whole South American music unless you don't know much about the various countries. In which case Latin means anything that happens south of US border. US Jazzers used to call anything that "didn't swing" Latin - some 'old school straight-ahead' still do. Personally, I think Brazilian music swings hard - like early Pat Martino "Along Came Betty" for a classic US jazz example.. As far as "electric band trio"... maybe english is a second language for the quotee...
L. Harrison Thanks for the geography lesson. I've always been weak on the subject. We just got about 8 inches of snow where I live, will spring ever arrive here? (up North) BTW I hate categorizing music. I suppose if you're learning specific beats it can help.... but if I go to buy a cd in a local store, whether it's jazz, Cuban, Brazilian etc. there will NOT be separate categories... It'll all be under Jazz , or World music. C'est la vie.
Not Geography, but the SOUNDS of all the different ethnic influences - west & east european classical & folk with Spain, Italy, Portugal folk...& the African influence pervaded all of it. Now when you go to a generic Latin or World Music section, at least you can begin to make sense of where all the diversity came from, & new places it went, & can go to. Hopefully you can find a local store run by crazed musicians who have tons of genres! Online, try Amoeba records in Berkeley, CA, or SPIN records in Carlsbad, San Diego North coast, Ca.
My mistake! I thought I was sharing ideas with fellow musicians.... There's so many threats in relation to specific body parts I feel like I must have hit a porn site by mistake! Phew! It really IS a music video. Dump the hate, Dudes.
Once again I'm at a loss for the dislike. Is it Pat? Is it Joe? Or is it that those complaining just can't do? One can either play changes or they can't. Those that do hold no ill will to those that can't. Those that can don't much think about those that can't and thus don't really care what those that can't think about those who can. Jazz is something you like or don't. Those that like it, cool. Those that don't, only Wynton cares if you come on board, good luck and God bless.
Because PM is on this thousands ++of views. But the best player by far is JD who is relatively unknown. Just goes to show how important having good hair is in the music world.
The worst part of bebop for me is that bassists seem to enjoy it way more than they should be allowed. It's a kind of self coolness assessment or something. Now seriously, do you know the name of the song that starts at 39 minutes on this very cool Electric Band Trio video? Nice video btw.
The worst part of most fusion and "smooth" jazz is that it is boring... however some cats who are known for their smooth sound, like George Benson, are only in it for the money...Benson is an excellent strategy ahead and bop player when he puts his mind to it...
xD hahaha. Brosef, i love jazz, and just like you i find MOST of it boring. Jazz is just like any other genre some inovators, and endless waves of shit. How much blad rap and metal exists? I have a feeling youd like some genres like Bossa nova, smooth jazz, and fusion. Id be willing to guess its stuff like swing and bebop you find boring, i do too! Jazz isnt a genre, its expressing what emotions and colors you feel, and you can apply it to anything. /watch?v=luweCbGXT4E
Joe's book "Intervallic Designs" changed my playing forever.
I got the book just yesterday
Joe Diorio freaks me out! Such a great player. He deserves much more recognition than he gets. One of the true greats of our time.... of anytime!

"He deserves much more recognition than he gets. One of the true greats of our time.... of anytime!" & that's the TRUTH, brother ;-)

When extremely talented people go all but unnoticed, except by other musicians, and the likes of Bieber become household names, you know there is something terribly wrong with the system!
Isn't it interesting how Pat and Joe have similar styles? I think it's a tie here. They are true jazz legends.
Is this Pat and Joe in 1988 at GIT, if it was, I was there..What a great day. I didn't talk the rest of the day...Everything that need to be said was said by those guys.
Joe gave me two of his earlier albums as a gift. He said nobody asked about those albums and he was happy to give them.away.
wishing the great JOE DIORIO HAPPY 84 YEARS OLD TODAY!!!!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOE !!!!!!
Joe Diorio's guitar tone is unbelievable
Pat Metheny, what a national treasure. Beautiful playing.
Tom Jobim, Pat Metheny and Joe Diorio. 3:33
Metheny is undeniably one of the greatest improvisers there's ever been.
Just so sweet and wonderful. Two great jazz guitarist and one soulful song. I love Joe's jazz guitar tone.
That is a great video of two masters! Thank you for publishing!
I was there...M.I. 1989...
+mario bettega niiiice xD
I was one of the guys filming
LUCKY You!!! I've never had an opportunity to see & hear Joe Diorio perform.
Was this filmed at the jazz seminar in Montpellier? I was a student there and I remember Pat and Joe playing together.
No, in LA at GIT
This is what Pat does...introduce us to special people with special talents that we would otherwise never hear about. Joe is an incredible talent!
PAUL ZAPUA: THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO - IT IS A GREAT CONCERT BETWEEN 2 CONTEMPORARY VOICES. If only the peanut Gallery showed some respect for it.
Joe Diorio- unsung hero! Monster! Love his playing with Jaco, Ira Sullivan etc. Thanks for posting!
Just great! Such players these two are! Giants!
Pat made that intro so well.
These two are GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I mean GREAT!!!!!!!!!!! and Diorio is a GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rest in peace maestro
i was there, too. it was definitely one of the highlights of my year. wish I knew back then what I know tho ....
Hi Peter. I think I was there too!! This was 1993-4 right?
Metheny is king
Two maestros!
Three. Tom Jobim, Pat Metheny and Joe Diorio. 3:33
Beautiful cover!
Metheny's fingers slide around so often and with such subtlety.
I Never forget this moment of these two hearts blessing an audience of musicstudents with great emotions! Michael Cox roomie are you out there? Ive been looking for you!
Tomas, I remember you well, I wasn't your roomie but I think we were in the same homeroom with Dan Gilbert (GX1).
Just beautiful.
I was there too, and the pevey amps on P-100 stage confirm it. Still very impressive. The comment among students then, was that they didn't rehearse at all for this presentation, having maybe 15 min backstage to choose what to play. All the more impressive if one belives it. ❤❤
only Pat can play on low strings like that ...just velvet sound
So true. He has a certain articulation that’s just awesome.
The main difference between both is that Pat doesn't need to show how virtuose he is. He always think in beautiful phrases. Always.
It's because people today has very low attention span for melody, rhythm and harmony. They just look for something obvious like fast and loud stuff. I can listen to a good jazz player play for days, that's what I do here on youtube, I'm pretty sure there are still folks who enjoy quality music.
I think (hope) there are a few of us who feel that way !
8 min mark so beautiful by pat mmmmmm yum

I was a student at MI in LA too - but it' was in 1996 - Joe was a teacher at MI

This is awesome. They both bring so much music to the table. I really think Pat played so well, his development of his passages really standout to me. And Joe's use of triplets is so impressive. These guys are really good.
I gotta say, this is even better than the live version with Mr Metheny alone
Maravilhoso!
Thx for posting.
Awesome!!!!!

This was shot at GIT in Hollywood in the 80s
Rest in peace Joe Diorio 😢

This, is awesome.
pat's pedal A from 1:43 to 2:44 very nice :)
+ricardo moyano he kinda stole diorio's solo with that actually
+mohitoness That is a great example of the difference between the 2 players... Metheny gets inside the tune & makes it his own - he is a strong musical current. Diorio surfs on top, albeit brilliantly at times. Comparing players is pretty much " apples vs oranges" however!
This was1980-I attended G.I.T 1979 to 1980- And I was in the audience -just incredible!!
+Carlyle Barriteau
I think it was 1989, i was there and i was filming on one of the cameras...
So lucky... I wish I had been there.
It was definitely NOT 1980!! It was either 1989 or when I was there in 1993

Is that a gk pickup on pat's 175?
What Gibson 175 model is Joe DIorio playing? It looks red sunburst...
Peavey Artist VT 1-12 amps? Oh, dearie me... I guess it was the style at the time... I even owned one, but Joe really deserved better amps.

Nice job on this cIassic Jobim offering, but I prefer guitarist Pat Martino's version.....

Joe over plays on everything. Couldn't stand him when I heard him at university.
How insensitive ..........
